D. T.The new owner Steven was a breath of fresh air, welcoming, attentive and overall a genuinely nice guy. We booked a family room for 2 nights at incredibly short notice. The room was clean and was huge. Great location. 10-15 minute walk from the centre. Or bus stop out front that takes you straight in to the centre in 5 mins. See you next time we are back in York.

P. H.Great for the money paid, my friend and I were very happy with the family room whilst visiting my son at uni for the night. Great location for York City centre too. Bus into town and back Friday evening from right outside, 1 stop from centre. Last bus home 9pm. Worked for us.
m. m.The bed linen and towels were clean (though quite old), the bed was comfortable, and the single person on duty when I arrived was friendly and helpful. The room was clean in important respects, although the windows showed the mouldy edging of regular condensation. Despite a ceiling height somewhere around 3 metres, there were only a few sneaky cobwebs; and the walls were clean and presentable. I slept well.
But it isn't a plush place. When I arrived, there was no bottom sheet on the bed (swiftly supplied when I mentioned that). The tea/coffee tray had no milk and no cup (I nipped down and nabbed one from the ready-for-breakfast stack). Hot water didn't run in the time I was prepared to wait; and the bathroom light failed in the morning - as it had two bulbs, either one had already gone, or the problem went deeper than just a bulb. The corridor was warm but the radiator in the room didn't work and the one in the bathrooms had had its knobs removed so couldn't be turned on.
Oh, and breakfast STARTS at 9am, so no use to anyone in the city for work.
Will I return? I'm not sure. I have regular business in York, and this room was £60 against the Travelodge's £100, so I wouldn't rule it out. But I'd hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting a nice place to stay - it's a practical choice, not a desirable one.
A. G.We booked a family room for two adults and one child. It was a large, comfortable room with an ensuite bathroom. The beds were lovely and comfortable. The only complaints we had were the lack of heating in the bathroom (we stayed on a cold and wet October night) and the TV didn't work.

J. F. (.Just 15 minutes from York City Centre (Walking) The Heworth is a lovely olde Inn with a great bar. We visited Mon thru Fri and it was quiet up until Thurs which was a quiz night. Breakfast was great and very filling. Proper English Brekky. The staff were nice and special mention to a young lady barmaid who always had a smile and loved our doggo Rue. Room was very big with sofa and three beds. Quiet location. Its not modern but i didnt need that and for the price its very good indeed. Recommended! Thank you Heworth Inn for a great stay!
F. M.Fantastic and quaint little pub/eatery. Can be busy but always friendly, no request is too much, no problem to small. Friendly and helpful staffing are always available and the service at both the bar and the kitchens is always first class. If you fancy a quiet meal out or a few pints while you watch the football, this is the place to go!

They serve food in a 'quiet' room or you can have it in a room where you can still hear the music at a decent level so there's choices for everyone.

C. F.We drove just over 30 miles for Sunday lunch but it was worth it. My vegan dinner was delicious; the pie was very flavoursome. My two children loved their beef dinners and waffle desserts. My other half wolfed his down and we even took our pooch who the wonderful staff fussed over. Although the food was good, the staff themselves are the gems.

4. F.Wow, My old local has come back to life again in a big way. It'been about 5 years since my wife and I went to the former Shoulder of Mutton mainly because it really went to the dogs and it was as dead as a Dodo. Now named the Heworth Inn (so much a better name) with a nice refurbishment and with very savvy management and staff. We hired the function room just yesterday (for free) and for 24 diners. The food was fabulous, it was served to all 24 guests in around 10 minutes by the lovely staff. They serve a wicked pint of lager and beer and we had the most amazing day.
Don't be fooled by thinking they only cater for Vegans though. Seven of us had the Lamb Shank and it was superb. Beef, Turkey, Chicken and many other dishes were also available.
Congratulation and thank you to all concerned with turning our much loved local into a pleasant and friendly place to visit again.

M. H.Stayed for one night, check-in is at 2pm and check-out 10am. We had room 7 which is a family room even though only 2 of us, worth paying the little extra as room is big and spacious, also the room is at the rear of the property, so very quiet. Room is basic, and for what you pay its ideal. Place is going through a renovation as a note in room stating this. Guess room 7 is still waiting as is a bit dated, but serves its purpose. Free parking here is a bonus. we used here as an overnight base so we could explore York. The city centre is a 10 min walk, just turn left outside and keep walking on the same road. Would use here again for our next visit as very convenient.
I. “. P.Lovely setting and food is so good with big portions. Outside garden area is really nice, good for a quiet meal and a play area for kids and then a DJ playing music in the background too. Would recommend as a Sunday lunch place.
P. W.A very local local, where we as visitors popped in for an evening meal. We were the only diners (except for a couple who left shortly after we arrived). The menu was lovely, the food was delicious, so no problem with that, and the staff were friendly, but the swearing and very loud banter of some locals and workmen (not aimed at us, but nevertheless awkward) made us feel uncomfortable and as though we were outsiders. The TVs on the wall had televised pool games on in every direction. so my judgement would be a good place for locals and sports. Not the place if you want a quiet evening dining experience.

I. g.Having stayed Friday to Monday (3/9/21 to 6/9/21 ) myself and 2 friends the staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was to much trouble breakfast was very good the place was ideal for a stay in York you could walk into York in about 10to15 mins with the added bonus of free parking would definitely recommend

Booked weeks ago for a Saturday -only emailed 4 days prior to stay stating that there's a disco till 12.30 it says till 1pm in the pub and was very noisy till 130+. To be fair did get a round of free drinks because of it

Shower just a dribble and too cold or too hot
3) cups coupled with plates rather than saucers in room
Could all be sorted if there was the will.

M. B.Great food, huge portions and 2 for 1 on meals during the week. Amazing vegan and vegetarian menu if that's your thing. My only criticism is the selection of beer, would be great to see at least some cans or bottles of Craft Beer if none on tap.
M. H.Lovely meeting my friends and you can take your dogs to long as they are trained and clean up if any poop 💩 etc.. The service was great they even got me a cup of tea as I don't drink alcohol or much coffee etc wich was good of them. The food looks nice as I didn't want any food but my friends had something light to eat they liked what they had. Next time we're going to go for Sunday roast dinners which are supposed to be yummy 😋 x
O. A.Lovely pub, I can tell it's undergoing refurbishment and the staff were friendly and explained what was happening, but what has been done looks quite good, drinks reasonably priced. having been to the fireworks display tonight, I think it was a really good display, free hotdog too.

N. O.Very nice food and service but we we're not offered dessert . They stop service at 6 on Sunday but we ordered main meal at 5.30. They should really complete service until customers have fully finished. However, we would go again but perhaps a good 90 minutes before service ends !
L. M.Newly changed hands it's now family run. Good quality hot breakfast, comfortable clean rooms, and very friendly hosts. About a 15 minute walk into the centre. It's a popular pb downstairs, but we had no noise disturbance at all.

Manager helped us with a flat tyre after we checked out and had a broken jack in our set for a spare tyre. Quality customer service and very affordable stay for a short get away. Very short and easy walk to city center of York.
T. S.Went 2 weeks ago absolutely lovely meal cooked by Cyrus we'll be going back very soon. I forgot to take a photo of mine but had vegetarian winter stew and herby dumplings it was delicious so nice to have a lovely vegetarian selection here. Can't wait to try the spring menu!
E. T.Booked in for a Sunday for vegan roast dinner. Unfortunately minor hiccough as they had said my reservation had been for the Saturday but we were accommodated immediately. You could tell an amazing amount of effort has gone into the vegan Sunday roast option, the pie was stunning and to have vegan Yorkshire pudding available is a novelty I won't get tired of. One small critique is that the coffee on offer wasn't particularly appetising and the veg looked a little anemic but this won't stop me from returning and seeing what other vegan dishes are on offer

B. G.First visit since take over. Had self barred ourselves after a previous landlords dog bit our son. What a transformation! Not only in cleanliness and furnishings but atmosphere and customer numbers. Only had drinks whilst visiting relatives a few doors up but can't wait to try food, it smelled amazing. Sidenote - quite impressed they bagged Cyrus whom we rooted for on BHC.👏

R. F.It is located about 10 minutes from begining of the turisticly interesting part of the city of York. It is located on one the main roads of the region, however the area is very quiet. The room is of a nice size and is very clean. The bathroom is the disappointing point of the place. It looks very cheap and untidy. There was even a gross amount of hair on the sink from from previous guests. The service was good. We didn't need much, but whatever we needed was handled smoothly by the staff. We had a good breakfast there as well. The breakfast is not full of options, but have everything that you would expect.
F. F.Nicely refurbished and pleasant staff however extremely poor wine list. White selection is limited to Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay, both poor quality wines. After visiting today the choice was even worse with only Chardonnay available. For a place promoting itself on food surely having a wine list to compliment would make sense.

O.Nice hotel, our family room was unexpectedly huge - we expected the usual pull out bed from under the double, but instead got a large double and two proper singles, all spread out in a room that also included a sofa and television. The windows were huge making the room extremely bright and airy.
Carpets were a little stained and could do with a refit, but really can't knock the place for the price we paid.
Note - this is an old hotel with a lot of nooks and crannies, meaning we found two HUGE spiders in our bathroom before bed. We laughed it off, but anyone with a deathly fear might want to keep that in mind and make sure someone in your party is brave.
Breakfast was nice enough and the staff were friendly. There's a nice beer garden and the pub itself is dog friendly.
Also -- the pub is a Pokemon Go Gym.
