- the concept feels confused.
- dishes aren’t cheap and portions are quite small for sharing so it’s not proper tapas. A full 5 or 7 courses also would cost more per person than a Michelin tasting menu.
- like Wags, the food comes out when it’s ready including some parts of the same dish coming out at separate times.
- the options are well executed, flavoursome and unique. Albeit nothing is memorable enough to make me crave coming back for it. The menu changes constantly so it probably wouldn’t still be there in any case.
- the place is cosy and clean but the table fills up quite fast and you don’t tend to get new cutlery between courses.
- spent a fair whack but was hungry again a few hours later. The black rye bread was really tasty.
- good to try just not for me.

First time visiting and not disappointed. Service was 5 stars and the food was beyond Michelin standard. Just incredible and would highly, highly, highly recommend. Rachel was top drawer and a credit to your business 👏

This was our second visit to Route. The food is beautiful understated cooking with the highest quality ingredients.
The black treacle bread it an absolute must try.
The smoked eel was new and full of flavour.
We had celeriac ice cream for dessert which was another highlight.
I’m sorry to say that the service really lets Route down. On both occasions we have visited the service has been slow, with very little attention to detail or care. It is a real shame because the food is fantastic.
It won’t stop us from returning for more smoked eel though.

Delicious 😋😋😋 food and amazing combinations of unique taste . Definitely worth visiting this hidden gem of Newcastle. Great staff and services too ! Next will a Michelle 🌟!

Lovely restaurant with a small plate style of serving. Lots of beautiful seafood cooked to perfection. They could cater for my husbands dairy allergy. The staff were super friendly and accomodating and the wines were dwlightful

The food was excellent and the staff were great too. The girl serving us was very helpful (she let us try a few wines before ordering a bottle) and the chef also came out for a quick chat. All the dishes we had were top notch. Highly recommended.

First time and definitely not the last! We weren't exactly sure what to expect but blown away by the experience.
Every dish was inventive, delicious and so well prepared. Our waitress was very helpful and the open-kitchen design of the Bistro creates a very friendly environment. Did I say we enjoyed it?? Great place - go!

Best restaurant in Newcastle. We have visited almost a dozen times and the menu has been different every single time. Every single time it has been totally delicious, seasonal and well priced.
Lovely atmosphere. Good service. Great wines. Go!!

Cute restaurant with outrageously tasty food. Every dish we ordered was packed full of novel flavours that ended up working perfectly with each other.
The only off-note was the aioli with the chips that came with the beef. It doesn’t go with everything else.
Service is fine although more guidance on how the menus work (QR codes and sharing plates) would really help.
The two sets of knives and forks also baffled me. When do you use the 2nd set with tapas?

Best food I've eaten in ages, would highly recommend and am already looking forward to my next visit!
Most beautifully and skilfully prepared food in a really calm and relaxing environment which is a nice contrast!

Came to Route for a second time in October with friends.
The food was excellent, a particular favourite was the pork rillettes but also had delicious oysters and sweetbread.
The overall experience was not as good as the first time round for two reasons:
1. The restaurant was operating an order-by-mobile-phone system, which really diminished the dining experience. It meant we started our meal with everyone getting their phones out and staring at them for ten minutes and also makes things difficult for those of us who like to go out without bringing a phone.
2. I think the lighting had changed since the time I had been there last and was very bright, despite the fact it was an evening meal. Gave it sort of an afternoon canteen vibe and not the cosy atmosphere it had previously.
I'm posting this in the hope that it might change, and if it does would get five stars next time I visit!

An amazing taster and wine pairing meal. Highly recommend. Without doubt one of the best restaurants
if not the best Newcastle has to offer.

Just eventually crossed the door of 'Route' newcastle. Wow!! What an amazing restaurant, my wife and i have had the pleasure of visiting some of the UK's top restaurants, including from 1 - 3 michelin star venues.
Can i please just say my wife and I were totally blown away with the flavours of food we both have never tasted before.
My wife and i can honestly say this restaurant next door to our favourite nautical pub ' Crown Posada' is now our new favourite.
This venue should have a star, we already booked our second sitting next week (as we paid the bill). Big thanks to John the chef and an even bigger thanks to Rachel front of house.
Big thanks to the team, see you all next week, 😁😁😁👍👍👍😍😍😍😍😍

Sister restaurant of the Staith House on North Shields fish quay. Very much in the style of a European neighborhood restaurant...very relaxed and informal but fantastic quality food. Lovely decor and staff. Very different to the general Newcastle scene. Good for couples or groups, expensive but excellent value for money.

What a lovely restaurant and so worthy of a visit. I walked in on a Monday night and was seated in the window which wouldn't be to all tastes but for a table for 1 it was perfect for people watching. The trout, pickled veg, watermelon starter was perfect for the warm evening. The sea bass main was done well with heaps of flavour in the accompanying veg and octopus. Well matched wine which I sampled a few of and a dessert of poached nectarines with a raspberry ripple icecream sandwich to finish. I'll be back to sample the rest of the menus for sure

Popped in for Sunday lunch. It's a very cosy restaurant with a relaxed vibe and the staff are very attentive. The food is outstanding!! Nice sized portions too and the gravy was unreal 😍The Cookie & chocolate sauce afterwards was perfect. Can't wait to come back!

We’ve been to Route numerous times and it has never disappointed - last night was no exception! Delicious, unfussy small plates (larger dishes were also on the menu) and good service. Thanks to John and everyone that make this place special.

Great night celebrating my birthday. Coming from the US, haven’t had a meal quite like it! 100% recommend

We have eaten here twice, 12 months apart. On both occasions the food was amazing, beautiful flavours and inventive dishes. The chef's passion shines through. When you are in Newcastle there's no need to look any further.

Great restaurant. Great menu with good variety of dishes. Good wine choice too. Service was excellent and special call out to Rachel who looked after us. She was friendly, knowledgeable about the food and wine and led an efficient service. Recommend this restaurant

Brilliant starter and main's a real gem with food prepared and cooked with real care and skill. sweets just a little too sweet for us would just get the cheese board in future but don't let that put you off it is well worth a visit
S. R.
Food was delicious, service was perfect and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate with our dietary requirements
D. G.
Michelin star laid back atmosphere fantastic food highly recommend 5*

Great cooking. Worth a visit. Some dishes are a little on the expensive side.

This restaurant is trying hard to be the best place to eat on the Quayside. I guess competitors must write the occasional one star reviews, because it's amazing. ROUTE shoots the moon and back again to Australia, where incidentally the perfectionist chef heralds from.. superb!

Route is fantastic. Beautiful small plates, seasonal and delicious with an ever changing menu. It's fine dining with a casual and friendly atmosphere. Top wines and cocktails too. Great value for such sublime flavours and quality ingredients. Thanks to the lovely team for another smashing evening.

Route is the best restaurant in Newcastle. Incredible flavour and great atmosphere.

Very easy to use the online booking system.
Came with my partner and ordered 5 plates (it’s a sharing plate kind of place!) and left very full. Every dish was delicious and you could taste how fresh the ingredients were! Lovely wine and even lovelier staff! Definitely would recommend!!
S. R.
Food was delicious, some of the best we’ve had and good service too. Only suggestion to improve is the restaurant was cold, especially near entrance/glass front and could do with improved heating.
N. L.
Amazing food, great atmosphere and an always changing (but delicious) menu! The service is informal and friendly but always super professional. Without a doubt one of the best places in the city.

Awesome friendly staff, beautiful dishes and a really nice setting. Will definitely go back!
R. B.
Beautiful food and friendly service in a tastefully designed space.
However, despite nearly all of the staff wearing masks/face shields, there was one staff member not wearing any protection what so ever. I was irritated and upset when she brought our dessert, coming into close contact with my friend and I. Very irresponsible and the only reason for a less than perfect review.
M. W.
Excellent. As good as, or better, than house of tides. Loads of posters of Noble Rot… but it’s better than that! Favourite place in Newcastle. Great service too.

Happened upon this place on a Sunday afternoon, decided to go in and wasn't disappointed! The place itself is quite small but it has a great atmosphere and the service was attentive. There were several specials on the board including local crab as well as some really tasty mains. I had a roasted beet starter which was simply amazing and the Beef Sunday roast which was one of the best roast dinners I've ever had. Beef was incredible and the cauliflower cheese was divine. Will eat here again!
A. F.
Fantastic food every dish tasted amazing. The waiters were very helpful with great knowledge of the food and drinks. It had a good atmosphere. We liked it's quirky features. Great value for money.

Very special place with fantastic food. You will not find pasta, pizza or hamburger here. 100%recommended and also very friendly personnel.
H. B.
Spectacular food my partner is seriously hard to please where food is concerned. I can be so crude to say he was practically licking the dishes clean. Not a morsel left on either of our plates. Atmosphere, staff and cleanliness faultless. Highly recommended 😊
J. O.
We went early Saturday night, there were a few people in and a nice welcoming atmosphere. This is not the usual menu format and you order small plates of food which you share. Staff were friendly and helpful and because it was our first time the waiter explained the menu in detail. We ordered two snacks, cod roe and crispy lamb ball, both were delicious and a visual work of art. Next came chicken and black pudding terine, and Jerusalem artichokes with blue cheese, again beautifully presented and delicious. The biggest plate was the Morpeth Mallard and a potato cake. WOW we were blown away. The chiefs here are passionate and talented, the whole experience was a pleasure. There is a good selection of wines that complemented the food. Great format, great food and great team. Thank you.

Meal was lovely.
Asked for house wine, bottle was brought, got the bill and shocked to find that the bottle of 'house wine" cost £34.50, other wines were about £22. After lovely meal was feeling cheated by wine cost.. won't be going back !!!! Their loss

My best dining experience in Newcastle. From the moment we were greeted to the goodbyes, just a delight.
A pleasure to chat with the team, before we ate, and to understand their philosophy is vital. The local sourcing, intriguing taste combinations and exquisite presentation make this our first choice for city dining now, be it a couple of small plates or a family occasion.

Went there with my wife & daughter for Sunday lunch & it was terrific.
It’s not cheap for a Sunday dinner but the food was probably the best we have had. Very tasty & fresh.
