Definitely a highlight of our trip. The best HK tea restaurant we had in UK, very authentic Cantonese dishes hardly found in anywhere else, and is SUPER dog friendly! We had a good time (especially Domi the puppy who got loads of loves and treats & toy in there)

The best HK cha chaan tang I’ve ever had in UK. A warm family run restaurant has their own principles on serving the most authentic HK food to their customers. Upper River has now become my top priority for my next visits in York, definitely recommended to those who appreciate true HK culture and food, this place is definitely cannot be missed. We listened to staff’s recommendations and turned out to have the biggest surprises with super yummy food.

Very and only authentic Hong Kong style “cha chaan teng” in York. They are not only providing “Siu Mei” and fried noodles and rice, but also really local HK “tea set” like Ham macaroni.

Very popular with Hongkongers, and with good reason too - delicious Hong Kong dishes - made the same way they would be in Hong Kong (no alterations for local palates). Prices are fairly standard (around £10 to £15 per dish), and the customer service is fine. Due to its' popularity, expect a waiting time of around an hour for a table. My party had a stir fried beef with black bean sauce & rice (picture 5), with a bowl of beef brisket noodles (picture 6). We also had Hong Kong style milk tea (a speciality) which features sweet condensed milk 😋. A welcome feature is the bilingual menu (English & Chinese), which means everyone can try the delights on offer - not just the small Chinese speaking market !

Absolutely Hong Kong local taste. I like this very much. Super highly recommended for their crispy noodles. So much memory in Hong Kong. Before, most of the time in UK I would rather cook Hong Kong food myself but now I need to come back more, because this restaurant is so good, not the strange dishes designed for westerners in Chinatown. The food are excellent. I have ordered a dish of char siu/barbecue pork and roast duck （叉燒拼燒鴨）, a dish of pan fried king pawns crispy noodles in black bean sauce(豉椒大蝦干燒麵）and two drinks iced (lemon) tea. Chau siu and roast duck are super juicy. The crispy noodles are my favourite, hardly seen in UK. It is different from the noodles in wok-to-X. The service is good. I heard a few review said the service was not good and I think it is misunderstanding. First, I think it may be due to the different expectations from Hong Kong local food to the wok-to-X or so-called Chinese food in Chinatown. Second, I think the waitress is not rude but with limitation in English. She is not so good at English and therefore the words used may be not good enough. It requires being considerate but this is not a place to expect a inhuman Hidilao-style Chinese master-slave service. The waitress is actually very friendly to me When I speak Cantonese, she is like my old friend. I am happy and comfortable with the service. The location is convenient. It is 6 minutes to York Minster. It is absolutely a good rest place of tea time after the visit. If you have one day trip in York, it is good to have dinner here before the train to leave. It is 15 minutes walk to the station. Besides, it is accessible for wheelchairs and baby stroller. Seats are limited and better reserved before. One thing to notice is the payment CASH only (when I went there). Otherwise, you may need to go to ATM.

This restaurant is CASH ONLY. I can’t stress this enough as it’s 2021 and some might already forget the use of paper notes and coins. Milk tea was quite authentic, if you’re craving for Hong Kong style milk tea then definitely worth a visit. Food are so-so, or maybe I wasn’t ordering the right dish. Roasted duck was delicious. But Char Siu (HK style roasted pork) was overly lean I had to chew it with strengths. Rice was barely warm.

Okay, this is amazing, it was expensive but it was literally perfect Chinese food, and the problem for all Asians in the UK is that the rice it is always hard and not cooked correctly but here, it is served by Asians and definitely the best Chinese food you can find in York.

If you are looking for authentic Hong Kong food and the culture of Cha chaan teng (HK style cafe), this is the place for you. Lovely owners are willing to share their knowledge of cooking especially HK cuisine. During my short visit in York, I went to this wonderful restaurant everyday and yet I will return in the future for sure. Must try: - Singapore vermicelli which is different from other places. From the moment you walk in you know everything is fresh just from the aroma of spices that float around the restaurant. Every meal is cooked to order and with the visual menu that has your mouth watering before you sit down you know it's going to be great. The soup alone is phenominal and the mains incredible. I have been a few times just this week because it's so good and reasonably priced. I've tried a new dish each time and can't fault a single one. They have normal cutlery if you struggle with chopsticks and plenty of chilli oil if you want a bit more of a kick. Perfect for a family meal, date or just a spot of lunch. Don't think I could eat at another Chinese restaurant in York and I'm not both all. Will going again and again until I dumpling myself. This is the restaurant if you want a taste of Hong Kong style of food, you probably can't have any better Cha Chaan Teng food other than this in Yorkshire. Restaurant owner is nice if you are a polite person, (you will experience the same treatment in Hong Kong I am pretty sure!) but if you are those disrespectful guys, i recommand you to order from other Chinese takeaway. It will be more enjoyable if you are able to eat meat, but still you will be satisfied with the vegetarian food or vegan food. Ps: spent the whole year eat eating in this restaurant and never disappoint me. Ps2: food in the pic is new style of 星洲炒飯 and most probably invented by the restaurant owner himself.

I’ve been searching for proper Hong Kong food for 5 years in the UK but this is the first time ever I got impressed by how traditional the food is!! I ordered satay beef rice (沙嗲牛肉飯）and katsu pork with salad cream （吉列豬扒配沙律醬). Absolutely gorgeous! The beef is very tender with rich flavour of satay and it reminds me of home’s local cha chan teng in Hong Kong, which not many restaurants in hk can create such good flavour too. The katsu pork is very juicy as well! The restaurant owners and staff were friendly and chatted with us. I can tell he’s very dedicated into making improvements each time. Very impressed! Hope I can visit this restaurant again and try the Hong Kong style milk tea 😋😋

Staff not a great grasp of English, starter I ordered was spring rolls with a sweet chilli dip, insufficient dip, lunchtime set menu 1 piece of SPAM, FRIED EGG, A FEW SMALL LEAVES & SUPPOSEDLY FRENCH TOAST ( IT WAS "A" PIECE OF TOASTED BREAD) & a lemon tea cost £17.30 not worth it in my opinion & DEFINITELY WOULDN'T RETURN OR RECOMMEND (unless you speak Chinese).

I'm a Master student in UOY from Hong Kong and I just visited this restaurant today! The owners were very friendly and dedicated. I was absolutely fine for the wait although there were many customers (even some of them from other cities like Leeds and Sheffield.) during the peak time, representing that their dishes are perfect and full of HK style (maybe, before I ordered😊)! And that's true, I missed home so much after I had one of their dishes (雪菜牛肉飯) as the dish is full of wok hei (鑊氣) Will definitely recommend to my friends, of course, will come again! I have some more suggestions ofHK dishes: 叉燒湯瀬粉 and 港式早餐? I'm looking forward once these dishes are being put into the menu! Take care and see you again! James

Very authentic Hong Kong restaurant, taste of home! This is the true version of hk food. I can tell the chef indeed put thoughts and care to details in the dishes. Delicious, authentic Hong Kong style cuisine. A gourmet experience. The way using a wok frying ingredients, hence a combination of high temperature and short cooking time, minimize the loss of nutrients in ingredients like veggies. Definitely one of the best if not the best Hong Kong style restaurant in Leeds and York. I have been living around for 4 years and have tried out numerous Chinese restaurants but this is exceptionally remarkable. Especially the HK style milk tea, though not suitable for everyone's taste it is, in my opinion, much better than most expensive, so called 'restaurant' in Hong Kong. The only issue is the waiting time, it's okay if there's only a few tables but in busy times it could take up to 20 minutes for your food to be ready, since everything's freshly made. If you don't have the time to wait, there's still a few 'pre-made' cuisines like the burdock dish, which is excellent in taste as well. But of course if you want good food you have to pay a price. p.s. sometimes you can ask the chef how to distinguish good Hong Kong style food and he'll be willing to answer you happily during his free time!

Today, we went for a meal at Upper River restaurant. First impression was good. It brought back memories of my favourite restaurant in Hong Kong. The place offers fantastic homemade food which will tempt your hungry taste buds. We chose their house speciality dishes of Beef and Rice stick noodles and roasted pork with boiled rice. The meals came after a short wait. It was piping hot and fresh. I loved the texture of the beef which was soft and fluffy. The Chinese roasted pork was to die for. The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy and succulent. We polished up our dishes within a few minutes, fully satisfied. After that, we ordered two cups of Hong Kong styled milk tea. It was smooth and creamy. I recommend you give this a place a try. You wouldn't be disappointed.

(Translated) I took the car from Manchester to York to play, and stopped by the Sheung Shui Station, because I wanted to relive the taste of Hong Kong. A family of four called Beef Ball Rice Noodles, Beef Brisket Noodles, Fried Rice with Salted Fish and Chicken, and Curry Beef Brisket Rice. There were four drinks. Noodles, beef balls, beef brisket, fried fish, and milk tea taste the same as Hong Kong Cha Kee, satisfying those who are homesick. The waiter greeted me well and politely. Totally worth our special trip to help. I drove from Manchester to York and went to Upper River Restaurant because I wanted to have a taste of Hong Kong.
