really fast service and amazing food. fresh food and tasty. friendly staff, good portions. wide range of drinks, cocktails and milkshakes. a little cold but nothing bad. clean and comfortable seating. not bad price, good location, 100% will go again update: revisited again, we’ve both been quite ill (both ends, no more info needed). food was still good and had amazing service, but an hour later we were in the toilet

WOW! We stumbled across this little gem and decided to give it a try after reading all the reviews. I can honestly say, that if you want a taste of true american french deep south soul food, this is the place! We spoke at length with our amazing waitress who also happened to be the owner and she was so lovely. The food was not only delicious and faultless, but also piping hot and so fresh! Oh, and the cocktails are fab too! We can't wait to go back! UPDATE: We visited again 2 days later and had different dishes which were as delicious as the ones we ate on the our first visit. In addition, we were incredibly touched by the owners kind gesture! Thank you so much. 🥰 I will be back in August with my husband 😁.

My partner and I stopped here on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Absolutely blown away by the portion size! The food was delicious too! Definitely will be coming back here next time I'm in York.

Some good dishes, but room for improvement. Burger was overcooked and tough and chewy. Buffalo wings needed dredging in buffalo sauce, were oddly dry, with the hot sauce woven into the batter / breading Onion rings were superb - crisp, well seasoned, fresh sweet onion Waffle and chicken - chicken needed more seasoning, waffle didn't taste terribly fresh Shrimp - batter/breading was peeling away Fries - well cooked, well seasoned and flavourful Cocktails - ok, had a gin based one, with grapefruit and elderflower. Milkshakes were supposedly amazing, so said my friends!

Went for dinner and it was amazing. Cocktails awesome (pretty sure the rum and cokes were free pour!), husband had the fish tacos and I had the mega mac n cheese, both fantastic! And then I thought I’d attempt dessert! S’mores waffle. I’ve never seen a dessert bigger! We absolutely loved the whole place and wouldn’t hesitate in returning!

Had a fabulous dinner last night. Starters were buffalo wings & buttermilk fried shrimp , both decent sized portions and delicious. For mains I had the short ribs and my wife the fish tacos, the short ribs were off the scale , the meat literally fell of the ribs ... yum yum. The tacos whilst tasting great only contained one small piece of chicken which was quite disappointing, I did mention this to our waitress who didn't look too surprised ( guess other diners have previously mentioned this ... ). For desert we shared a peanut brownie with icecream. All the above was washed down with draft beer... whilst on beer it would have made the experience a tad better to have had American beer on draft .. it's only a small point but I think valid. So overall a great dinner , lovely staff and apart from one point super food so big thanks to the kitchen .. just sort the tacos out 👍 No hesitation in recommending Fancy Hanks.

My friends and I came here back in March and it was wonderful! Sadly it doesn't get the same praise this time around. It wasn't terrible, but it was only okay. The atmosphere was very flat but the place was extremely noisy. We were given a table right in the middle of the room, and were surrounded by loud groups of people who were clearly out for Saturday night drinking, which is completely fine, but made it impossible for my partner and I to hold a conversation. We ordered drinks, my cocktail was missed and I didn't get it until the food came, they did apologise and I suppose it isn't a huge deal but it was slightly annoying. I had blackened cajun fish, and it was nice, but not amazing. My partner had steak, which he loved! Huge compliments to the chef. I had key lime pie which I hadn't had before and it was delicious, my partner had smores waffle, which he said was amazing. Overall the place was good. Maybe I was just having a bad night, or I'm getting old! But it was too noisy for my liking 😔

A good but not amazing place. The chicken tenders here tasted very nice with the chips! The portion seemed a little small though. Price wise it is not too bad with two of us eating & a soft drink coming to a reasonable price for food in York. Nice friendly staff made our meal more inviting & the atmosphere in Fancy's Hanks is welcoming. A strong variety of food. Recommend it for quick tasty food where you can also sit down & relax.

Rump steak was cooked perfectly, a really nice cut of beef, seasoned and cooked with skill. Cocktails were imaginative and tasty, get there during happy hour! The real star of the show was the service, the waitress was attentive and the service was excellent. The menu was good, nice selection of interesting items. The music was good, the rear/side outside area looked nice too. We will be back and we’ll recommend.

What a fantastic restaurant, the food was great and we would definitely go again when in the area. We were glad we booked as they were fully booked that evening. Child friendly and they had a great range on the children's menu, good portion sizes! The only downside was that when I rang I mentioned it was my husband's birthday and they said they would do something special like a candle in the dessert but there was nothing unfortunately😔 The bathroom could also do with some TLC but other than that it was great and we enjoyed our meal in the dining area outside. Tried to get in on a Saturday evening but they were all booked up for inside, so I would recommend booking in advance by phone, as our booking then for Sunday evening didn't go through, but they were very friendly and booked us in when we phoned. The food is DELICIOUS. I had the Chicken & Waffle and it is one of the tastiest meals I've had and I would go there again to have it. Overall I think the meals are a bit pricey, but a wonderful place if you are celebrating a special occasion. Had a really nice vibe.

With a range of meals from the southern United States, Fancy Hank's knows what it is and does it very well. I went for the chicken and waffles with a side of fries, which is what sold the restaurant to me in the first place, and I wasn't disappointed. The chicken was moist, the breading was crisp, the bacon was as I like it - solid but still has a chew, forget that stuff you can pick up and snap - while my partner went for the shrimp po boy, which I could have been ordered and been totally happy with. In fact, there were about ten things on the menu which all fought for my attention. The service was great, it was well priced, and I can't fault it. Even their music choices were quality.

Would give 4.5 stars if I could but fell just short of 5 stars. That said, the service was really good, and the food was also excellent, especially the buffalo wings. One thing that has always put me off places however is service charges added to the bill without warning. I always tip if I feel it's warranted (in this case I would have done) but I feel that this is my choice and not the choice of the owner. As I say though, our experience was a very good one all in all. Thank you Fancy Hanks.

If you like American style food or want to try it, this place is worth the visit. I had a tasty massive steak with delicious mash potatoes. I added some corn on the cob, which had a lovely grilled flavour to it, dressed in butter and it was moreish. I would go here again and try more but I return to London tomorrow!

Just popped in for lunch on a whim, and so glad we did. Plenty of Deep South staples on the menu, making it difficult to choose but very difficult to go wrong. The food had all the wonderful comforting flavours I was hoping for and was perfectly executed. This is now our go to place for easy going, good food in York and we are excited to work our way through the rest of the menu.

We had a really great experience here, we did a last minute booking at a really busy time, while York was dealing with a massive heatwave. The short rib was the best I ever had and the staff are extremely welcoming and attentive. Excellent that it is dog friendly, our pup approves.

Booked Fancy Hanks for a change on our visit to York, we were slightly early and showed to our seats. The children's menu had lots for our picky eater, it was a win win. The food was delicious and plenty of it. We'll definitely be returning to this gem.

To their credit they responded very professionally and well to my dislike of their burger. Let me explain. I have always loved burgers and Fancy Hanx came highly recommended. Unfortunately, I have an intolerance to liver and even hate the smell. This tasted like there was liver in it. The owner assured me that this was not the case and will follow it up with the supplier. They also deducted the burger from the bill. Excellent customer care and service. Sorry did not like it.

Service was awesome for us and our 1yr old son. Waiters and waitresses were all super friendly, chatting with our son. We were seated in the front of the shop, by ourselves which was perfect given the current situation. If anything, food came a little too quickly, but maybe we were enjoying ourselves too much? The Cajun Chicken Burger is awesome and I loved the slaw. Mac and Cheese was OK. Wife says the Corn burger was also nice. She had the Charleston Fizz which she enjoyed, tasted like those old Blackjack sweets 🤣 If we visit York in future, we would come back.

I love the menu and staff were all nice. I feel like the fried chicken at least needs salt adding at each step of the frying process, and some garlic powder/spices/MSG adding to the batter. To me there was very little flavour and this was a shame since the crunch and juicy texture was all great. I understand why oversalting a fryer can cause problems but for foods like chicken breast seasoning is a must. Will be returning soon for more good food. Would love a few more Keto diet friendly options in terms of drink and food but that won't stop me coming on a cheat day.

We have come here many times. The cocktails are good, especially when they are on 2-4-1. I always get the Fried Chicken and Waffles, with a side of gravy, which is gorgeous. The mac and cheese is tasty, though the portion is small. We keep coming back.

Worth booking as it gets busy. Standard American type food but felt disappointed after reading good reviews. The chicken we ordered was cold. We did let them know and then they gave us a warmed up one which was good but left a bit of a dampener on the meal (paying £12 for this dish). Fried pickles were good. Found Fancy Hanks while walking around York and looked appealing from the outside so took a chance. Staff are very friendly, lack of uniform made it awkward to figure out who is staff and who is a patron, but I appreciate the casual laid back approach to it. Food was really good, I had bacon mac n cheese, no complaints there. Restrooms, 1 person at a time as they aren't big enough to accommodate more, we went on a lazy Sunday afternoon and had to wait a while to use the facilities. I'd imagine on a busy night the queues would be longer. My main gripe was the final bill, our server told me the tip, which was already on the printed receipt was optional, but it being added to the bill didn't make it feel optional and I'd imagine for anyone not wanting to or unable to afford to leave a tip would make for an awkward or embarrassing situation. We had every intention of leaving a tip and would have more than likely tipped more than what was on the receipt, but having felt being forced in to it soured our dining experience and for that reason alone, we won't be returning.

Went for lunch today. The food really was delicious. Staff were friendly and attentive. The fries were proper home cooked style, The chicken burger was light and crispy but still moist. My partner had the rump steak medium rare which was cooked to perfection. The onion rings didn't arrive with the meal as the chef wasn't happy with them, which I thought was great as it shows they take pride in what they're putting out. 5/5 looking forward to our next visit.

Not sure if I went on an off day (it was during EOTHO) but I had such high expectations for this place, and I was a little disappointed. The food was alright, but I ended up leaving half of it. I felt it was just a little bland (shrimp sandwich). We also ordered the salad wedge and the lettuce was extremely bitter, we could only have 1 bite and left it. There wasn't much sauce or toppings on the salad either which was disappointing.

Lovely little gem in the centre of York. We were a party of 12 and all of us enjoyed our food. The shrimp was juicy and delicious, the fish tacos with the salsa was lovely (could have done with a bit more fish though!) and the service was brilliant. All dishes very reasonably priced too. Such a lovely lady served us and it made all the difference to our experience. We would be happy to return and would definitely recommend.

Nice decor and friendly staff. The cocktails were the highlight of the night, varied and well done, with happy hour meaning 2 for 1 in certain hours. Some of the food was great, but some felt mediocre. Chicken fried steak - the batter just fell off the steak, making it difficult to eat together. Fried gherkins were great! The chips were well done with a good crisp. With a lot of fried and battered foods on the menu, it started to taste oily towards the end - so limit how much fried stuff you get.

Have visited on many occasions and the food is always excellent, must give a special mention to the Chicken and Waffles as well as the Buffalo Chicken Wings. Cannot speak for the cocktails personally but I have had reports from friends that they are also excellent and the beer is also top quality, an easy to drink lager which pairs well with the food.

There is a saying, never judge a book by its cover. This place is that place. It looks average but the food and cocktails are next level. The only bad thing I can say about this place is that I come from Wolverhampton and the waiter thought I was a Villa fan! Otherwise very attentive staff with excellent service. We rang up and booked a table within the hour which was lucky a whilst there all tables were fully booked and a good stream of customers. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, staff were lovely, attentive and gave advice on meals and drinks. The food was bloody lovely as my other half says. We both had steak with onion rings and the iceberg lettuce salad. You do pay extra for these but they are side orders so 🤷. We then ordered 2 puddings and shared them. We ordered the key lime pie and the waffles! We were in heaven! Amazing! Will definitely be eating here again on our future days to York!

Very busy popular place. I booked a while back after reading reviews on TripAdvisor. We were quickly seated and greeted by a couple of staff (maybe owners). Who took time to recommend food and speak to my son. I had the rump steak with Jack Daniels sauce. It was cooked to perfection. My son had the cheese burger which was a proper "patty" with thick meat. He woofed this down in no time. No picking or looking at it he said it was the best burger ever. This was one of the BEST MEALS I have had in as long as I can remember! Best BBQ in the UK, and rivals the best I have had anywhere (including Memphis, Tennessee, Alabama, or Texas!) We just spent 4 nights in York and tried everything from high end to street eats. Our last night in the city, we ate at Fancy Hank's and debated changing our departure time just so we could sneak in one more meal there!! It was truly THAT good. I am from the states and love BBQ more than most other foods... not only was this the best BBQ I have had in the UK, but I would say it rivaled even the best BBQ I have had in the US South! Everything felt perfectly aligned to match their "southern comfort" ethos. The hospitality was friendly and warm (shout out to Callum working through shin splints), the art and music were soulful, the portions were generous, and every single thing we tried was EXCEPTIONAL. I had the slow braised short rib and have never seen meat roll off the bone like this. The shrimp small plate was unspeakably well-prepared as well. And their BBQ sauce I would drink with a straw! 10/10 in every way.

Fantastic food and service. The chicken bennie was one of the best dishes I've had in York! I've travelled a lot over the south of the U.S and the biscuit genuinely lived up to the standards over there and better than many pretty good restaurants in the south U.S. I would say the American breakfast could do with something extra however, it was a bit lackluster, especially in comparison to the chicken bennie. Maybe it could include a biscuit as well? The cocktail list is amazing and I've only tried a couple but will definitely be working my way through it when I come back next time for the main menu! (And yes I just couldn't resist a cocktail for breakfast, they looked too good to pass up). We decided to sit outside as we had a young pup with us too and we didn't want him having an accident inside (although it's FANTASTIC that you allow dogs inside) and they put the roof over us in case it rained too and gave our little pooch some water. Excellent food! My husband and I are originally from South Carolina and Mississippi so when we saw the southeastern US menu we were very doubtful, but it was great. Not 100% authentic but pretty close for the UK and delicious. We had a shrimp poboy and fish tacos and mega-Mac (basically Mac & Cheese with some extras). All were very good. My drink was great as well (the Louisiana). Highly recommend you go if you’re in York!

Fancy Hanks is a relatively recent spot, that opened in 2019 after two brothers visited the Deep South USA and found inspiration. Boasting a bright vibrant exterior, and minimalist interior that seems popular these days, it has made its mark on the local food scene offering something different than the usual York eateries. Nice relaxed ambience throughout the restaurant too. Food was good and servers really did pamper us. All in all really good place to go. Only negative- smoky alleyway (cigarette smoke).

Excellent dining experience. The menu sounds delicious but the food still surprises in how great it is! The chef definitely knows his stuff, the flavours are spot on. There were 3 of us and we all ordered different things and all of us were impressed. We all highly recommend the belly pork and crab cake starters. The butter milk chicken waffle, beef & black bean chilli and chicken and sausage jambalaya are yummy. Then there’s the dessert menu....wow! I don’t normally order dessert but couldn’t possibly resist peanut butter brownie and it did not disappoint, absolutely awesome! And don’t underestimate the portions , they are generous. Along side the food, the drink selection is also great. Definitely try the cocktails, I particularly enjoyed the Louisiana and also the Tasty Hanks Beer is very good. We will certainly be returning to Fancy Hanks, thank you for the experience and for the excellent service.

(The following review is for The Cut & Chase, which Fancy Hanks recently moved into) Tasty roasts - even for vegetarians. We popped in here earlier today almost by chance, but were pleased to see that they had Sunday roasts for both meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. (I've had some pretty sub-par 'vegetarian roasts' in York's pubs, but The Cut & Chase's came with all the trimmings, so I was quite excited). Thankfully, it delivered. Really tasty grub with gravy, roast potatoes, and a nice big Yorkshire pud. The bean patty was decent, too, if a bit dry (more on that in a second). My only real gripes would be that the roast potatoes were a wee bit pale (they were very tasty, but I've cooked crisper in my oven at home), and they're a bit stingy with the gravy. The more cynical side of me would say this is intentional, since they sell extra gravy at two quid a pop(!), but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt this time. Either way, at £15 for one course, they can definitely afford to be a bit more generous with the gravy servings!. Regardless, this is a great little place to eat and enjoy a drink. The staff are friendly, and they even had live music on the day we visited from a very talented singer/guitarist. And, finally, a decent veggie-friendly Sunday roast! Well worth a visit.

Food fell between okay and good. For example the gnocchi tasted more like mashed potatoes in fried breading, but the basalmic and squash puree helped immensely. My wife's lamb was cooked just right and had good texture but strangely lacked flavour. The rhubarb cheesecake dessert was bland but the fruit crumble was a perfect mix of tart and sweet. The service was okay to poor. We were there on a Sunday evening and the restaurant appeared half full or less. There were servers visible looking for someone to help. Yet the kitchen was extremely slow and the sometimes the servers were strangely absent for additional drink orders or to take away plates between the slowly-served courses. Our coffee, ordered with dessert, was delivered 10 to 15 minutes before dessert arrived. The bill was around 75 GBP for the drinks, a salad, two diners, and a shared dessert. Our impeccably served and delicious dinner at Rustique the night before was under 70 GBP and included two more drinks than we had at Cut and Chase.
