Very friendly and hospitable people. The food was wonderful (all plates were clean 😁)! For kids it's possible to have some dishes prepared as 'very mild' (our son had the Korma which he absolutely loved!). The appearance and interior of the restaurant itself was nice and had a modern look, but we would have loved to have a more Indian feel to it. Nevertheless, it'sabout te food and that was great: a real recommendation!

No filter required for these colourful curries. First meal on York last night I went here. This is a Keralan Indian restaurant that has many dishes rarely found in standard Indian restaurants. As Kerala is very costal is opted for seafood choices. Poppadom for starters, Angamali Cheemeen Curry Curry (Prawns with Mango), Kappayum Meenum (fish with cassava on the side), Thenga Choru (coconut rice) and Kerala Paratha. These curries complimented each other well, one being spicy and the other sweeter. All of it was super delicious. I’d happily return to try more of their unusual dishes. Attentive customer service too. A must if in York.

Food is very tasty however the service is terrible, especially when there's a large group in the restaurant. We waited over 1 hour for our main courses despite ordering before this large groups arrival and when consulting with staff on this, they showed no understanding and refused to accept we had waited for an unacceptable period of time. I would return on a quieter day as the food is lovely but wasn't happy with how we were treated and talked to by the staff.

The food was not seasoned, especially the meat. We have added lots of salt and pepper because it had no taste. But with salt and pepper added the food was deliciuos. Maybe a little more seasoning would make the dishes perfect! The service is excellent as well.

Wonderful restaurant with authentic food from Kerala in South India. Staff were really friendly and helpful and very happy to suggest which dishes were vegan for my partner (and loads were). Meal for four, to celebrate a birthday. Booked purely on the basis of previous reviews, and we were royally rewarded. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating, taking time to ensure we knew about Keralan food and spices. We opted for pre-meal poppadoms, homemade 'crisps' of banana flakes and other snacks, all served with their take on mango chutney, mint dressing and lime pickle. These weren't the usual ones you get in high Street Indian restaurants, and were incredibly tasty. Our mains were chicken korma, railway mutton, thalassi chicken and a vegetarian dish. All the dishes are classed as medium spiced, though again the staff were keen to offer milder versions of these or other dishes, so you didn't just 'have what you usually have'. We accompanied the main courses with a range of naan breads with garlic, chilli and cheese. These were of a perfect size to not overface you, and were very reasonably priced at under £5 each. With two rounds of drinks, a mix of beer and sodas, the bill was just under £100. Thoroughly outstanding value, exquisitely flavoured food, leaving us feeling sufficiently saited but not stuffed, we would heartily recommend it to anyone wanting to try the taste of Kerala, South West Indian food.

Telling us we should not be too long..I.e. no more than an hour....when we got there they took 30 mins to take our order...30 mins to bring our food...15 mins to eat ..we asked for our bill straight away they took 25 mins to bring bill after we asked for it twice....for someone in a rush they took ages

Great authentic Kerala food, excellent ambience. Mutton was a bit tough but tasted really nice. Kids loved the dosa and Utthapam. Service could have been a bit quicker but we'll worth the wait and the restaurant seemed busy even on Tuesday evening. Would definitely recommend.

This is a lovely restaurant offering delicious South Indian Kerelan food, and even with a surprising Syrian dish, the menu is excellent! My wife and son visited on the hottest day of the year, so the AC was a blessing, and for a moment we could’ve imagined we might’ve been back in Kerala! The decor is relaxed and the service present yet discreet. But all said the food was/is the star!! Again well worth a visit.

We visited this restaurant once again and we weren't disappointed. Last time I tried whole seabass and it was delicious. This time I went for a recommendation from a waiter and had spicy curry with fish and it was delicious! The spices and fish was perfect. We didn't book on Saturday, but that found a table for me and my husband in the matter of minutes. Friendly staff and timing was perfect for Saturday night. I recommend this restaurant to my vegetarian friend just because they have so many veggie options and they sound great. We will come back for sure!

We recently visited Kalpakavadi as part of a large group for my Dads 60th Birthday, and can't praise it enough! The staff were incredibly accommodating and friendly from start to finish. Booked in advance and wasn't disappointed. The service is very good and there are many interesting dishes on the menu I'd never seen on an Indian restaurant menu before. We've been regulars here since they opened, whether in the restaurant or getting take away (before, during, and after the pandemic), and we've never had a bad meal. If you expect to see all the usual suspects on the menu, you may be disappointed. If you want tasty and authentic Southern Indian cuisine, you are in for a treat.

when you accept someone's order, you must need to make sure about the quantity and food items, no matter it is your closing or hours. Egg was missing in chicken biriyani and quantity was not enough as mentioned. I know it's Saturday. But customer should be the first priority even if with a small order. The only odd thing to complain about was we ordered popadoms and pickles and they came out after they started bringing the mains out - we wanted them to nibble while waiting for mains ! My mate is super soft and his dish was too spicy ( HP sauce is too spicy for him ) and they brought him another milder dish out with no extra charge ! So good service in that respect

As an Indian who grew up in Mumbai, I was slightly skeptical about my very white boyfriend’s suggestion we try this place but was pleasantly surprised. For a very busy restaurant service was still pretty quick, staff was friendly and the food was authentically delicious. Dosa was authentic and the sambar delicious (although spicy for my tastes, but bearable), mattar paneer could have had more spices but was still good. Fish curry was excellent and just how my grandma used to make it.

If you want an Indian meal in the centre of York then this is the place. The restaurant is modern in style, has an abumdance of staff anda great menu. The food is not your typical Indian menu, pages and pages tochoose from. Instead maybe 6 or 7 pages, in large print which was a bonus for me. We, 2 of us, ordered a shared starter and it was on the table in lightning time. A cold dish so no preparation required. The staff were attentive and were kept busy cleaning tables which had been vacated and asking us if there was anything we needed. Not over attentive though. The main courses plus nann. Adequate sized portions with chicken which literally fell apart. Herbs and spices which one could individually taste. All in all a delightful experience. We would highly recommend this restaurant.

We came here for Valentine’s Day and we had the special menu that served a huge range of the amazing food! It was all delicious and very authentic. It’s lovely to have a South Indian restaurant here as a change from the standard Indian restaurants you can go to anywhere. The portion sizes were generous and I felt that it was priced very fairly - you definitely get what you pay for and more! The restaurant itself was clean and modern with lots of tables but it doesn’t feel crowded. Will definitely be dining here again soon!

In a snapshot few words... What a fantastic addition to Fossgate. Absolutely brilliant food and service from the team at Kalpakavadi! A party of 10,we went for our Christmas work do and we all had a fantastic time. The poppadom selection was different than the usual Indian, very crunchy and tasty! We shared a bunch of starters, all went down well the group. Traffic chicken was so succulent, we were all fighting over the chicken! And we all had different main meals ranging from salmon to mutton and all inbetween. Not your average Indian restaurant but that's what makes it great! Definitely worth a visit next time you're down fossgate. I'll be going again!

Being an Indian, I have high expectations from Indian food served. Honestly, I was amazed by the taste of food served! It is authentic and at the same time very different from other Indian restaurants. It feels like you are having something that the chef has put in effort to prepare- and not the standard tikka and butterchicken. We ordered traffic chicken(weird name :)), non veg platter, stuffed fish, parota, garlic naan, beef roast, ladiesfinger fry(veg option)and chicken gravy dish(dont remember the name- malliarachida something) All the dish were amazing and very different conpared to anything we have eaten before. Not spicy and at the same time, full of floavours. My personal recommedation is the stuffed fish, it is something i have never had before especially the gravy. Kudos to the team behind Kalapakavadi.
