Reviews of Pine

Exceptional tasting menu with a huge range of flavours and textures. The amount of planning and effort that has gone into each dish can be seen. The chefs and serving staff also explain each of the elements in each dish. There were 17 'courses' in total. Quite a few are just a mouthful but at the end of the meal we were all full.
The wine flight was quite challenging. The focus is on organic, natural wines which are quite different to the modern style of wine, being less fruit driven and earthier. Next time I would play safer and choose I wine I know I would enjoy.
Service was friendly, engaging and respectful

A delightfully peaceful and rural setting, this intimate restaurant can be found in Northumberland just a short drive outside of Newcastle.
It was our wedding anniversary and I take reviewing restaurants (and any business) very seriously indeed!
Being a 1 Michelin star restaurant this review has to take into consideration, not the quality of food but the overall dining experience and ambience. - This is especially true when you consider the final bill of almost £300 for 2 people.
So why only 4 stars you might wonder 🤔. Well, let’s cut to the chase and give a summary of the highs and lows of the day!
The food was delightful. Overall it was an array of delicious tastes, textures and treats for the taste buds. There were certainly more dishes that stood out for the right reasons than those that didn’t. We instantaneously loved both mushroom dishes…. in fact I’d go as far to say I’ve never tasted mushrooms as good as that!
Actually for us, we both believe the vegan aspect of all the dishes was unbelievably more attractive, appealing and delicious than the meat aspects…. and that’s saying a lot coming from 2 meat eating carnivores.
Quite surprisingly, my personal favourite dish was the pickled beetroot with cheddar and walnuts. It was literally one of the nicest combo of foods I have ever experienced.
Okay, so now onto the few negatives and main reasons for dropping a point. I’ll keep this brief, as although they didn’t spoil the overall occasion, this was probably because we didn’t allow them to and instead chose to embrace the experience.
Firstly, when you pay what most normal folk would consider vast sums of money for a culinary dining extravaganza you certainly expect an environment that’s fitting for the occasion. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side and we were faced with beaming rays of sunshine and beads of sweat. - Yes, we were in the sunny side of the restaurant with literally no way of shielding ourselves from the damaging UV rays of light! - So, in summary, a restaurant that probably takes circa £4-5k per sitting with around 23 diners paying in the realms of £150-£250 per person simply can’t afford to put up a few blinds for the poor folk unfortunate enough to sit at the weather-end of the room. - This was our main reason for dropping a point because we think it’s simply unforgivable. However, it must be stated that we still tried to NOT let it dampen our spirits… albeit whilst my wife fanned herself with the menu in an attempt to dry the beads of sweat from her brow.
90% of the food was spectacular but it shouldn’t go without mentioning that the main pork dish was a tad underwhelming. The pork was a bit overdone, dry and chewy.
Most of our desserts were phenomenal, but typically the last 3 probably should have been the first (as they weren’t as sweet), and this wasn’t helped when my wife found a hair in one of them 🤦♂️. Also, simultaneously neither of us enjoyed that one particular taster (meadowsweet canolee) and likened it to the smell our cat emits from her rear end 🤔.
So hey ho there we are… just like the day was long, so is my review! The dishes actually took around 3 and a half hours to finish, so by the end I was seriously worried that I might need a wheelchair to get out… I started losing blood flow to my legs, not only because I’m tall but because of the sunburn to my legs!
On the whole the staff were great, but we were slightly puzzled by the waiter’s lack of empathy when told of the hair discovered by my wife 🤷♂️.
We paid and went on our merry way. Our taste buds had been treated, my bank balance depleted somewhat and I was left wondering would I return!? Yes, probably once a year if I could be assured I would experience different dishes!

This restaurant is virtually on our doorstep and how fortunate we are to have it so close. On a summer evening the views from the restaurant are exceptional, across the rolling countryside. Service is spot on and the food is absolutely wonderful, sourced locally from the restaurant's own gardens and local artisan producers. It is a truly memorable, culinary experience for all the right reasons and now even gets a mention in 'Table Talk' in The Sunday Times (23.1.22), where Marina O'Loughlin headlines her review: "It's only January but is this my restaurant of the year?" Nothing else to add!

A 20 minute drive out to the West of Newcastle along the old military road takes you to Vallum farm. There is a collection of units that were part of the farm. In the upstairs of the old cow shed is the most delightful restaurant. A lovely greeting from the staff and you're shown to your table. Immaculately kept with glorious views over the Northumberland countryside (the deer running over the nearby field, an added bonus!)
There was no pressure to order & fresh cold water given to sip on while you took everything in.
We had some allergy queries which were answered immediately to everyone's satisfaction.
When the afternoon tea arrived we were blown away by the stunning visual delight & quantity that was now before us. A great choice of teas & coffee were brought out & included in the price - no fear of going thirsty!
Every mouthful of food was a delight, special mentions to the sandwiches, madeline & mille-feuille. There wasn't one item that wasn't tried & some had to be taken home in the boxes provided.
The menu changes regularly & I have no doubts that each one will outdo the last.
The staff were only too glad to chat about how they got were they are & about their home grown/local produce.
An absolute delight that we hope to repeat when we can.

*Perfect* from start to finish. Relaxed ambience; unobtrusive, attentive & efficient staff; locally grown/sourced ingredients; inventive, expertly executed menu. Well deserved Michelin star status.

Best meal I've ever eaten. What an experience! Superb service, enthusiastic sommelier, very accommodating (swapped shellfish courses for the veggie options, which were fantastic) and such inventive and exciting food. Whole experience was a joy and being nearly in the kitchen was fascinating. Being served each course by the chefs was the icing on the delicious cake. Very highly recommended. Thanks too for the extra touches to make a very special anniversary meal.

Fabulously good, we had the Saturday lunch taster menu. Open kitchen, you can see everything being put together.
Staff are friendly, efficient & know a lot about what you are eating & drinking. Sommelier friendly & welcoming, owner & head chef talking through the ingredients.
It's modern & inventive - there are matched wines & matched non alcoholic drinks, which were great.
Expensive, but if you can afford it, it's a fantastic experience & astonishingly tasty & well presented food. Unique.

Best afternoon tea I’ve had anywhere. Young team. Ambitious food. Excellent value for money. I would not hesitate to recommend Pine to anyone.

This is hands down one of the best eating experiences of my life! Me and my girlfriend ate at Pine to experience only our second tasting menu, and this one frankly blew our expectations out of the water. Every course has clearly been meticulously considered to get the most out of some wonderfully grown seasonal selections of vegetables and fruit. The delicacy involved in constructing subtle yet interestingly impactful flavour profiles is outstanding, and something that shouldn't be overlooked.
Some of my personal favourites were the 'Heritage Tomato, Fennel Yoghurt with Rhubarb Root', 'Langoustine, Smoked Pork Bone Broth, Black Garlic & Magnolia', 'Butter Poached Monkfish, Shellfish Sauce & Smoked Herring Garum', and the outstanding 'Sea Buckthorn Tart'... And not to mention the very generous supply of Sourdough bread with a variety of butters!
On top of all the food amazements, the attentiveness/detail to service was probably the best I have experienced. Every single person who worked there was exceptionally kind, thoughtful, and very easy to speak to.
Special shout of to the sommelier, who you have to take the advice of, as she provides some unbelievable wines and a wonderful personality to go with!
Absolutely OUTSTANDING!!!

Incredible food cooked by chefs who seem to enjoy what they do. Pine is a true Michelin star experience in unpretentious surroundings and one I would recommend to everyone.

We recently enjoyed dinner in this restaurant. The food is exceptional and the enthusiasm of all working there is infectious. They thoroughly deserve their success and recognition. Don't miss the non-alcoholic pairing drinks, some of which I would buy by the crate if they were available separately.
A special thank you to the Sommelier who put up with my pomposity with good humour and grace.
We look forward to returning if we can ever get a booking again.

My husband and I received a gift voucher for Pine as a Christmas gift and we booked for afternoon tea today. We are in agreement, which doesn’t happen often, that we have just had one of the very best dining experiences we have ever had. From start to finish, the food, service and ambience were sublime. We will definitely be back as we are eager to try the tasting menu. We can’t recommend Restaurant Pine highly enough….thank you.

Fab service, amazing food

From the smile from the sommelier to welcome us in, to the owner waving goodbye to us from the window as we drove away, one of the best meals out ever.
Every taste, texture and temperature of each dish has been considered.
Exceptional.

The Restaurant Pine taster menu is an absolute triumph. The dishes not only taste amazing they are each like mini works of art. 18 faultless courses presented by the chef's themselves, it's food theatre at its very best...

I visited for an afternoon tea with a large party. The service was fantastic and the food was amazing. Such a range of foods and flavours all presented beautifully. Will definitely be back soon for dinner.
Highly recommended.
