Was craving for fish and chips in york and drakes fish n chips was one of the suggested place. Ordered their regular haddock fish and chips + mushy peas The portion is big ! Couldnt finish all my chips. The fish was cooked perfectly. My friend ordered their tacos and was surprised by their portion as well. Both food were reasonably priced ⭐ Would really recommend this place if you want to have big portion of fish & chips ! Service wise was average as we were seated indoors and it was quite hard to get their waitresses attention. But overall, highly recommended 💯👍

Well...I've just got to say it....Drake's is THE best fish and chips that I've ever had!!! And that's saying a lot! Chips...perfect. Fish...full of flavour and beautifully cooked. Fish batter...light and crunchy. No grease. Curry sauce...fantastic! Simply the best!

Visited as part of a 3 day weekend with my Father. Esther was our server for the evening; charismatic and kind she seated us in a cosy alcove swiftly. We both had haddock and chips, I had mint tea, mushy peas and ciabtta. He had brown bread and Yorkshire tea. I also indulged and had the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. Delicious portion of fish, good crunchy batter and a boneless slice of haddock. The chips were moreish and were just enough on the plate. A nice ambiance in the restaurant which contributed to a lovely evening out.

The temple of hearty food in York, this institution is so popular due to its immensely meticulous service and divinely fresh fare. The promisingly golden, fluffy interiors of the chips offer an impressive flavour while the Haddock was spellbinding as the crunchy batter melts with the fresh juices of the fish. Bakery sliced bread makes an absolute stupefyingly deluxe sandwich. Lesson for all visitors, don’t wait, don’t postpone, don’t put on hold, dine here and you’re stomach will be in heaven.

The best fish and chips I've ever had! Went in on whim, came out happier than ever. Portions were just right, food was piping hot. Service was prompt. And the food was mouth wateringly good! I've never had a fish and chip supper like it (mushy peas, tartar sauce and a lemon wedge); it even came with a pot of Yorkshire tea. It wasn't greasy, over/under cooked or flavourless. Freshest fish I've ever had, I was unsure, because Cod wasn't on the menu, but I must say the Haddock was to die for! (Melted in my mouth) The restaurant itself was warm and welcoming. Nicely decorated with a good atmosphere. On the night we went, there was live music (Sam and Dave you were awesome), we ate and sang along to the classics. It was a fantastic first night in York, the staff were friendly and attentive. Shout out to Danielle, she did an amazing job, a friendly and professional server. She even advised us on where to go for a night out later on! Super helpful person. The quality of service and food, made it well worth it. Price wasn't too bad either ...for everything we got it was a cheap as chips😂. I can't wait to go back to York...especially for Drakes Haddock and chips.

Brilliant food amazing service. Gluten free fish and chips amazing for the same price as a normal fish and chips. Also the chips were crispy and soft. The picture is of a gluten fish and chips. But the gf was very similar but I had a bite and it was amazing. The restaurant at the back was air-cooled and cosy. But I recommend booking if you want to eat in. We ordered a childs dinner fish and chips to, you get a fruit shoot and a iceloli with the dinner free.

Generous portions, good fish and chips place ! Lots of space inside (it doesn’t look it from the outside) as initially it strikes like take away shop so nice surprise to find lovely seating on the inside. Staff is very friendly and service was really quick… chunky chips are great, fish was tasty too and fried onion inside the burger was great too. Check out yourself I would recommend…

EDIT: spoken to the general manager/owner, who was amazing. Explained the situation and understood the frustration. She stated this shouldn't have happened and clarifications to service will be revisited in staff training. The food has always been amazing when we've been previously, and this is why I have ammended the 1 Star review below. Stay away. Charged £9.90 for 8 chicken nuggets (no chips!). When challenged said well you've been charged the cheapest option. When asked for a complaint procedure - there isn't one and the manager said they can't give away free food. Appalling attitude from the manager I feel. Just to clarify, we ordered a portion of chicken nuggets, as my son doesn't eat chips- we were charged for 2 children's meals for the privilege.

Gluten free heaven....coeliacs are in safe hands here and it's also delicious!! Sara and her team went to great lengths to ensure that my son and I could eat safely. We are coeliac and this includes corn gluten so, as we are unable to have typical gluten free batter, Sara made sure that we could have poached fish or pan fried salmon (in olive oil as most vegetable oils contain corn). The chef even came over to assure us that he had cooked our chips separately. It is so heart warming to be taken care of in this way and we really appreciated being able to eat a meal with confidence knowing that it wouldn't make us ill. Even without this care and attention to allergies, I would rate this restaurant as excellent due to the quality and taste of the food. One of the best fish and chip meals I've ever had!

Normally I’d Do The Second Option. But For A Change We Decided Too Dine In… We Walked Straight On From The Entrance. And We Were Immediately Seated Near The Window. Due to ongoing cost of living crisis I just had small chips with scraps and salt and vinegar and a can of pop. Generous portion, but I did feel the chips were a bit pale and underdone. Good value for my very simple lunch, but imagine the fish isn't particularly cheap - the same everywhere!

One of the best fish and chips I had in a long time and kudos to Drakes. The batter was light and crispy with perfect seasoning. It was melting in the mouth with the right crunch and texture. The chips were great and were cooked in fat which makes all the difference. Soft with the right bite. We also has starters, Prawn cocktail which was delicious. We ordered tea and mushy peas. The buttered bread came along with the food free of charge. There was a queue for the restaurant but it moved pretty quickly. The take away was teeming with tourists and very popular. Overall excellent, but it loses a star because we had to remind them twice about our peas as they had forgotten.

A nice old building. It has a take out section and plenty of seating inside , allowing social distancing. Table service by a friendly waitress. We ordered Haddock and chips plus gravy for 1 and 2 with curry sauce. After about 15 minutes it all turned up, scortching hot and not a drop of oil or grease in sight. Super light Crisp batter and a thick piece of fish fillet. Enough chips for three lol and nice fresh bread & butter. All for a tenner each. Nice pot of coffee and tea for 2. Fantastic quality food. It's been a while since my last review because I was traveling in China where Google was not available. But this week, I will be starting my adventure in the UK. Tonight we are having the classic UK fish and chips with a pumpkin soup starter. And without further ado, let's dive right into the review! For starters, the pumpkin soup was fresh and hot! I took a spoonful of it and burnt my throat. Very flavorful and definitely a nice starter. It also comes with two pieces of bread which is a nice addition. The fish and chips come in standard, large, and jumbo size. I got the standard size and it was already very filling so go for jumbo if you really want a challenge. As I bit into the fish, it felt as though it melted in my mouth. The batter was crispy, light, thin, and not oily. It felt like the perfect combination. I hadn't had fish and chips in a while where I haven't been eating mostly batter in a while. The waitresses were very nice and well mannered. And they were also very helpful in answering our questions. I don't remember the price of this meal but when I saw the combo price I was astounded. Not only did it come at a superb price, the meal was filling and of high quality. In conclusion, this was a great meal to start of my UK trip and I'm excited for all the future meals I will be having. And that's it for today's episode of javing it with Javier. Maybe don’t come if you are a traveler. This place is take out only(and the price is different in the restaurant space). I was bit shocked when they said they charge ketchup and mayo for 25p each!! (This is why it’s good for locals not travellers who need sauces) I’ve never been to a fish and chips place that charge you for the basic sauce. The taste was alright since I got the fish that just came out from the fryer, the chips were alright-warm but not fresh.

We first found Drake's as we explored on a quiet evening. The fish smelled so good that my husband vowed to come back. We did, for take-away lunch the next day. The meal was everything the glorious perfume had promised: a big helping of crisp, fat fries with a massive piece of perfectly-breaded cod. Not healthy in the slightest, but the epitome of a fish and chips experience in the UK--indeed, it was the best such dish my husband had on our entire trip.

Tell you what, I've been craving a good fish and chips for ages. Can safely say Drake's Fish & Chips filled that void. Definitely would recommend anyone to give it a try, I cannot fault a single thing about the food. Staff all friendly as well. Only suggestion would be to have tables numbers on the tables, as poor lad had to bounce around all the tables to see who ordered the Garlic Mushrooms.

Went to Drakes yesterday but the queues for the restaurant and takeaway was really long so I went back today, you would think having really long queues would mean they serve good food, you would be wrong, they serve fantastic food. I love fish and very choosy about where I eat because not everyone can cook it right. My fish was superb with just enough light, crispy batter to coat it and wonderful chips, crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. You really get a plateful of fish and chips and garden peas again cooked to perfection and to top it all off an excellent lager. My only regret is that you can’t deliver to Birmingham. I will come back to York just for your fish and chips, its worth travelling for.

I don’t want to think it’s because I am not British, but every other white customer who came after us got theirs. Hmm. Then I asked for the bill. They gave me a copy of the bill and I said I wanted to pay by card. Waitress said she would come back. 15 minutes later, I was still waiting. I ended up having to leave my table and personally walk to the their work area just so I could pay and go on with my day. Edit - Came back 2 days later, and had a completely different experience. This time around we were given proper attention and felt like the staff were being extra considerate. We still had to ask for tea, but the tea cups were already placed on our table. The food was amazing just like our previous visit. Overall felt like this time was a complete 180 from the last.

The fact I can actually get some decent gluten-free fish and chips is a miracle! After asking if there were any GF options, the staff member behind the counter suggested the meal I had. A large flaky and soft haddock in gorgeous batter, crispy hot chips with no sign of sogging and thick mushy peas on the side. The portion was so large I had to split it, and friendly polite service makes me hughly reccomend this place. I even suggested it to a staff member on thebchristmas market. Give it a go if you're gluten intolerant and looking for decent fish and chips :)

Not overly greasy & none of that sponge like raw goo, next to the flesh of the fish. Flesh of the fish itself had a very pleasant & ever so slight milky & creamy undertone. Chips were cooked fresh. Crispy & golden exterior. Light & fluffy on the inside. Food was red hot! No sign of greeny grey ends or eyes in my chips. They say 80% of the eating is done with the eyes. The best Chippy in York by far. Very friendly staff HUGE portion sizes. Chips are always fresh and lovely the fish is the exact same and the Steak Pie is to die for. Honestly there is nothing on this menu that you can fault and the restaurant has an old school classic cozy British feel, visited as well during the Jubilee week and it was even decorated for that. Brilliant place and even the tea comes in classic potsq and the coke comes in classic glass bottles which are hard to find these days. Can get pricey if you are on a budget but even then it is worth it. Could give 10 stars if I could!

Was recommended this by the ladywho sold us the citysightseeingtour tickets. I went with my parents and young son. On arrival we were asked to wait a few minutes whilst they arranged a table. When we went in it was lovely and clean. We ordered 1 child's fish n chips, 1 adults fish n chips and 2 seniors fish n chips. The adults n seniors meals included a pot of Yorkshire tea. The child's meal included a soft drink. The food arrived quite quickly and was hot and delicious. One of the nicest fish n chips meals I've eaten. The staff were very polite and friendly. We read the chip shop reviews beforehand in ready for our recent trip to York. Drake's was near to our regular apartment with great reviews so decided to give it a try. OMG the best Fish and Chips we both have EVER had...ten stars and then some. ******************************************************************** Two of us (adults) had takeaway regular haddock each... one portion of chips to share... one of us curry sauce the other mushy peas...took them back to our apartment and OMG the haddock just melted in the mouth the batter tasty and the perfect ratio to the fish. Tasted both the curry sauce AND the mushy peas both really tasty. We had some bread and butter with it and were stuffed. Originally asked for the large haddock and they only had regular but it was honestly enough and fantastic value for money. So on the day of departure decided to go to the resturant part. There was a queue in which we were offered to wait 15mins or book a table and come back. We decided to wait. Very quickly... less than 10mins later we were taken to our table. We ordered the haddock and chips each...again the regular which came with tea and a side. We again had the mushy peas and curry sauce. Beautiful tasty lunch...tea too. We ordered an extra side of bread and butter...a thick slice of fresh bread and an individually wrapped butter each. Lovely tasting bread. We were not rushed even though they were busy. Filling...tasty...hot and again fantastic value for money. York is full of eateries with lots of choices...if fish and chips is your thing this place is a MUST. Staff are very polite and professional... the food A class. What more could you want? You must try it I will guarantee you will be delighted. Whilst waiting in the queue we spoke to other York regular visitors like us and they said exactly the same thing. Maybe even try the deep fried Mars bar...IF you have room?

This fish and chip takeaway and restaurant was the first eaterie I visited on returning to live in York a couple of months ago. I've been back several times, and each time, the quality and service has been maintained. Although Covid restrictions mean that the restaurant section hasn't always been open (so I haven't yet used it), and it's usually necessary to stand outside while waiting to collect one's food, this doesn't detract too much from the overall experience. Last time, I had a large portion of chips with my fish and it was LARGE! So be warned, unless you're a glutton like me. Good, tasty fish, good service and reasonably priced, so I don't think you'll be disappointed.

As I was walking down the corridor, one of the workers behind the counter came and asked if I wanted to eat in and how many for a table. He directed me to my table and I sat down and looked at the menu. There are some good menu options and good value meal deals. Its a good place to spend some money without forking too much. I recommend the Yorkshire experience, even if I haven't tried it. Unlimited Yorkshire Tea is a thumbs up regardless. I ordered a two course meal, starter and main. I got the scampi and salad with a j20 bottle. The scampi was fresh and beautifully battered and soft, although a little saltier than I expected. The salad was fresh and well presented with the scampi and buttered bread and tarter sauce. However, when going to the last two scampi, I when I took a bite, it was warm but then a cold area appeared. I decided to look at them and couldn't tell if it was raw or not. I think it somehow wasn't able to be cooked in the certain areas. When the ladies asked if I was okay/order was okay. I did try and attempt to ask about the cold bits of scampi. I was thinking for a few seconds to use the right wording until they asked another question or attended to another customer. I just gave up trying to talk to them, they don't wait enough for me to answer. However they still remained friendly and polite. My main course was good, the fish was nice and the chips was too. 3 stars because of two thing, the staff while friendly and polite. Seemed they didn't acknowledge that I was thinking about how to answer if everything was okay for me and instead asked another question. And the 2 scampi, as I am writing. I feel a bit sweaty than normal and a very faint ache in my stomach. But that might be me overthinking. It's good food for a good value. If you're looking for higher range, then the hook fish and chip restaurant is pricey but has a slight edge in quality.

Food is of high quality, but let down by sullen staff. If you aren't passionate about serving food, then you should not be in the business. We asked, as the menu suggested, about the dessert of the week and the server stated that they "don't have any specials"...case of cba or dns?? Either way, management should ensure its customers are left with a positive experience all the way around, not just rely on the quality of the food.

Have to give this 5 stars as regular visitors to York. My kids refuse to eat anywhere else, they always ask can we go to Drakes every single time.
