Reviews of Library of Birmingham
M. H.
Its a grand location, beautiful building. Its a little complicated getting around, whilst there are signs, and the staff are really helpful. There is a lot of unused space and shelves. The computers are somewhat quirky. The Secret Garden and the Shakespeare Memorial Room, and the view across the city are amazing space. Highly recommend.
G. W.
Interesting building particularly the inside levels. Great viewing area on the 9th floor which also has a small Shakespeare room. Good spaces for study and lots of books. Definitely worth a visit even if just to go up the escalators.
F. W. (.
Definitely the best library I have ever been to in the world!! I love the design and honestly can not wait to come back here in three months time! But, til then I shall miss it so dearly.
B. A.

Loved this high tech, multi storey library. The architecture is amazing and it's accessible to all. I visited before lockdown in December 2019 and would love to go again
M. I.
A huge library with an immense assortment of books spread over a number of floors. The highlight has to be The Secret Garden which is based outside and the view of Birmingham from the top floor. Very child friendly with a wonderful children's section, a must for all kids who love to read.
f. r.
My favourite library, I travel more than an hour because my local library isn't very good. They don't have enough books and don't cater for every kind of genre. Where as this one does and even has an outdoor garden on one of the floors.
A. W. I.
Outstanding place !
You can go there to read, use a computer, to enjoy the view of Birmingham city. Staff are super kind especially the security guards !
s. K.
The view from the garden is awesome. Such a peaceful and relaxing place. The staff very friendly and brilliant.
s. k.
This is one of my favorite spot in Birmingham. If you are a book lover who likes to lead then this place is for you. Very helpful place.
F. C.
Visited library for interview to be volunteer at commonwealth games 2022
What a fantastic venue!
A fantastic library !
I was library assistant for ten years and would have loved to have worked in a place like this, a huge place!
It looks like an interesting building, and a bit strange but looks nothing like you would expect a library to look like, til you get inside!
My pics don't do it justice, some people uncomfortable with photos bein taken so kept to min
M. D. L.
Many thanks to Richard at reception on 08/12/21 around 14:00 who was very approachable and went above and beyond to help me today. I was still there when he was helping other people on the queue and exhibited the same level of enthusiasm and patience. He should get a raise!

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor its a really iconic building with bags of character. That apart, the staff are realy helpfull and cant wait to see it back on its feet following the pandemic...

Awesome library especially the roof top garden visit is a must. Beautiful scenery with 360 view and its like a garden with benches so you can relax. There are two gardens one is situated in on the 7th floor and the other on the 9th floor. Lifts are slow and small so you may have to wait a while otherwise use the stairs.
C. O.
Amazing place and well worth the visit, with a lovely open-air terrace overlooking the square.
m.
The Library is a stunning modernist building and a public library to boot. It's free to enter and one I think levels 7 to 9 are roof gardens where you can step out and get amazing views of Birmingham and Centenary Square were it not currently under development. On the top floor is also views, but only behind windows. Here you'll also find a very special room, the Shakespeare Room. It's a wood-panelled room originally built to house Birmingham's Shakespeare collection, but rebuilt here in the city's new library.
The facilities are also ultra modern with lots of computers, places to study and even private rooms for those who prefer quieter environments to study.
J. W.
First time visiting the new library since it built, very impressed with layout of the library. Had a nice chat with two of the security staff.
A. S.
It’s a good place to study and work and it’s quite relaxing but they should closer later and stay open till 9pm as it gives more time for those to study.
A.
Amazing place. Perfect for studying. Massive collection of literature. Beautiful place. There is also nice view if you go to the garden outside or visit the top floor. Check out the pics of what you can see. Free entry for everyone. If you are visiting Birmingham then you have to see this place.
L. G.
Really good location for a theatre style venue to hire. I was really surprised with their meeting facilities. Definitely would recommend this place.
E. B.
Amazing building from outside and inside. The view from the secret garden cannot be explained with words.
M. M.
This is a visually stunning new piece of architecture for Birmingham and Europe as it is one of the largest libraries on the continent. Beautiful array of gardens on the 4th and 7th floor. The Shakespeare Room at the top of the library is incredible and has been restored and moved from the original library. The upper floors have been designed to have an open mezzanine spanning several floors and is visually incredible. Definitely worth a visit and it is free. There is a café on the ground floor. Wheelchair accessible and friendly

I was with my girlfriend in Birmingham for short visit and it was a great chance to see and visit the library. It’s a very beautiful building from outside and from the inside it’s great place. So many great books that you can get for any research you just dream about it! And the great room of Shakespeare is just amazing!
D. R.
What a library!!! From the outside architecture through the sections and books up to the skyline - amazing! Take the stairs and visit the "Shakespeare Memorial Room" or take a break and watch Birmingham in front of you! Go through the different exhibitions or dive into the books (additionally there are books offered for sale and one could probably find "next-book-to-read" Must see part of Birmingham!
M. S.
Best library i've gone to, well worth a visit! Has a roof garden, a shakespear section and an amazing section in the middle as you ascend the escalators full of rows and rows of leather bound books.
R. C.
I went to the library to have an interview for the Commonwealth Games hopefully as a volunteer I will be able to help when the games are on

The Library of Birmingham is a public library in Birmingham, England. It is situated on the west side of the city centre at Centenary Square, beside the Birmingham Rep (to which it connects, and with which it shares some facilities) and Baskerville House. Upon opening on 3 September 2013, it replaced Birmingham Central Library. The library, which is estimated to have cost £188.8 million, is viewed by the Birmingham City Council as a flagship project for the city's redevelopment. It has been described as the largest public library in the United Kingdom, the largest public cultural space in Europe, and the largest regional library in Europe.
M. P.
First time here and with limited time due to the time we arrived went to the children's area first. Following this went to the 9th floor for the Skyview. The view is brilliant especially in a clear day. You are able to see well into the distance. You also get a great view of all the work currently going on in Birmingham. Went to the 7th floor after to the Secret Garden. This is where you can get the same view but outside on the rooftop garden. Brilliant open top view. Will visit again when I have a bit more time but great first impression and visit
T.
An amazing place to study, visit or research. Very modern, well organised and structured Library.
The interior is amazing. There is a cafe on the ground floor. You can even catch views of the city from the upper levels by taking a stroll outside.
Highly recommend.
R. G.
Went here for the 2022 Commonwealth Games interview. The process was well organized and nice and simple at every stage. The library has a nice atmosphere and all the staff were approachable and helpful.
S. K.
One of my favourite places to visit ( when it's back open) the views from the top roof top gardens are fabulous you can see surrounding Birmingham. Shakespeare room is wondrous and peaceful the view from here is spectacular, the library is well designed with a lovely children area , pods for watching movies, coffee place a little expensive tho, souvenir shop study areas and the building from the outside is eye catching . One of the 5 libraries in the Europe to visit. The only thing that let's it down are the opening hours and closed on a Sunday .
J. A.
Love this library. The perfect place to go and work. So many places to sit and study. Can print and scan your documents. So many books I haven’t ventured to browse yet. Cute cafe on the ground floor. Friendly helpful staff. Never too busy. Air con when it’s hot too.
K.
Great views over the city! :)
J. D.
Should be a 5 but the initially wonderful Library of Birmingham has been compromised through poor management and maintenance while local users continue to pay a fortune for its development. An entire floor of this 'people's palace' (architect's words) was soon taken from the people and privately leased which I thought was a disgusting betrayal. It's still a marvellous place but I have no faith in those running it and it should be even better than it is.
M. H.
Huge library building with 7 floors. Lots of categories and separate children events.
H.
Loved it and not only how big the space is but being able to go right up to the top and look down on Birmingham and just chill it's really relaxing.
G. P.
What a magnificent building. It's a cathedral of books and worth a visit just for the architecture and the views from the terrace and the secret garden right at the top.
H. J.
Love this building, it has an interesting architecture for a library and has millions of books
S. V.
The Library in Birmingham is pretty great. I came here a lot when I lived in Birmingham. The building is modern from the outside and from the inside. I really enjoyed drinking a coffee in the cafeteria or look over the city from the terace which is open to the public. Pretty impressive building. 5*
M. H.
It was like Harry Potter world and the roundness of the library set out was amazing and very quiet as well as exceptional options of courses, please please fund the British Libraries like these...
G. L.
Beautiful and well stocked. Nice to work as well but very slow WiFi
A. B.
Atmosphere was peaceful and tranquil, navigation to the secret garden was slightly complex and I had to navigate myself to the garden but eventually found it, after I assisted others trying to access the garden as even they found it confusing
S. B.
A fantasticly updated area of Birmingham and the Library takes centre stage, well worth a visit. Especially the top floor for the views and display of original Library.
S. U. Ó. L.
A good place for someone who loves books more than shopping while their partner shops. Music section is very good but science is disappointing Unfortunately, it closes before the shops.
S. P.
Great selection of books for all ages. My 7 yo son loved borrowing the books and enjoyed a lovely walk in The Secret Garden
D. M.
A must visit in Birmingham. Amazing views from level 7!
M. E.
Amazing space. So refreshing to be in a building that's not a boring stuffy library but a spectacular structure.
K.
Both roof top gardens are now open :)
They have the Commonwealth Games guys using a large area of the Library but you can still go in.
T. T.
Beautiful piece of architecture in Birmingham city centre...amazing views making it ideal for some great pictures...
If going by car paradise circus car park is the closest..
L. S.
Beautiful architecture. A bibliophile's dream.
j. f.
Not a library in the traditional sense of the word. You will find peace..finding quiet is not guaranteed but there are places to sit and read ( somewhat) quietly.
N. T.
A beautiful building inside and like marmite on the outside, I like it. Great facilities for study, somewhere quiet and great views of the city from floor 4, 7 and 9.
B. W.
First time here and it was lovely. The view from the 9th floor is good. Loved the secret garden.
D. H.
Very nice place bigger then I thought
L. A.
Amazing space, well worth a visit! Top level for secret garden - stunning views and walk around rooftop. Indoor escalators, moving bookcases, fantastic facilities. Downstairs cafe is adequate but service very slow.
M. R.
Visited for 3/4 hours and worked from here. Great environment for those looking to an alternative to WFH. The secret garden is tranquil and deserves a visit.
Could possibly do with more staff at busy periods.
K. P.
Amazing Design for Library... The upper floors worth a visit and spiral bookcases.
N. R. O. S.
Its a really big library and it's beautiful from the inside and it has got some nice gardens on the roof
S. R.
Great Piece of modern architecture, it's like a temple for books. Definitely worth a view also for tourists. From the roof garden there's a great view over Birmingham. In the top of the building you can visit Shakespeare's 'original' library.
T. C.
Went to Library of Birmingham due to heavy rain, and the unscheduled visit really surprised me
The Secret Gardens must be very nice during Summer
The Shakespeare’s Memorial Room at the 9th Floor was a little surprise for me, which also lead to visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace there following day at Stratford-upon-Avon
C. Y.
What a beautiful library in terms of the exterior and interior! Love the friendly staff here and spacious study area!
M. H. (.
Good place but the 9th floor stairs door could do with a sign to let you know it's the Shakespeare floor
M. K.
Beautiful library. Very modern. My daughter and I really enjoy the kids area, full of children's books and comfy seating. There's a kids' stay and play once a week which we enjoy attending as well.
B. G.
One of the best in Europe by all standards
S. J.
One of the best and most beautiful libraries I have ever seen. It’s more of a tourist location in Birmingham.
S. T.
Great library, lovely open space and plenty of room to sit and read.
A. T.
Very historical and beautiful views
N. I.
Very modern building and facilities. Worth a visit.
P. M.
Really nice building and brilliant inside. Great views of the city at the top.
M. N.
Gorgeous library of Birmingham! You have to check out the outdoor space and the Shakespeare Memorial Room!
N.
What an amazing library! So big with so much to offer. Visit the secret garden for a spectacular view of Birmingham.
M. C.
All the staff members in the library are very nice and helpful. Special thanks to Neil which I meet on 3/F, he is an energetic gentleman and extremely helpful. Thank you Neil!
F. P. C.
Beatiful building, really stands out on Birmingham architectural atmosphere! It is possible to climb up to the terraces, to view both the skyline of the city and the gardens up there! I surely do recommend! Also on the ground floor - I may be mistaken - there are some stuff that are open to the community...
B.
Warm, cafe and toilets, free WiFi, great views from the top
I. H.
Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Remember to find the Upper Gardens you will not be disappointed
M. W.
fantastic day out
M. Z.
Its a shame about the limited opening hours but we enjoy going to this library. Nice little park located behind the library and a car park to. Parking can be an issue. Photo is from an article I took for BPYC a few years back
o.
The view is stunning!
M. A.
My local library has a vast collection of books and is only a few years old. Very modern look with great spots to take pictures especially the rooftop!
y. ö.
It is a superior library with 5 floors. It has got a terrace at the top floor. It has coffee shop and theatre. There is a big and artistic square in front of the library.
G. K.
Take the stairs to the secret garden, on top of the Birmingham Library.
N. B.
Beautiful with so many wonderful resources. Only a little disappointment in the large amount of books that are reference only. Maybe limit some to 7 day lending instead?
R. M.
Good job, didnt think they could match the previous one for ambience and character.
Welcome to the mothership!!
M. S.
Lovely building and great experience at my commonwealth games volunteer interview 😀
M. A.
Friendly staff and wheel chair access with lifts plenty of choice for books. Also the commonwealth games interviews are being held there at the moment.
G. G.
Great place to visit. Secret Garden at 7th floor must see
C. P.
Not the same feel or experience as pre covid however still a very nice place to go to and explore the nerd in you 😀
S. W.
Amazing architecture! Never had a chance to visit this architectural gem despite living just 5 miles away. Went there with my photography club mates and we all enjoyed every minute! We took a lot of pictures inside as well outside on the terrace - spectacular views from the terrace by the way!
l. e.
I was at the library for my volunteer interview for the Commonwealth games, Great experience thanks.
M. P.
Stunning modern architecture. Can't comment on the facilities of the library, but it's great to explore the many outdoor views and interiors.
R. B.
Beautiful library, well organised and full of great books to choose from and other series
a. b.
Looks a fantastic building but unfortunately did not go inside. My wife was greeted by a member of staff at the front entrance , who was extremely rude and obnoxious. Very disappointed as this building had been recommended. Working in social care and my wife a nurse regrettably we feel a course in customer care would be beneficial for the staff
G. R.
Perhaps one of the greatest public buildings that Europe has seen built for at least a decade. It does everything a library should as well as being an inspiring and superbly designed building which empowers both local people and visitors . It really does make you feel proud to be a citizen of Birmingham. I agree with others on the need for longer and weekend opening times, the reduction of hours was an abysmal policy decision, and needs to be rectified.
A. U.
Enormous!!! You will most likely find what you are looking for and the place is squeaky clean
A. K.
It was my first time visiting the central library and I must say I am impressed. Good customer service and good environment
R. C.
Probably the coolest building in town. Great views of the city from the top!
G. R.
Went for the first time for an interview for Commonwealth games. Place is massive and very impressive
K. M.
I went in the other week to do some work and I loved it in there. So many choices of books on so many levels.
M. B. A.
Extremely big and spacious, has a café on the ground floor. Has rooms dedicated for praying. Has an open balcony on two floors. Perfect for reading and studying.
T. q. a. K. i. t. c.
Amazing library
Good for studying
Festive attractions
C. T.
Missing popular best sellers and computers ruining on outdated Windows 7. Staff super helpful
T. D.
Huge library with lots of collection for kids. We can take 10 books together and return back within 28 days.
A. K.
Huge and pleasand liberary plenty of places where you can borrow books and sit in comfortably and study.
M. J.
Fantastic views for miles around from the Secret Garden at the top of the Library if Birmingham. Highly recommended!
A. S.
A fantastic facility for Birmingham. In an even better setting than ever now that all the building work nearby is nearing completion.
C. L.
Amazing space which is truly amazing when you stand in the middle on the ground floor and look up. As you would expect from a library it has lots of books and excellent resources. There are plenty of break out areas and study zones to go to and read and chill out. The Shakespeare room alone is worth a visit and the views from the balconies are amazing on a clear day. Also the cafe on the ground floor is well appointed. An all round great place to visit.
O. H.
I absolutely love this library! A great space to be in to read and learn. I recommend going up through the building discovering the different areas. The map section is very cool and I love the roof terrace gardens. The top floor has a Shakespeare room and a great view.
A. F.
Absolutely fantastic range of books, articles and other resources available - from school/uni books to fictional books to whatever other books you can think of and it all free to borrow! By far the biggest library in all of Birmingham and most definitely the best looking both inside and outside
H. N.
We are so lucky to have such a beautiful building as the library in Birmingham. Good selection of books, wonderful staff, handy cafe, study corners, kids library, beautiful viewing terraces (must see!) and high escalators that take you above the clouds, this place is one of my favorite spots in Birmingham.
As per library membership, I love that they have a growing number of e-books / audio books which you can access through Libby app. Thank you all the staff at Birmingham Library, I feel privileged to have the services you provide.
C. D.
Children's library good. Children were disappointed that they could not go up to the secret garden, no reason given why the garden and terrace were closed off.
M. B.
Great place to enjoy some knowledge or just the views or a cafe. No thrill, just an awesome place to visit.
A.
It was a good set out, however, we couldn't even access the majority of the books, and the roof was closed.
N. F.
An absolutely astounding library. The interior design was wonderful and so aesthetically pleasing. It was a great experience walking through all the way to the top. Unfortunately, my visit was cut short as the RAC service person got to my car earlier than anticipated (tyre got punctured) and called me back. I will definitely be visiting and showing the rest of my family when I am in Birmingham again. A true landmark, would recommend a visit.
A. A.
A great location for my Commonwealth Games interview experience!
J. T.
A very interesting building on several floors, a huge selection of books and a children's area. Unfortunately no where to sit down and the cafe is currently closed.
B. A.
This is one of the best libraries I've ever been too. I love to read and so when my aunty suggested we go I leaped at the chance. They have so much to offer even if you aren't a keen reader. The music rooms can be rented at a good price and we enjoyed the skyline view from the top.
J. H.
Nice place to de-stress sitting watching the fountain
C. C. &. P.
Had a lovely day at Birmingham Library, such a beautiful building. I especially enjoyed the gardens with fab views of the city. If it's open go to the 9th floor to the museum, it is made up of some of the original birmingham library, bookcases ceiling etc. Nice little cafe there too
A. A.
It was very nice, helpful stuff and spent time at the secret garden on 7th floor.
R. V.
Great views from the Secret Garden and top floor
M. H.
Lovely buildong and facilities inside including Brasshouse Languages
A. A.
One of the best libraries to visit in the UK.
S. K.
Amazing place. Staff at the archives very helpful
B. K.
Birmingham at night , cafes , library , relaxing , having fun
R. P.
The Library in Birmingham is pretty great. I came here a lot when I lived in Birmingham. The building is modern from the outside and from the inside. I really enjoyed drinking a coffee in the cafeteria or look over the city from the terace which is open to the public. Pretty impressive building. 5*
A. y.
Really lovely library. So many different floors. Great atmosphere and really good natural lightening. If you need a bit of fresh air there's a big balcony or even The Secret Garden's which have wonderful views of the surrounding Birmingham Scenery. Staff members were also very nice and helpful. Only probably is the timings not very suitable for a student who wishes to do long hours of revision.
L. S.
An impressive modern building. While it's open and airy, it doesn't feel to me like a welcoming or cosy space to read. Non-fiction resources are good, but the fiction leaves a lot to be desired. However, staff are always polite and helpful, and access to the technology provided is good.
M.
Very good place lots of books
F. S.
This place is absolutely delightful. Huge 9 floor library, free membership and a sophisticated borrowing system. It also has a Muslim prayer room on the 2nd floor for gents and ladies! I was actually impressed by the security folks who told us how to explore the place - start at the 9th floor to vist the skyline, and work our way down to the other sights in the building... brilliantly architected and planned. Newcomers will need to spare at least an hour to explore this whole library
C. N.
The Library in Birmingham is definitely a Library like no other, it has a massive range of books and music to borrow or read inside the actual library itself with plenty of seating available.
The library has three sighting points too, there are two terraces and one big glass window on the top floor so it can also be perfect photographers.
Overall I would say that it is a great place to study as there is plenty of space and floors to explore the only downside is that it is not very easy to get to especially if you don't live in Birmingham.
G. W.
The facade of the building is rather a blight on the area by Chamberlain Square, but once you get inside, it's really rather good. Excellent range of books, though many of them are non-loanable. Particularly impressive is the selection of CDs in the basement.
Rather like a book, judge the building by what's on the inside - its outside is most disagreeable and best forgotten.
K. K.
Great place to study, there's group seating, plenty of IT facilities, soundproof rooms, loads of resources for all subjects and all levels of education. People are very respectful and mind their surroundings. It is very clean and modern with lots of natural lighting. It's a state-of-the-art library
W. j.
Very good place for books lovers and very big
D. H.
The roof of this is one of the best places to view Birmingham from. If you are visiting Birmingham don't miss this place. But if you just want to study or read the papers there is an excellent selection. I can be difficult to find your way to the top, just take the lift,to the right of the first escalator, it's easy then. Don't miss the Shakespeare room and the secret garden.
T. K. C.
Visited the MIND exhibition! Really peaceful and insightful.
D.
A large collection within a contemporary setting with light and space. The Shakespeare collection on level 9 was very interesting and seems to have been laid out like a museum exhibit. From historic folios to city maps to novels and a computer suite, it offers more levels of education that should be explored within oneself.
NB The views from the public balconys were fantastic and show the progression of Birmingham architecturally to a very modern city.
_.
I was on this library few times, gardens on the floors are a great place to relax. I recommend to everyone
D. W.
Much maligned architecturally (unfairly so, in my opinion), what this building does absolutely right is the function it was designed to do: be a library. Knowledgeable staff, perfectly laid out and a number of nooks and crannies to escape into for a read. Although I'd recommend the roof garden in the summer months.
R. F.
Very well organised. Clearly laid out with good signage and although many levels the escalators take away the hard work. The Story Steps for children is a nice touch. Useful cafe for having a break.
E. A.
The internet was quite slow. Five star regardless.
C. S.
I was in Birmingham for a weekend and paid a visit to the library. The building is gorgeous from the outside but if you are a big fan of books and libraries as I am, take some time to explore the place. It is huge and the studying area is super nice as well - if my local or my uni library were offered half of what the Library of Birmingham offers I would spend way more time studying :)
J. W.
It is unusual to have places you can be proud of to take friends and family to in Brum. Fantastic building inside & out! Well worth looking at when you visit Birmingham. Right in the middle of the city so perfect if you only have a few minutes spare to walk past or have a couple of hours to explore inside.
N. K.
Absolutely amazing architecture! The whole building is practically a monument. But being used as library isn't really working for students (like myself) or full time workers. Staff are unhelpful, there is a lack of seating, and the opening and closing times are ridiculous! Coming here to work/study is impossible. You would be better off going to a more local library. Even though there is a lack of variation in books at local libraries, they are very quiet and have enough seating for everyone there.
H. F.
A great place spatially in a fantastic central location. All the facilities you need from a modern library. The Shakespeare Memorial Room on the top floor is a specially nice feature, with nice views over the city. It's a crying shame that it's not opened 7 days a week and for longer hours.
M.
Wonderful space
Being used as the centre of the Commonwealth 2022 selection process
A. B.
Great tourist attraction...but I couldn't find the books I was looking for. There is not as much of a range as expected from such a big building.
V. D.
The old Central Library might not have looked attractive to many but it was a lot more relaxing and accessible. I really don't see what they had to shrink this library so much into this new, comparatively tiny cube which looks to me much like a giant wedding cake - is this because it was designed by a woman?
A. B.
Nice library. Helpful staff but always liked the old library!
L. S.
Beautiful building inside and out, the gardens on the terraces in particular are well worth visiting, as well as the Shakespeare room and the skyline view. There are also lots of places to study quietly inside and a nice cafe to use as well.
L. S.
PROS:
- beautiful design outside and inside (modern, bright and spacious),
- so many levels and so many books (not all can be checked-out),
- two cafés on two different levels,
- chairs, desks and computers are provided for members (charging too),
- worth visiting even if you are not a member.
CONS:
- there could be more seating provided (we were walking around for a while, but everything was occupied),
- completely weird/useless opening times, unless you are a tourist (it only opens at 11am and closes at 5pm already).
K. A.
A wonderful library with plenty of space to sit, and a wide range of books to read and learn from. The only thing is, with a lot of the best books being reference books that cannot be checked out, it would have been nice to have longer opening hours, at least during the week. As a student this would also make travelling to the library more cost effective as I could get more done in a single day.
M. J. P.
One of the best libraries I've ever been. The children's library is fantastic, highly recommended their babies 'Stay & Play' activities if you are new in town and have a babe. There you can meet other mums and dads and your children have lots of fun. Don't forget to visit the Secret Garden on the 7th floor.
R. P.
Beautiful building which is just a good a place to work as it is to visit - there two different balconies to look over Birmingham, both with lovely gardens and benches to sit on. The work spaces are fun and good for individuals or groups of people. Wide variety of books too.
D. M.
This library as far as the architecture is concerned is one of the best libraries I've ever seen. It was jaw dropping amazing place to be...we went to the kids section and the staff was very friendly. I wanted an audio book for my child, the PC's were all taken....we explored each and every floor, it was stunning and inviting...the lounge area where you can gang up with your friends and watch documentaries with your headsets on is pretty innovative...the Shakespear's Memorial is pretty remarkable a place to visit...the best of all is the view from the secret garden :-) The unique colour combination of lights, furniture, books and ambiance makes it a must visit place ! As far as the collection of books and timings of the library are concerned I'm afraid I not the right person to comment, which ideally is the most important purpose of a library.
M.
Whilst the architecture and the interior of the library is beautiful and a very pleasant place to be, the opening and closing times are utter rubbish. I am a student and much prefer to study in the library as it has a nice, peaceful atmosphere with no distractions. However, the library opens too late (11am) and more annoyingly, closes way... way too early! (5pm!!!!!) The only place that is open until 9pm is the ground floor which isn't big enough and the cafe. But if you're not a student going to study, you'll really enjoy this place.
s. o. t. s.
Free access for everyone, so ideal :)
S. b.
Recommended by family to visit the library as was told we could look out at Birmingham City at the top of the library to look at the views however sadly we was turned away as it wasn't open until 21st june
S. C.
Navigating the museum is literally a visual feast. All of the intricate details really do make it a fantastic place to visit. From the secret garden, to the great glass elevator, it brings some of the magical feeling back to visiting the library.
D. B.
Impressive building, great outdoor terraces and fascinating how the building spaces reveal themselves; however, not opening on Sunday is a great shame, 11am opening during the week is also not good enough. The city must fund the library so staff don't have to buy the books (!) and the opening hours reflect the communities needs.
L. J.
Loved the building, loved the atmosphere from inside, good place for study and work
X. N. L.
The library of Birmingham is still in its early stage, so all resources that can get from this library are very limited. The books displayed on mandarin section were funny as majority of them were low graded romantic fiction.
Apart from the main purpose of library, knowing the ideas and background knowledge on the construction of the whole building make me appreciate more during my visit, people put so much effort to keep the standard of ' The Green Library of Birmingham'. I love secret garden, it's a great place to chill out and clear your mind.
E. M.
My favourite place in Birmingham. This library is a masterpiece! 😍
J. M.
A tour of this building is a must for any visitor (or indeed locals). Make sure you visit some of the outdoor garden terraces which are splendid. Make sure you visit the top floor where the Shakespeare Memorial Room is situated; you can get some great views of the City from here.
P. K.
A new, modern, landmark building near the middle of the main civic complex of buildings (Town Hall, Museum, Concert Hall, Convention Centre, etc.). No special pass is needed if you want to just wander around, browse books or newspapers, or look at the view from one of the rooftop terrace gardens; therefore well worth a visit even if you have no interest in books or libraries!
E. H.
We are so lucky to have such a beautiful building as the library in Birmingham. Endless selection of books, wonderful staff, handy cafe, beautiful viewing terraces and high escalators that feel endless this place is one of my favorite spots in Birmingham.
As per library membership I love that they have a growing number of e-books which helps keeping the habit going! :) Thank you all the staff at Birmingham Library, I feel privileged to have the services you provide. The escalators are also realy realy realy realy realy realy fun.
H. M.
It's a spacious place, very welcoming. Reception and Cafeteria on ground floor Never-ending of Books streaming from first floor. Library SHOULD be open earlier till late.
D. S.
Great architecture in Birmingham but it is just a normal library inside .
S.
3.5/5
Great library which has the potential to be the best library.
It's gorgeous to look at both inside and out, helpful staff, variety of books, and a good place for those who work on their laptops.
HOWEVER, the library suffers from lack of staff and funding. The opening times are frankly poor. The ground floor opens at 9am, but the floors above and below it AKA the floors with ALL the main facilities and resources are closed and open from 11am. They then close at 5pm (exc Mon & Tues, where they close at 7pm), this makes it difficult for those who have jobs.
If one could have access to all the facilities at an earlier time and close at a much later time (e.g. 7/8am - 10/11pm), or better yet make it 24 hrs, then it'd be one of the best libraries.
t.
Really good place for a day out. Wonderful place to spend with family and friends or even enjoy a great view of the city. Staff are lovely, but opening hours are ridiculous. It's a library not a takeaway shop. Please improve!
C. G.
Extremely spacious and well laid out. An excellent facility with a lot to offer including two open air terraces with great view over the city. There is also a cafe area in the library too.
H.
Beautiful, huge library with a truly unique design. Opening hours for the intruding parts of the library (such as the Shakespeare exhibit, viewing platform on Level 9 etc.) are far too short, though, being closed by the time I visited just after 5pm.
A. M.
Amazing place at all levels, although not enough supported by the Council. Opening hours are too limited and prices at the cafe are ridiculously overprized. A public space that should be open 24 hs and include more food and cultural activities in order to reach its full potential.
R. A.
It's quite a long walk from Birmingham city centre but it's good and massive
J. C.
Great building with a huge range of things to do and look at, and facilities like hireable music practice rooms and photocopying/printing equippment. I especially love the floor 9 viewing gallery, which offers great views of birmingham in over 180 degrees. Perfect place to kill loads of time.
K. B.
There's alot to love about the library of Birmingham. Its great inside and the outside views from Garden and at the top of building of the surrounding area are stunning. I dont mind the way it looks from the outside but I know its like Marmite, some love it and others hate it. My biggest gripe about the library was Birmingham City Council deciding to cut the opening hours not long after it opened, its a great facility for the people of Birmingham and wider that sadly the local council dont recognise. Service in the cafe could be friendlier and I would love more of lovely comfy red chairs as the chances of getting one are limited at times, unless you buy something in the cafe and go up the stairs!
L. R.
A great resource, the garden on level 7 is so quaint and beautiful in amongst the busy city, the viewing area at the top affords panoramic views of Birmingham and has a special Shakespeare room which is a lovely touch!
G. S.
This national library I hadbeen9years back 2009novembet. yesterday I revisited and I couldn't believe that it is the same place with had visited 9yesrs back? A master piece of architectural achievement. it has entirely change the concept of a library. Ground floor is nicely decorated with Reception counter, acoffee and snacks section Library information corner and lower ground cover S children activities floor. From 1st to 6th level all supported with escalators with adds to the esthetic value of the library not only that each level has modern seating arrangements plus reading and meetting rooms, toilets modern concept of hygiene and when u r on level 7 the entire out look turns into a modern botanical garden where u can seat and enjoy the charm of reading and be with nature. Really don't think u r in garden in fact u r @National Library Birmingham. And finally on Level9 be a man on the top of Birmingham sky line and enjoy 16miles visibility of entire Birmingham. So this is modern concept of the world famous masterpiece of The British culture. I'm lucky to get chance of my life.
M. D.
Very beautiful place. Entire area around is full of beautiful pubs and restaurants. Happening area around.Building of Library is very attractive
c. D.
The library is very spacious inside. Located on the ground floor when you walk in they have a cafe. I would definitely recommend going onto the 2nd floor terraced/balcony area and seeing the views of Birmingham. On a hot day, you can see from Colemore Row to Broadstreet. The library is very modern inside.
C. K.
Okay Okay. First of all you will be thinking. What? A review about a Library... Really 5 Stars. But honestly please read on. I visited it just out of curiosity and ended up spending hours there and not reading a single book.
Firstly the building looks amazing, its the most unusual building in Birmingham even after the Bullring Shopping Centre. It has a unique design and has to be seen to understand and appreciate from its design and size.
Inside there are some real finds. Firstly its the most modern and amazing piece of architecture i've ever saw in a library with some really modern design work and blue light up escalators and a glass lift.
Go up a few floors and you find the first of 2 Outdoor Garden spaces looking over the birmingham city centre. Firstly you get a great view and get to take a stroll around the building. Plenty of books and computers to see and use.
Go up a few more floors to the 7th floor and there is the second higher outdoor garden "The Secret Garden" looking over the city again which you can walk round 3 sides of the building to sww views from all directions. This is the perfect spot for a summers reading or a winters day to look over a clear view of the centre.
Now finally following the stairs or lift further and along a few corridors, past the toilets and you come to the final internal viewing platform on level 9. It has a spectacular view. But the hidden gem is the Room dedicated to Shakespeare. Its an old world building, only 1 room but is amazing its set up at the tip of this huge building and is a room that has to be seen to be appreciated. Amazing and is like stepping back in time.
Overall this is a great place to visit, other things to note are lots of toilet facilities, a coffee bar on the upper floors open some times. Computers free to use, photocopiers, and not to forget thousands of books.
I recommend this as a place to visit. Honestly best library ever!
L. T.
Amazing place to visit and enjoy every weekend. Facilties are great and so much things to discover. Large collection then you can find whatever you need. Love it.
M. R.
Stunning library a must see for Birmingham Brilliant
G. Y.
Still very much a 'Marmite' building - you generally either love it, or hate it. I'm slowly veering towards the former, despite the reduction in opening hours, and the ridiculous amount of public money that was spent on the new website. Definitely worth a visit, even if it's only to zoom up to the roof garden for the fabulous views over the city.
D.
Moving from Birmingham during its construction, the Library of Birmingham was a must-visit upon my return.
The exterior is very unique and modern (a little boxy for my tastes), and very much like the Selfridges building, is one you're sure not to miss.
Inside feels very special. Shelves upon shelves of volumes and editions of books in beautiful condition, give the impression that you're visiting a place where the great minds of The Midlands come to study, think, and indulge themselves.
You can easily get lost in this building as there are many levels and floors offering different distractions and interesting things - the secret gardens and roof terraces serve up stunning views of Birmingham and places to sit quietly and ponder. Be sure to visit the top floor where you will find the Shakespeare room - a room dedicated to the great playwright himself. On the bottom floor you will find all of your entertainment needs catered for - DVDs, CDs etc.
The Library of Birmingham is more than just a library. It's a tourist attraction, museum of sorts, and generally a great addition to the city of Birmingham.
I. H.
Great viewing gallery and secret garden
F. C.
Undoubtedly the best place in Birmingham. Majestic, modern and kitschy. I have always left this place wanting to stay a little longer. The terrace offers a lovely view of the skyline.
J. M.
Great building, great to study in, handy access to the internet or the latest magazines and useful if you need to borrow a book. The council needs to put some me money 💵 n as the opening hours are terrible, and the expensive cafe just won't cover it.
S. J.
Exceptional large space & great environment
a. r.
Great chilled vibe from the library
C.
Best library in brum hands town! huge loads of floors loads of room and excellent for working and focusing or even reading in peace. Cafe's and food available downstairs too.
H. P.
Lovely views and friendly staff. Recommend going
S. P. C.
I used to 'live' here b4 they changed the hours. Every Sunday I would get up and head there for 2 hours b4 walking along Broad St picking up broken jewellery which people had dropped hours earlier. Then i'd walk to our Church in a hotel down the road. The Library used to be a treat meeting place where we had a choice of comfortable seats, internet access, films, newspapers and lots of books. Open till late every night it was somewhere warm, cosy, inviting. Changes the hours have messed up a lot of routines. No Sunday opening, late starts and early closing has changed many lives. Hopefully we will get our hours back.
M. K.
Amazing building with beautiful view and very appreciate for the prayer room. But something needs to be done in regards to the ridiculous opening hours and lack of Sports and Fitness resources (Sport student ) it is such a big let down.
S. P.
Free entry. Whole view of city from different level observation decks. Especially 9th floor purely observation purpose room is provided with information about the places around the library. 7th floor secret garden area provide rest of the view which we missed in the 9th floor.
H. M.
Really beautiful & unique architecture. Good for kids to learn new things and explore. Lift system needs improving. Good view of Birmingham from top floor.
M. M.
I absolutely HATE the new opening times, am sure many people including students like myself can agree. Please change it back to the old times or at least bring back the weekend times. Overall its a beautiful and wonderful place to study with kind and willing to help staff.
N. N.
Beautiful building absolutely stunning great for books reading or working on your laptop. There's even a secret garden on the roof. U can see the whole of birmingham its amazing
R. M.
The library is a fabulous resource and the staff are generally friendly and helpful. However when I tried to find a new acquisition of arrangements of music from Asia, the librarian who I approached for help said Good luck with that, and It'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
A. D.
Great library for long stay. How ever this can get very irritating if you're only there for shot trips, not much directions to where stuff is (e.g The computers) and the staff were quite moody
P. U.
Easily accessible to each level. Clear signposts, the reference section staff on level 4 are particularly helpful. There is a wide range of publications such as newspapers📰 going back into the 19th century. These are available on microfiche. Well worth a visit and a coffee is on the ground floor.☕
L. P.
Wonderful building. Must visit! There are 3 view points. In my opinion the middle is the best. Great views!
L. Z.
Free entry, futuristic design, a great collection of books, panoramic terrace with a fascinating garden, lots of lights. It's really worth taking a walk in it.
Y. V.
Excellent working environment, and feels quite comfortable. Not sure of the exact figure, but the thermostat is at just the right temperature. The only thing is that the toilets are quite hard to find.
R. G.
A wonderful design with gardens on 2 levels offering good views over the city. Take the escalators up to the 3rd floor and admire the fantastic circular design.
T. G.
Mad place. Bare books to dive into. Smells like some peng ting coffee. Banged my elbow in a locker when i was trying to get of it. The gardens are pretty mad but went on rainy day so my sleeves got wet (must point out nothing else did) .
To conclude great place needs to baby proof a little bit.
L. t. S.
Amazing,,and wonderfull
C. H.
I worked here for over five years. It is more than a building with books and computers. The Library of Birmingham has the finest staff any library service could hope for. They are dedicated, often underappreciated and a shining example of the best that Birmngham has to offer. It is worth mentioning that the Business and IP Centre on level 3 is the largest source of FREE business information in the country.
O. M. B.
Beautiful place. The staff was very friendly.
S. Y.
On the whole a great space but the cracks are beginning to show, quite literally, with a leaking roof, buckets placed underneath near computer area on 2nd floor. I booked a computer and was abt 8 mins late due to trrain delays and my reservation got cancelled!! Ridiculous! Please inform users on the website when booking of this practice. Also the computers block me from accessing authentic websites like Cambridge online learning. Waste of an entire morning. When I approached staff, was told there was nothing they could do abt it!
D. G.
Unfortunately the area was under construction the time I was there. I couldn't enter the building but the outside and facade was astonishing.
S. R.
I was awed by the size of this library. Especially places for people to use their laptop. The architecture is really beautiful and I can easily spend hours there.
R. R. F.
Beautiful library with wonderful staff and books
A. B.
Still good and such an iconic building
H. K.
Its a ok library, not a lot of books despite the size of it. There should be a direct number to call for a member of staff if people are unable to go to the reception desk. There was a lady who was sitting near me shouting aggressively on her phone and telling others who were whispering to shut the f*** up because she was having a private conversation on her phone!!! This is unacceptable and has put me off this library due to one bad person who has made the experience unbearable.
K. A.
On your first visit you may end up just admiring the building and the environment.
T. B.
Spectacular views! It was a rainy day but it was worth a visit, will be back when the sun is out! Recommend to view the Shakespeare Memorial Room!
M. H.
Poor stock levels. Service a little lax. 4 in the party but repeatedly only given 3 covers.
M. H.
It was beautiful, the chairs are so comfortable, and the outside terrace view was amazing. Even the interior is far better than any library I've seen so far.
A. E.
Great library but sadly the opening hours of the £189 million library are now 40 hours per week instead of the previous 73 hours per week. All because how foolish Birmingham City Council have been.
G. S.
Amazing building and loads of stuff to do. Just WoW!
M. B.
As soon as I walked in and went up the first escalator I was greeted by a sight that made my heart flutter, truth be told I felt like Belle when she first saw the beasts library!! Love at first sight
M. P.
So inspiring to research here
T. H.
Even delivering at night, in and out, bobs your uncle!
t. s.
Lovely place to just sit and watch the world go by
P. J.
Didn't go in
K. Y. C.
Great Chinese art exhibition on between March and May at the gallery. All work based upon collaboration between Chinese community, Chinese classics and the library.
W. A. T.
Wonderful place to find the book of your interest and read. Got the music practice room with a digital piano in the B2 level, which is for a price.
F.
Good place to do school or college coursework. Almost always silent and has a very cozy environment with plenty of books to choose from.
F.
Gardens not open
T. O.
Centrally located library building for use by the residents of Birmingham and visitors to this great city. It shares its space with the Rep theatre and the BrassHouse language centre. It is run by the Library of Birmingham Trust.
M. W.
Re-visited and had a great time, super to see it opening back up again.
S. S.
Plenty of books for all tastes. Public access to computers and internet. Comfy armchairs for rest and an absolutely splendid view deom the terraces/balconies/landings.
S.
Such a big facility to be closing that early!
What a shame looks more like a learning center to me nowadays. There might as well just changed their name! and that henchman with the 'hat' whose always On people's faces like a (bouncer in the club)
J. C.
Great place to spend a day, by yourself or with a family
K. D.
You can get some great views from the top of Birmingham and it is nice to just sit on the secret roof gardens when its sunny for a bit of fresh air after using their computers for a while.
a. h.
1.not enough siting places to work especially with electric access, 2 the entry doors do not work properly.3 many flute fire alarms, 4 after 5 years they have to spent lots of money to change the outside decoration because it will get rust.4 they close the library without notice.
m. p.
Incredible facility, with no expense spared. Shame the council had no follow through. Understaffed, and awful opening and closing times. Given full support, it could be the best of its kind in the country.
J. N.
Helpful and welcoming staff. Thanks.
S. R.
Classic crazy style!
K. G.
Awesome and enjoyable. Layouts could be better defined and ease of literature location could be improved but a beacon of culture and education for Birmingham.
N. O.
Best place in world to read, research and think of the next world inventions and innovations.
J. C. E.
Birmingham’s new library, composed of a stack of four rectangular blocks (offset to create terraces), makes an ultramodern first impression. The façade nods to the city’s jewelry quarter with a pattern of 5,357 metal rings. One of its treasures is the more traditional wood-paneled Shakespeare Memorial Room. Originally built in 1882, it was painstakingly reassembled on the top floor to house the library’s Shakespeare collection, which includes copies of the Bard’s first editions. The Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai was on hand to officially open the library in September 2013. Open daily.
U. V.
Amazing place. Do not miss the top floor and rooftop.
Y. A.
It's ok
i. w.
The library is very good ☺
C. W.
Amazing building, great facilities. Usually quite busy. Would be good if the open hours were longer. 5pm is too early.
S. T. (. G. G.
Very Impressive site. With many useful items of interest, and lots of media and books. It is good to go to the top of the structure, located on the 9th Floor.
Well worth a visit while visiting Birmingham.
Regards

Wonderful place, the building blends both old & new together in harmony to create a space that engulfs your mind. Fantastic resource and a wonderful addition to the city
D. U.
Just amazingly beautiful place and must visit if you come to Birmingham, what an amazing view from secret garden...Shakespeare memory place and 270 degree view of the whole city....
J. S.
Ver nice decor but I liked the old one! It was easier to get to, being more central and it seemed a lot bigger TBH, with more books.
M. M.
Stunning architectural space, busy with students and public and tourists, weirdly short opening hours.
M. B.
Great place to look round and chill love the secret garden on the outside brilliant view of the city

J. D.
Lovely library! great selection of books of course but with so much more!
Brilliant architecture too!
H. F.
Great place to go however it is massively understaffed, there is a lack of seating, and it closes really early in comparison to the times it used to close. It's worth a visit however I'm giving it Four stars.
A. A.
Lovely and modern library and is very welcoming and it is a pleasure to spend time in there. Check out the Shakespeare room - not to be missed.
E. T.
Great place to study and superb views over the city. Nice chill out areas and a good cafe

Worth visiting even as a tourist. The roof gardens offer nice view and nice places to sit down for few minutes.
D. s.
Good library. Has plenty of books, loads of space and if you need plugs for your laptop, go to the second floor.
j. g.
The best I saw in birmingham, if you like books, if not the views are great. Its a pity that it was windy and the terrace were close
E. M.
Beautiful building with an interesting and informative Shakespeare exhibit and collection on the top floor.

Thank you so much to Phil, I was the absolute customer from hell trying to print off an email attachment and I messed it up in every way several times but Phil did everything he could possibly have done to help even after I rudely answered a phone call while taking to him. This is what I call fantastic customer service!

For the moment it's close but can offer you most amazing views to the city
