Reviews of The Blue Barbakan

Really tasty home-cooked proper food! Very reasonably priced for the amount too! Me & my friend shared 2 main courses which was perfect. It felt very authentic but I am not that familiar with Polish food but it was certainly a bit different for me! Beautiful flavours & presented well. A friendly waitress & the interior & setting of the restaurant was also perfect. I would like to try some other dishes another time X ♥️

Amazing little gem hidden away in an unassuming street but this has to be the best food I have tasted in years. Absolutely blew me away. The flavours were so intense and the scallops were to die for. The pork belly was delicious and if I could have managed it, Im certain the desserts would have been delicious too!
M. M.
Super tasty traditional polish dishes and the waitress was lovely. The atmosphere is superb. The downstairs used to be a middle ages brothel and it is quite interesting eating there. Must have: courgette fritters!

Do yourself a favour and get in here to experience wholesome, homecooked, fresh & delicious dinner!
We had booked for the early bird weekday special however we unfortunately had issues with transport and arrived after 7pm so we were given the regular menus. This is our own fault but it ended up costing us about £15 difference on the bill.
The bread and dip on arrival is fresh & crisp. It is divine!
Between us we ordered the potato & cheese perogies & fish cake starters. The fish cake was delicious however the servings seemed a little unbalanced, as there was only 1 fish cake but 3 perogies. I understand the cost difference of the menu items but just noting our thoughts on it all.
For mains we ordered rabbit & goulash. Again, both were delicious and I left probably half of the potato & gravy from the goulash on the plate.
The veal options were unfortunately not available, which was what my husband would have ordered so that was disappointing.
We did order desserts, which looked delicious however they were unfortunately underwhelming, so from our experience, I would suggest 2 courses - entrée & main.
We left extremely full and really satisfied with the service and quality of food. Highly recommend!

Simply a wonderful place!
Pirogies were very good and the potato pancakes were just like my mom's when I was a kid.
Our waitress was great.
This was a great experience here in the heart of York!
Although we didn't indulge, the desserts looked great!!!
I. L.
The horrific chill outside may have worked in their favor, but as soon as we stepped inside the warmth and coziness felt homely and welcoming.
Wasn't too busy in the morning, on a Tuesday, but there's plenty space and I get the feeling service would still be tip top even if it was.
Polish French toast was a great deviation from normal French toast, but I certainly look forward to going back for a lunch menu.

Delightful place! Service and food were first class. A great place to eat even when It gets busy. It's Cosy. It's friendly. It's probably a bit of a hidden gem unless you are part of the Polish community but it won't disappoint. Worth a visit but I bet you'll end up going back again and again 👍

Incredible breakfast! Packed full of flavour (those mushrooms!!!), perfect portion size and lovely coffee to go with it. The attentive staff made us feel very welcome, and the atmosphere was calm and cosy, perfect for a freezing December day.
S. M.
Lovely interior, especially the little booths in the basement. Good service as well, and the food lived up to the setting - it was delicious. I had dumplings (pierogi) to start, with a lovely sausage filling, before a main of potato cakes (placki) with beef goulash - the crunchiness of the potato and the tenderness of the beef contrasted beautifully.
R. L.
I was advised to go to this place and have the perogies and the beef cheeks, horseradish mash and vegetables. It was a decent size portion but unfortunately unless you like brown sauce flavour to over power the entire dish as that was the sauce. The beef cheeks were really tender but that's not everything about this dish.
I open to try all new foods but nothing unique about this, the other dishes might of been better to try, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be going back again. I would advise before order you ask to try a spoon of sauce otherwise if you don't like it you're throwing £22 down the sink.

Outstanding restaurant.
Came here for an early birthday brunch with my other half. The staff are so attentive and friendly; they’ve really made our trip memorable and wonderful.
Delicious coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice; food is all beautifully homemade and you can tell love has gone into this food. The breakfast is fantastic (eaten previously) and would highly recommend the pierogi and lamb stew. I’ve never had such a delicious beetroot purée, or such fresh tasting sour cream. Portions are very generous - hearty, authentic Polish food.
Desserts are delicious, well balanced, homemade cakes. The baked cheesecake was outstanding.
The restaurant itself is cosy, homely, and very airy. Well worth the money (we ate like kings, and sensibly skipped breakfast!) Can’t wait to come back and try more :-)
A. J.
This is a really cute and unique restaurant, me and my partner went here for his birthday a while back. The food was delicious, especially his Hungarian goulash, however, the portion for pierogi was quite small in comparison. The desserts were incredible though. We had a terrible incident while we were there when the zip broke on my dress and it unzipped all the way, leaving my back completely exposed. I was completely embarrassed but the staff were so lovely and gave us safety pins so that we could fix my dress and continue our evening. They were absolute life savers!
A. V.
Plus for the puppy being allowed in the restaurant ☺️.
But
1. Scrambled eggs were soggy
2. Pancakes nothing like american ( please chef try another recipe)
3. Brioche ordered , given toast
5. The fact that I couldn't get omelette just with spinach and cheese is annoying. They said spinach has garlic inside.
Location nice, atmosphere nice
And they had free sanitary napkins for ladies in the bathroom 🔥
K. R.
I can’t accurately attest to the authenticity of the Borscht, but what I ate was delightful. The staff were friendly, but not overbearing. The atmosphere was perfect. A homely feel to which the wooden floorboards, tasteful decor and patchwork tablecloth contributed. For what it’s worth, the coffee was great too. All this at a value price. Would definitely return.
B. G.
I highly recommend Blue Barbakan. The food is extremely delicious, I've always had friendly service and it's got a lovely, unique ambience. Pictured is the Bigos Hunter's Stew, I'd also recommend the cabbage leaf stew and the pancakes. Full of flavour and with authentic, filling Polish food you can't find in many places, it's a must visit for anyone living in York.
Also, leave room for pudding as the cakes and coffees are splendid!
J. H.
It was very good. We tried alst everything on the menu. They were all good. The omelette had a crispy edge with a fluffy centre. Pancakes are fluffy and with a uncharasteristc crispy edge - very interesting interpretation of an American Hotcake.
The Duck Rumo(u?)r the French Brioche toasts - All good, although maybe they should put the Raspberry compote on the side for the French Toast.
S. C.
Wonderfully friendly, helpful staff. Nice atmosphere and the food is delicious. ALSO come here for afternoon tea and cake, the cakes look delicious! We opted for Betty's Tea Room in the afternoon, and queued. Wished we'd come here instead!
S. W.
Me and my girlfriend ate here on our first day of a 3 day trip in York. We came back again on our last night because it was so good. Top class service, brilliant food and lovely atmosphere. Wish we caught our server's name, she was wonderful. Next time we are in York, we will certainly be back!
A.
Have been here a few times and it’s always great. But today…we had THE BEST mushroom soup any of us have ever had. It was absolutely delicious. We could talk of nothing else all the way through the starter. Can’t wait to have it again.
J. L.
A very cute restaurant with warm vibes inside. The waitress was exceptional and well informed of the menu dishes as she gave us little insights into traditional foods and recommendations. The food itself was also delicious as each component worked well with each other to provide the flavours. However, the price is a little bit high for the quantity of food you get, though the location of it by the river with good customer service makes up for it. I’d recommend if anyone’s looking for a place for lunch or dinner nearby!
N. W.
Authentic, tasty, filling Polish cuisine, and we sat in the rustic basement, which actually reminded us of a place in Krakow.
Couldn't be more happy with the food, surroundings, and friendly customer service.
The pork loin, and the potato pancakes are excellent!
S. R.
Fifth visit to this restaurant. Fabulous again. Excellent Polish food and lovely friendly service. Try and leave room for one of their fantastic slices of cake ☺️
R. D.
Had the best brunch at this place. Cozy, filling, generous portions and delicious. Friendly service and away from the tourist-bustle.
S. N.
Very tasty breakfast, highly recommended the Polish Toast, too early for cake but they looked amazing, friendly staff, definitely going to be back.
J. S.
Late breakfast, hearty portions and great service. Lovely place. Had to go back for dinner and ir was even better than the breakfast. This trip to York has been a delight from a food perspective.
g. b.
It is a little pricey in my opinion but the food really is great. I would not recommend dessert there but I would highly recommend having a starter to experience as many different options as possible. I had the rabbit and beautiful and very well cooked. We would eat here again.
Our meal with 2 starters 2 mains and 1 dessert came to 70 pound with no drinks.
A. C.
Excellent service. Authentic mouth watering traditional Polish food served piping hot.
C. C.
Had a wonderful breakfast here. Host was very friendly and welcoming.
We had the duck rumor and polish toast, both of which were delicious!
Would definitely come again for breakfast/brunch, but might try the lunch or evening options next time - they sound tasty too!
P. R.
Very accommodating. Veggie options were delicious. It is expensive but good for a special night out. We had not been out to eat as a couple for a while and this was a special treat we wanted to try. We enjoyed it and portion sizes we good, as I took some Pierogi home for lunch the next day. Staff were lovely, and liked their easy going, non stuffy, friendly approach and felt looked after.
C. A.
We'd never been to a Polish restaurant & The Blue Barbakan had been suggested as our first. We were certainly not disappointed, the meal was first class & the portions of the dishes were large & more than adequate. The staff were all attentive, helpful & friendly. A lovely meal in a great atmosphere, even the Polish beer was excellent. All in all a lovely night out, extremely recommendable. We will be going back for sure.
R. N.
It was dumpling month!
A great variety for both of us: one vegetarian, one non vegetarian.
Very tasty and portions are large!
Good value for money.
T. V.
Homely, great quality and great sized portions. Enjoyed the pierogi dumplings, bigos hunters stew of pork and sausage and cabbage in a rye carrowseed bread, snitchel (not as fantastic as the others) and was surprised just how tasty the chicken skewers were. Will go back without eating anything for a day so as to try some of the cakes for pudding.
M. P.
Delicious Polish restaurant in York. One to try especially after a long day walking the city. Top highlights are the perogi and the cakes. Warm and inviting service.
P. W.
This place is absolutely delicious! I did not realise how fantastic Polish food could be! Amazing service, delicious food and a amazing beer line up
B. B.
Full English breakfasts just won't be the same after eating one at the Blue Barbakan.
The Polish-influenced English full breakfast takes on a whole new meaning.
The bread is actually brioche and every item contains more flavour than you can shake a stick at.
That one slice of tomato transcends the means of mortal tomatoes to deliver a flavour that is beyond words. And the sausage and mushrooms have added herbs to enhance their flavour.
If their breakfast is this tasty, I'm left awe-struck at what their lunch and evening menu have to deliver.
And I caught sight of their home-made cakes and tarts... I regret having left without doing justice to those cakes and tarts and actually eating them.
Definitely have to come back here when time permits!
J. T.
Very good food, nice selection of beers.
I'm told the red wine was nice too.
(Pork belly main was wonderfully tender)
L. K.
Found this place via trip advisor and I wasn’t disappointed. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Clean restaurant and toilets (toilets says a lot about a place). Service was good and fast. Food was delicious. Great portion sizes. I cannot fault this place. Just what you want for breakfast / brunch. Thank you
L. A.
If you've never tried Polish food or just want something different, this is the place to go.
Excellent food, excellent service and friendly, attentive staff.
This is a must when in York.
E. P.
The food and atmosphere at this place was so great - I got the dumplings, a huge portion of 6, all different fillings and all 10/10. The meal with two glasses of wine was very reasonable, and the staff were lovely. Would highly recommend if you are in York!
T. P.
What a charming little restaurant toward the edges of the town centre. The waitress was charming and the food was very good (we happened upon it during Polish Dumpling Week, so partook of the special). Even the Polish drinks (both beer and wine) were better than we might have expected.
T. A.
Delicious food, interesting and unique cultural decor, great range of drinks (pictured beer is Złoty Lwy, a tasty Polish beer!), amazing desserts. Super authentic (even the plates and bowls are made in Poland!) and absolutely charming. Prices are good too, around £12 for a main meal at lunch. There are no side dishes (at least on the lunch menu) but everything else is so good that it doesn't matter. Staff are super friendly too, and helped me with my terrible Polish! 😂 If you live in the city or are visiting, you need to check Blue Barbakan out, it's York's little slice of Poland. You won't regret it. Vegetarian and vegan options available.
t. s.
Super high standard of cuisine... THE BEST breakfast without a doubt. Both French toast and Polish toast were EXCELLENT, great flat white, peppermmint tea and fresh orange juice!
I'd advise booking, they're not mad on people just turning up!🙈🙈
A. B.
Amazing food, friendly staff. Definitely go for the polish breakfast dishes!
d. j.
Polish style American pancakes and a full English. Quick served, fresh food, staff friendly and chatty. Really nice loose leaf tea, in a pot with a decent pouring spout! Would visit again as the beef cheek for an evening special sounded amazing.
J. Y.
Arrived 45 mins early as we were visiting York. We still got sat down and was served. The free bread and garlic butter was amazing. Nothing fancy to it but the butter really has a sharp garlic kick which was beautiful.
I had the Rabbit Leg and for the first time having rabbit the meat and accompanying sauces were amazing. Roast potatoes were on point and the sour kraut was also amazing.
Honest we will be returning when we come back to York.
G. H.
Excellent food and atmosphere with large portions. My party all ate different things and each was freshly cooked and full of flavour. The Christmas special was very good. I'll be returning!
E. C.
Brilliant restaurant with an extensive menu. Caters for vegetarians, as well as seafood eaters. Excellent service and all dishes were delicious including the huge choice of desserts!! We'll definitely be back!!
C. R.
Definitely up there in the list of best food I've ever had. Just perfect.
A. K.
A nice hidden gem! Had the Croquette & Borscht as a starter and the Cod Loin for a main. Both were absolutely delicious and plentiful. The Pierogis are scrumptious as well. We will be back.
G.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere and everyone was really polite and professional.
R.
Excellent English breakfast. Can swap items to suit your taste. Quiet & calming atmosphere and music. Perfect place to relax and fill up on good food.
A. M.
Exceptional...probably THE BEST breakfast I've ever had...
Great flat whites
Great fresh orange juice
Amazing Polish toast with eggs and bacon
Outstanding French toast with raspberries and sour cream
J. S.
Lovely place, particularly patient with us. Great food. Great beer. Really good value for money. Would highly recommend a trip.
J. P.
Early table for us 6pm. Staff friendly and accomodating. Interesting cosy surroundings. 2 courses. Excellent value. Good Polish beer. Large portions of starter and main course.(Hunter Stew) Extremely delicious food. Thankyou team
M. P.
Dined here after a recommendation, and I would also recommend it to any one who likes good food and a relaxing setting. Staff were friendly and attentive, but not overly. We had the Croquette and Borscht soup for starter, the Croqutte was crips and had a well seasoned beef stuffing and the Borscht was also great with a natural sweetness and flavour from the beetroot. For our mains I had the Beef Cheek, this was just so tender and melting, delicious. My partner had the specials from the October dumpling festival menu, which had a good choice of flavours which you could mix and match. The side vegetable dish was a fantastic braised red cabbage and green beans. All this was accompanied by two Polish wheat beers, Pszeniczniak. Only disappointment was we could not manage to fit in one of the fantastic looking deserts. Cannot wait to go back and eat here again.
S. K.
Amazing homemade food and excellent service. Came with 5 people and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. A very nice polish restaurant and can highly recommend! Everything was delicious from starter to dessert and the waiters and waitresses were very kind and welcoming.
L. W.
Lunch menu, was small, but substantial. Fish cakes with sauerkraut were light & flavoursome. Stuffed peppers, very tasty, with a good hint of spice!
C. B.
Amazing food, great service, great choice of drinks, fabulous place. We will eat here again next time we are in York to try other things from the menu. Highly recommended.
K. L.
Fantastic food & the staff are amazing; very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, tasty and very traditional! Took me back to being in Poland 🥰 The setting is really homely and cosy and I cannot wait to go again!!!
R. C.
This restaurant has a really lovely vibe, there are 2 floors and we were downstairs (accessed by a spiral staircase) next to one of two balcony doors that open out onto the river which let in a really pleasant breeze - our waiter did say we could close them at any point if we wished!
We had the courgette fritters to start (not pictured - forgot!) which were lovely, followed by the Placek Po Węgiersku (potato pancake with beef goulash) and Pierogi (a classic!) for mains, both dishes were absolutely delicious. They're very filling, we could've gone without the starter to be honest but it was all so yummy we weren't complaining. Very reasonably priced too, a lovely meal out!
F. O.
We had a fabulous dinner at The Blue Barbakan, enjoying a vegan twist on traditional Polish dishes like golabki and pierogi. Our golabki was stuffed with buckwheat and the pierogi with lentil and tomato. We also tried the tomato and basil soup, and shared a fresh salad, livened up with delicious pickled and spiced cucumber. The staff were enchanting - welcoming and attentive - and the atmosphere relaxed and warm. Very highly recommended 🙂
M. M.
Great food.. really authentic, cooked well and great portions.
Polish beer and it's strong.
Very nice staff. We attended on a busy Saturday night and the experience was still.enjoyabke and relaxing.
A. C.
Just a nice cosy place to enjoy a great polish dinner. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and great food at a reasonable price.
B. W.
What a great place! The polish bottled beers are great, I would definitely recommend the honey lager, which was unusual but very tasty. The food and drinks are reasonably priced with everything coming in good portions. We had the king scallops and dumplings to begin with, both of which were excellent. For the mains we had the lamb shank and the pork loins. The lamb really is great for meat eaters! Unfortunately we were too full for desserts but they look incredible. Staff are also excellent and very friendly!
O. H.
Sometimes words just aren't enough to convey how great something is.
This place is AMAZING.
Proper, real food with incredible flavours. Wonderful friendly staff. Interesting wine at great prices.
We were lucky to find this place by accident on a busy Saturday evening, next time we're in York it will be the first place I book.
Seek it out, it's so worth it.
S. T.
One of my favourite places to go, always plan to have one of their delicious desserts but always stuffed, good hearty food.
M. S.
Cozy place run by friendly staff! The food is great: the portions are generous and we tried 2 polish plates and a piece of cake that tasted great.. In addition it's very cheap (we paid 20 pounds and we were so full!). Absolutely recommended
M. L.
Friendly, cosy place with a family feel and delicious food! My family was a little sceptical before we went but were amazed by the food. Definitely book because it seems to always be busy. A sign of its quality!
C. J. S.
Absolutely delicious, never had rabbit before and I didn't regret it. Scenearie was beautiful. However the toilets are one per gender meaning if you need it desperately it may be difficult. Other than that a fabulous restaurant and would revisit in a instant
D. W.
Come here for hearty meals.
Good food at reasonable prices off the beaten path. Everything we had came up to about 30 pounds. Good selection of breakfast and lunch dishes. Plenty of sandwiches and cakes too.
J. R.
Easily the best meal I had on my trip to the UK! I had the potato pancake with beef goulash lunch special, and it was absolutely delicious. Even my cappuccino was great! The customer service was also excellent. The ladies were so nice, and one lent me her phone charger when mine wouldn’t work. All around great experience!
T. C.
Lovely Polish/east European food, great cocktails and other drinks, helpful serving staff. The food packs a lot of flavour, in a good way.
The portions are large - the starters are lovely but starter plus main is a lot of food. I'd rather leave room for the excellent cakes - the poppy seed cake is fantastic
K. B.
Delicious breakfast foods, fresh squeezed OJ, and coffee. Great vibe too and lovely staff. Will def be back to try to borscht.
F. R.
Game changer !
This is the places that doesn't follow none of the high street big shot resturanres who are only good at marketing and gimmicks . This place is all about good bloody food ,simple food served by the calm staff who knows what they are doing .the food is an absolute good example of homemade cooking.
Y. L.
Revisited this restaurant after 6 years, still very good. Generous portion, quality food, nice customer service, recommended!
A. m.
Wonderful experience!🤍 It was best brekfast in York. Portion is BIG. Waitress is lovely 🤍 atmosphere is so cosy 🤍
C. B.
Amazing breakfast, good prices. Will be back for more on our next trip!
M. B.
Had a fantastic meal here today with my wife, food was fantastic and the service was excellent. We had the potato pancakes with goulash and although it was presented differently to how we had it in Poland (it was fancier looking today) it was perfect. Would definitely recommend coming here and don't forget to finish the meal off with a flavoured Polish vodka.
H. C.
Amazing food and friendly service. Highly recommended. Deserts are to die for so make sure leave room!
J. B.
We went for breakfast on the Wednesday and loved it so much we came back on the Friday again for lunch, really wanted to come for dinner but ran out of time.
On the first day my wife had the pierogi, (pan fried dumplings) with beef i think, and I had the croquette with borscht (beetroot soup, much nicer than it sounds but very rich) - both wanted to try Polish food and were really happy with what we had! When we returned on the Friday we wanted a safer palette as were travelling that day and again the food was so good! I had the american pancakes and unlike most places they are very generous with the bacon, and my wife had poached eggs. Was really reasonable as well and the waitress recognised us the 2nd time and built a little raport. Will definitely be back next time we're in York!
M. P.
Lovely food and service. We had a night away from the kids and it was wonderful to eat a meal that wasn't pizza or burgers! I recommend the pierogi to eat and if you like slightly flavoured beers, the honey beer was lovely
Z. F.
Excellent hearty home-style food, I’ve never had pierogies so big, the Golabki was excellent, an unexpected delight. The deserts looked delicious as well (baked cheesecake/Pavlova/chocolate orange cake)
E. A.
Lovely place. Really cosy. Very hardworking staff. I had the Zawijaniec - a vegetarian pancake stuffed with veg and buckwheat and topped with a load of smoked cheese. Absolutely delicious.
L. M.
Great food, I had the poached eggs on toast and for brunch and the smoked ham was delicious. Service was quick and we were all incredibly happy with our meal. Will be back!
L. H.
A great place to eat a different style of food with good service and decor.
L. L.
Amazing food. Super helpful staff, recommend trying as many dishes as possible from the starter/small plates!!
A. U.
Visited for the first time and was very impressed. We are on a budget and the menu was higher priced than what we usually go for, but it was well worth it. It was quality food made with care. The bread served whilst we awaited our meal was homemade and paired with a very fine herbed butter spread, much nicer than typical table bread and butter. I had the marinated chicken skewers which came with a very nice salad and wonderfully browned and dill seasoned potatoes. My friends each had different versions of pierogi. One had only veg options and the other meat, both loved them. If I had any complaint it would be the size of the White Russian cocktail was tiny for the price. Although it was made strong (which I prefer) and with lovely heavy cream. But overall, we had a delicious meal and can’t wait to recommend it to others and come back again!
A. F.
Fantastic food and great service. Would highly recommend and will definitely be visiting again!
C. S.
Rich and delicious food with a rustic atmosphere and friendly staff
P. G.
Delicious Polish cuisine with super friendly staff
A. M.
Wonderful. Dont miss it
J. C.
Seriously this is the best breakfast place in York and maybe in uk. Great, fresh and quality products. Dinner was as good as breakfast....nice, straightforward, no nonsense, honest food. Homely atmosphere and feel.
I. W.
I'm unfamiliar with Polish food, but I was gently guided to an excellent lunch. The food was great, but without the help of the waitress I could easily have chosen the 'wrong' meal.
K. K.
The best English breakfast I have ever had. Delicious cakes. Great atmosphere and lovely staff ❤️
J. E.
First time here for lunch ,I had the dish called bigos it was delicious and my friend had the stuffed cabbage which she said was equally as good. Will definitely call again .😋
D. G.
Amazing food and great service, highly recommended. I didn't know exactly what to expect from Polish cuisine, but I was really very pleasantly surprised by the quality, presentation and flavour of every dish. This end of town has always been my favourite, but now there's another reason to frequent it!
J. L.
Amazing place, quite pricey but worth it...Good size portions great food we had a variety of foods and love all of it....
K. P.
We went there on 15.04 Sunday we did enjoy the food but to be honest we didn't really feel we are in polish restaurant wasn't a lot of polish decoration we are polish and will be nice to feel like in home. Food was nice we other mix pierogi and Hungarian goulash and some cake on the end and polish beer 🍻 of course 😋we will go back there.
C. S.
Really nice eatery. Came for lunch and was not disappointed. Very filling, didn't need to order too much food. Would come back.
J. B.
Very nice food overall, really tasty and definitely traditional Polish. Wide selection of delicious cakes. Very friendly staff too.
D. T.
Excellent polish restaurant! Enjoyed a great breakfast and a great lunch here. Friendly staff... and wonderful desserts
J. H.
Another excellent meal in a relaxing atmosphere. Staff attentive without being intrusive. Definitely going back again.
J. A. W. C.
A real gem of a restaurant. Friendly helpful staff and amazing food! Will definitely be back
P. J.
Food is excellent, the beers stupendous, the service is attentive and friendly and the atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Young without any hint of grunge. Get your butt here asap!

My new favorite restaurant in York.
Great menu with plenty of traditional polish dishes to chose from - especially good on colder days - and the cakes are immense. In size and deliciousness. Super friendly staff. Small restaurant that makes you feel at home; Love it.
S. S.
Great polish cousin restaurant. Welcoming and friendly staff. Exceptional selection of drinks and meals. Always visiting when in York.
A. P.
Charcuterie, potato pancake, salted caramel tart. Always so very impressed with the food and very well priced. Easily one of my favourite restaurants in York.
S.
Absolutely loved it here. Very cosy inside with only 45 spaces for diners (best to book ahead for evening meals!). The staff are lovely and corrected my awful Polish with good humour. The food is amazing and as far as I can tell from my travels, authentic! I'd also reccomend the white Romanian wine, it was delicious. Excellent range of puddings too. In all, well worth the hype. Definitely visit for a wonderful Polish meal.
R. R. P.
Delicious homemade food. Very nice staff. You can't miss the Pierogi and the Poppy seed cake
C. D.
Possibly the best breakfast I've ever had. Cafe is clean, inviting, cosy and the lady who served us was very friendly and helpful. Lovely little cafe. Well worth visiting if in York
T. L.
Cut to the chase, the food is great here, the menu isn't over complicated and the staff are really friendly. If you're unsure what to order, just ask.
Though I do recommend the beef rolls
H. M.
Excellent Polish food, with vegetarian and vegan options on most dishes, and a range of gluten free dishes (cooked in the same kitchen so OK for sensitive but not very sensitive to gluten).
Lovely staff, great restaurant.
We ate downstairs next to River Foss, by the river, but it's a spiral staircase so not totally accessible.
Well lit, background music not too intrusive, will be back
A. G. “. P.
Brilliant! Superb food, awesome staff, really friendly. Great portions but honestly... save room for deserts!
T. H.
Just wow. We were blown away by this place. Amazing authentic polish food, great menu, I’m a vegetarian and there was loads of delicious options. Beer was fantastic (recommend the honey beer). Finished off the meal with some gorgeous flavoured polish vodka. The staff were so nice we absolutely loved this place. Dziekuje!
A. E.
Great food and an even better atmosphere.
Thank you for making the evening with our friends a great evening
R. M.
We walked in for breakfast on a Friday morning. The poached eggs on toast with salmon and with spinach were big portions and delicious. Children eat free, and can pick a smaller portion of anything on the main breakfast menu - our daughter chose pancakes and it was a really generous portion still, and also really tasty!
G. F.
Love this place! Been twice now. Once for lunch and once for dinner and both times it was fantastic.
The food is delicious, great selection of beers and wines, oh and the bread which they bake themselves is amazing!
I just need to go there for breakfast now to complete my review!
Highly recommend this place!
J. J.
Really nice home comfort food. We read the reviews and I know Slavic food might not be for everyone. But our experience was of a warm, filling, home cooked meal. Just lovely. Much better than the Michelin star experience we attempted the night before.
P.
We were staying literally next door to this lovely little place and decided to try out breakfast, well, that turned out to be the best decision we could have made! We came back twice, the coffee is incredible, the food is second to none. Great music and staff, a must visit if you're in York!
w. e.
A very nice place, has a great vibe. The staff were lovely and friendly.
The food portions were great and very tasty. The cakes were wonderful, so beautiful I might come back even on a day I'm up for only a cake.
Awesome stuff.
T. L.
We had a delicious weekend brunch. The staff were warm and friendly offering a great service. And the cakes look yummy too! We will definitely be back.
j. s.
Went in without a booking and were made very welcome. All 4 of us were very pleased with our choice of food - hearty portions and very tasty! Would definitely go back
A. N.
Very friendly staff . Amazing food for good price. 👍
N. S.
Wow, small place seats about 45 people. The service is very friendly. The food is out of this world, the flavours are incredible. This is a must try in York.
My only regret is I go back to Canada next week and I can't take the restaurant home with me !!
D. &. S. P.
Amazing food. So much flavour! Definitely would go back again
C. R.
Four of us visited for breakfast. Being a lover of eating out for brunch I wasn't expecting anything new... so imagine my delight when I spotted 'Duck Rumour' and Polish Toast on the menu. And it was genuinely lovely. Great atmosphere and service. Go and try it when you're in York.
E. B.
Absolutely wonderful- we went for breakfast with our little girl and the staff were amazing, they couldn’t have been more friendly or accommodating.
The food was incredible, probably best breakfast I have had, beautifully done and catered for my dairy allergy. Brilliant establishment and we will certainly return, thank you again to all the staff that catered for us having a little one with us, it was very much appreciated.
J. B.
Amazing food. Gluten Free options exceptional
D. M.
Delicious, great atmosphere, large portions! Highly recommend
M. W.
Absolutely incredible food. So well cooked with passion. Will most definitely return
R. S.
I came here for dinner on a Sunday night with my wife and a couple of friends on the recommendation of another friend.
The food was incredible. The starters we had were fantastic, with the Osciypek smoked sheeps' cheese a particular standout! The Pierogi dumplings with choice of fillings were enormous and delicious. Perfect scallops and amazing charcuterie selection.
The mains were also fantastic. The beef cheek in plum gravy special was melt-in-your-mouth and paired amazingly with the imperial porter.
Excellent Polish beer selection. Service was perfect.
Highly recommend.
E. P.
Really good first Polish food experience. Ordered the Gołąbki and totally enjoyed it :)
R. M.
Great food. As good as or better than I tasted in Poland
J. C.
Really lovely welcome, amazing food. We went for breakfast. It gets busy so book through their website before hand. The full English was great. Wanted the Duck Egg but they had just sold their last one. Would love to visit again
L. F.
I had a very good bigos there..2nd best I had in my Life; the first was cooked by my friend's mother who is Polish. The restaurant has a very friendly staff. They are always ready to help and make suggestions.
A. M. F.
Lovely warm and inviting on a cold wet day. Great food choices.
A. B.
A lovely restaurant that understands good customer service, serves delicious, authentic food at a reasonable price by staff who are friendly, knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. Small but perfectly formed,a refreshing change for the increasing numbers of ' chain' restaurants. Try something new,you won't be disappointed.
E. C. M.
Delicious food with awesome personnel! Huge variety of cakes and nicely decorated spaces!
K. R.
Fantastic breakfast, large portions with good quality produces. Would recommend to everyone you won't be disappointed
J. D.
Amazing authentic Polish food! Healthy portions and great beer! I'd definitely recommend the bigos and the perogi's.
C. D.
Just perfect. Great service and Beef Cheek was the best thing I've eaten in years.
Bonus : best none alcoholic beer too.
M. T.
Delicious polish food, we love the potato pancake with goulash.
L. S.
A very cosy restaurant that serves delicious, Eastern European comfort food. Went here for lunch one day and got these wonderful cheese and potato pierogi. The menu is definitely vegetarian friendly and the staff was more than happy to help with suggestions. The portion may seem small at first but it was more than enough. Definitely will be back.
R. B.
Not had Polish food before, but I have had other East European, so I had an inkling I would like it and I did all of it.😁
J. G.
You should reserve first! But it worth, the food is really nice the atmosphere is cosy.
C. K.
This MUST be the best breakfast in York, some of the best coffee going too!!
D. B.
The Blue Barbakan serves quintessential Polish Cuisine in a very traditional Polish setting.
The staff are polite and friendly as you'd expect from the Slavic nation and exceeded all expectations.
The food reminded me of being back at my grandmother's house, in terms of taste AND portion sizes.
I would however have enjoyed it a little more if there was more Polish music playing.
P. M.
Wonderful, authentic Polish restaurant that serves delicious food. Forget the cliches about horrible sauerkraut and boiled potatoes, this restaurant is a credit to the truly delicious food you can find in Poland. lovely sauces, great beers, large helpings. Sadly, we ordered so much that we didn't get to try the amazing deserts. We'll certainly be back again as soon as possible!
s. B.
Incredibly authentic food. Worth every penny. Lovely staff
H. R.
Absolutely wonderful service and a delightful meal. I was in the city training for a new job and wanted to go out somewhere nice to celebrate and picked The Blur Barbakan randomly. I’m so glad I did! It is not an over exaggeration to say the garlic butter served with bread changed my life. I wish I could have had one of everything on the menu, but my choice of the rabbit leg was definitely a good one. If you visit I would also recommend ordering dessert too, you won’t be disappointed! If I’m ever back in York I will be dining here again for sure.
N. S.
Really unassuming place, went in on a chance just to grab something to eat. Super quaint and the fresh orange juice was to die for, you could smell it as soon as you walked in, citrus and coffee yum! The staff for all I didn't get her name gave my dad as good as he gave which was hilarious and made the experience very enjoyable. Also! We always struggle to get good coffee outside of our home in cafes but wow! These guys make good coffee. Do not overlook this place, we will definitely be back and I'm coming for those cakes!
W. P.
Friendly staff who are always happy to help, A nice menu we had a pork belly and sauerkraut sandwich and a steak sandwich both were excellent. There's plenty of other interesting options on the menu as well.
A must try if you're visiting York ,5 stars.
A. B.
Very nice and good atmosphere.
We had lovely food and the Polish beer was very good
A. H.
Amazing food, better pierogi than we had in Poland! The courgette fritters were perfectly seasoned. Would love to go back for one of the extensive range of cakes. Good atmosphere, great location
L. M.
Great for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Never had a bad meal, lots of good options for vegetarians (they will do the pierogi without bacon and there are 3 veggie pierogi to choose from). Lunch is really good value. Best breakfast in York, we LOVED the pancakes - not your typical American pancakes (other than them being thick and fluffy) but I like that, they're more interesting and tasty
A. P.
Enjoy Michelin portions and top restaurant prices. The waiter was extra friendly to Asians, and added an extra dose of impatience. Don't go if you are not a local, for fear of not enjoying a unique attitude.
C. P.
Hadn't intended to eat here but really glad we did. Little cafe/restaurant a little off the beaten track with scrumptious food.
T. H. E.
Really cute place, staff were nice enough, the food was lovely. Me and my girlfriend are vegetarian and had dumplings and a baked pancake (looked like a large lasagna). The portions are quite big so I'm not sure what other reviewers were complaining about, it was lovely!
d. p.
Lovely food and service. Well worth a visit.
K. G.
Very relaxing atmosphere, lovely and friendly staff, reasonable prices and food to die for. Amazing place full of character. Will come back again.
A. d. F.
We live in York and love this place for the authentic Polish food (the bigos and golabki are firm favourites), very friendly service, cheerful Polish crockery, cosy atmosphere and the amazing selection of delicious cakes. It's always a great pleasure to eat there.
L. B.
Absolutely favourite place to eat in York. Amazing selection on menu, each time we visit we're blown away by the quality of the ingredients, the service and the ambience. We drove 50 miles yesterday to eat there and we weren't disappointed. As well as authentic Polish dishes, which we always chose, for the more conservative palate can find staples like fish and chips. Would never eat anywhere else in the City.
Y. M.
Small and cozy place for polish food, reasonable price for big potion of food
S. j.
...we had very tasty breakfast + dessert 😋 ...would recommend this place 👌
H. S.
Great location and good food. Warm bread with garlic butter was so good. Don’t forget to try the pierogi! Prices could be a little lower though, 22£ for a main course is a bit much.
L. O.
An absolutely top notch restaurant. I visited the restaurant at its old premises and never had any complaints, but the Blue Barbakan is even better!
My family and I visited this evening for a birthday meal and had a wonderful time. The food was delicious, reasonably priced and arrived promptly.
Our server was very kind, helpful and pleasant. She put us all at ease and was very happy to accommodate any requests we made (I.e. substituting one side dish for another, having a starter as a main course.) We will definitely be returning, as the Blue Barbakan is a delight.
M. L.
Excellent food and fine range of beers. Staff are very welcoming and friendly. Highly recommended :)
P. A.
Can't fault it. Eclectic decor, friendly service, excellent quality (and large portions!), and all at a very reasonable price. Well-deserved no 11 out of 700 restaurants in York area!
A.
Best polish food that I had in UK!!! Everything tastes fresh and awesome
A. P.
Delish. Get the Pierogi and the Golabki, a side of pickles and some sourkraut. Can't go wrong 🤤.
M. H.
Fantastic restaurant, a real gem.
The food was brilliant, freshly cooked, piping hot and tasted amazing.
Staff were friendly and welcoming.
Highly recommend it.
J. W.
This was our first time at The Blue Barbakan since we moved to York and, as far as I’m concerned, this is how all restaurants should be. Excellent service, wonderful food and beautiful surroundings. One visit simply won’t be enough as you’ll want to try everything on their menu! Very highly recommended!!
D. J.
Beautiful food, wonderful staff and if you go at lunch it's a bargain. 4 mains, 2 pints, 2 soft drinks = £60. They have tables downstairs so they might have space even if it looks full.
G. L.
Excellent food and great service. Lovely interior.
A. F.
Excellent quality Polish food, amazing cakes. The portions are quite sumptuous. Friendly staff. Nice comfy interior.
C. A.
Fantastic food!! Every dish was so delicious... and filling. Our first time at a Polish restaurant outside of Poland and it did not disappoint at all. We only wish we lived closer, as we'd be regulars.
L. S.
Went for breakfast nice decor friendly staff and an amazing duck rumor and my partner loved her American pancakes.
D. W.
Great food, friendly atmosphere and very reasonable pricing!
A must when you visit York!
K. F.
Beautiful food and lovely, friendly staff. 100% felt valued as customers. Thank you so much!!
k. m.
Generous portions and variety, had the anchovies from the daily board for £6.50 expected to only get 6 or so to have as a starter, but there was enough to not have ordered the stuffed vine leaves. Over sated but nice, will return
J. S.
The food was really nice but everything tasted sweet. My fault I guess as I had borscht to start then pork in apple cider but it tasted sweeter than I thought it should.
V. E.
This place is amazing, it felt like actually being in Poland, the staff were efficient and very friendly, and the food was just amazing.
Best scallops I've had in a while and both the Placek as well as the Bigos were absolutely delicious.
Next time we're in York, we definitely need to visit again.
J. P.
We had a family lunch here during a day trip to York. It was a lovely down to earth setting and the food was delightful. Highly recommend the beef goulash it was exceptional. The price was good. Our baby loved his meatballs which is a bonus.
J. J.
Absolutely amazing. By far my favourite meal of the week so far. Great staff and amazing food. Thank you
S.
Superb breakfast in a great venue. Staff were extremely friendly and really made us feel welcome. Polish toast was amazing and well seasoned. Definitely recommend breakfast here and can't wait to return for dinner
b. s.
Fantastic food in good sized portions. Vegetarian options were amazing. Variety of delicious cakes to enjoy with afternoon tea. Loved this restaurant.
M. R.
We had a really lovely meal here. The flavours are unusual and delicious. The coffee is excellent! Definitely to be repeated.
R. H.
Wanted to try this place for a while, and having friends visiting gave us the perfect excuse to book a table. We weren't disappointed as the food, drink, service and ambience were superb - really hearty Polish dishes served on beautiful crockery, all comforting and warming on an autumn evening!
A. C.
Arrived late for our reservation and near closing time and we were still served. The food was authentic and delicious, the staff were friendly, the decor was lovely and the drinks were absolutely a hit. Both my partner and I would highly recommend this restaurant
J. W.
Had a gorgeous lunch here today . Wanted somewhere nice to eat as visiting the city and scoured Trip Advisor first! I opted for here after reading great reviews and seeing the menu had choice of sandwiches or hot food depending on what I wanted on the day 😋. I chose the stuffed pepper and husband the stew and we can highly recommend both. Only disappointed I couldn't fit in one of the gorgeous cakes! Will definitely book here again next time and will have a cocktail then, too!
J. S.
Amazing food and great service! I'd never tried Polish food before, and was blown away. I'd highly recommend the mussels, the garlic sauce was delicious
J.
Absolute delight to dine at the Blue Barbakan. The service is friendly, food is delicious with plenty of new exciting dishes to choose from. Great plate sizes. Amazing cakes to finish off the meal. Top marks. 👍🏼
M. B.
Accidentally walked past this place last night as it's moved (and slightly changed name) since I last visited. Lovely cosy place with hearty Eastern European fare. Service was great; food was great. I had gołąbki this time and it was delicious. Highly recommended
J.
Best breakfast I ever had. No idea how I didn't have to queue out the door for it! Staff are super friendly, like welcoming you into their home. Poached eggs with hollandaise on their brioche were heavenly, rich and satisfying. French toast was so sweet and delicious. Fresh squeezed OJ and great quality coffee. You can't go wrong. I've eaten a lot of breakfasts in York, this has by far been the best. Can't wait to go back and try lunch and dinner.
I.
Greta place- very good food, very cosmopolitan! Highly recommend! Great place to enjoy not only Polish cuisine with a modern approach but also many other European dishes too- something for everyone!
S. H.
My favourite restaurant in York, it's a really special place. It has an exciting menu and everything is beautifully made and really really delicious, to the extent that you say 'wow' when food arrives every time. The croquette and borscht starter is genuinely one of the nicest things I've ever eaten. Staff are incredibly friendly and service is always with a smile.
S. M.
Very delicious food. Hearty portions. Great service. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking something slightly different to the norm but very tasty. We had the perogis and potato pancake with goulash.
B. R.
Great breakfast and lovely setting, staff were friendly. My only recommendation is the brioche didn’t really go well with the eggs Benedict (in my opinion). I tried my wife’s sour dough and that was great, would love to go back and get the eggs with the sour dough.
R.
Delicious food and cakes. The staff is very nice and everything very well presented. The dumplings are a must
P. J.
Very tasty food, generous portions in a warm atmosphere
K. J. L. S.
The food was nice. Cake is delicious.
D. R.
Will return as the food was delicious and great portions! Legendarny Smak!
A. A.
Everything that we had was delicious. Especially, pierogi. Service was amazing as well. I've changed my booking a few times (as an annoying costumer), but the lady on the phone was very nice and understanding. Our waitress was brilliant. She was very knowlegable and gave us great recommendations on the menu.
100% worth a visit!
C. R.
These folks do amazing food but I hadn't been back since turning vegan as well as needing (not by choice) gluten free food. However, a friend insisted he had seen vegan maybe gf options on the specials board so he phoned and lo and behold one of the specials was both vegan and gluten free and (after heading over) REALLY TASTY. Would love to see this vegan, gf option on the main menu so people like me would know they can get something all the time and it was SO delicious. Also, the lady serving us who I think might own the place was wonderful and really helpful advising me - thank you for a wonderful meal.
m.
Totally delicious delivery, a real treat. All the Polish classics throughly enjoyed by 3 generations! Thank you very much, we'll be having more soon either at home or in the restaurant when we can. I highly recommend.
P. F.
Had the full English and the polish toast. Both tasted excellent.
W. G.
Great for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
T. A.
Came for breakfast; had Duck Rumor and the pancakes. Food and service both excellent!
C. W.
I must say, this is probably the most tasty breakfast I have ever had.
The staff were also extremely helpful.
E. S.
Our first meal out since March and it was fabulous. The food is delicious and offers the diner something a little different to curries and tapas, and cakes to die for. The staff could not be more accommodating. We felt like we'd had a substantial, home cooked dinner cared for by friends, we would all highly recommend.
J. G.
Great menu wonderful staff and service reassuringly priced and well worth the bill! Recommend deffo
D. F.
Absolutely delicious. Unique cosy atmosphere with interesting polish comfort food. Simplistic presentation of food was made up for by the amazing taste and texture. Service overall very fast with the exception of waiting for the bill at the end, which didn't matter as we were so full and satisfied!!! Great place, would recommend.
K. S.
Lovely place very freindly food was amazing we will be back thank you
L.
Was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was and loved the vegetarian options. My first time trying polish cuisine. Will definitely come back for more.
K. S.
We dined here last week and enjoyed lovely, freshly prepared Polish inspired cuisine. Service and ambience were excellent. We would recommend The Blue Barbakan to anyone seeking food that is a bit different - it is a unique culinary experience and stands out in a city that does have a variety of high quality restaurants.
M. R.
We popped in without booking at lunchtime and were warmly received by a very pleasant waitress and shown to a nice corner table. After ordering drinks we perused the menu and decided upon one order of the Stuffed Peppers with minced pork and requested a sustiution of tomato sauce instead of cheese topping due to a dairy intollerance. The other choice was the Beef Perogi with sour cream and crispy bacon.
Whilst waiting for the food we took in the decor, which was rustic and comfortable with an eclectic mix of furnishings. The food arrived having been freshly prepared and cooked, the servings were of ample quantity and excellent quality being both flavoursome and nicely flavoured and quickly devoured.
The attentive waitress returned with the desert options and we chose to share the made-on-the-premisis Apple Merangne cake, which was also a good sized portion beautifully flavoured.
We left the Blue Barbakan promising that we would return....and we will, so we can try different options from the diverse menu to savour some more Polish delights. Give it a try!
F. A.
Impeccable everything. Outstanding Polish food, beer and service
A. R.
Good food, along with the beer, and indeed vodka to be sipped for those inclined. Only gripe is an odd one, a dish which came with red cabbage sauerkraut made with so many cloves it rendered it inedible. This is a blip, though, as most of the food has been memorably nice. The decor is a little too 'perfect'— but fear not, this is an independent place and needs supporting.
J. C. S.
In love with this place, great atmosphere, lovely service and amazing food selection. Really recommend!!
J. G.
Very good food and very good, professional staff who know their stuff. We had a very gluten intolerant person with us and the staff answered all her questions carefully and when they weren't sure of an answer they checked with the kitchen. The food is delicious and the portions are huge. The slow cooked meats were done perfectly (lamb shank was seriously delicious). The puddings are huge!
S. G.
Service a little slow but food was worth the wait
C. T. (.
Top notch English breakfast with Polish bacon and sausages.
T. M.
Nice and different food, service delightful, all good though portion size for omelette was too big.
J. C.
Great full breakfast - would be even better if you could order pierogis (equivalent to hashies) on the side rather than then being restricted to the lunch menu
M. A.
The food was excellent, the staff were lovely. I went after a weekend on the sauce and the pleasantness of the waitresses assuaged all my booze induced anxiety from the weekend. Would recommend to a friend.
A. O.
Gorgeous restaurant, more tables that it looks as a couple of floors but you need to book as busy. They serve breakfast, lunch and evening meals. Very helpful friendly staff. Delicious beef cheeks and mash
p.
Amazing experience! If You are visiting York You should definitely visit The Bleu Barbakan! Everything was spot on! The staff at restaurant is superb and will make You feel like a family member. Special thanks to Ania who found the table for us on busy Monday evening. The food is fantastic and Im not afraid to say its better than in many places in Poland (served on traditional Polish Bolesławiec Pottery). On our two day holiday in York we were here both evenings and it was a highlight of our time here! Worth any money!
Thank You again!
M. M.
Awesome food and lovely atmosphere
C. D.
Extremely tasty food and great service!
P. B.
Amazing, we will be back
A. A.
Very nice and authentic dumpling, a little on the pricey side but would still recommend this place. If you are wanting to try authentic polish cuisine, this is the place to be. Good customer service.
A. I.
Delicious and authentic cuisine without fear of adding a twist. Friendly service and well priced.
S. D.
Food was immense, different from any other restaurant I've been to in York, but well recommended. The Schnitzel was rather excellent! Service was lovely too.
C. M.
My son's took me for my birthday and the food and service was a great experience. Thanks to the lovely waitress x
H. F.
Polish food here is better than what I can get in Poland!
C. D.
Our second visit to this restaurant (the previous visit was years ago). The food quality was excellent. Really very tasty. And lovely staff. Highly recommended.
S. H.
Great meal for 3, catered for gluten free,
Lovely lamb shanks
F. M.
It took them quite a while to prepare the food but what they brought was good. I visit Poland on a regular basis and I thought the food was authentic but the portions not up to standard. A bit expensive for what it is..
P. “. Q.
Ate here a few nights ago , Loved the relaxed ambience of this restaurant and the interesting interior. The staff were attentive and vigilant without being overbearing. The food and cocktails were delightful.
A. E.
The girlfriend and I visited here in our stay in York. The interior decoration is very nice, with reminders of the old shopfront on the walls and stylish "rustic" features. Bathrooms could have been done better, but I wouldn't be surprised if they fixed that soon. The food was very nice actually, and the fresh pasta was a nice surprise. Our antipasti were also good. Wine was good, but I think it could have been more extensive. All things considered, a really nice restaurant spot and I'd definitely return.
M. K.
Had the mushroom soup and pierogi main, fabulously tasty comfort food. Cake was heavenly. Recommended!
T. G.
Good selection of traditional Eastern European food, very generous portions! Helpful and knowledgable staff and pleasant atmosphere.
M. N.
We all loved it! Great to experience how nicely polish traditional cuisine blends with British culture. Great coffee, deserts and tasty, well served food!
B. D.
The Blue Barbakan brings a refreshing taste of Poland to York. It's always nice to have restaurants serving things other than British food, and this one does not disappoint. From its cute plates and bowls from Poland to the Polish beers, it is traditional. The pierogi, borsch, and golabki are incredible. I can't wait to visit it again. It's nice for date nights or casual dining. I highly recommend it.
R. M.
Lovely home cooked type food, great portions, lovely staff, fabby ambience.
S. B.
First visit to the new restaurant and we weren't disappointed. The food is still delicious and the portions are huge (can thoroughly recommend the goulash!). All complemented by a great selection of Polish beers.
N. H.
This restaurant is superb. We were looking for something different than the standard fare and this ticked all the boxes: excellent service, excellent food, excellent drinks. Don't hesitate to book.
M. S.
They're good food and a excellent service
A. H.
Really great food and service, and very cosy too. There was limited options for vegetarians but what I did have was lovely. Cakes looked lovely too. Will be returning.
G. C.
Excellent breakfast, hidden gem with friendly welcoming service. You can tell they are passionate about the food they serve.
A. E.
Walked past this lovely place and fancied something different. The food was wonderful and the portions large, absolutely recommend 😁
M. S.
Pierogi were excellent. Everything else was excellent as well right up to realising that I has asked for a coffee after the machine had just been cleaned; without hesitation and smiles all round they made the coffee and cleaned the machine again. (I felt a little bad for not noticing.)
Excellent food, excellent service.
S. E.
I really like this restaurant. Breakfast there is particularly good, in my opinion, but all their food is excellent. Great atmosphere as well.
D. H.
Great food and friendly and pleasant staff.
Z. B.
Excellent home cooked polish food, followed by AMAZING baked cheesecake! Massive portions, even I couldn't finish the cheesecake! Friendly and attentive service too. Always great but if there are more than 2 of you I would recommend booking, it's always packed and we've been turned away once or twice.
d. d.
Excellent good value meal with wonderful friendly service
M. D.
Yestarday, my friend and I had lunch at the Blue Barbakan. It was very enjoyable. Food was absolutely fantastic! Thank You. We will be back.
I. “. P.
The staff are lovely and professional, the restaurant is cosy, clean and follow all the Covid guidelines. The food is filling, wholesome, very tasty and a good flavour of Polish food. Absolutely no faults and would definitely suggest a visit especially if you want to try a new type of food (and even if you've eaten Polish food, this is a good stop). I'll be going back soon.
M. W.
We went here on Sunday evening as a group of 5. This is one of my favourite restaurants in York. The food is fantastic, generous portions and very tasty. I recommend the pierogi (Polish dumplings). Great selection of Polish beers. Staff are friendly and welcoming.
M.
Hearty traditional but delicious Polish food in the heart of York. Great friendly staff and amazing selection of cakes.
A. D.
I couldn't rate this place more highly! The food and selection of imported Polish beers are excellent. The cream cakes are both light and rich. The staff are friendly and informal.
A lovely evening out, but book well in advance as the premises are small and the restaurant is popular!
Also, a cheeky take away sarnie to die for.
J. M.
Fabulous experience, highly recommend a visit. We will return.
B. H.
This would have been 5 stars quite easily, however, it was extremely busy and quite obviously too much for the kitchen the staff were excellent, the food was amazing, but a 40 minute wait was just a bit too long.
C. V.
We went there midweek and the place was full. Great service, great atmosphere and amazing food. We had Bigos and veal medallion. High quality, perfectly cooked, flavoursome food. I wish we lived in York just to go there often and be certain to always have a great meal.
S. S.
Characterful, friendly restaurant. Great selection of traditional polish food served in an attractive, professional way. Very reasonable prices and a delicious menu choice.
Also a great range of polish beers and freshly baked bread available. To finish, don't neglect their great range of cakes. One of the best restaurants in York which I'd recommend to anyone.
I. B.
Lovely food! Friendly, professional, efficient service is a plus. Good selection of eastern european cuisine. The full english breakfast is a must-try also. This restaurant/bistro has never failed to impress.
Y. D.
Brilliant atmosphere, amazing food and absolutely lovely staff! We went in the Summer so it was quite busy which resulted in our order being a bit delayed for around 50 minutes. They offered us a round of drinks on the house. I just love it when restaurants take responsibility and act upon it, it's not all about the free drinks or free stuff, it's about being valued as a customer. Definitely will be back many many times more!
A. K.
Amazing food, delicious drinks and desserts. Beautiful restaurant. High quality service.

Great place very friendly staff and very good food quality!!!
K. S.
Not many vegan options but the ones they had were AMAZING. Beautiful inside and worth it for just the atmosphere. Go if you're vegan and share the couple options they have between you so you can try both (Bread is also beautiful). <3
J. S.
Been going for years. Now they have moved up the road to a bigger place and its better than ever. If you love Poland and Polish food this is the place for you! Great coffee and amazing cakes too :-)
J. H.
Yummy, delicious, comfort food. Hearty.
Lovely friendly staff. Good selection of beers & drinks.
We need to go back several times to try every other dish on the menu, at least twice, then start all over again. Cheers !
J. B.
My friend and I visited last Friday the opening day. Still spot on, food delicious, lovely place ,huge downstairs. My only comment is you need to have your cakes on display like before, as I like to see what I want to choose, Also
a mirror in the ladies toilet please. Apart from that faultless, keep this up. Love it would highly recommend. Julie
D. W.
Very good quality Polish home cooking of the slightly more sophisticated type
You are sure to have a nice meal out in this atmospheric, lovingly decorated and always lively Eastern European restaurant. There will be an impressive selection of cakes on display - but let it be known that the gluten-free (!) blueberry cheesecake is the absolute bees knees and ordering any other cake is a huge mistake and disappointment, if you have ever tried the former before.
P. C.
Food is excellent. Never had a poor meal
N. H.
Fab! Amazing food. My No.1 restaurant in York!
H. C.
Don't eat lunch if you are having dinner here. Seriously large portions of hearty, tasty Polish food. They do side dishes but you won't need them. The Hunters Stew in the bread bowl was delicious as were the mixed Pierogi I had for starters. Main problem was I didn't have room to try any of the many interesting cream cakes they have for dessert. Very reasonable prices too. Worth the bit of a walk from the centre.

Amazing, charming looking restaurant close to York main attractions. Dining here feels like dining at a close friend's home. Lovely, welcoming staff and delicious, one-of-a-kind hearty meals. Generous portions, unique and authentic Polish dishes. Perfectly varied wine selection available. Home made desserts - recommend the scrumptious blueberry cheesecake.
D. Q. C.
I had a fabulous lunch here. The soup was unbelievable, so delicious, served with home-baked bread. The fish cakes were to die for. This restaurant was a chance discovery, but l will certainly be returning. Don't miss this gem of a place. The most tasty, well cooked, well presented food l've had in a long time.
F. F.
The pancakes are delicious!!
K. B.
My wife and I who are residents of York visited here yesterday on a recommendation and it didn’t disappoint. The poached eggs on spinach was quite frankly the best poached eggs I had ever tasted and I felt compelled to leave a 5 star review. The service was homely and food was outstanding- thank you.
D. J.
Probably the best eating experience we've had in years. Would take a photo of the food, but the plate is already scrubbed clean. The service was genuine the food beyond this world and the Polish Martini, absolutely stunning.
D. G.
This is one of the best restaurants in this city. Eaten here a few times and have never been disappointed. Every dish I've had has been superb. Please eat here, because it's the best Polish food I've had outside of Gdansk.
H. T.
A lovely dinner, the staff were really friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. Will be visiting again.
D. C.
Love this place! Saw reviews and photos on TripAdvisor and decided to take my 15 year old daughter for breakfast on a day out in York. We hadn't booked but they managed to fit us in, despite it being a busy Saturday morning. The restaurant is quirky and welcoming and the staff are all so friendly and helpful! Our breakfasts, the American pancakes and Full English, were unreal! My plate was completely clean! The pancakes were huge so unfortunately my daughter left some (after I'd tried to help!) which was a shame as they were so good. We'll definitely be returning!
T. L.
The food here is absolutely fantastic, really delicious with a great menu, and the beers on offer as well make it 10/10. Really nice staff and would thoroughly recommend to anyone - an excellent meal for a really good price.
T. K.
Food was excellent, I recommend the Golabki
A. H.
This is a lovely restaurant with orthentic Polish dishes. The staff we most helpful as I had not been here before nor had I tried any Polish dishes. The food was delicious and the Polish beer added to the experience.I will definitely be going again.
One I would recommend.
k. k.
We had breakfast here early one morning. Four adults and one young adult. Meals ranged from pancakes to scrambled eggs, to the omelette. We all really enjoyed our food. Kids will love the pancakes which are more like sweet fried cakes than traditional american buttermilk flapjacks. Great coffee and really good freshly squeezed orange juice. Reasonable prices and well located for a jump start on a day of exploring York. Yum!
W. B.
Brilliant breakfast and lunches. Lovely place, do not miss if visiting York.
E. R.
Delicious food and lovely staff. They accommodated a large family gathering with impeccable service and total charm. I'll certainly be visiting again - the lamb was wonderful, and the pirogis were the star of the meal. Would recommend wholeheartedly.
R. J.
Superb. Highly recommended. Great food and very good value. The staff were also very attentive. I will definitely come back here.
G. C.
We have never been to a Polish restaurant before but we will definitely be back. Delicious food and warm, welcoming staff.
N. P.
The food never disappoints here, fresh, hearty and full of flavour - good portions as well! Staff are always really friendly. Nice cozy setting. Would definitely recommend
J. H.
Our fav restaurant has now moved. We ate there on Sunday and got a table at lunchtime without booking. They have more tables now, so this is possible.
The food was super as usual and our 6 year old maxed out on the pasta meatballs.
There is a chance the cosy atmosphere of the smaller restaurant has been lost but I am sure attention to Eastern European deco over time will add to this. I do think it is important to keep the cake counter, it might still be there, but we didn’t see it.
a. J.
This was originally further up the street, they've relocated to here, more room, same great food and service. I recommend the poached egg and bacon on brioche with freshly made Hollandaise sauce.
D. B.
Fantastic food and atmosphere and very friendly staff. It's a perfect place for a quick catch up with a friend or a formal dinner with your boss.
I would definitely recommend it to anybody interested in having a great meal!
R. G.
Polish restaurant. Pleasant surroundings, friendly attentive staff and excellent food at reasonable prices. Tried borscht for the first time and loved it !
Recommended.
M. P.
Great home cooked food. Lovely staff. Recommend to anyone looking to try something different.
C. O.
I have been eating food for over 29 years but this place is something else. The food was expertly made and tasted divine. My only disappointment was being too full for desert
S. G.
The wait staff are lovely, gentle, they don't rush you, the food is excellent! My husband and I had steak salad and salmon salad, and the meat was melt in your mouth delicious! The bread was so fresh, it was more of a dessert than a side!
N. J.
Amazing authentic polish food. Absolutely delicious. Service is great. I would recommend and definitely will be back
A. M.
What a fantastic meal! Everything was delicious and fresh and the service was lovely. The portions are huge, you could easily share an omlete between two people. The hand made pierogies are some of the best I've had. We were too stuffed to eat dessert, but we will be back for coffee!!!
A. S.
The first time i went to the Barbakan for dinner, today i had breakfast there and it was delicious! The best omelette I've ever had!! Strongly recommend the cakes, they are all delicious (tried great part of those the first time I went). The staff is also very nice and the place itself is so cosy that it makes you feel at home!!
c. a. m.
We went there last night the place is nice but when it comes to the food the starters are really good though sadly the main courses are either extremely sweet or very salty.
Pierego spinach - dumpling are very very salty
Pork medalion - pork is too sweet and mashed potato salty and the side dish does not compliment the dish
Beef cheek - too sweet and again mashed potato is salty and side dish does not compliment the dish
Bigos- supposed to be a stew, lots of meats but no sauce and its salty.
The cakes are amazing...
It was an experience but sadly the mains let it down for us.
J. P.
Lovely food, best Schnitzel I've ever had, lovely dumplings as well, well worth a visit if in York but make sure you book before hand
F. L.
What a fantastic bistro. Cosy interior with fabulous food. Friendly staff gave excellent service. Loved the fact we were given a basket of on site fresh baked bread and aioli as we waited for our dumpling starters. No miserly one piece here either. Portions were large. So large in fact we had no space for one of the delicious cakes and pastries we had been eyeing up earlier.
A. A.
Very nice food, large portions, decent price. Will definitely go again soon.
S. X.
This a polish place, which for some reason also manages to make the best english-breakfast I've ever had in York.
If you get the chance to visit early in the day, do it. The waiters are also really friendly, resulting in a great atmosphere, and overall an outstanding experience.
A. M.
Delicious well prepared food. Excellent laid back atmosphere. Staff were very friendly and welcoming.
H. B. H.
Having Polish relatives and not getting to Poland as much as we would like, we were really looking forward to trying Polish cuisine again. I have to say we weren’t disappointed.
It’s quite a small place so I would definitely recommend calling to book first to avoid disappointment. I had the piaroggi (can’t remember the spelling) I have to say it wasn’t the largest of portions. This wasn’t the case for the others. The Hungarian goulash potato pancake and Bidon were more than enough. I will definitely have the goulash myself next time.
I’m not a great beer drinker, however, fruit flavoured beer was amazing!
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the service was good. Would I go again? Absolutely!
S. A.
Great food and really nice setting. Only issue was waiting for ages to get the bill. They were putting the chairs up and I still hadn't been given the bill.
M. D.
The best cooked breakfast EVER!
Outstanding value for 💰 money
Worth driving to York for.
Very clean,and friendly staff.
A. G.
Great service and excellent food! Me and my partner went there on Saturday night, quite late and with no reservation. We got the last table as the room was full. We had pierogi/dumplings and beef cheeks, both were very very tasty. Although both dishes were prepared in rather traditional way they had some unusual and interesting twists eg. there was a splash of pumpkin pure and beetroot with horseradish on the plate with dumplings. These were something I wouldn't expect but were really nice surprise. Food was served promptly and staff was attentive even though it was very busy. When I complemented the food I was even instructed how to make some of that at home! Could you think of better service?! We would also recommend Lwowek beer which has really nice, rich and deep taste. I wish I could visit more often!
A. K.
Brilliant food, couldn't stop eating and had to have dessert. The apple cake with hazelnut and meringue was divine. Service was amazing. Thank you!
E. E.
The food is delicious and portions are big (nearly too big? No complaints there). Only snag was the service was friendly but sparse, sometimes we needed to wave people over as there was no real check back. Still awarding 5 stars as that one issue is debatable. I recommend you make a reservation.
K. F.
Stopped here for breakfast which was superb!!
T. T.
Lovely cosy place that serves up some authentic Polish cuisine. The beers are great too, a bit on the strong side though.
Worth a try - thumbs up from us.
R. V.
Went in for breakfast and it was absolutely delicious. The food was great, the coffee was great and the price was entirely fair for the meal! A fantastic option if you're choosing a place to go for a nice breakfast!
I.
Nice ambience. The food was very good indeed. Service was fine when we arrived but became poor as it got busier - it took absolutely ages to get our bill.
C. K.
The food is delicious and the coffee very good. The decor makes you feel you're in a foreign country, which I like. I'd give it five stars if the men serving here were more friendly and welcoming and if it wasn't so expensive.
C.
The rabbit leg is the best dish I can remember eating in many years. Perfectly cooked.
T. B.
OMG - this place is absolutely fantastic. Food, ambience, service ALL amazing. Anna greeted us on our arrival - what an asset she is to this gem of a find in York & when we told her that we were in York for a few days celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary, she gave us a slightly better table so that we could spread out & enjoy all the food to come.
To start, I had the courgette fritters (delicious & light). My husband had the pierogi (pan fried dumplings) - he said they were "gorgeous, light & very moreish". For main course, I had the marinated loin of pork with red cabbage & horseradish mash - melt in the mouth & delicious. My hubby had the wiener schnitzel (cutlet of veal) - he said it was the best he'd ever tasted - high praise indeed. We shared a recommended bottle of white (Romanian) wine to accompany our choices & again, Anna was on hand to help us choose between two bottles as we couldn't make up our minds. How we managed to share our delicious dessert of home made cheesecake, I do not know, but manage it we did - again this was delicious & deceptively light. Anna then brought us a complimentary elderflower vodka (we'll be buying a bottle of this to take home with us)! A REALLY wonderful dining experience & we will definitely return again on our next visit in September. Shush - don't tell everyone - we'll never get in next time!!
B. C.
Delicious food every time. The meatballs are a favourite and whenever I am in York for work I try to pop in here. I can also recommend the Pierogi. They have an impressive range of Polish beers too, which I always look at longingly, wishing I wasn't working!
C. C.
Beef cheeks were amazing, staff were lovely and the hazelnut and apple cake was fab. Really enjoyed dinner there and can't wait to go back
O.
It is favourite restaurant in York at the moment, very nice people working too. I had once breakfast here and also lunch, it is very good. Will come back soon to have dinner here and I can not wait! I am also a fan of your varities of cakes.
S.
Great food however small portions. Kinda pricey aswell. Cakes are banging. Nice staff
S. B.
Extremely tasty food with good, friendly service. Great place for a 3 course meal as the starters, mains, and desserts are all amazing. Whenever I have been, one or two vegetarian options have been available. Popular with locals and with few visitors ever discovering this wonderful place.
G. H.
Lovely food and a great ambience. My 6 year old especially enjoyed the meatballs. The staff were lovely.
J. D.
The best Polish food I think I've ever tried. Book though, don't just turn up, as they fill very quickly. Our waiter wasn't the best, and dropped one of our plates down onto the table as he was distracted.
J. D.
Been to this place twice with my Polish girlfriend
Barbakan has a wide range of meals on the menu from Polish to Hungarian to British.
Food is great, the staff are polite and helpful.
My advice would be to reserve a table this place gets busy in the evenings especially Friday and Saturday.
P. G.
Tasty food, lovely service. We were both so full afterwards we couldn't fit in any of their gorgeous cakes.
You need to book well in advance. It is small and very very popular.
M. M.
Polish restaurant with excellent food. The herring salad and the fishcakes are really good. Great selection of wine and beer including craft Polish varieties. The cake and coffee offer is great too.
J. D.
Wonderful food served by friendly staff, great atmosphere, but very small restaurant. I would advise you to book a table rather than just turning up. While we were there serveral people were turned away. If you are in York, this place is well worth a visit.
K. W.
Wow!!!!
Never eaten Polish food before but on the strength of the food here I will do so again as often as possible.
Starters of grilled smoked cheese and a pancake stuffed with meat and served with beetroot Borscht soup got things going very nicely.
Main of Bigos - a meat, sausage and cabbage stew served in a loaf of bread - was a fantastic blend of flavours and textures.
The other main of mussels surpassed anything I have ever tasted of this simple dish - I confess I thought I had tasted mussels across at least three continents and was looking forward to a "safe" choice. How wrong was I? Cooked in cream, wine and garlic with what tasted like shallots and possibly some parmesan these were transformed into the best mussles I have ever tasted anywhere in the world.
The fact that they are being served on a quiet street in York make them all the more amazing.
The selection of beers is excellent and the house red, a Merlot from Romania, was really good.
Add to this excellent service and very reasonable prices I will certainly return as soon as I can.
Highly recommended!
M. L.
Cosy and very informal atmosphere and excellent simple menu. The soup and meals are freshly cooked. There was no rushing of people and the Staff are welcoming and friendly without being obsequious. There were interesting pictures on the walls.
K. H.
Duck confit was outstanding!! The Demi glaze and dumplings were superb. Hostess and waitress were very attentive even when we added extra guests throughout the meal. Serve a nice selection of Polish beers. My husband loved the honey beer. My daughter got the raspberry beer.
C. I.
Great food and really nice and hospitable staff. So far I've tried the venison medallions, the mushroon pancake, the pierogis and the cabbage pork rolls. Let's just say that at the end my plates were really clean!
F. 1.
Great selection of Polish recipes beautifully cooked
I. F.
Great English Breakfast. Good taste, good selection, great quality. Also, great bread!
D. D.
It is always fully booked here and we've wanted to go for a while. The food is good, we enjoyed our meals and an impressive display of deserts to choose from. Great service from the staff. I would have always assumed this is an evening meal restaurant but I can imagine coming for coffee and cake etc.
G. S.
Incredible. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to! Absolutely superb food and very friendly staff. Wonderful decor and a good menu choice! Will definitely visit again and again!
A. B.
Lovely food & the service was great, will definitely be visiting again to sample more of the menu
K. S.
Polish Restaurant, attentive friendly staff. Very nice food. Not too pricey. Busy place.
e. a.
Food was delicious, I had the dumplings & fish special service was OK, they could do better given social distancing measures/covering to protect staff. I understand it’s difficult times for small businesses - though maybe I’m too particular.
D. R.
I'm not especially au fait with Polish food because it is meat heavy so this cafe restaurant can be applauded for having a reasonable amount of non-meat options, but overall the food was a bit hit and miss: tasty mussels, tasteless fritters; some overly salty dishes, some odd-tasting creams... The very decent dark beer on offer helped wash it all down nicely though.
A. S.
The full english breakfast was really good. It came with eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding and toasted brioche. It was a very large breakfast! I had to give some of it to my partner! It was reasonably priced at around £8 or so.
B. T.
Best place in york for a cooked breakfast. Great service and fantastic food.
P. S.
We reserve a table here everytime we visit York and we are never disappointed. The food is delicious and rivals restaurants we have eaten at in Warsaw and Krakow. The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, and the staff are always friendly. Definitely one place I will always recommend to friends and family visiting York. :)
S. R.
Very nice lunchtime meal with friends. I had the lamb casserole pie, a special today. It did not come with any extras but was filling enough for a wet Saturday lunchtime and cost £9.25.
S. E.
Cosy & rustic feel. Good menu of Polish dishes and drinks. Food was honest, served quickly and piping hot. Ordered the pork with horseradish mash and red cabbage.
S. G. M.
Authentic and tasty food. They bake their own bread and it shows in taste. The basement is very chic and overlooks the riber. Friendly waitstaff are very helpful.
N. S.
Had breakfast here at the weekend and have to say it was incredible!! If in york you must visit. My husband had the full breakfast I had poached eggs. Both were so tasty, I really reccomend it.
C. L.
Delicious food, the dumpling starters were particularly tasty, great wine selection, fantastic service and a really nice ambience! Will definitely be back.
J. A.
Welcoming atmosphere and attentive friendly staff. A distinctive menu at a reasonable price and extremely generous portion sizes - very unique nowhere else like it in York and definitely worth a visit
S. G.
Absolutely fantastic service and food. Not cheap but worth every penny. 👏👏
M. H.
Delicious meal, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere. The Pork Belly was so delicious I couls have wanted two portions.
M. H.
The tastiest pierogi I've ever had 😍
S. M.
Lovely Polish restaurant. Well priced, great portions and fast service. I highly recommend the Pierogi 🥟
S. B.
We love it here, food and service always excellent and they're so accommodating to kids.
P. C.
Unusual food..well prepared and presented... cocktails delicious. .pudding lacking in real appeal but nicely done..just not amazing..staff reasonably friendly
K. G.
Fantastic breakfast, kids loved the pancakes! Would highly recommend :)
F. S.
Lovely polish restaurant with great atmosphere. The food is of great quality and well cooked. They have a LOT of amazing desserts on the menu as well!! Totally recommend!
M. G.
Great food. Amazingly presented and fair portions!! Staff very friendly. Too bad we discovered it on our last day in York.
S. K.
Such a special place. Incredible authentic food, and a wonderful friendly laid-back atmosphere. So good we had dinner one night and breakfast the next morning.
G. O.
The pierogies starter (beef, potato and spinach) were excellent. Stuffed garbage was as well. Service was too. What more is there to say. Oh, the white wine from Romania, never had wine from Romania before, was quite good. Also liked the fact that the gratuity was not automatically added in as seems to be the new way. They got one because they deserved one!
K. A.
Hands down, the best breakfast I've ever had! The eggs were delicious, the bacon was delicious, everything was delicious. Will definitely be back when next visiting York.
D. B.
Best place to eat in york. If you haven't eaten here you haven't lived. Breakfast will keep you going to teatime. Lovely service and some of the best food if ever eaten. Have been several times and is always excellent and have recommended it to everyone we know.
A.
An excellent cafe-come-restaurant with delicious homemade food. The waitresses were all super friendly and it's a really cosy place overall. It's not cheap but you get top quality nosh.
K. H.
Love this place. Been a number of times and will certainly return. The breakfast is the best in town, the mussels are awesome and the steak salad is just gorgeous! Definitely recommend:-)
H. M.
Great Polish food! The pierogis rival those I've had in Poland. The service was great, but the restaurant is a bit small so you may need to book ahead, especially during busy times. I just wish I'd stumbled over this amazing restaurant sooner!
M. A.
Fantastic breakfast, not only tasted delicious but looked amazing too. The service was friendly and relaxed, just perfect. Highly recommended!
N. T.
Wonderful hearty food. Friendly patient staff. Good gluten free options and understanding
P. M.
If you want a slightly different meal, a change from Indian, Chinese, Italian etc then Polish cuisine will come as a pleasant surprise. It is worth booking as the Barbakan is a small restaurant and is very popular. Recommend the Johannes beer at 6.5°. Will be on my list for our next visit to York.
b. f.
What a wonderful find! Had the most delicious breakfast this morning. The restaurant is in a gorgeous location and the service and food were delightful - highly recommended.
C. B.
If you know true traditional polish food you may be disappointed in some areas. I went for dinner and the Bigos tasted off, it could be from frozen; the meat was tasteless and dry also. It was not worth the price, being quantity and no quality. However, the starters were tasty: the peirogi and Borscht. Yet the dumblings in the soup had minimal filling. It's worth a try but don't be shocked if you find it more a hit and miss. Final point, they do serve delicious home-made bread!
N. S.
The food was delicious, great selection of drinks and the lovely waitress walked about with our baby just so we could eat our desserts together. Cannot recommend this place enough
A. B.
Had a wonderful meal here. Food, wine, and staff are all top. There's a reason this place always busy.
L. S.
Outstanding authentic polish and Eastern European food, with a good drinks selection. Great location by the river, especially if you're sat by a window downstairs.
S. M.
One of the best independent restaurants in York. Delicious food and very good, friendly service. We were a bit disappointed that the bread wasn't their own this time, but the person who makes it was on holiday, so they source it from a local baker and it was nice.
D. E.
Amazing traditional food, best chips ever do a good breakfast lunch and dinner. Service is brilliant staff are friendly and quirky decoration
G. B.
Excellent food, great staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Will be back when next in York.
A. W.
This place is amazing, great food, great staff, clean and friendly. Good portion size, it's hidden away from the main part of the centre of York on a side street but it's worth the small walk.
B. M.
Unbelievable breakfast. Delicious food and generous portions. They accommodated my girlfriend's lactose intolerance without issue. Coffee and tea were perfect. Go here.... do it.
S. L.
Jusst popped in for breakfast, brilliant food and fantastic service! Will be back
P. D.
Very nice Polish restaurant. Great authentic food and tasteful decor. Friendly, helpful staff. Definitely worth a visit. Smacznego!
K. B.
Delicious meal at a great restaurant with friendly staff. Generous portions and wonderful food, thank you.
