Tucked away down a not so busy alley. Amazing selection of beers and cheeses and amazing toasties. Beer is top notch, they have some cool beers from local indie producers which is great to see.
Customer service was spot on, greeted like a friend the moment I stepped through the door even though it's my first time.
R. W.
Always a delight supporting this local independent. Great selection of cheese and beers. The toasties are fantastic, but get there early for lunch as they are very limited on seating

This shop is located in the alley (Smelly alley) of Reading town centre. At night, on the month of December, there are Christmas lights that brighten the alley. The shop is catchy as it has a unique colour of dark green paint outside. They have delicious grilled sandwiches and I also love their hot chocolate! Not too sweet and is good for me. They also have lots of cheese choices including vegan , and also spirits, wines and craft beers. A must visit!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 they are also in deliveroo just in case you can’t go to town and you’re craving for their cheeses and craft beers. The staffs are also friendly , accommodating and knowledgable with their selection of cheese. 👍🏻👍🏻

It’s always wonderful to walk through the door at the grumpy goat. The incredibly knowledgable staff are always cheerful and will greet you with a smile. Then passionately guide you through the latest beers or cheeses with an unrivalled enthusiasm.
The produce is a curated selection from some wonderful local suppliers, along with some of the best from around the world. It always brings a childish smile to my face when I walk out with a bag load of treats I know I’ll be enjoying that week.
And definitely try the cheese toasties !!

The Grumpy Goat. A really great, local, find. Just down Smelly Alley in Reading. (Union Street)
Great locally roasted coffee, delicious grilled cheese sandwich and amazing selection of cheeses and friendly, knowledgeable staff.
If you're in Reading pop in, great selection of beers, spirits , sauces too.

If only every street had a Grumpy Goat. Or if only I knew it existed when I lived in Reading 5+ years ago.
Really good selection of beer - had a fair few West Coast IPAs and Hazy's, which is my preference, so I left a happy bloke.
A. G.
Enjoyed our beer and cheese pairing evening. They had Vegan cheese which was good, could perhaps do with 1more.
J. L.
My go-to craft beer shop in Reading.
Welcoming staffs with plenty selection from different countries.
Also I have nice surprise to see some of my favourite Romania brands (those I really enjoyed when I lived there)

Highly recommended independent cheese, ale & spirits vendor in the lovely Harris Arcade. A wide selection of craft and real ales, ciders, stouts, porters and lagers. Some beer in mini kegs. Loads of spirits and varieties of gin on offer, plus of course the fantastic cheese counter with the option to try before you buy. Friendly service in a cosy wee shop for the discerning palate.
R. D.
Great bottle shop with a really wide selection of beers. Can drink inside again!! Also great cheese section as you walk in the aroma is quite outstanding
A. P.
Always such a warm welcome and a fantastic selection of beer, cheese and more! Coffee and cheese toasties now available too. I'll be back to try those.

One of the best independent stores in Reading, always well stocked, staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about all of the products they stock. It's always on the route when I drop into town. Stocking a very wide range of beers and cheese, including a very nice selection of non-alcoholic beers too. A small, but very well selected, spirits selection rounds out the shop. If you're in Reading, you need to shop here.
R. G.
Delicious cheese - staff are knowledgeable and make good recommendations and describe the cheese well. The 1924? cheese was just as described - really tasty. Lovely plus point that you can get Anonymous Coffee there too. Need to try the cheese toasties next!

Hidden gem of Reading in a small alley. Worth to visit for their super delicious cheese & craft beer. There’s hundreds of craft beer can variety on shelves. Plenty in fridge. Reasonable prices. Beautiful atmosphere. Awesome friendly staff, very attentive n helpful. I think they know the trick how to make new customers. Couple of seats if u wanna enjoy ur drink n cheese there or take away. Not far from train station or high street.

I had the Classic cheese toastie from here, and I found the candied Jalapeños added a sweet yet spicy tone which complimented the cheese. Celery sticks on the side certainly were a nice palette cleanser in-between bites.
For the price it's very high quality food, with good ingredient choices and combinations.

Paradise!! I was like kid in a candy store with the awesome beer selection (whole fridge dedicated to sour beers!!!!!!) And amazing cheeses another love of mine. Staff are uber friendly and knowledgeable. Will be back for more
S. H.
Fantastic selection of beers and cheese. Friendly staff, who are very knowledgeable and passionate about their products.
Highly recommend getting tickets to the beer pairings Anne-Marie and Charlie run, they are excellent!

Amazing cheese toasties to eat in or takeaway! Well worth a lunch time visit

an Aladdins Cave of beers snuggled away in Readings Harris Arcade.
you will discover pale ales, stouts lagers, exciting new continental beers from Belgium, Holland and Italy plus much more. a cheese counter too, with some craggy looking cheddar. But no Laughing Cow or Heineken.
L. E.
I'm loving the new shop! And the toasties are delicious, plenty of filling, great cheese, tasty bread - what more could you want? Oh yes, good coffee! Tick!
F. B.
Lovely selection of cheese. Friendly and well informed service!
A. G.
Gorgeous new premises, friendly staff and great choice of cheeses (including Vegan cheese!!), ales and spirits. Now with the addition of Anonymous Coffee, it gets a whole 5 stars from me :)

Best beer and cheese shop in the area. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Amazing selection of craft beers, spirits and delicious cheese.
J. D.
Brilliant selection of cheeses and beer spirits. Select beer on tap to take away and great service. We asked for beer suggestions and they were very forthcoming, and gave us samples of cheese to try before we bought! Lovely little independent gem!

Always guaranteed to find an unusual beer or gin in here, great for buying gifts! Shop smells amazing thanks to the cheese counter. Well worth hunting it down on a visit to Reading.
A. G.
Brilliant Bottleshop. Fine selection of beers, kept up to date on untappd. Nice cheese too - don't miss the candied jalapeños
S. L.
Love cheese and beer then this is the shop for you. Staff are knowledgeable and give great recommendations.
K. W.
Even better than before in their new central location. Huge range of beers and cheeses including lots of local produce. A real asset to Reading.
R. W.
Excellent independent retailer selling an extensive range of bottled ales from throughout the UK as well as overseas lagers and beers. There is also a selection of cheeses. The staff are knowledgeable about their products and give good recommendations.
V. T.
Awesome selection of bottled beers, great for stocking up before a train journey. The prices are stuck to the bottoms of the bottles. Do have a browse -I found a 500 ml 9% ABV imperial stout for under £4. That went down very well on the train!
V. S.
I love the bark ham blue cheese and am slowly working my way through all their amazing craft beers! X
S. P.
If you like cheese and beer this place is heavenly. Great staff who are very helpful. Coffee is great as well.
N. F.
A fantastic beer (and gin, it seems) selection which you'll struggle to find anywhere else without going online. Some of the more unusual beers, or those with more extreme ABVs, are not exactly cheap but I'm sure that reflects the cost of obtaining them. Go - you won't be disappointed.
S. G.
Fabulous selection of cheese! My partner collected some Christmas beers earlier this week and I cant wait to get our Christmas cheeses sorted AND visit the new shop!
R. G.
Really worth a visit if you love craft beer and want to get your fix. Not an absolutely extensive choice but plenty to choose from. Local beers, UK beers and ones from around the world. All set out according to style which I quite like. There is even a fridge section. I visit here everytime I go to reading. Highly recommended
S. D.
Just a simply brilliant local, independent cheese, beer and spirit shop. Incredible selection of craft and other beers. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.
N. A.
Good range of beers, especially from local area. That I can't fault. The cheese counter loomed appealing but the one piece that I bought had not been kept very well and I think was a bit stale. Nice idea though, cheese and beer!
T. B.
Great beers, great staff

As my Amazon delivery failed today and I couldnt wait until tomorrow I went out i Reading searching for an independent wine merchant and The Grumpy Goat had good reviews. This merchant is certainly good but when I compare it to wine merchants such as Cloud Wine from Southampton, where I'm from then unfortunately I cannot say it is great. This shop make poor use of the space they have and as such they have an extremely limited variety of rum and brandy. Also they have all the core artisan brands but instead of stocking any of the more interesting makes they have instead opted to carry spirits made by the owner/managers partner who seems to make absolutely every possible spirit. Now I'm going to make an assumption here and state that in my experience if you try to create everything then you are unlikely to master anything. If this merchant was in Southampton I'd give it 3 stars at best but as its in Reading it still manages to stand head an shoulders above its competitors. So if you cant order online and are stuck in Reading then go here. If you have other options though I'd try them first.

Awesome local and UK cheeses and a great selection of beer, both local and from around the world. Frequent stock updates/changes, there's always something new to try here. It can be a bit pricey though.
D. C.
Friendly staff and sell some locally roasted coffee. I like it.
K. W.
Love this place. A treasure trove of delicious cheese and hard to come by ales and porter. Great and friendly service. Would recommend to all cheese and beer lovers.
G. M.
If you can't find the beer you are looking for here then beer is probably not what you are looking for :) Maybe try the cheese instead. They have a great selection of both + really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Probably my favourite place in Reading.
T. W.
An absolutely fantastic, small and very friendly purveyor of good quality alcoholic beverages and an excellent range of cheese. When the covid 19 is over, go in, partake of the goodies and go home and celebrate.
L. M.
Ordered a cheese package and a loaf of bread for delivery. The cheeses were beautifully packaged and totally delicious. The bread was yummy. This will become a regular treat 😊

Great little beer and cheese shop. Big range of UK craft, traditional and world beers and fantastic artisan cheese.
D. M.
Grumpy Goat provided the most amazing cheese selection in place of our wedding cake. Their range is fantastic and the service seamless. Only downside is not having more leftovers!
K. M.
Fantastic cheese and beer selection , and very handy as needed to buy for a buffet and we had vegetarian guests... All labeled to make it easy
Only downside is a small sport selection (vodka and gin... May rum and cognac needs adding ;))
H.

A little gem in the Harris Arcade. I won't lie its a bit whiffy owing to the cheese but if you can get past that it's a cracking place to pick up something out of the ordinary. Lots on offer with a huge variety of ales from lots of different countries.
C. O.
