Two of us took the five day competent crew course with instructor Owen at Hamilton Sailing out of Ipswich. We were joined by three guys on day skipper courses. The course was really good but beyond that and more importantly for me was Owen’s style not only made for an entertaining and enjoyable trip but he shared and instilled in us a passion for sailing. Thanks to Owen and the Sirius crew I’m really looking forward to our next sail.

I just completed an RYA Competent Crew course with Hamilton Sailing and totally loved it! What a brilliant introduction to sailing. Everything from the boat itself and equipment provided, the marina, food, other crew members, training, and Andy our (fantastic) instructor, were spot on. The sailing area is great for learning in - with a variety of features, different bodies of water and waterways to explore, and other traffic to gain experience navigating amongst. We even had a wide range of weather and wind conditions to sail in (thanks UK!) which helped provide a broader and more practical experience - using equipment and techniques because we actually needed to (with fewer hypothetical situations). I'd been looking forward to this experience for months and Hamilton Sailing delivered in spades - I feel totally hooked already and can't wait to get back out on the water. Thank you Mark, Andy and team. Fair winds!

Just completed my Day Skipper practical course after 5 excellent days under Owen's expert tuition. Really enjoyed it and learnt a huge amount: clear instruction; plenty of practice; and regular reviews. And all delivered knowledgably and with humour. Sirius is comfortable below deck, well fitted out and sails brilliantly. Can't wait to do my Coastal Skipper with Owen.

What a perfect introduction to sailing! I could not speak highly enough of the team at Hamilton Sailing. My partner and I went from never having stepped foot on a sailing boat to being confident and 'compitent crew' members. Mark and the team are a wealth of knowledge and deliver the information and instruction in a supportive and easy to understand way. I find it always beneficial when learning anything to have a teacher/ instructor that can take you from beginning to end (Novice - Advanced).. and Mark and the team are that.. true experts in their field. The other trainee crew members were a mixed and great group and after an initial concern from my partner that she would be the only female on board I can confirm that this was not the case. We had a great group. The only issue I had was it was over to fast and walking away from Sirius after the two weekend course was a hard thing to do... so I have already booked the next course for me (Day Skipper) and can not wait to get the sails up again. Hamilton Sailing didn't just teach me how to sail... they gave me a new passion for a lifetime! If you are considering booking just do it. You won't look back.

I did a 5 day RYA Coastal Skipper course with Hamilton Sailing in September 2020. It was an intense 5 days where we went from Ipswich down to the Blackwater and back again. I practised, learnt or revised many skills. Our group was a mix of Competent Crew, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper and this worked very well. The instructor (Owen Timms) got the sweet spot right between on the one hand, professional instruction and coaching and on the other hand, relaxed downtime fun and socialising. Cannot recommend it more highly.

Having completed the Comp Crew and Day Skipper in the space of 6 months, I can't thank Mark and Andy enough. They were excellent instructors and I learnt a lot more than just "how to sail". Their knowledge and patience was amazing. They build confidence whilst having fun and challenge your skills. My ambition was and still is to retire and see a lot of the world on our own yacht. Fantastic experience with Owen of Hamilton Sailing on the Day Skipper course out of Ipswich Marina. A really well appointed and tidy 40ft boat, a wonderful coast to learn on, and a very knowledgeable instructor. The rest of the crew were also great fun, with a shared desire to learn and swap sailing stories.

Just got back from a fantastic one-week RYA Day Skipper course with Hamilton Sailing. We booked the course for our family of 5 (2 adults / kids aged 16, 14, 10) with three of us doing Day Skipper. Owen, the instructor, was a perfect match for our family and made the whole thing fun and enjoyable while keeping everyone busy and well fed. Came away from the course feeling much more confident on the yacht and looking forward to our next sailing holiday! Also - discovered just how beautiful that part of the coast is - the rivers Orwell and Stour along with the Walton Backwaters were a great place to sail.

Just completed my RYA Day Skipper qualification with Hamilton Sailing. The location is probably perfect....lots of buoys, shipping and other vessels to test you and large variety of destination options if weather changes. The tutoring was excellent, the pace never felt like sensory overload and the sailing was just a complete blast. Sirius is a very comfortable boat to stay aboard, kitted out to a very high standard and is very responsive to sail. Mark has a very patient teaching style....more coaching than teaching and no “micromanagement”. Hamilton Sailing for both my theory and practical Day Skipper has been all I could have wished for......coming back for more!!

This is a fantastic course that I would recommend to any novice sailor. Every day was packed with intensely fun activities guaranteed to instill the revelent technical language and skills for successful crewing. The skipper gave clear instructions while leaving lots of room for developement of personal skills. In the evenings we reviewed each crew members positive points and points to work on accompanied with drinks and snacks. Great group; great laughs. I can't wait to do it again for my Practical Skipper Course!

Hamilton Sailing is a wonderful sailing school and Mark is a great teacher: he gets a perfect balance between serious learning and serious fun! I had a fantastic experience with our instructor Jon and 3 others. Two of us had not done any sailing before and when it was decided that we'd go our in a Force 6/7, you can guess that 'a little bit worried' was an understatement. We were likely the only ones out - Cowes had been cancelled on weekend due to winds. But we had a great learning experience You can't learn better than in the most testing of experience for those who are not going to be doing ocean sailing and more likely getting gently blown around the Med. Jon was a great tutor - knowing when to calmly explain and when to shock you back when it was a safety issue so that the learning stuck! Already thinking about maybe looking at the Competent Crew training with Hamilton Sailing. BTW, Jon prepared nice meals.

I went for a day sail with a group of clients and can honestly say we all had exhilarating and exciting time. None of us had ever been sailing before yet by the end of the day we had all steered the yacht as well as learning so much more about sailing. In addition to this we had time to relax, take in the scenery and the overall experience. We were all fully prepped on safety and given a hearty meal. A thoroughly enjoyable day.

I have just completed the ICC with Mark Hamilton. I couldn't have enjoyed the experience more. We had a mixed level of experience amongst the other three crew which could have clearly made it a challenge; you wouldn't have known it though, Marks instructional style is inclusive of all levels without it appearing that any differentiation in the content is happening. That meant everyone learned what they needed to whilst enjoying every second. Mark doesn't miss anything though and he has a friendly and relaxed way of getting the knowledge across at everyones learning level. We enjoyed some challenging weather but safety was always at the forefront; as well as making sure the conditions allowed for the learning to take place; which it did in spades! I learned, I enjoyed and I passed; I can't rate Hamilton Sailing School enough and I fully intend to take further training with them.
