Reviews of Mathouse BJJ

I trained at Mathouse for a few months after relocating to Reading. It's a really great club and Dom should be very proud of what he's achieved both in terms of a high quality training environment and club ethos. The space is generous, spotlessly clean and well set up for BJJ and another grappling sports. Dom's instruction is clear and insightful. The real standout for me however, is that Dom is far more involved with his students than many other gyms I've trained. I think this helps foster a very welcoming and non-cliquey atmosphere. And also he's more aware of where you are on your BJJ journey. Get down there!

Started here about 6 weeks ago now, doing 3x a week consistently. Just wanted to say this place is amazing, from the teaching, to the people. Every session I turn up and feel welcome. Also, the difference between my first session and now fitness wise I’m amazing. I feel fitter and feel like I’m improving every session. As a 19 year old student I highly recommend Mathouse to anyone, any shape or size.

Mathouse is a truly awesome place to train at and fall in love with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I cannot recommend this place more highly enough. Dom and Zach are such skilled instructors, and break down techniques in simple way.
They're passionate about seeing people of all abilities grow, and it's so evident in the atmosphere that they've built at Mathouse. The facilities are spotless, and the training partners make it such a welcoming place for all abilities. Also, the kids classes are well structured and fun.
It's a great place to learn, and I've always felt comfortable and taken care of in Mathouse. If you want to try out BJJ, find a family friendly place or push yourself in your training, Mathouse is the place to be!

Trained in multiple clubs in my life so have experienced the good and the bad. This is certainly a quality club. Very professional, quality training, safe and clean, all with a friendly and respectful atmosphere.
Great for newcomers due to its dedicated new starter sessions and there also a large experienced player base.
Sessions are plentiful and start on time.

I’ve been training at the new Mathouse academy since September of last year and couldn’t recommend it more highly… for those looking to get into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you will:
- Learn a new martial art that you may even compete in one day!
- Boost your self esteem and self discipline.
- Increase your fitness levels.
- All whilst meeting a great set of people who are very welcoming and working towards getting better alongside you.
I wouldn’t train anywhere else in the Reading area (as my base Academy) and Dom has created a very special environment, the academy is in pristine condition and everything is set up perfectly.
Furthermore, Dom and Zach are excellent instructors and are able to break down the key concepts and techniques which are fundamental to BJJ into a very easy to understand format and system for beginners - all whilst making the sessions very interactive and fun - and are always there if you need help.
If you’re interested in joining - I’d recommend joining a beginners course or free trial lesson. Follow the links on the website!
See you on the Mats! Oss! 🥋

I started at Mathouse in January to find a new outlet after competing in Boxing & Muay Thai, and I honestly can’t praise the coaching at Mathouse highly enough. When I walked into Mathouse I immediately felt the sense of discipline and respect in the room. I quickly found a love and connection with the sport of BJJ and the coaching staff have taught me an unbelievable amount in the past 5 months.
Last year my ex-fiancé went through chemotherapy & radiotherapy treatment during the pandemic, and thankfully survived her cancer journey but our relationship didn’t. Mathouse has become not only a physical outlet for me, but BJJ has become my therapy; it’s a chance for me to escape and connect with like-minded people whilst developing one of the realest & deepest martial arts in the world. It’s become part of my routine that I will always sustain until I am too old or broken to continue anymore.
Thank you to Dom & Zach for teaching me week upon week & helping me to develop not just as a martial artist, but as a person too. After last year I feel I have found my sense of belonging again and are excited to keep learning such incredible skills.
Whether you’ve never stepped on the mats like me in January, or you’ve trained in Jiu Jitsu before, get yourself down and try it out. You won’t be disappointed.

Amazing academy, world class coaching and the best training partners you could ask for!
The culture at this club is second to none, if you are keen on trying BJJ look no further than Mathouse it will change your life!

Dom has built a truly incredible place to train. A awesome venue with an incredibly welcoming group of regulars. Dom's coaching style is perfect for all levels, providing the right level of detail at each stage of your BJJ development and always encouraging questions. It doesn't matter if you just want a fun hobby to maintain fitness or you want to get into competitive BJJ, and anything in between, this is the right place to train.
I just spotted a rogue 1 star review almost the sea of 5s. Having trained hundreds of times over many years I've never attended a single session that reflects the atmosphere described. The whole club is built up of welcoming and helpful people. I can only imagine that the review was left in error against the wrong venue?

My son has done Brazilian jiu-jitsu here for over a year and he absolutely loves it. The coaches are really good and friendly and there is a place for you yo sit and watch. Can't recommend it enough.

It's a great academy.
The instruction is great, the facilities are the best i've been to, and the other students are really welcoming. The broad timetable offers plenty of opportunity to train at different times.

Fantastic place with top quality teaching and incredible facilities. No matter what level you are at, Mathouse is the best place to learn BJJ.

My 10 year old Son attends kids classes and enjoys each one immensely. Dominik is a great teacher who obviously lives his subject. His lessons are focused, fun and impart a lot of technique for the kids to absorb. All in all a great environment to learn.
Update : My son is now almost 14 and has been joined in class by his brother and sister. Dominik and his exemplary team of Instructors continue to deliver a great environment for the kids to grow. A great place to build a little confidence, discipline and technique.

I have trained at various martial arts clubs in Reading since 90s. This is the highest quality of establishment I have seen here.
The instructional quality is brilliant, a wide selection of classes for all levels, the venue has to be seen! You can instantly see the effort and quality that has gone into making this club.
All the students are welcoming and friendly.
If you want to get into martial arts then this is the place to start, or of you're doing other martial arts in the Berkshire area then you need to come and check this place out.

Mathouse is an amazing place to practice the art of BJJ (whatever your goal may be) and meet some great people! Dom is an excellent teacher and has built a truly awesome environment. Can't recommend his academy highly enough.
D. S.
best BJJ I've had the pleasure to train at. Head coach Dom is a great instructor and the facility is first class. You also couldn't wish to meet a nicer bunch of training partners. You'll learn a lot and improve your skills quickly!

First class instructor, amazing facility and atmosphere.
If you are thinking about starting BJJ, Mathouse is the perfect spot. Whether you do the 4 week beginner's course or jump straight into classes you will find the academy very welcoming.
Good range of classes: gi, no-gi, judo, yoga, kids, beginner and advanced lessons. Easy parking, clean changing rooms, run professionally and regular seminars from some of the world's best BJJ athletes. Dominik is an excellent teacher and puts everything into making Mathouse a great place to train.

Fantastic club. Convenient location in Reading, superb instruction and lots of options. Give a trial class a go!
Dom is a quality instructor with a wealth of experience at the highest level in the sport and his focus on the little details makes learning from him so valuable. Whether you're a beginner like me or a veteran, you're sure to learn something. I'm also greatly enjoying Zach's teaching style in some of the fundamentals classes and have taken away some key points every class!
Everyone at the club is extremely welcoming and friendly. I was tentative about attending mixed level classes but the positive environment created by all of the training partners makes it a great place to learn.
There's an array of classes and times depending on your preference/schedules; supplementary classes like judo, yoga and wrestling; regular guest seminars; and kids/junior classes which look super fun!

Amazing place to train, coaches are super helpful and knowledgeable and the facilities are top notch! Best place in Reading for sure.

Mathouse is a welcoming academy with a wide range of experience in the team. I’ve been learning BJJ for a few months now and have no doubts that this was a great place to come and start martial arts. Dominik is a fantastic teacher. In the short time I’ve been practicing he has not only delivered his own experience but also brought in greats such as Roger Gracie and Mauricio Gomes to run seminars.

Highly recommended, amazing head coach, it is a shame that it was too far for me to drive after work as I'd still be training there. I have trained at a few martial arts academies and I have to say this is one of the best, the respect from everyone in the room was off the charts. If you are in the area and want to learn BJJ this is a must.
k. g.
One of the best Martial Arts clubs in the area. Dominik is a great teacher with an in-depth knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a legit black belt. The classes are filled with students that will push you to be the best, but also respect your abilities and ensure you don't get injured.
Join up today and start your journey - you wont regret the decision!

When I was looking for a martial arts club my goal was to stay fit and learn self defense. But here, I have found much more than this.
The team is excellent and we learn from one another by helping each other to become better in what we do. Dominik is an amazing instructor, who shares his passion and his techniques in a way that meets the individual’s hunger for learning but also improving the acquired knowledge whilst working simultaneously with people who are at different levels.
If you're looking for something new or simply a new pace to train BJJ then I would highly recommend Mathouse

I have been training at MatHouse for just under a year and a half. I have trained at other academies and MatHouse is by far the best value for money. It provides a welcoming and nurturing atmosphere. It's NOT a gym where the new, or less experienced members are thrown about and choked needlessly! (Although we can if you want us to!) You get excellent tuition from our instructor Dominik. Whether teaching an advanced or basic technique, Dominik's enthusiasm never fails. He truly cares about the progression of every student. You dont need to be athletic and fit to start BJJ. There are all shapes, ages and abilities at MatHouse. However you will definitely get fit and athletic once you have started! Start off with the beginners course, get the basics, and then come and train regularly. You will not regret it!

As someone just starting my BJJ journey, couldn't have asked for a better reception. The teaching is great with real focus on technique, and the culture in the academy is one of mutual support and growth. You immediately feel welcomed, and everyone keeps giving you tips on how to improve and things to focus on which really helps development. Even leaving BJJ aside for a moment, it's a great academy full of great people learning and improving together. Would definitely recommend

Mathouse is exactly what you'd expect an extension of the Roger Gracie Academy to be. Awesome! Dominic is a fantastic coach and a fantastic person, meaning not only are you going to learn Jiu-Jitsu from a legit competitive black belt, but you're gonna have a great time doing it! The team and family that he has created are also what makes this the best place to learn Jiu-Jitsu in the area by far. The guys are very skilled and very friendly so you'll be able to learn and push yourself in a very safe environment as well as meeting some cool new friends. Whether you want to compete, learn a new skill or just have some fun Mathouse is the place for you. You belong here!

Whether you are a complete novice and looking to start a new hobby, or a seasoned veteran, Dominik (the head instructor, and a black belt under the G.O.A.T Roger Gracie) will be able to help you improve your game.
I have had the pleasure of training at Mathouse since it opened, and have thoroughly enjoyed every session at this welcoming and friendly club. Come and join us!

Mathouse is amazing place to train where not only you learn about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, but you become part of a family!
Everyone is super welcoming, friendly, and train hard. The pace is set by our Black belt instructor Dominik who truly loves this sport and shows it through his teaching styles.
I have trained jiu-jitsu in Brazil and US, and now in the UK at Mathouse I have found a place that keeps with the tradition of the Brazilian roots.
I HIGHLY recommend attending one of the beginner courses, an intro class, or any of the multiple seminars that are available through Mathouse (even a seminar where we met the GREAT Renzo Gracie and Roger Gracie).

This is a real place to learn self-defence, fight and get fit. The drilling and techniques taught are done in a meticulous and detailed manner to ensure you are clear on what you do. Regular conferences by top world class BJJ elite athletes keeps your game on top. You learn practical techniques from day one and get to try them out on people of different abilities to improve your overall development. The head coach and his band of helpers are very knowledgeable and helpful. A great place for the entire family if need be to learn the most effective martial art in the world today. If you are small and want to learn how to control or beat a bigger person than you. Or if you are simply looking to lose weight or get fit. Then this is it. A full physical and mental workout to help boost your overall well being. I have been here for the past four months and it’s changed my body and my mind for the better.

Mathhouse is an excellent place to learn and develop yourself under the careful eye of Dominik. Dominik has created an environment where people of all skill and fitness levels can train together in a friendly and respectful place. I have been going here for about a year and I live over 15 miles away!! It is worth every penny. The experience, enthusiasm and professionalism Dom brings with him is second to none. More importantly the classes will bring you a life skill and you'll certainly learn a lot about yourself. The first class will get you hooked. Best fitness activity I have ever done...

I’ve recently been in the area due to work, naturally brought my Gi with me.
Found Mathouse BJJ on google search very quickly, checked the images and timetable and have to say this academy is spot on. Very clean, organised, all the facilities needed, students are respectful and helpful to each other and drop in students like myself. Credit to the Professor Dom a great academy. Hope to come back when next in the area.

Dom is an excellent instructor and the club has a very friendly atmosphere where everyone helps each other progress. If you're in or near Reading this is THE place to train. The fact the mats are packed after just over a year since the club began speaks for itself.

Mathouse is great place to train.
It can be scary. Especially when you come for the first time and see all the pumped up guys ready to strangle, break and destroy you. The truth is, nothing gets destroyed. If you are new, more experienced guys will adjust to your skill and help out. If you have never tried BJJ before, there is a massive chance you will get choked...a lot. Don’t worry! As your experience grows, soon you will be returning the favour.
BJJ can hurt, Just like any workout you have ever done. Rolling is hard. BJJ is a physical sport and if you don’t do well with sweat...maybe chess would be a better option. I promise that if you stick around, it will get better. You will get stronger and roll smarter.
Mathouse is a place full of great characters coming from all walks of life. It’s a good laugh with plenty of friendly banter. I guess it's always good to listen to some jokes before trying to choke each other out :)
Dominik is a great instructor, he’s personable, friendly & strives to get the best out of his students. He’s a Black belt with tons of experience that he enjoys sharing with everyone on the mat. If however, for some unknown reason his knowledge & experience is not enough for you, he also hosts seminars bringing in some of the best people in the sport.
For me personally the “you belong here” motto from his website convinced me to join and I have never looked back.
It doesn’t matter who or how good you are, once you put the Gi on - you are “one of us”, a new member of a great family.

MatHouse is an outstanding BJJ Academy, bringing to Reading the depth and knowledge of Roger Gracie Black Belt Dominik Debiec. Dom has built a truly amazing school where all his skill, passion and drive has improved and developed the lives of every person that has set foot on the mats. It is not just a hobby, he has helped me see that it is a way of life. The family that has been built over the last year and half is second to none, and welcoming of all levels of skill and commitment. From the moment you walk through the door, the welcoming atmosphere is obvious, smiles sand handshakes are traded easily, and you truly feel like you are home with La Familia. Everyone has your back, and there is a positive feeling that everyone wants you to succeed. I cannot recommend highly enough. Come along and start your journey, join the family, test yourself, it will be the best decision you have ever made.

The home away from home!
From a small club to a big family, Dom has built the area's best BJJ school.
With a growing competition team, there's nowhere but up for Dom and the Mathouse girls and boys.

Dropped in as I was working in Reading, meticulously clean with great facilities. Dominik was very welcoming and a really great host as were all of the students. Many thanks for letting me train Dominik.

This is a great place for beginners. I started with zero experience and was immediately made to feel welcome and relaxed. Plenty of new people joining all the time and the atmosphere is not at all 'clicky' or hostile. Highly recommended. The head teacher puts his heart and soul into every class.
