Reviews of Wilding Oxford - Wine Dine Shop
A. A.
We'd gone for dinner. Excellent service, quality of ingredients and very knowledgeable staff. Local ingredients and the menu keeps changing. Pretty much every item on the menu has its own wine pairing, but you can always choose a different drink. Great cocktails too!

Booked a table for 8 for a birthday meal out. There was a really nice, relaxed, atmosphere as soon as you walked through the door.
We started the evening with a delicious cocktail. For food we chose the sharing platters as a starter followed by the butchers cut of the day which was very tasty and tender Toma hock steak to share, and a pizza.
Kent recommended the wines - they were just perfect.
We ended the evening with some desserts - orange posset, chocolate tort, and a few espresso martinis.
A very pleasant evening, good quality food & wine and great service, would definitely recommend!

My wife and I stopped here for lunch. We had a very friendly welcome and the service was excellent. There was a good varied menu with a lot sourced locally. Also they have nice wines on tap at sensible prices. There are a few tables outside at the front, plenty of space inside and a nice walled garden at the rear. We had shared nibbles for starters then guineafowl with vegetables. Beautifully cooked... moist and succulent with a zippy sauce! Total bill was £75 including coffees and tip. We'll definitely be back

Saturday night was amazing. Food was perfect, staff helpfull. Really enjoyed hospitality in Wilding. Strongly recommend
S. G.
Absolutely LOVED this experience. Gorgeous menu. Subtle, dreamy interior. Whimsy meets pin-striped suit-sort-of-thing. Though we walked in tired/not as groomed as we should have been we were utterly welcomed as-is.
Staff was totally prepared to treat each customer as they seemed to want to be treated- at once attentive, next calmly aloof, and once more again catering and affable offering suggestions that Really Worked.
Side note- I asked for a specific wine we haven't been able to find in over 30 years and one of the servers knew it. (They didn't have it, of course) but the staff was so well immersed in wine - even the obscure. But she didn't shout about it, very noble. :) Thanks !!!

Absolutely delicious food! I would recommend trying one of the homemade, woodfire pizzas!
There was a smart-casual atmosphere with some smooth jazz playing overhead!
The staff were very friendly too and kept checking to ensure everything was ok!
c. b.
Prices reasonable, lovely wine selection, service OK, venue's ambience is good, food less so. The foccacia on the menu is a flatbread and the alioli is garlic free mayonnaise. The frito misto was overcooked. The rocket was not washed. Recommended for drinks only.

Lovely place, lovely staff, and most importantly lovely wine. We went in for a quick glass of Cora at the end of the day so it was quite quiet. Ended up tasting the cocktails which were pretty delicious. Didn't eat anything but if I fancy a nice meal I'll be sure to keep this place in mind
N. K.
Such a gem of a place. We visited this place to meet our visiting friends and had a great evening! A very wide wine selection, good beer, very relaxed atmosphere, equally vibrant vibes, a good variety of food - some good veg options too! Lots of wine and great time had by all;) not to mention - dog friendly - so our little one was equally happy.
B.
Lovely place with a very relaxing atmosphere. An amazing range of wines and good selection of nibbles and main dishes. Is a shame they are not staffed enough. On my short stop I saw at least 4 people leaving because they were waiting at the desk and nobody come to greed them .
Really worth a stop for a nice glass of wine, a nibble and to read a book

I had lunch at the restaurant recently and was disappointed. My wife and I both ordered the fish of the day, plaice, and although it was pricey at £28 per plate, it only came with fennel and no other sides and nor were we asked if we wanted any sides. I ordered a glass of Austrian wine when we sat down, which was described to me as fruity and full flavoured. I found it rather bland and was not asked if I wanted another glass even though I finished it half way through the meal. The decor is very nice and the staff are pleasant, but my overall experience was not great and I thought the meal was overpriced.
S. H.
Largely underwhelming experience. The main dish we had was very tasty, but the service and all round hospitality was lacking. Ended up having to remind the staff several times about drinks and side dish that was ordered but not received. Received the side dish at the end of our meal and it was fridge-cold inside so it wasn’t particularly nice. The staff offered us dessert to make up for this which was a kind gesture, but still charged for the cold and late side dish and service charge. A real shame as I’m sure it’s not always like this, but probably wouldn’t go back for the cost versus the overall lack of quality in service and hospitality. Definitely has elements to potentially being a great place, but it needs to be consistent at this price.

We had a fantastic evening for my husbands 50th. We were put in the private dining room upstairs which was fabulous. The evening was made for us by our host Romain, who was charming and passionate about wine, he was so informative about the wines chosen for us to accompany our meal (which were delicious!). The food, wine and atmosphere were great at The Wilding, but Romain you made our evening, thank you!
N. S.
A charming place with a great menu, fabulous choices of wines, a lovely garden, and above all a great team. This evening Antonio looked after us, and he made us feel so welcome. We certainly will be back and cannot recommend Wilding highly enough.
S. H.
Fantastic food - we had the roast (huge!) and bouillabaisse, staff are lovely and really dog friendly - we sat in the garden and there was plenty of space for them to lie down as well as water for them. Would definitely come back - thank you!
P. S.
We went to Wilding on a recommendation and it did not disappoint! Quality food, quality wine and quality service….. Not sure you can ask for much more. Thanks to Nic and the team for making us feel so welcome! Highly recommended.
S. K.
Great for a glass of wine and well constructed small plate. Seabass carpaccio was fresh and balanced. Toasted focaccia would have been better as baked, but still good.
Wine suggestions proved excellent. Nice spot and nice atmosphere.
G. M.
Amazing food. Amazing wine, really lovely setting too. If I'm ever back in Oxford I already know where I'm having dinner!
M. V.
Great service, excellent food. We particularly liked the fish and chips - crispy on the outside but still juicy inside, and the fat fries on the side were really great too!
T. P.
Very nice service. We had the roast beef and fish of the day which were both very nice. I had the mushroom Wellington, which needed more seasoning. It also needed gravy as it was very dry especially with the big Yorkshire pudding! Obviously a great selection of wines.

Having been wow'd by a visit to Wilding in Salisbury 3 months ago (which we thought was really excellent) we thought we would pay a first visit to Wilding, Oxford this evening prior to an evening at the cinema. Turned out to be a pleasant early evening meal. The conservatory seating was, upon arrival, a tad cold so we asked to sit closer to the wood fire pizza oven. Team were helpful with the swap. The food was fine, wine too. We would visit again - and hopefully on the next visit we would not be quite so 'rushed' through the meal.

My wife and I really enjoyed our evening at this trendy new restaurant in Oxford. We were a bit reticent about going after reading a couple of recent bad reviews on Google. However, we were not disappointed. I had the best pan fried duck I have ever eaten and my wife was very pleased with her fillet steak. The food was beautifully presented, red wine was excellent and our Hungarian waiter was efficient, polite and friendly. Finally I thought the bill was reasonable for the quality of the food (much less than comparable restaurants in London, where I live).
n. e.
Food was nice nothing wow slightly over priced, wine was amazing, the shop is great lovely staff and good service
L. W.
I booked a table at Wilding for my daughter's 30th birthday and we all loved it. The food was absolutely perfect and the service efficient but friendly. The restaurant itself is a cool place to be and our table was in a perfect spot. Thank you for making the occasion memorable.
A. H.
Lovely place for a lunch with friends during a work break. Friendly service and good menu with more than standard offerings. Sad I couldn't try the matched wines but maybe save that for the weekend!
R. T.
really good lunchtime meal with generous fish board, lovely wine and prompt friendly service
E. D.
Great wines, on tap also.
Staff seemed very nice.
Place kept clean
Nice atmoshere in there
I didn't eat but food looked nice
H. F.
I’ve never felt more welcomed into an establishment before. The staff were so kind and gracious. They were extremely polite and attentive throughout my visit.
Although I don’t drink, I really do appreciate that they have a lot of knowledge about different wines and their selections seem huge!..
The food was incredible. I wasn’t intending to eat however the menu caught my eye very easily. The wilding burger was superb and cooked to my preference, to the T.
I will be returning, with friends, without fail. Thank you.
R. M.
Great vegan polenta dish, funky fizz and the smoothest of dessert wines. Will 100% be back !
E. B.
I had a fantastic Birthday meal in the garden at Wilding. The staff were extremely accommodating and attentive. The food was delicious especially the vegan platters we had to start. The wine was recommended by the staff and was really nice. I really like the sustainable ethos of the restaurant and the place itself is beautiful.
N. D.
A welcome addition to the food scene in Oxford. Plenty of delicious looking options on the menu without being too extensive (although vegetarian/vegan options perhaps more limited). We really enjoyed the fritto misto (crisp and tasty) and chaulk stream trout tartare to start. Our main, fillet of beef, was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. The recommended wine pairings, especially the Beaujolais, complemented the dishes well. Moreover, the service was impeccable and friendly and the atmosphere light. We'd highly recommend going for dinner and hope to return soon.
N. L.
This is a fabulous restaurant and wine bar. We enjoyed a 3 course christmas meal as a party of 7. Highlights of the meal include the creamy clam chowder and the beef, which was the most generous and delicious portion I've ever had. I can also hughly recommend the pumpkin and sage cocktail.
You won't regret visiting this beautiful restaurant.
M. M.
Food was OK, slightly overpriced for the quality. Burgers had to be sent back because neither had bacon or cheese in them, very average burgers for the price. Food was substituted without being told. Chips instead of hasselback potatoes. No one even mentioned it just bought chips out. Waiters didn't know what food was and wasn't available on the menu and kept having to ask the kitchen. Forgot about drinks that were ordered. Just overall was a very average experience, especially when you take the price into consideration. Probably wouldn't go back.
C. Y.
Great friendly staff! Also dog friendly when we came for lunch! Food was really fantastic quality too!
L. M.
I had heard quite a few good things about this place prior to visiting, so was a little surprised to see it had a 4.0 star average rating on Google Maps, which is a little low given that nearby venues score 4.5+, but I have to say 4 stars is the correct way to describe Wilding - it is very good, but a few things let it down that subsequently place it well behind some of the top places to eat in the area. In terms of the positives, the decor and atmosphere were excellent and the serving staff were friendly, polite and professional. The food was also of a high standard, and portion sizes were generous. The only downsides were pricing and relatively long waiting times. We ate midweek, at 8pm, and whilst we were seen to a table quickly and were able to order food and drinks without wait, there was a wait of over 30 minutes between our starters and mains, and another long wait between being given the dessert menus and anyone taking an order. We opted to ask for the bill instead and were a little disappointed to notice after leaving that a 12.5% service charge had been added to the bill when the menus stated a 10% charge for all tables. I feel the decision to include a mandatory service charge is already a little dodgy - the wording on the menu did not suggest it could be removed - but charging more than the menu cited made it seem deceitful too. A shame, as all else was excellent, but the long wait and steep final bill does fit this place firmly into 4-star, and not 5-star category.
L. s.
Would've liked to have given 4.5 stars to be honest. Food was incredible And everything cooked to perfection. Specials were amazing and food was all seasonal. Front of house staff could do with a lot more knowledge of what they are serving and the wines. I think that is to do with the restaurant being almost brand new though. I would highly recommend this place for fine dining! If you want good food it's spot on! If you want low prices and a lot to eat this isn't the place for you. This is high end.
A. E.
We’ve been here three or four times now. All times at least one member of the party have had the market fish, which is always amazing and every time we’ve had the butchers cut it has also been divine. The burgers are excellent and the pizzas good (although the superfood super green pizza is a little underwhelming).
The wine is delicious, especially the Freedom of the Press Bacchus made in Oxfordshire and the entire team are lovely, keen to help and very knowledgable / willing to get someone who is very knowledgeable. A brand new restaurant and a great addition to the Oxford food scene. Would recommend.
J. D.
Spacious, airy wine and food bar on Oxford's popular "little trendy street" with an excellent selection of small plates, pizzas, boards and more on a menu that features rather good seasonal and local options. Wine is (of course) excellent but there are also very lovely soft drinks, coffees and desserts. Extensive selection of wines available in the on-site shop range from budget-busting luxury to cutting-edge hipster novelty via reliable, thoughtful and delicious easy drinkers. Particularly good selection of orange wines. Child friendly, informal and you can eat al fresco in the courtyard garden.
A. B.
We had an absolutely stunning meal at Wilding for my birthday. The waiting staff were excellent, and Jack and Amelia in particular went out of their way to make it a truly special occasion. We can't thank them enough. Amazing food, amazing drinks and flawless service. We'll definitely be back.
C. M.
Had a great selection of cocktails and nibbles there in the lovely outside garden. Staff were very attentive and helpful and the wine and food was fantastic too. It was during the heatwave so being outside was the best option though the front of the venue also opens right up so it was all very airy. Inside décor was really lovely, very relaxed but unique and quite special.
M.
Had a lovely meal in this stunning new addition to the Oxford dining experience. This is a very smart, friendly and relaxing place with a good menu, amazing wine selection and a warm welcoming atmosphere.
It is such a joy to be able to dine with friends once again, so for those of you that love to give negative feedback, think long and hard before you do so. Post the pandemic and Brexit, the hospitality sector has been hit the hardest. Read the news! It is almost impossible to recruit staff at any levels so be thankful that the team at Wilding have been gutsy enough to even open!
M. L.
We were not the quietest or the most organised bunch of customers they've had, but we were very well looked after.
It was a colleagues leaving do, and we were a party of 15/20 people. Not very organised, order drinks at different times, and even though the place was full inside - we had fabulous service from Maya (who was very patient) and the team.
Some lovely wine, the sharing platters were lovely and the pizza's spot on. We didn't really get to try the wider menu, but I'll be back to maybe have a quieter experience.
Thank you all - looking forward to the next visit.
G. H.
Wilding has great potential but unfortunately is still finding its way - the food was alright, but somewhat overpriced, particularly the sharing boards. There is an amazing wine selection on the shelves but a bit of a disconnect between the table service and the wine service, making it a bit of a chore to order the wine to the table - our wine actually got served to the wrong table, and then they tried to charge us the whole bottle even though we only had about a third by the time it came to us. I'd like to shout out our waiter Toby though - it was his first night so he had some teething issues, but was nothing but smiley and friendly, and really made our night. Ultimately I think this place could be great but it needs to find its feet first.
W. B.
An excellent meal in a very comfortable atmosphere, not too crowded, very friendly service, if a bit slow. I'd highly recommend it!
T. D.
Had a light lunch here today. Lovely friendly atmosphere, delicious food (in particular the gnocchi but it was all great) and left with a rucksack full of wine. If like me you are a natural wine fan you will find yourself well catered for.
The only downside is you might get carried away and spend more than you intended, which I also did.
N. S. H.
When entering Wilding I was surprised at how big it is. The restaurant seems to stretch back for miles all the way to a sunny courtyard garden.
What I liked about Wilding was having a menu not QR codes and attentive staff who made you feel at ease. They had certainly prepared for a busy evening, I counted about 12 servers and this was on a Wednesday.
We chose Wilding for our anniversary meal mainly for the interesting and intriguing wine list. The concept of a wine oriented restaurant in Oxford is a great one and you can’t fail to be impressed by the wine store at the entrance, which we didn’t on this occasion peruse.
I was surprised though that the wine knowledge of the staff was lacking. When choosing the scallops for starter, I asked for a suggested wine match and was met with a bit of a blank face. Later, I enquired about the Greek wine. I have a fair understanding of wine but don’t profess to be an expert and Wilding’s list doesn’t have the usual suspects, which I liked about it. Our server got the manager over who immediately offered for me to taste it and advised me “it’s supposed to smell like that” and then left me to it. I was a bit surprised she couldn’t tell me about the wine, why it has a strange smell etc. I would have been very interested.
However the main reason I was a bit disappointed was the food itself. The menu sounded promising but, I felt, failed to deliver. The scallops (with roe still attached) were swimming in butter and it was really all you could taste. The chicken was very under seasoned, dry and just a bit bland although a huge portion. I heard the table next to us complaining that their steak was heavily over seasoned so possibly some work to do there.
All in all, nice service, good atmosphere and some interesting wines. Reasonable value. Would go back for a drink and maybe nibbles (our padron peppers were tasty) but probably not to dine. Shame.
N. L.
The food was very good - it was honestly the best pizza I have had, ever: so refined, so crispy. The steak, from ex-dairy cows (waste not, want not), was a real surprise as well.
The restaurant was maybe a little busy for the restaurant staff, but they'd just opened so I'm sure they've ironed that out by now.
S. D.
Excellent service, Superb food, lovely wine!
C. S.
We enjoyed our food at Wilding, however I did order a white vegan pizza without realising and was disappointed by the lack of mozarella (or tomato sauce)! There is a key for vegan and vegetarian food at the bottom of the menu but this isn't used next to the Main courses. Secondly, the staff were all seemingly very new to hospitality and our waitress did not know what enomatic wine was. After reading the other reviews, I didn't realise they also had wines on tap. None of these drinks options were clear from the menu and we were seated at the back of the restaurant nowhere near the bar/shop so didn't figure it out ourselves.
M. A.
Amazing, amazing wine, and lovely french waiter Romain 10/10
D. H.
Great food, really interesting wine list and well priced. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable!
Will definitely go back!
M. G.
Had a fantastic experience at Wilding. Great service and really good food.
A. C.
Fantastic food, fantastic service and fantastic wine at a fair price
H. B.
The service was absolutely lovely, the setting beautiful and the wine was excellent. Unfortunately, the Stony Street Burger was almost absurdly small and had a stale bun which I was barely able to cut with a knife, which spoiled my experience.
J. P.
Beautiful wine and lovely food. We were served by Erin and they were amazing! Would definitely recommend a visit.
H. S. I.
Amazing place for some wine and an Old Fashioned! This place is better than some of the neighbouring restaurants. Very friendly staff.
S. B. P.
First visit after it was changed from that awful Cafe Rouge...what an amazing experience. Super friendly staff (dan and susie) and so helpful. Some of the best service I've experienced. Great food and great selection of wine. We will return for sure! Great place *****
J. M.
First and no doubt not last visit to Wilding. Not disappointed at all. Fantastic selection of wines and great food. Friendly, attentive staff made the experience really good.

Stunning looking place with a lovely hidden courtyard garden.

When I first walked into this place I was greeted by an awesome lady who was super cool and chilled, she offered me a table and I noticed that Mononink were playing - so very Burning Man! Go there for the atmosphere, you won't regret it!
A. D.
Phenomenal visit! We had the Tomahawk steak to share, and it was sublime, as was the suggested wine pairing.
J. G.
Great steak. Lovely surroundings whether a full meal or pizza. Good wines.
