I've been studying with China Unbound for 2 years now. I started knowing absolutely nothing, and in my last lesson we were discussing mental health and the perils of sitting in front of a computer for too long each day!!! Wow! :) I like the structure of the lessons, there's an opportunity to practice free form talking (initially talking about your week, then with specific subjects as you get more advanced) followed by the grammar points, followed by reading and understanding the text for the week. The teachers have all been great, as have my fellow students. (谢谢大家!) If you want to have fun, yet still learn Chinese then give China Unbound a go.. :)

Alfie being a BBC who wanted to improve his Cantonese and reconnect with his Chinese roots and Jo being native English wanting to learn basic Cantonese, we decided to do something about it and take up one-on-one virtual Cantonese classes during lockdown in February with Grace. We’re really glad we did as we’ve enjoyed our experience with her! Grace has all the qualities of a fantastic teacher: friendly, patient and much more. She has a great approach, tailoring lessons to our own personal objectives and managing to strike the right balance between our different levels of knowledge of Cantonese. We also appreciate her digital teaching style, using Google sheets during our Zoom classes as another visual resource to help our learning. We would highly recommend her!

I have studied with China Unbound for nearly a year with one to one tuition with Grace. I came to her as I study mandarin at university as a part of my degree but found the course content lacked a focus on speaking and listening. Since studying with Grace my speaking ability has come on in leaps and bounds, from someone who could barely string a sentence together to being able to hold nearly 20 minutes of conversation at the start of every session. Furthermore, she has been amazing at helping me fully comprehend the grammar points taught in university lessons and has provided a number of brilliant resources to supplement my learning. Grace supported me through all of my university assessment preparation and while I have now finished university I have already signed up for some of their group classes over summer to continue my studies. I would not be close to the level I am today without these sessions which have really helped increase my familiarity with the language. Grace has been absolutely wonderful and I cannot recommend her or China Unbound enough.

Grace is an amazing teacher with a lot of patience, and is very flexible in her approach and was able to cater to my specific needs, as I was a Cantonese speaker with prior knowledge of Mandarin looking to brush up my language skills. Having studied with another Mandarin school before coming to China Unbound it was important that the tutors are able to speak good English in order to be able to explain the nuances of words. The pace and class size are good (small class sizes) which means everyone has time to speak and there is an emphasis on conversation and practice. I have done a beginner's course and moved onto Intermediate 2 - the books are good, with English, Pinyin and the characters and the most important thing is, the classes are fun and do not feel like work!

For anyone looking to learn Mandarin, I would highly recommend learning with China Unbound. They offer courses for all levels of Mandarin learners from beginner to the more advanced learner. I really have enjoyed this course a lot. Our teacher was very passionate, prepared each lesson thoroughly which gave the course a structure, but also followed the dynamic of the group. Grace did not only introduce me to the beginning of the Mandarin language but also shared anecdotes about China, its history and lifestyle. Grace also gave us tips on how to enhance our pronunciation and often put us in small groups to practice. In addition to that, the atmosphere of the class was very pleasant. I have weekly 1:1 lessons with Grace these days. She is an angel 😇! for me, it’s her consistently unnerving patience, no-judge demeanour and overwhelming warm personality even when she’s got lots going on her side that triggered my confidence to elevate from seemingly nothing - then I started to refine pronunciations, fuse smaller sentences into larger ones and overall, radically improve my spoken Cantonese knowledge I picked up from childhood listening to my parents arguing. I also like how Grace captures the subjects of interest and passion I have rather than dragging me through modules. It’s all about what you value - that’s the beauty. We use our lessons to have day to day conversations about what’s been going on. In short, she’s enabled me to open the flood gates in terms of talking Cantonese and now I can have conversations at another level with my older family members. That’s priceless.

Excellent teaching curriculum and high quality professional teachers. I have weekly private lessons and they are flexible in working around my busy schedule. Pre-Covid, they were able to meet me at my office in central London. VC learning during/post covid was just as effective. I've been with them since early 2019. My Mandarin and confidence level of the language has significantly improved across all aspects: reading, writing and conversational. Cannot recommend them highly enough!

Went to Grace to brush up on my parents' language, mainly reading and vocabulary. I found Grace to be a patient and enjoyable teacher. The lessons sometimes felt like friends meeting up for a chat but in a foreign language. That's not to say the lessons were not structured or lackluster. Multiple reading material was provided found both in teaching books and online which enabled me to improve not only my understanding of the language but also of my parents' country and culture. It was and still is a great experience.

Fantastic Mandarin lessons with China Unbound. Grace Zhao makes an incredibly difficult language easier to access and it was possible to have a real conversation in just one day. Unlike other courses I've attended, the emphasis was on sounds rather than symbols so it was possible to pronounce anything in Pinyin, the Romanised form, very quickly. The handouts were a great memory jogger. Highly recommended.

I enrolled on a beginner course after an initial meeting with Grace. My tutor 'Sweta' was absolutely brilliant. She was patient with us and had sessions planned and organised in a fashion that met our needs. I thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from the speaking sessions where I was able to become more confident in using Mandarin. Now that I have finished my twelve weeks, I actually miss going to class but unfortunately have other commitments at the moment. Would definitely consider doing the intermediate/advance courses.
