Reviews of Masala Craft- Fast Casual Indian Tapas, Curry & cocktails Bar

Amazing Indian food in York. Their pav bhaji is a must try. The staff is really friendly and will do their best to accommodate special requests.
L. M.
We visited on NYE and were excited to try as I'd seen so many good reviews. On arrival we were seated and then had our order taken fairly swiftly, sadly that was the quickest service of the evening. We could see some sort of confusion at the electronic till where our server had 3 other members of staff helping her to sort something out.
We ended up waiting at least 40 mins before our drinks arrived (our popadoms arrived just 10 mins before) we eventually got our starters after an hour of being there but no cutlery or plates. I then wanted another cocktail and when that arrived was told categorically that I was not allowed another cocktail because they'd run out of cocktail mix. I then saw a few mins later that another table ordered cocktails and they got theirs - ok then.
The fun began when our mains arrived, mine and my partners came but my parents arrived without rice. They quickly asked the server for rice and she then told us there had beena mix up but they would order some rice. I get that it was a busy evening and I'm not a chef but surely rice is usually on the go in a sort of rice cooker? Needless to say my parents didn't want their dishes to get cold and so they just shared my bowl of rice and 15 mins later the rice turned up and we just turned it away. At this point we wanted out and just asked for the bill. They didn't offer us any goodwill for all the mix ups which was sad because I think we would have been a bit more forgiving.
The food was actually really nice and I will say that yes I appreciate that there may have been staff shortages but it just seemed like the servers were a bit disconnected. I noticed other tables having similar mix ups so it may have just been a bad night. Also, if someone takes your order and then isn't sure if they've forgotten something then just go and ask the customer, most reasonble people will understand.

A slightly different take on Indian food with more tapas style small dishes but also some old classics (chicken tikka masala). All the food we had was well prepared and very tasty
L. A.
Absolutely delicious, so good to have an actually spiced curry in York. All dishes had so much flavour!
A. M.
We had our NYE meal out and it was amazing, the food was really tasty and the staff were really helpful and polite.
It’s a nice relaxed atmosphere and the food came out in good time.
It’s 1 of the best Indian meals I have eaten in a long time and I’m looking forward to heading back again soon.
The Samosa chaat was banging…..
P. J.
Food was mind blowing. I didn't expected it be good like the ones in India but I was surprised how well they have prepared the food. It tasted amazing.
Best service I must say. Went to that place a little late very close to closing time so we couldn't eat at the restaurant so we opted for takeaways. They didn't have some things left with we wanted (which is good sign that their food was good) but whatever we got was amazing.
Recommendation- samosa chaat and vada pav. Also had panner Achari and Garlic Naan but best was chat 😋
A. B.
Really liked the food, ambience is nice and staff is friendly. They have got the online timelines wrong. They open @5:30 pm please take a note. Food have got good flavours, must try is Pav Bhaji! Yoghurt chart was also very good.

We had a fantastic meal for FOUR with drinks, well, cocktails anyway. We received a warm welcome upon our arrival.
We ordered cocktails on arrival, four different ones, absolutely gorgeous drinks. Our server was most helpful with great advice.
We had starters and mains, he did ask if we were ok with everything arriving when they were ready, this was ok with us as we were famished. I must admit there wasn't much delay with the starters arriving and the mains, TBH they probably all came at the same time.
UPON reflection the food was fantastic, plenty for all, maybe too much as we had to take a doggy bag with us. We loved the cocktails, much better than the ones we had in the hotel 😁.
Would deffo go again when we come to York......
H. L.
Lamb curry with rice was extraordinary, the best curry I’ve ever had before 😍😍 Also the mojito was perfect as well. I’m definitely revisiting this restaurant again, and the staffs are very friendly and kind as well 😀
M. P.
Amazing Indian street food. Perfect if you fancy something slightly different, but with options for the more typical curries (tikka masala) too. I recommend the donuts and dumpling starter, they tasted great!
e. b.
Outstanding food 😋❤👌🏼 Incredibly happy with range, price, kids menu (mild curry was a big hit with anti-curry pair!) as was mango sorbet!
Presentation excellent & taste was exceptional. Obvious the chefs know what they're doing! Had to take some home as we were full!
Thanks so much, we will be regulars!
G. P.
The food was very nice, coyldn't fault it, however the restaurant was very cold. We didn't realise that we were required to keep the same plates which wasn't helpul as we had stacked them together after the first course. Using the same plates would have been fine, had we been told at the begining.
As stated, the food was great.
P. N.
Excellent food, not too pricey. Great friendly staff. Chris, the manager, what a great asset he is. Definitely will be back when in York again.
d. c.
Lovely unexpected meal here last night after original venue just seemed to far after days journey. Staff super helpful, draught indian lager and some nice twists on the usual fare. Try the yoghurt chaat boom!! Highly recommended
J. Z.
Very nice food especially the spinach curry and snack! My Indian friends invited me to have a dinner and it's my first time to taste it. Really good and after that I invited my friends to come here three times already.
S. M. L.
Staff are absolute stars. Dinner with a show.
Decent food with some standout dishes. We are vegan and had plenty of options
A. A.
Amazing food, one of the most authentic Indian places I've been to. Do try the Tandoori prawns there you will definitely love it. I highly recommend this place for anyone.
S. P.
Really nice food, gorgeous cocktails very fast and friendly service, If I come back to York I would definitely eat there again.
R. C.
This little gem is a little walk off the main road. The service was amazing, Chris was prompt and welcoming. The food was delicious and fast. Service was impeccable from our server Chris, who made our 4yrs anniversary memorable. Definitely recommend.
I. E.
Average food but the staff were friendly enough. I personally feel it was a bit overpriced for the size of the dishes to be honest
D. M.
Found this little gem at the beginning of the year the food is amazing as is the staff they cant do enough to make shore you have the best exsperiance they can offer, the mixed grill is very good offering little bits of everything also masala dosa best iv had Masala Fries are my sons favorite including the peshwari naan he loves the railway potato cury and chicken pakoras, my faverite tho is chana dal lental curry and the Achari paneer Tika is a furm favorite of all of the family if you only try it once id advise to order yoghurt chat boom these little morsels are a tast explosion that you will never regret also the drinks are realy nice cocktails made with love and plenty of yummyness to keep you comming back again and again xx
n. s.
York is poor for curry in general but this is a rare gem. pork vindaloo is delicious and its good value if you get their bundle thingy
D.
Good food, down to earth friendly and efficient staff despite how busy they were. Everyone loved the food and drinks.
T. P. (.
Amazing food
Amazing drinks
Amazing service
I wish we lived closer to go more often!
C. C.
really good food and staff, cocktails are good. Nice backstreet restaurant. Worth a visit.
M. C.
Excellent food, friendly staff & great service. Loved the tapas & small plates to share. Will definitely go back.
A. C.
What a fab little find. The food was hot, fresh and very tasty. Can't fault the service or price.
A. B.
Wonderful food. Very authentic. Limited drinks doesn't justify the 'craft beer' claim but go for the food and chef alone.
C. C.
Beautiful!! Absolutely gorgeous, the lamb madras was absolutely Devine.. it really is a hidden gem in York.
H. S.
Great Indian street food. Really liked the railway potato curry and mint coriander chicken tikka. Friendly staff and quick but not rushed service.
K. C.
Really tasty food at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.
m. p.
Food was fantastic, decent price. Menu a little small but that's not always a bad thing.
A. G. (.
What an excellent Indian restaurant this is! We enjoyed 5 or 6 different dishes and the flavours were all amazing, distinct and all together delicious - thank you for a delightful evening :)
D. B.
Staff very attentive, the food was cooked to perfection, would definitely eat here again if in York
S. C.
Nice restaurant and bar near to the river.
Good food, good vegan selection, good service but bad beers choices. We'd assumed a more varied selection with the name and the advertisement.
Anyway excellent but just improve you craft side of your name and you've got it
P. S.
Really good food and a highlight of our holiday in York. There are tapas options as well as traditional curries plus some south Indian dishes. Our group of 8 had a range from each - all were excellent. Mint coriander chicken tikka is possibly the best Indian dish I've had.
A. M.
Very good and pretty authentic Indian street food in a vibey part of town near the river. Focus also on craft beer. On the day we visited it was still quite early (around 6pm on a saturday) so the place was a bit quiet and didn't (yet?) have the sort of vibe you'd expect in a place selling street food and beer. Instead it felt like a quiet day in an Indian restaurant. Although the politeness of the staff is always appreciated, it also needs to be fun.
K. R.
Amazing NYE curries! We had the chicken tikka masala and the lamb rogan josh and both were delicious! Washed down with a mango cider. Really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend!
L. P.
Not only the best curry in York, but one of my top 3 curry places of all time
H. F.
Loved the food here. So many different dishes, not your run of the mill ctm. Quick, responsive and friendly service. Make sure you go early or book a table.
L. L.
Very tasty food, great prices and friendly staff. I'd recommend the mango Martini for a definite sugar high!!!
L. G.
Delicious food & lovely cocktails! Great vegan selection too, would definitely recommend!!
K. B.
One of the best Indians we've been to in the UK. Mixed grill and King Prawns were really good. Great location. Staff pleasant and helpful 5/5.
R. S.
What a great find this place was!! We hadn't booked but they squeezed us in. Service was excellent but words fail me for the quality of the food!! Certainly the best Indian food I've tasted. If I could give more stars I would. 110% recommended
Y. Y. Y.
Very nice service and food! I had the curry with aubergine, very tasty and it definitely opened up my appetite.
A friend told me the owner makes all the food, and I am so impressed by this. Certainly a little surprise at a hidden corner of York, and is worth another visit
A. S. (.
We tried this restaurant last night 28/8/2020, wow!
Food was absolutely the best any of us have had at an Indian restaurant. All four of us left the place extolling the food and service we received.
We will definitely be back, well done.
N. A.
Have been a few times now. The food is always excellent and the service great too. In terms of value for money it is spot on. Last night I had Lamb Balti and the meat just fell apart and it was very tasty. The chef took the time to come and talk to us and from his experience of working all round the world shows in the quality of the food.
S. B.
Oh, what a lovely dinner after a long day of shift. Thank you masala craft for the Indian street food. The onion bhaji, blue Bombay and snowy night reminded me of home.
Indians of York if you are missing home go to masala craft. Whereas the non-Indians who want to experience and taste authentic Indian street food Masala craft is the place for you. It's worth it.... ✌👍☺️
K. P.
A stunning meal. Very lovely and fresh tasting. I had a paneer dish stuffed with raisins. The sauce was surprisingly hot but delicious. My partner had a salmon steak on a bed of mushrooms which was yum. Everything a little bit different. Best curry in a long long time!
L. D.
Indian food from Punjab/ Mumbai. Delicious food in simple surroundings, close to the river, very reasonable price. Five of us cost about £100 including 2 starters, 5 main courses, nan breads, rice and drinks.
g. d.
Spending a couple of nights on York celebrating our wedding anniversary after reading the reviews we decided to book here we weren’t disappointed absolutely beautiful food very reasonable priced would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting York 👍
C. S. H.
Simply the best Indian restaurant in the vicinity. It deserves more customers. The curry are hot and delicious, the chef adjusted each curry to the main dish it comes with. The naans are awesome. I would definitely return for more!
S. B.
Amazing curry and interesting Indian street food dishes. Good vegan options. Pork belly vindaloo and the lamb chops were incredible. Friendly staff and cool interior.
E. H.
Ate here on Christmas Eve, which we really enjoyed. Sadly not very busy, which is a sign of the times, and quite cold inside. But we enjoyed the curries and south Indian food especially.
A. H.
Came with a group of 6 after being at the theatre next door. Very friendly staff, great food and booze. Fancy dishes on the menu but they were very accommodating to anyone who had a particular dish in mind, and do all the regulars. Great spot.
C. C.
The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated, although I found there was a small hole burnt through the tablecloth on my table, which is never a good sign. The menu was tatty with torn edges and not properly bound. The menu had some interesting specials, and recommends a variety of balti dishes.
The main disappointment is that the waiting staff are less than interested and quite unpolite. The waiter seemed more interested in waving to people on the street than taking my order, and brought me a glass of water when I had asked for a jug.
Fortunately, the food was excellent. Portions are generous and the flavours are everything you would expect from an authentic Indian restaurant. Prices are on the high side, but nothing over and above what the quality of food deserved. With better service, this could have been a dinner to remember.
M. H.
Great food and a great experience. The waitress couldn't be more helpful. Quiet on a weekday evening, so fast service and a relaxed meal. Tapas style was a good choice.
M. Q.
I rarely rate on Google but this place is exceptional and well worth 5 stars. Probably the best curry I've ever had. Not praise I give lightly
M. W.
Great Indian street food, something a little bit different, masala dosa's are amazing. Good vegan selection.
A. R.
Ate there last night. Service friendly and attentive. The food was great and unlike some Indian restaurants not oily. Made purees for us to go with our starters even though not on menu. K. Prawn jalfezi was flavoursome nice kick spicewise, chicken karahi likewise. Really enjoyed smoked aubergine barhti. Really good experience.
J. C.
Fantastic Indian restaurant. True Indian not Bangladeshi or Pakistani as many are. Chef worked in Taj hotels before and you can tell with the quality of the food. It was all Excellent. Savio was also great front of house. We took his recommendations and they were all perfect. We'll definitely be back next time we're in York.
Back in York 7 months later. Back to Masala Craft before Theatre. Very handy location for pre-Theatre dinner. This place should get 10 stars. Great service (different waiter to last time, both were great) great food again (Xakuti and Chettinad my recommended mains). Chef came out to chat too. You couldn’t ask for more. Try it, you won’t be disappointed (I can only think the poor reviews are done maliciously by competitors. Shame on them).
S. J.
Superb Indian restaurant in York, down by the river. The chef creates some beautiful flavours, and the innovative menu and bright, colourful decor is good fun. The crispy poppadoms & onion bhajis to start were excellent (good pickle tray & sauces) and my pork belly vindaloo was exceptional: the correct level of spice for a true vindaloo with a lovely jaggery tang. Highly recommended.
D. C.
We booked in advance due to Covid measures.
The service and quality of the food was excellent. The whole experience was superb.
Thanks.
A. N.
The food is amazing and the cocktails are just as good. The staff are nice and genuine too. One of my favourite finds in york. 😊
J. W.
Work event here - great street food and great service
D. M.
Just been and thought it was amazing. Nice service and gorgeous food (personally best Naan bread if not curry I have ever had) if only we weren't staying for one night in York... Would definitely go to this restaurant if we ever come back to York again.
S. C.
The food was absolutely amazing, staff were friendly, the price was very competitive. If you like street food I would highly recommend
S. W.
Best Indian I've ever eaten.
S. S.
Loved the ambiance and great food. We ordered paneer tikka and it was exactly how it should be Spicy and flavoursome.
100% authentic Indian food by an Indian chef. Unlike many other so called Indian restaurants that are actually selling Bangladeshi food as Indian food.
F. M.
Tasty food and some different dishes not often found in other Indian restaurants. Interesting decor and friendly, welcoming and attentive staff. I'll definitely be back!
D. T.
Amazing food, fantastic ambience. The Sea Bass was exquisite. I have never been to an Indian restaurant quite like this one. The quality and passion of the chef for his food is plain for all to see!
J. S.
Great food, great service. Pleasant atmosphere. Good for vegetarians, try the yogurt chat bombs and railway potato curry!Would have plenty of space for groups. Will be going again.
D.
Ok if your desperate like we were for something to eat. Very mediocre meal and not a lot for what we paid. 1 curry each and 1 drink at almost £60 For 2. Considering a chinese the next night withe massive portions cost half that.
R. H.
Excellent tasty meal, would highly recommend. Service tiny bit slow, but the quality of the food made up for it!
S. J.
The King's Ransom used to be the go-to curry house for my friends and I. We've been there many times. In recent years, it does seem to have slipped a bit with decreasing portion sizes and nothing really to write home about in terms of food quality (It's good but not "amazing"). Consequently it has begun to feel a little over-priced.
Now the trouble they have is that Jinnah have opened a restaurant nearby. My friends and I now go there instead as it's just better in every way.
M. S.
What a meal. Just visited for a networking evening and I will be coming back often. I had the Pau Bhaji and Masala fish curry, absolutely beautiful and the naan bread were so light. I will be recommending this place to all my guests
A. S.
The real taste of India cooked by an Indian chef ! Unlike other so called Indian restaurants where Chefs have no idea what Indian food is.
We ordered Paneer Tikka and Daal and truly enjoyed meal. Thank you!
F. P.
It was a wonderful food experience
The best onion bahjis ever light and crispy. I had chicken tikka masala which was a good dream. Go along and experienced ot for yourself
j. W.
Best Indian food I have had in a long time. Reasonable food prices and great atmosphere.
Found drink expansive though.
A. E.
The best Indian restaurant I have ever eaten in.
Staff were very attentive, food was cooked to perfection.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.
5 star quality 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
M. B.
Salmon tikka and paneer stuffed with raisins in a spicy sauce followed by rose ice cream. Probably one of the best Indian dishes so far. Delicious. Very good service.
P. N.
I knew it was going to be a good meal when the chef came to the table and asked if we were enjoying the starter.....oh we did. But this was nothing compared to the mains and sundries which were incredibly tasty and very light. Finished it all and didn’t feel bloated. This is a real gem!!!
E. W. S. &. M.
Really tasty food. We visited on Christmas Day, the poor waiter was run off his feet, but the food was very good and we did enjoy it.
l. B.
Nice and clean, friendly staff, different food to what I am used to but still very nice would defiantly call again without question.
A. W.
Been looking for a really good Indian restaurant in York and as far as I am concerned this is it although not been to the Fishergate branch. Very welcoming, friendly and very willing and able to adapt a dish to particular needs.
S.
Really great food, both your usual options and some more unique or authentic dishes. Nice selection of local and international beers.
T. W. O. A. S.
The food was incredible, this was a real insight into Indian street food. I would recommend this place to anyone.
S. F.
Vindaloo pork belly was a hit, chicken tikka masala a big miss, (more like a Chinese curry flavour and dark in colour) poor service with regard to organising food ie spoons & large plates not put out till all food put on table, friendly but would not return
S. N.
Nicely presented, and great food. Would recommend eating here.
J. D.
Awesome food, not a typical Indian menu, but great quality, plus a nice drinks selection too.
I. B.
Glad we found this place tonight, the food was fantastic, friendly staff, will definitely be back, most enjoyable.
D. G.
Good ambience with good range of true Indian food. Pav Bhaji was lovely. Enjoyed my starter most than the main course. Friendly staff.
S. J.
Amazing indian street delicacies ...pavilion thai was very tasty ..though it was a small portion. Nice spices n chef too good.will visit again ..
K. B.

L. F.
Fantastic tasty food and good service👍
C. C.
Wow fantasy authentic cuisine well worth the visit, will be going again
C. C.
Good food at a reasonable price for a city centre eatery. Not big portion sizes but enough to satisfy.
Worth a visit.
