Reviews of Ashmolean Rooftop Restaurant
M. Y.
Lovely restaurant with a beautiful atmosphere and view and friendly professional staff. Coffee and hot chocolate were great. Quality of food was okay but portion is tiny. Overall a good experience but quite overpriced.
c. j.
Lovely rooftop setting. Extremely relaxing. You can choose to sit on the outdoor terrace (with umbrellas) or the very pleasant interior space.
Professional, speedy, efficient
J. “. K.
Lovely view and terrace for warmer days. I enjoyed my visit and the food.
M. S.
The staff were very nice and attentive, the location is superb and great for when the weather is nice. The afternoon tea was nice but I was expecting a bit more for the price. The cakes on top were all quite plain and tasted the same so it needed some variety. The sandwiches were okay but also a bit bland.
K.
Food was well presented and staff were friendly, the view was very industrial, and it was expensive for what it was. We also received our food before anyone took a drinks order and when our drinks did arrive the server took my tea cup away and left me with just the pot. No one checked on us to ensure everything was ok either. Definitely room for improvement but overall the experience was ok.
S. S.
Great bright and light surroundings, relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and fresh quality food. View is compelling compared to most restaurants locally.
J. R.
Fantastic. Large, modern and airy rooftop terrace. After a great exhibition come and relax here. Great wines and spirits for everybody. Extremely attentive staff even when busy. Feeling hungry? Check out their fab menu. Will be coming here a fair bit. 💕
M. C.
Food good enough, staff delightful and attentive, location spectacular, on the top floor of the Ashmolean Museum, looking out over the rooftops of Oxford.
Too early in the year for the open air roof terrace when I was there, but I will be back for that experience.
M. W.
It might be rooftop but there are no views to disk of. Staff very helpful but good incredibly slow despite being less than 50% full. Go for a drink but not a meal...
T. G.
A bit so so really. Nice atmosphere but waiting staff were rather forgetful.
Twice asked for a bottle of water, and twice ordered some bread to start, which eventually arrived after our meals so we sent it back.
My salad arrived about 8 minutes after the other two hot main courses.
The food was good: bouillabaisse had loads of fish but was a little thick. Good veg bourguignon and the crayfish salad starter. Also nice vegan choc pudd.
Shame about the service.
I. S.
Went there with a group of friends for Afternoon Tea and it was a great choice. Not very crowded, the staff is very polite and the food was great. Look out for the scones, they are amazing! The only drawback is that they close at 5, so go there early if you want to take it slow and not rush through the food.
S. C.
I had a wonderful afternoon tea for 1 at the rooftop restaurant. The rooftop views were gorgeous and the tea and goodies wonderfully filling. Service was really good.
It's really something else to just zip through a museum or wander through the museum to head to the rooftop for afternoon.
Can't wait for next time...I'll order the proseco.
R. D.
Nice and friendly staff, great space and I imagine must be ace in summer. Interesting menu too with nice range of food. Very busy!
C. Y.
It has very nice environment, atmosphere, the food is ok.. been to there several times, the food quality seems various..
W. D.
Nice rooftop with both covered and external dining areas, and a view, although not breathtaking. Somewhat dull atmosphere at least when we were there. However the food was excellent and at a fair price, especially the chicken. The Ashmolean museum underneath is great and worth a few hours visit.
C.
Enjoyable afternoon tea in a pleasant environment. Very busy but was seated and served quickly. Prices were fair and the taste was pleasing.
A.
-Friendly staff
-Nice atmosphere
-Vegan food and drink options
-Ok views
A. K.
I enjoy the food at the rooftop whenever I come. We had a wobbly table (uneven floor) which needed cleaning after we were sat down. I will return and recommend the food and ambience always 😂
S. D.
What an amazing place on the rooftop. We enjoyed unusual hot weather sitting out on the terrace where cool breeze was flowing. Didn't take any food but enjoyed some lovely cool drinks.
R. S.
Gorgeous setting and delicious food
M. T.
Very good food and service. Excellent position of table on sunny day.
E. C.
Tasty food with beautiful views
S. C.
It’s very lovely when there’s sunshine
M. D.
Nice relaxing place to have a meal after a day spent in the museum.
L. F.
Friendly environment and good food. The 2 course option for £17.50 is a very good deal, although the choices are limited. The service was excellent and considerate. Lovely views too and the ideal way to finish off a pleasant few hours wandering through the museum. I would definitely recommend.
S. X.
Enjoyed our afternoon tea & coffee here. The door was kept open which caused a bit of a chill every once in a while though.
J. M.
Today for Saturday lunch in the sunshine it's 5* Lovely food with great service.
J. G.
On a hit summers nught no better place to be. Food also ok
D. G.
A great terrace for enjoying al-fresco dining, but the lack of exterior heaters means that few are brave enough to use the space in winter months. The cakes at tea time leave a lot to be desired, but the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere that makes up for the lack in quality.
C. C.
Fabulous lunches - delicious food - on both my visits and I cannot understand the negative reviews I have read about service. Angelo (lost his card and this spelling may be wrong) who was waiting on both occasions was charming and helpful. Lovely setting. Great place to meet for a special lunch. Recommended!
The lifts are the most frustrating in the world though so leave plenty of time or visit with sprightly diners.
K. W.
Beautiful views. Went here for a friends birthday afternoon tea. The staff were attentive and the food was great. Be warned though as in the tourist season you'll need to book to guarantee a seat. I've tried to go spontaneously many times but it's always been too busy.
M. M.
Surprisingly good good, service, and wine selection. Much like the museum itself, you get far more than you'd expect in terms of quality. The best lunch I've had in Oxford, paired with fantastic service. Will definitely return
B. C.
Although an elegant setting and staff very pleasent, no vegetarian Sunday roast although menu state's ask our friendly staff. Fish and chips the fish was coated in grease, staff not that fussed that it was not eaten, as I say nice venue but the over priced bar like menu let's it down.
S. B.
Beautiful location on top of the museum. Spacious, modern, stylish.
Great staff, friendly and helpful.
Lovely food. Modern european and very well cooked.
Reasonable value if not cheap. Would definitely go again if in the area.
K. A.
We came for lunch and the food was good, but the outdoor seating had a serious wasp problem. As soon as the food was delivered, the table was swarmed with several aggressive wasps. One person did get bit and almost everyone else was fleeing inside--which then caused seating congestion.
T. B.
This is a good place to visit as part of your museum experience. Although the prices are inflated as one might expect, I try to view the excessive costing as claiming back the zero entrance fee as many European galleries and museums charge. What I did find difficult to swallow was not so much the £6.70 cost for just two cups of tea but the audacity of then adding an insulting 67p service charge! This is boarding on the ridiculous if they seriously consider a charge to deliver 2 cups of tea. Most people, especially the countless overseas visitors would probably pay this out of ignorance or embarrassment. The Law is on our side as pointed out in the tiniest of print that this charge is discretionary. They know most people won't realise this. Disgraceful behaviour from a restaurant that already over charged. Please review your policy to at least consider service only when something more substantial is ordered. Very disappointing.
A. W. M. M.
Really enjoyed a cream tea in the rooftop restaurant. 2 scones (one plain and one fruit) with clotted cream and jam. A pot of English Breakfast tea was a wonderful brew to have with the scones. Nice, unusual view of some of the colleges roof tops. A great way to rest your feet after strolling around Oxford.
J. A.
Such a lovely setting and nice atmosphere and not too formal. We had a lovely afternoon tea with prosecco for a birthdat celebration . However, we had booked for 4.15 but that morning received a phone call askibg us to come earlier as they had a late booking for a party. We were very cross to be inconvenienced as we do not live locally. It made us feel our booking was not inportant to them .
K. M.
A caring and on point team, thanks to the vigilant supervision of their manager: Michaela.
We had a taster of the coming menu, rather a truly positive step from their winter menu.
One could also enjoy the different freshly made cocktails.
The pud, I chose the cheese platter, small option. Glad I did, as the generous serving of three different vintage cheeses, was absolutely gorgeous!
My sincere thanks to Michaela.
L. M.
Good place for a cup of tea, a bite to eat or even afternoon tea. The rooftop aspect, whilst technically true, is not quite as good as it sounds (when compared to e.g. The Varsity Club) simply by the fact that very little can be seen from the roof terrace! Barriers and walls mean that all is really visible is the roof of The Randolph. Don't expect a view, but do expect a nice place to spend half an hour or so. It's not particularly cheap, nor is it especially remarkable in terms of service or quality, but it's in a lovely museum and as museum cafés go it's not half bad
R. L. E.
The quality of food is superb and they were able to accommodate a rather large group last minute. The service was impeccable and would recommend to anyone wanting a tasty fresh meal. Also worth noting there is Jazz on a Thursday
N. W.
Delightful meal finishing off a great day out in Oxford.
Clean modern surroundings with helpful staff, quality meal with good portion size.
Would definitely recommend to anyone with something to celebrate.
M. N.
Unexpectedly secluded location. Nice ambience. Delightful live music in the form of a trio, Amber & the Professors, very entertaining without being too intrusive. Nice, fresh food and charming service. We'll definitely be back.
E. F.
Nothing to write home about. The gnocchi dish was just a pile in the middle of a plate, no garnish or sides. The fish was well cooked, but the chips were a little under-done. It's not cheap, but the atmosphere is nice and cosy in the early evening.
J. C.
The location alone is enough to elicit a rave rating, but the restaurant shows no signs of complacency. We enjoyed a late lunch outside on the terrace on a cracking Bank Holiday Monday.
To be honest, we were not spoiled for choice on the menu, but my wife and I were able to find one item each to our taste. Mackerel with fennel and horseradish starter was delightful. Main courses were simple but elegantly presented. My roast chicken was satisfactory but the highlight of the dish were crushed new potatoes with capers (just as well, as I had inadvertently ordered an extra portion!). My wife's risotto was , unfortunately, bland, albeit rescued by the prompt provision of parmesan on request.
Service was exemplary: efficient, courteous and obliging.
I have a faint recollection that when I was last here ca. 10 years ago, there was a piano, which would today have been very fitting. It might be worth timing a visit to coincide with the live music that is still sometimes provided.
A very pleasant summer's afternoon. Thank you.

Came here for Afternoon Tea for my Mum's 60th - not only was the food lovely (delicious and very well-presented) but the service was amazing! We were given complimentary prosecco and the cake plate was decorated with a lovely "Happy Birthday". Even aside from that, the service was brilliant - staff were friendly and helpful and we never felt rushed. Thanks Ashmolean staff for a lovely day!
P. R.
One of the nicest spots in the city. Oxf.Uni students get free entrance to the museum, so make it a great museum day and close it with High Tea or cake and coffee in this amazing place. If the universe allows it might even be sunny (LOL) and you can enjoy a nice view of this part of the city.
S. S.
The food was lovely and waiters were very nice and polite. The hake was out of this world. I did ring up and praise the restaurant and spoke to the manager about how much we had enjoyed it .
A. B.
I went here for my 60th birthday lunch, very limited choice on the menu, I chose the lamb which was ok there was'nt anything else I would have chosen. When we booked the table we requested some sort of table decoration for a 60th birthday sadly this was'nt done. I would like to try the afternoon tea at some point but would'nt go for lunch again. As for the views of Oxford well we could see the Randolph Hotel and some fields in the distance. Having said all that I must say the service was good and Arcangelo the waiter was attentive.
P. P.
Lovely place for a drink overlooking the Oxford skyline but lacks that attention to detail. Lots of staff but not very attentive - feel like you are always chasing and trying to attract their attention.
Could be great if they wanted it to be!
Prices pretty good for the location as well.
V. K.
Overall an OK experience. Not some extremely good food and drinks but a nice place to visit for a snack after visiting the museum. Very nice view as well especially for the summer days in Oxford.
n.
I've been here a couple of times for lunch and cream tea. It is worth booking in advance. It's lovely sitting outside in the sun (when it decides to show up) and I have even watched Jaws at the rooftop cinema they sometimes put on in the summer.
J. L.
I only popped in here to buy a voucher for someones birthday for the afternoon tea that's served here.
Ut was naively warm sunny afternoon this February !!
Everyone was out on the rooftop terrace having coffee's or lunch. Looked lovely.
Reminding me to book here for myself .
C. S.
Very good food, the prices are expensive but for the most part it's worth it.
However, if i'm being as stingy with my stars as they are with their Chorizo, then 3 is all I can give it. £5 will buy you 6 WHOLE SLICES (6! Overwhelming I know!) of a fairly average quality Chorizo sausage, arranged artfully in the middle of a gigantic plate, so that you can't mistake just how much piss is being taken.
t. r.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the team on duty Saturday 3rd August lunch, my wife booked us in to celebrate my 70th birthday and although we arrived very early Magda the Manager went out of her way to give us a special experience which I will not forget for a long time, A pleasant personality and an asset to your team.
it was also quite a coincidence that it was also her birthday.
J. N.
Great views, especially from the terrace on a sunny day. You can wait a while for your food, but if you're not in a rush and it's good enough weather to sit on the terrace you'll want to stay for a while anyway.
L.
Food was delicious, enjoyable until the very last bite. The restaurant itself is comfortable with nice atmosphere, light, simple interior. Service friendly and fast.
J. C.
It was lovely weather when we went so sat outside. Views are OK but quite limited. They do a mean espresso martini but it's not on the menu!
c.
Very good value for money with the afternoon tea. Wide selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones. Good service and an exceptional location within the Ashmolean.
Z. S.
Nice atmosphere, friendly waitresses. Interesting albeit not very wide selection. Food is almost perfect but for the desserts.
J. A.
Nice place to sit and have a drink after going round the Museum. Not a huge selection of food and drinks but it's reasonable. Access to lifts to get to the top
D. A.
Surprisingly good food, drink, atmosphere and service.
T. J.
We were there lunchtime on 21st June 2012. Food was good. Ambience OK. Staff friendly - to a point (smiles which turned on and off like a switch). Price? Extortionate for what you got.
A. A.
Don't know why the bad reviews. The food is decent, the prices are ok (give the venue and the views) and the staff is uber-polite. Man up people.
J. H.
Lovely sunny spring day - perfect for enjoying delicious meal and wine al fresco. Interesting menu. Well worth a visit.
A. G.
Great location and view above the Oxford skyline ..very efficient service and good standard of cuisine when catering for numerous large groups this is impressively done
G. E.
Had their cream tea. Service was good, tea good, the scones a bit too dry, though. Very pleasant.
A. M.
Went here for a business meeting. Stunning views and great tea and coffee. Haven't tried the food but that's next!
j. k.
A superb place. The negative comments written by others paint a picture I fail to recognise. Excellent food, superb service and good value for money!
J. S.
Enjoyed the Thursday jazz night. Menu limited and there is a 10% gratuity. But worth going there. We will be returning in the spring.
J. R.
Afternoon tea is reasonably priced. Nice to sit out on a sunny day. The view wasnt as spectacular as i had hoped though.
K. O.
It was lovely. The staff were very attentive and the chef was more than capable of dealing with the different dietary requirements.
M. H.
Excellent food, professional and friendly service. Lovely atmosphere. Loved it every time we've been
N. H.
Lovely setting on the rooftop. Cakes a bit dry, and charged for an additional drink. Service a little lacklustre on the whole.
A. B.
Great food, great service, a wonderful place to visit.
Would recommend to anyone.
A. A.
Friendly staff and tasty food. Portions are a god size and there is something for everyone. Another view of the Oxford spires. Roof terrace.
A. S.
Great food at good price. Wonderful location.. shame there were too many wasps to eat outside.
G. G.
Nice meal, lovely to sit up so high. Staff were extra special, friendly and efficient, raised the standard from average.
H. S.
Had afternoon tea here on a summer day. A bit pricey but it's a nice venue and absolutely worthwhile if it's nice outside and you can sit on the roof.
N. S.
We were two and had a lot to eat with the 5 mezze selection. Very good price and good quality in a very nice setting. Impeccable service.
I. K.
Nice views, helpful staff. The food selection could be better. Overall a very good choice.
C. S.
Maybe I was naive but it was very expensive, there are many buildings in the way of the view of Oxford's dreaming spires and we had to wait ages for our tea, coffee and cake to come after they took or order.
N. V.
I went because my favorite jazz group was performing. They were great but the food was mediocre and expensive.
S. R.
Nice friendly discrete service . Very tasty Italian influenced dishes. Enjoyable experience
a. p.
Had the roast chicken and my friend had the pork chops both fantastic, great quality and also great portions
M. k.
Really nice rooftop bar, views of Oxford aren't great, but good views of the countryside. Food is fairly expensive but good quality.
C. M.
Good restaurant. Limited selection with premium prices but the food - and service - is good.
M. L.

A. M.

M. T.
Great views and very relaxing. Only had coffee and cake but the ambience is very nice.
C. S.
Lovely afternoon tea for 22 people, well organised and well worth £25..so please go and have look.
A. B.
Great location, standard fare. The location is great but the room is slightly too noisy for a relaxed dinner.
E. G.
See my review on Trip Advisor. It has lovely food and great views but can be patchy on service.
J.
Nice terrace, really friendly staff. Really good hot chocolate and good value afternoon tea.
A. I.

(Translated) When I visited Oxford, I found this nice rooftop restaurant and had a scone, tea and coffee. The waitress was nice and kind. The rooftop view and atmosphere was fashionable. It was several years ago, but it's still one of my best memories in Oxford which I still remember.
Visit the museum when visiting Oxford. The museum exhibits were more than I expected.
And I stopped by at the stylish rooftop restaurant on the top floor. The waitress was also kind and gave me a store card to take a picture.
Freshly baked scones and rooftop view. It was a good memory of a wonderful time in Oxford.
If you want to take a break in Oxford, this is the place to go. Especially recommended for women.

(Translated) We ordered risotto and chicken breast. Good quality food and tasty. What surprised me was in my chicken breast I found a large bone. When I asked the waiter if this was to be the case, he said he would ask the chef and disappeared. He was gone a good dozen or so minutes. We paid the bill and started to leave. Only then a waiter came up to me and assured me that the bone was to be in this chicken breast (???).

Zamówiliśmy risotto i pierś z kurczaka. Jedzenie dobrej jakosci i smaczne. Co mnie zaskoczyło w mojej piersi z kurczaka znalazłam duża kość. Kiedy zapytałam kelnera czy tak ma być, powiedział że zapyta się szefa kuchni i zniknął. Nie było go dobrych paręnaście minut. Opłaciliśmy rachunek i zaczelismy zmierzać do wyjścia. Wtedy dopiero podszedł do mnie kelner i zapewnił że kość miała być w tej piersi z kurczaka (???).
