Ordered quite a few dishes from this place. All were amazingly delicious. The olives and sizzling shrimp were particularly my favorite. Pages of libations available to suit your fancy. Charming rooftop seating. Impeccable service! Loved it!

Well well… After looking around for some time for a 30th birthday venue (we wanted a smart casual dinner and dance vibe) Sotanos was the winning candidate. The staff were a dream, the lady who was working security on the door was an absolute legend and the most friendly person we have spoken too in ages. If anyone says all bouncers have bad reps, well they need to have a coffee with this lady! The lads upstairs tending the bar were really nice (great taste in music) as were the staff who catered the food. There was no problems coming a bit earlier to hang up balloons and lay out cakes, while at the end of the night the staff kindly wrapped up all the leftover food while everyone was having a dance downstairs so we didn’t even need to worry about that - perfect for a hangover leftover breakfast. The most excellent tapas place in York and dare I say it the north of England! Really reasonable prices, great wine selection and lovely terrace. Best of all, the service and staff are fantastic and the food comes out quickly. Definitely a return customer whenever I’m in York.

I always come out in York and I've never been in here until recently and I thought it was really good. We got some of the tapas, meat and cheese board as well as some other bits. The food was really good and we did enjoy it. My only negative would be i think for around £15 that we paid for the meat and cheese board it was a small board for the money we paid but maybe thats just me. The vibe in there was great and it will defiantly be somewhere we come back for a few drinks when we are next in York!

Great tasting food, but not really tapas. Something has been lost in translation, its almost like someone has given the chefs/ owners a recipe book but no one has actually been to Spain to eat real tapas. I would suggest halving the portions of the dishes and also the prices. If we hadn't shared we'd have been full after only a couple of plates each. It's anglocised but tasty

We went here for lunch and ate on the rooftop terrace, ambience was great with greenery and shelter from the sun. We had tapas and cocktails. Thomas was our amazing waiter/host. Really friendly and knowledgeable. He found out it was our 25th wedding anniversary and gave us a complimentary shot of rum and pineapple. Food was fairly priced and really well presented. Artisan bread and a cheese and meat board was perfect. We went here in the evening as well and we went into the basement where again the ambience was great. Really moody. Candle lit and live DJ. Not full of 20 something's. Great mix of people. Again great cocktails.

My friend and I came across this place by accident. They were very busy but offered us a table that had been booked by someone else till they arrived (40 minutes). We loved the place, but was unsure what wine we wanted, the bar tender brought us samples so we could taste and make our choice. They offered us an alternative table when the booked guests arrived and we enjoyed a lovely cocktail. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely book for our next visit as the food looked amazing. Well done boys, keep up the good work.

Little plates of gorgeousness. 9pm Friday 20 Sept. Cosy cellar restaurant, very busy. Took our name and number to call us when table was ready (told approx 30 mins and it was). Served by Jordan who was friendly and helpful. Two people shared bottle of wine and 5 plates followed by rice pudding, all delicious, the black pudding was a favourite. Reasonable prices. Would highly recommend and will return if in York again. Wish I had taken more photos, I was too busy eating 🙃

I literally cannot get enough of this place when I visit York. The food is incredible, I’ve brought numerous friends and work colleagues here over the past few months. Terrific tapas bar an authentic food and drink experience and as they claim 'with a modern twist', and a hint of Yorkshire. The menu isn't extensive but gives s good combination of Spains varied flavours including meats, fish, vegetables and cheesediscoveries and seasons inspire our menus whether it is marinated grilled fish and meats This can be combined individually or from their selection of platters and add to this a good selection of wines, beers and cocktails all adds up to a great evening.

Authentic Spanish tapas - really tasty! Unfortunately we did have to wait 45 minutes for a table but they took our name and number to call us when the table was ready. We got 6 tapas between 2 of us which was plenty; 5 probably would have done as some of the portions are quite sizable! Would definitely come back.

I visited Sotanos for the first time spontaneously with my partner (heard it was good from a friend) and we both left confident we had found one of the top restaraunt experiences in York. Honestly blown away with the whole offering. From the moody, warm candlelit atmosphere to the skillful service (thanks Connor) who had both informed recommendations and had us belly laughing throughout our visit. Oh, then the food came out... The portions were bountiful and the flavour was perfect. Can't believe how all of the varied tapas were so delicious in their own ways. Fantastic night, superb food, Connor was brilliant. Booked online thinking we would get a table down in the basement, which is the nicer environment. However, we were put upstairs. The music was extremely loud and we had to talk really loud considering the noise from other customers also trying to talk over the music. The food was nice which is why I gave them three stars but would have loved to be downstairs where it seemed a lot more romantic and calmer.

This tapas restaurant is a real hidden gem, and well worth a visit. They don't take bookings for groups smaller than 8 but we chanced it on a Wednesday evening and managed to get a table for four just as the place was getting busy. The menu covers all the classic tapas bases, but the quality of the food was certainly above the norm. The albondigas, pork with rosemary and croquetas were all particularly good The gin menu is extensive and there's a creative cocktail menu. The staff were very friendly and service was very quick. Highly recommended.

Such a cosy bar. It's a great date place to bring someone special. They have a beautiful terrace which is heated and so warm. You don't even notice you're sat outside. The wines are great and food is exquisite. It's connected to another bar downstairs, Kennedys. So when Sotano shuts you don't have to go far to a dance floor and more drinks.

Great cocktails to start - the rum & mezcal Old Fashioned, called the Mauru I think? Service was fast, dishes were of excellent quality, and the portion sizes were some of the most generous I've seen in a tapas restaurant in the UK.

Book a table well in advance, as these guys don't answer their phone so it takes a while! Recommend booking online instead. The meat and cheese platter was delicious along with the croquettes. Unfortunately service was a bit hit and miss, with our last dish taking over 30 minutes to arrive (we ended up cancelling it but it came out just after). The terrace is rather tired, and the staff could really do with washing their face masks 🤢 Recommend if you're after a light lunch with lots of choice.

Went the cocktail bar in the basement, they'll basically make any cocktail you can think of and their spirit selection is insane. Very high quality cocktail, please don't come here and order a beer. Order a negroni and enjoy!

This is a really nice bar with quite an intimate vibe. They have live music, but with it being so small it's impossible to have a conversation if it's on so only go when music is playing if you want to hear the music and nothing else!

We came here for my best friends Hen Do. Another location had unexpectedly cancelled our large group booking at late notice, however I was very glad they did in the end as Sotanos could not have been more helpful! Rachel helped me organise decorations for a booth for the group of 8 of us, including the team putting up a banner and blowing up helium balloons. The bride to be was really surprised and loved the set up! On the night the staff were super helpful with tapas and drinks orders, in particular Anna was great with the cocktails! Thank you so much to the team at Sotanos, we had a fab night!

A little quiet but it was Sunday teatime, in comparison to 1st visit which was a Saturday and busy. Extensive gin and Spanish wine menu. Well worth a visit though.

Had a lovely meal here. First time we had tried Tapas so went for the midweek special of a bottle of wine and 6 tapas. Got some help from Margo in choosing these. Got Garlic prawn, croquettes with ham, garlic mushrooms, chorizo in brandy sauce, pork and beef meatballs. All tasted fabulous. White House wine was of a good quality too. Ambience is lovely and cosy and the staff were great. Will be back again.

I usually come here for the open mic nights which are held on Tuesday and its always fun to perform. Sometimes you never know what kind of talent you might find here in York. The bar staff are nice and drinks are fairly priced and cheap. Definitely worth a visit on Tuesdays and sometimes Sundays too!

Cozy, chique and not-cheap and verging on classy little place with decent platters and a decent cocktail list. I go once every 3-4 weeks or so when I'm in York and it's either too busy or just right.. never empty. The reason this place only gets a 3 is the bar service: it's just one of those places where the bar staff are to "cool for school" .. always make you feel like they're found you a favour. And the toilets always stink. Would love to give this place a hurry rating but they're telling on a couple of the simplest things so it's a 3 from me.

The bars in York don't need to try too hard to fill their tables and sell products due to the volume of visitors. York is amazing though.

My favourite bar in York once it turns dark. All the cocktails are wonderfully unique takes on classic cocktails which you couldn't get anything even close to in the rest of York. This in addition to a quaint underground atmosphere, great staff and some fun open mic nights on Tuesdays makes this my favourite date night spot/hangout bar in York.
