Fran is an excellent teacher. I come away from class each week more confident in my understanding of Japanese and increasingly more confident in speaking Japanese. Fran creates a warm and friendly environment and moves at a pace that is pitched well for the class. We have enough revision of a topic to feel that we really understand it, but at the same time we make good progress learning new vocabulary. I would definitely recommend learning Japanese with Step Up Japanese.

Fran’s Step Up Japanese classes have been a revelation! I started with the Japanese for Tourists class which gave me the confidence to move on to the beginners class and I’m now on my 3rd term and I’m improving all the time. Fran is great teacher, fun, encouraging and perceptive and she’s always looking for fresh and interesting ways to teach the language she loves. Moving the classes and one to one sessions during the Covid19 crisis has been smooth and was done quickly and innovatively. Highly recommend!

I truly have had the best language learning experience of my life with Fran at Step Up Japanese. After self-studying for nearly a year, I knew a decent amount of vocabulary but had poor understanding of basically everything else. Step Up Japanese really connected the dots and I have progressed leaps and bounds in the six months so far that I've been a student.
I originally looked into going back to college for "fun" but the cost was very high and I recall other foreign language classes being taught at such a fast pace where I worried that I wouldn't be getting what I really wanted out of it.
Step Up Japanese is incredibly affordable and is taught at the perfect pace. Learning with Fran is fun, not a chore. I cannot wait for my next trip to Japan with this ever-growing knowledge!

I've loved starting my learning-Japanese-journey with Fran's classes! Even though they're now over Zoom, the lessons are just as fun, relaxed and sociable as they were in the classroom. Fran's helped make the sometimes daunting task of learning a new (and hard) language a lot easier, due to her great teaching style and patience. I'm now in Step 2 and can't wait to continue further!

I started learning with Fran in the summer of 2020 having decided to commit to working hard to become fluent in a language I loved after having studied via Duolingo for a few years.
After a phonecall where Fran assessed my Japanese language level, I enrolled in the Pre-intermediate class. I was instantly satisfied with the culture of group lessons and the conversing in Japanese at all times (well, nearly). The way we are introduced to Kanji in a very manageable way over the course of the class is perfect for getting to grips with it. Fran's lovely and I recommend Step Up Japanese to anyone wishing to learn Japanese.

I have been studying Japanese with Fran for nearly one year now and it has been a real pleasure. Today, I looked back at my notes from when I started and it was great to see how far I've come. I don't consider myself a 'natural' when it comes to learning languages, so the success is down to Fran's excellent teaching, tailored to my own pace and abilities - and with just the right amount of encouragment and homework to ensure I do the work. Highly recommended, whatever your current level of ability!

Fran is patient and highly adaptable to a student's abilities; the adage, "No question is stupid" rings true, which is a testament to her teaching skills. Her classes push you just beyond the boundaries of your comfort zone and is absolutely spot-on for learners.
I would give Step Up Japanese a resounding recommendation. I have every confidence that if you purchase these lessons, you will not regret it.
Many thanks indeed to Fran and I very much look forward to the next term.

I first had lessons with Fran as I was taking an extended trip to Japan and wanted to be able to communicate. I have found Fran to be an excellent teacher and communicator, with so much patience with her students. She pitches lessons at the right level, and I have thoroughly enjoyed both individual and group lessons as well as her short courses. She has been particularly good at adapting her lessons to be online, and I would recommend her for learning Japanese wherever you are based.

Super friendly Japanese lessons with lovely and knowledgeable sensei! I've been taking Fran's lessons for 2 years now and couldn't be happier. The content taught is extremely useful if you're planning a trip to Japan or simply want to immerse yourself into the language. My sensei knows our weekly lesson is something I really look forward to, since we not only learn the basics but also have loads of fun grasping aspects of Japanese culture and Japanese people, by doing tons of different activities and games. Although we work on all 4 skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking), we mainly focus on improving our oral ability during our lessons, which is fab as you'll see yourself carrying conversations completely in Japanese with both your classmates and your sensei in no time! Fran is a great teacher, always understanding, cheerful and willing to help. The lessons are the perfect size, which allows for language learning and student participation in a smooth and effective way. In short, I am so so happy I discovered Fran and her Japanese lessons, so doubt no more and enroll!

I would definitely recommend Step Up Japanese classes!
I’ve been taking classes with Fran for over 6 months now, and in that short space of time I’ve really noticed huge benefits and improvements to my skill level.
Wether face to face meet up, or over Zoom, the one-to-one classes are always a fun atmosphere and a welcoming space to learn new things. Fran is super flexible and happily tailors classes according to your needs and style of learning. I’m not a huge fan of burying my head in a text book, so Fran keeps the lessons fun, with healthy doses of chat and cool little bits of information to keep the learning fresh.
The homework is always focussed towards reiterating the new things learnt in class, but also gives you enough scope to learn new aspects on your own. Allowing you to use the language in a way you feel comfortable with.
I would thoroughly recommend Sensei Fran (Step Up Japanese) if you are looking to expand your Japanese knowledge and have fun doing so!!

I have attended Fran-sensei’s classes for over three years now and I don’t think I have ever had a dull moment! The classes are fun, interesting and move at a good level to cement what we have learned without ever getting boring or repetitive. As well as learning Japanese you learn a wealth of information about Japan, it’s culture and everyday life.
The location in central Brighton is also a plus for me working in London.
Through the regular socials I feel like I have joined a real family. 素敵だいよ!

Fran Wrigley from Step Up Japanese is a gifted language teacher. Step Up Japanese is a great way to learn Japanese. She makes the class fun and easy to learn, a great investment!

Fran is a great teacher. Although covid situation she managed to organize her online lessons in such an amazing way! For example we don't miss out on opportunities to practice dialogues and talk with fellow classmates in small groups or pairs which I think is really useful but also helps to get to know people on your course more. She is also always there to answer any of your questions. After a short time I found myself getting really exited for the lesson each week. I really like that I can learn something new on every lesson which I think is important when learning new language.
So if you're looking to learn Japanese I think you will find something for yourself no matter your age or proficiency level :)

I've taken two of Fran's Japaneses classes now and find Fran to be an excellent teacher, always open to questions and able to explain complicated language concepts in a clear and understandable manner, the zoom classes are very open and inclusive, cannot recommend highly enough.

There are easier languages for English speakers to learn than Japanese but, with the right teacher, the barriers can be overcome in an enjoyable way. Fran is such a teacher; she is professional, supportive, and knowledgeable.
Don't fear Japanese. Step into it with confidence as Fran guides you through this marvelous language.

I am really enjoying the lessons. Fran is a great teacher & makes the lessons fun, interesting & informative. We have so far done a variety of aspects of the language & regularly revise what we have already covered. The homework is interesting & enjoyable as well. I look forward to the lessons every week.

When I first looked for a Japanese course, I did considered whether I should find a teacher who’s Japanese which most of my friends will, as we thought it’s essential for learning language from a native speaker. Although Fran is not a Japanese but I have no regret choosing Step Up Japanese for the below reasons.
* She offers a proper learning structure/courses for different level of learning. This means you can continue to improve your Japanese from beginner to higher level. This is not something always available in other learning centres.
* She is more than capable to explain/elaborate the lesson in English, this is important for us to fully understand the content and also helped in remembering. This might not be the case for a teacher who’s Japanese.
* She worked in Japan for years and therefore she knows the cultures, this helped us to understand the language beyond textbooks.
* She made learning language a fun, relax and interesting thing. This is important for me as I have a stressful job plus I don’t think a person can improve much when learning becomes a stressful and boring thing.

Frans lessons are really relaxed and friendly. Its a fun atmosphere to learn Japanese. Our classes moved from classroom to zoom during covid which wasn't an issue. I enjoyed my first year and just signed up to step 2!!

Fran's classes are fun, and offer much more depth than a book alone could do. Lessons are clear and engaging, and Fran is always supportive, attentive and happy to answer questions, if ever you need help.
The friendly attitude the classes are taught with help to produce a sense of community and camaraderie amongst classmates. This creates a very warm, comfortable space for learning, especially for speaking practice, which I'd normally find to be quite a daunting task.
I find the lesson work and homework to be motivating, and it inspires me to try new things without worrying about making mistakes. Most importantly for me, when I go home at the end of a lesson, I feel the desire to study further and really get stuck into the Japanese language, which makes me incredibly happy to be a Step Up Japanese student.

I highly recommend Step Up Japanese classes. I’ve done two terms and about to start my third term.
Classes are small and friendly. The programme is very well planned and with lots of varied activities. I have studied other languages in the past and the process of learning can be quite dry, but this course is really creative and also offers insights into contemporary Japanese culture which enriches the experience.

A really great school in the heart of Brighton. I have been attending Fran's lessons for over three years and have never had a dull lesson. Always left fizzing with new phrases - even after a long day at work. In fact it is always something to look forward to!

I love the courses Fran does, I’m about to start my third in October.
