Easy to miss spot as it is nestled in Whitechapel Gallery; but what a treat when you do discover it. My wife and I went for the tasting menu, which consists of four courses. Seasonal ingredients were used and flavours were light and refreshing. Service was excellent and our host was most delightful.

A fantastic meal at Townsend Restaurant. First time we’ve been and it certainly won’t be the last. Great modern British cooking, well sourced ingredients, fantastic flavours complimented by friendly, spot on service. Loved it.

We wanted to like this place more, but were quite underwhelmed by the mains (do avoid the cooked pollock as it tastes absolutely bland with the celeriac paste.). We enjoyed the friendly service, the raw pollock (with blood orange and dill), and the beignets (a simple combination of fried flour balls with custard and rhubarb).

Completely unplanned dinner out, but what a superb restaurant to have it in, with incredibly friendly service.
Only part of the restaurant was open, but only 3 tables were in use. We'd previously had one of their at-home dinners, which we'd enjoyed.
The menu is short but varied, with plates of various sizes to pick from.
We shared a small, a medium, and had a large each, which was plenty. The dessert wasn't needed but was delicious.
The wines we had all went great with the food.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will keep this hidden gem in mind for the future.

This place is a gem! The menu at the moment is full of seafood which was amazing. I didn't expect the modern British foods are good as this much. Because the menu changes every month, it's worth visit every month!

Inside the Whitechapel Gallery, Townsend offers seasonal and creative modern British dishes in a quiet atmosphere. We had quite high expectations from the reviews/photos, but tastes weren’t as creative/interesting as they sound like(tastes good but no woww). For the price you pay(our bill came to about 30£ pp including drinks but without alcoholic drinks) they are still very worth it. I would recommend their main dishes over starters/desserts.

Had an amazing experience at Townsend last night; ate the most exceptional food and with service to match. This understated restaurant packs a punch with its well crafted and refined menus. The divers wine list accompanies the best of local UK and European ingredients London has to offer. The pollock with winter veg was light and refreshing yet still deep in heart warming flavours, exactly what you need on a cold winter's night. All credit goes to the kitchen team and Anna at the front of house. We will be back to see what the next season holds.

A chic and elegant vibe. Situated inside of Whitechapel gallery, the perfect place to enjoy a quiet brunch. The energy of the gallery somehow shields the noise and bustle of the busy high street. Presentation is a focus and there are healthy and less healthy options available.

Last night, a companion took me to Townsend as a last minute affair. We weren't sure what to expect, but were greeted by friendly wait staff. The restaurant itself is quite small, leading to quite an inviting and intimate atmosphere.
We chose to dine from the set menu with the drinks pairings and were blown away by the variety of fresh flavours across the courses, as well as the well selected drinks (even including a cider!).
I will certainly be returning to try more of the menu.

This place was a real gem, great food and a cozy, relaxed but nice atmosphere. Would have rated as a 5 but docking one star as they forgot to add something to my tab and kept hounding me for payment for a few days after I left which was a bit off-putting. Our check was still over £300 so a bit of slack would have been nice - particularly since it was their screw up.
That aside, great place and will go again!
