This was hands down the best meal we had in York. Each of the 3 courses were incredible, nicest wine I've had in ages (rioja) and the staff were so friendly and welcoming, they are a credit to the establishment.

A genuinely lovely dining experience. The food is packed full of flavour and well seasoned. The service is great, very friendly but not over bearing. Price for a three course meal for two, with several glasses of wine, cocktails was just shy of £100 so all in all a highly recommended restaurant that we would definitely visit again.

Fantastic ambience .To be honest cannot rate our meal highly enough had a steak with peppercorn sauce and it was absolutely delicious.There was a lovely lady and young gentleman serving and both where very friendly with excellent customer service.It had a lively and young crowd vibe so was quite lively for a Monday night which I enjoyed.No wonder they have five stars .Would definitely recommend when in York.

Recommended in York. Superb Argentinean steak and could be the best in town. Suitable price for the quality and size of the meals and service. We had the chorizo and nachos as a starter with Argentinian beer and a cider. For the mains, we has the large (400g) Chuleton (rib eye) and bife de chorizo (sirloin strip). The mains were literally perfectly cooked (medium and medium rare), very tasty and juicy. The dish came with wild rocket salad and chips. You are given the option of any sauce with the salad and steak. We preferred the Chimichurri with the steaks. We also had with the meat a bootle of organic wine “Passo Doble” Malbec and it was perfect with the steaks. The kids had the chips, salad and vegetables and came as part of the main meals which was great. The kids had pineapple juice but we had many juices to choose from. The waiters Augustin and Augustina were very good, welcoming and friendly. The owner, cook and waiters are all from Argentina, so it was as we were in Argentina for a moment. Very enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere. The place is well arranged and looked after with an Argentinian steak house decor. Will come back with my family. Gracias chicos. Nos vemos pronto.

The place is extremely nice and cozy and the staff is friendly. The meat is perfect.. The chicken skewers and the parrillada mixta were great and both very tender. The dessert were yummy and we really enjoyed everything!

A cosy argentinian place with tasty meal. Waiters were fast and chairs were comfortable. It is a stake house and stakes were not very tasty, just average big size pieces of meat. Dinner for two with couple glasses of wine will be around £60. They also have not so much space, so you feel not alone there.

Visited this amazing restaurant on Halloween for our wedding anniversary.The starters were very tasty, I had the steak skewers for main course. The steak was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. My wife had chicken skewers, the chicken too was cooked to perfection and was moist. Amazing restaurant. Went with our little girl who they accommodated exceptionally well and were so friendly and hospitable. We had sausages and ribs to start which fell off the bone and were delicious. Mains we both had steak cooked to perfection with the most amazing flavour accompanied with peppercorn sauce which just added such a beautiful flavour. Enjoyed a fantastic family meal at El Gaucho after working up an appetite on one of York's ghost walks. The quality of the steaks is exceptional, between us we tried the rib eye, sirloin, rump and a breaded steak and all of them were cooked to perfection. Sides and sauces were all very good and there's a good selection of Malbecs on the wine list. Very convenient if you're staying at the Holiday Inn or Travelodge at the south end of the city centre.

What a great steak! Nice service from all of the staff. Good cocktails to start with and a nice wine list. A bit crowded for these social distancing times but we felt safe and comfortable during the entire experience. We had three steaks and they were all cooked beautifully. The additional sauces didn't add a huge amount which was a shame as everything else was superb. Crispy chips and a nice salad were a tasty addition. Puddings were all good and a decent coffee to finish off. Would go again.

My brother took me here for my birthday. I had the fillet steak. One of the best steaks I have ever had. I like mine rare and it was cooked just right for me. Also tired of getting a steak cooked rare that is cold and served on a cold plate. Probably for health and safety reasons in case one gets burned. This wasn't. It was on a warmed plate on top of a cold plate. The food was piping hot. If in York again would definitely visit again. Service also good. Attentive and efficient without being intrusive.

Visited with family and my husband last Saturday. Looks unassuming from the outside, but with lovely decor and wonderful atmosphere, it is a real gem. I thoroughly enjoyed my cocktails and the drinks list was vast. The staff were attentive, but not overbearing. The steaks were just lovely and my husband was very happy with his blue fillet! So glad we visited. Will definitely be back in the future with more steak lovers and a recommendation for friends.

Took visiting relatives for a nice meal out. All the dishes were fantastic, the wait staff were lovely and due to a miscommunication and a language barrier (among the diners, not with the staff) we accidentally left two tips! The tables could do with being bigger considering the size of the dishes and the dessert menu would benefit from being expanded but the focus is all on the meat and they certainly lived up to the hype. My rib eye was so juicy I didn't need a sauce although I'll probably try one on a future visit.

Reading at reviews and talking to friend I had really high expectations of this place (plus being from tuscany, we have big steak traditions). Rarely when I have high expectations I fully get satisfied, but this restaurant was absolutely amazing. Quality of steaks and starters, variety of choice, service, vibe, wine... everything was absolutely perfect. Christmas meal with my gf, I had a starter with ribs, Argentinan sausage (its worth it) and empanadas.. then we shared 2 delicious cuts of steak which comes with 2 sides included, baked potatoes, chips, onion rings, salad and mixed veggies... all was sublime... Still waiting to get dessert now, looking forward to it... :p

Absolutely fabulous. We booked in advance and, when we walked in it was empty. By the time we left it was full. A bottle of fruity red, steak that melts in your mouth and a starter that was a meal in itself. The staff were so helpful and it came in a lot cheaper than we thought it would. Wow! Had an excellent meal here recently when visiting York. We were keen to visit based on the reviews we read and we certainly weren't disappointed. Tried the Emponadas for my starter and went for the 14oz sirloin for main. Both superb. The steak was absolutely huge and I had to battle hard to finish it- but it would have been a sin to leave any. Thought the restaurant was a nice size, not particularly big and the atmosphere was very good. We found the staff helpful and passionate about the food. Only slight downer was that Quilmes beer wasn't available, was looking forward to drinking a few. The prices are fairly high but I thought it was justified with the quality. Hoping to be back sometime!

We visited it on holidays to take the dinner, and we got absolutely satisfied. The staff (nice, attentive original Argentinians) were always giving us recommendations, but respecting our tastes and desires. The both steaks we got were very tasty, perfectly cooked, right in the requested coction point. The Malbec wine we drank (following their proposal) was also good and matching nicely with our plates. The atmosphere is nice to go there with family or friends, but also for a couple's dinner. The prices were affordable and very reasonable. If you are in York, I strongly recommend it.

El Gaucho is THE best place to eat steak in York.... No doubt. The quality of the Ribeye is meltingly tender and cooked to perfection, as we're the accompaniments we had with our meal on the night. The restaurant has a lively but not rowdy ambience to it, its spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated and competivelly priced. A big shout out must go to our server for the night, Jessica, who was attentive without being intrusive, very polite, and kept smiling through what was a very busy evening for all the staff. 100 % recommended.

When I planned a long weekend visit to York I asked a work colleague from York to recommend a steak house. He gave El Gaucho without hesitation You can't ignore a locals advice so booked for 2 and was very glad I did. Both starters and mains were superb I had fillet cooked exactly as asked for rare to medium but leaning to the rare. My wife had the scewers Great service and got busy fast even on a Monday Will recommend to anyone who visits York. The locals already know. I thought prices were very fair too

Had the combination starter to share with my better half and the chuleton (Rib Eye) with a baked potato and vegetables. Combination starter was very tasty and the rib eye was excellent, great charring on the outside but still medium rare, super juicy and full flavoured. The veg on the side was excellent too (mostly roasted rather than boiled). The restaurant itself had a nice atmosphere, slightly rustic like somewhere you might find on holiday. Great value too reflecting the fact this is not an uber trendy steakhouse but more of a local hidden gem kind of place. Would recommend the Norton Privado 2014 wine there too.
