Reviews of London - Hatchards - Piccadilly
O. S.
Book after book after book - Hatchards' large selection of books stretches across beautiful wooden shelves and boards. What a feeling to walk through this shop with books as far as the eye can see.
E.
An Exquisite bookstore appointed by HMH Royal family’s bookshelves. Particularly love the collection of history, nature and small section on manners/family life for kids, animals. The art of books, as a book and library lover, don’t miss it as my favourite bookstore.
S. h.
Beautiful book shop that is way way way bigger than you think. Lots of floors. Staff are also delightful. Great atmosphere. Great variety.
Y. S.
Multi-storey amazing book store. Can spend a whole afternoon here.
M. T.
A very rich choice of books, topics. The bookstore is on 5 floors and has everything you might be looking for + it is very pretty inside. A truly inspiring experience 😊
A. L.
Yes, it’s that good. There are a number of famous old bookstores in London, but this place seems to have….everything. I called looking for two popular books right before Christmas; they had both and held them at the cash register for me. It’s also just a beautiful store: lots of wood, chairs for shoppers. That’s a big one for me. Stop in !
C. Y. C.
There are 4 floors of books, I didn't want to leave! Absolutely incredible book shop☺️The top of the book shop is so surprised
A. N.
This has got to be London's classiest bookshop - with great choices in a lovely atmosphere of calm right on Piccadilly.
I. Z.
I searched 'bookstore' on Google maps and found this treasure. First I thought it was a small shop but was amazed to find out it covers about 4 floors of books (including a basement).
There are (limited) seating areas for you to enjoy a quick browse or an extensive peruse, where I had the chance the relax and read some excerpts of books I had interest in (even sitting on the stairs).
They do have a wide range of topics here and there, categorised according to their type (e.g. Children's, hardback classics, European history), but it would have been helpful if there was a floor guide telling you what to expect on each landing. There is a lift however, to easily navigate up and down.
I've never heard of this venue before but I'm glad I found it; it's easy to get to and quiet, like a library
M. B.
Beautiful incredible bookshop right in the heart of London. A must go for every books lover.
M. S.
Best big book store in London now 5hat Foyles has dropped behind. Good atmosphere and good range/stock. Enjoy! 😊👍
A. W.
Lovely authentic shop, browsing around each floor at the books. Went in to buy one, came out having bought 4. Shall return. Annie Williams
L. B.
Book shops are heaven for me. But this one is BLISS, PURE BLISS. You need a whole day just to see the whole place. Wonderful collections, clearly labelled. What is amazing is that the sales people ACTUALLY know about books. They have heard about authors, titles. Sadly many bookshop helpers seem illiterate or plain disinterested. I was asking a girl for Clarissa Pinkola Estes' book " The Women Who Run With Wolves" ( a brilliant read if you like independent thought ). A passing salesperson, Francis ( ??? ), told me the floor and section where it would be found and it WAS there. I am completely charmed!
Shakespeare, Borges, Asterix, Angie Sage, Enid Blyton, Upanishads, Cartoons, pulp fiction, Author of "Fly by Night" the list is endless. My personal bookshelf looks like it belongs to a person with multiple personalities! This book shop caters to ALL of them.
This is an independent bookshop. It's my dearest wish that their tribe flourish. The titles, the staff not to forget their exquisite architecture ( one can sprawl on their staircase and read and read, were it not a bookshop ! ), their gift wrapping and the WHOLE ambience makes it certain that this shop will thrive. Want to return again and again and again.
T. W.
Wow! I super love this bookshop. Certainly feels like you are traveling back in time (the overall architecture). You can drown yourself in so many books, glorious books!
I. M. M.
Beautiful site. I was eager to discover it. Full of beautiful books. Being the oldest bookshop in UK, makes it even more interesting.Staff very nice and helpful
F.
Great bookshop, incredibly wide selection and friendly staff
A. G.
Ohhhh it's a lovely bookshop, you can just stay there and be lost with books
S. R.
All my bookshop dreams in one, such a diverse selection, super helpful and friendly staff
N. M.
There is a lift to all floors here! The lift entrance however is very narrow so beware. Not entirely sure if there is a cafe here. The bookshop is actually quite medium in size.
However I absolutely loved it in here so I'm giving it 4 stars just because it's so pretty.
j. g.
Hatchards Piccadilly is a hidden cavern for specialist books and book lovers. A more specialised collection of in print books which seems curated when compared to their parent company only a few meters further down Piccadilly at Waterstones. If you are looking to source a specialist book and in need of 1 to 1 assistance (social distancing permitting). I would recommend this branch.
D. H.
Can someone lock me in this bookstore for a month? so so so many books! Wow! the place smells smart. one can "hear" the many stories inviting you in.
A. K.
Hatchards is a historic bookstore that is mentioned in many historical novels. It is compact, neatly organized, and lovely inside. In spite of its size, there is a huge selection of books. It's worth a visit.
L. R.
Really nice bookshop. I am a big fan of independent shops. I was impressed.
C. F.
Wonderful, historical, and full of really kind and helpful booksellers! Really enjoyed my experience there!
T. W.
Wonderful bookstore. Very competent staff and a vast variety of books.
R. R.
Very good and big
Might not have every book obviously, but they will indicate other locations to find it
G. B.
The most fantastic and the oldest bookshop in London. Worth visiting even just to walk around it!
M. R. B.
I stumbled into this bookstore walking around Piccadilly and I'm so glad I did.
Well lit, smartly arranged, well stocked bookstore.
They have brilliant quotes titling the round book stalls.
The interior is beautiful, plants adorn the walls and staircase and give the whole space a very welcoming vibe.
B. t.
HUGE selection of books, very easy to find books you need and the staff are welcoming and very helpful.
s. b.
One of the most beautiful bookshops I've ever been to!! Makes every book lovers' heart race :)
L. A.
A beautiful store. Lots to choose from. Love the staircase. Staff friendly and helpful.
S. P.
Nice bookstore where you can escape a bit from the buzy streets. Friendly staff.
M. K.
My go to book shop especially for children's books, they still offer gift wrap you just need to ask.
There's a reason why Hatchards has Royal Crest's above the entrance it's favoured by HRH and offers old school service. This is an Extra Special Book Store. Highly recommend.
A. W.
London's oldest bookstore, having been founded in 1797. It is what you expect a bookstore to be. Charming, with great service!
J. R.
Amazing bookshop. Much bigger than you expect from the street. Great selection, well organised, superb staff and a pleasure to visit.
C. C.
Do you need a book? Surely you can find it here!!! Huge bookshop in the centre of London. It’s the oldest bookshop in Britain apparently! You can see that from the carpet on the stairs but all the rest is very...commercial!
M. A.
Love this bookstore. Many titles available you can also find many signed copies. Worth a visit
S. A. H.
This was one of the highlights of my trip to London. Gorgeous bookstore + you can find almost anything!
P. U.
Excellent selection of books,in a atmospheric store.
K. M. S.
A delightful bookstore with several levels of books. Worth popping in and picking out a new favorite.
R. K.
Great bookshop with a vast selection of books and authors! Highly recommended. Staff is very friendly, too.
N. B. B.
Big book selection in a historic setting. Well informed staff who are eager to guide you. Four floors of books. If you can't find something here that piques your interest your not trying. A pleasant area of London for strolling and popping in shopping.
R. P. B.
The lovely shop that Mrs Dalloway visìted in the eponymous book. Worth a visit for that reason alone. It helps that it has a quality atmosphere with staff who are consistently courteous, knowledgeable and helpful.
K. F.
Fabulous - very well stocked book shop
K. C. L.
Step inside and you're lost in a world of books. A very beautiful place to visit and it is the oldest bookstore in London
A. C.
Best bookstore I have ever visited. I could literally live in here
J. H. D.
A great bookshop. Worth a look!
D. B.
Great old bookshop with wide selection of books. It has also some antique books and new signed books.
G. P.
Undeniably the classiest bookshop in London with a long pedigree, patronised by Royality and first-class knowledgeable staff and assistance !!
P. J.
Amazing book store. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Like stepping back into Dickension London with an eye watering selection of books.
J. K.
There are 4 floors of books, I didn't want to leave! So good, but be sure to have enough time to see everything
g.
Quaint bookshop, now part of the Waterstones Group. It appears to retain that old-world charm, even the green-grey look to the shop and the carpeting hints to this. Sadly, unlike Foyles, another excellent London, there are no seats for weak-kneed, back sufferers, physically frail buyers wanting to browse for longer than 5 minutes..all seats have disappeared even before the pandemic set in. Friendly, helpful staff.
A. N.
Amazing bookstore that spreads on 4 floors and basement
J. B.
A really charming, nostalgic place - like book shops of old. But with a huge, bang up to date selection and terrific, knowledgeable service.
E. D.
Great book selection and friendly helpful staff
R. H.
Olde worlde shoppe on several floors. Go in and lose a few hours! Wonderful!
b. s.
Great atmosphere and plenty of books from different genres, though some more seating may help make it even better.
O. S.
A quintessentially, English book store.
v. g.
I love this place! It is beautiful and there is so much to choose from. Can be a bit pricey depending on what you are looking for, but still highly recommend. Looking forward spending a lot time (and money) in here.
A. d. B.
Thank you for helping me find dad a gift. A great selectin of autographed books.
A. w.
Amazing selection, good prices, largest history section I've ever seen.
P. H.
Went to book signing event. Great shop with knowledgeable staff
L. F.
My favourite bookshop in London. The historic staircase in the middle is breathtaking and you can really feel the history of the building. They have a huge selection of books, very well organised with amazing staff. They also have plenty of signed copies of different books if that is your sort of thing.
D. K.
Amazing old bookstore that has kept up with the times. The staff is super friendly and helpful. It has all the various books you would require and if not available nearly everything can be ordered. The store is very beautiful and very quiet, especially for its location in the centre of London. I would recommend going here, even if you would just love to have look around or browse for inspiration. If you are ever near, it is a must visit!
C. Y.
The oldest bookstore in London built in 1797!
B. D.
As per usual, Hachards met my reading needs entirely. I look forward to my next visit.
V. F.
By far the best book store in London!
T. P.
Super friendly staff, beautiful interiors and great diversity of books. Couldn’t recommend more!
J. K.
Possibly the best bookshop in the world, just the selection of books is incredible!
A. H.
Great books store. Everything they have in there is very useful
A. B.
One of the finest book shops I have ever been in. Super friendly and helpful staff as well
S. A.
Hatchards is London’s oldest bookshop, having been established in 1797 by John Hatchard. Its customers have been the literary, political, artistic and social lions of their day. Many things have changed but the essence of the place remains the same and is unchangeable. Love it must visit 😊
M. G.
Lovely bookstore, antique feel, cozy atmosphere, with many first editions and a lot of signed copies, which is really great!
B. N.
I always loved reading books and this place has lots of them! There are so many titles available and the staff are so friendly. Although this bookstore is one of the oldest in London, it's improving each and every year. This is one of my favourite places in London!
S. D. W.
Professional staff. All sections clearly marked. Could not find the lift as having issues using staircase
A. O.
Lovely shop with some excellent first editions and signed copies. Could spend hours in here. Unfortunately my recent visit was ruined by a member of staff (male, longish hair) who rudely barged into me whilst frantically stomping around the store (no apology), whilst patronisingly barking at a very lovely and helpful shop assistant. Seems like a supervisor whose "power" has gone to his head.
k.
I like the selection of books however it is quite difficult to find what you're looking for because of layout that doesn't really make sense
M. D.
Still one of London's best bookshops selling a wonderful range of books. Very nice collectible (first, signed and early editions) section. In spite of being taken over by Waterstones, it does not yet appear to have been infected with the very strange selection that Waterstones tends to now have on display at most of their London branches.
R. M.
Coziest bookshop there ever was, with a great and comprehensive selection. Fantastic seating for browsers (this is something I look for in a bookshop - it says that you're welcome to spend time and discover the books on offer, and offers an opportunity to make the right decision by letting you read a few (or not so few) pages in comfort. Do not miss out the cozy leather settee in the mystery section. Excellent service, and smart gift wrapping. Allot several hours for each visit.
F. S.
Brilliant bookshop, staff really helpful.
L. B.
A really brilliant bookshop - so many books, so many helpful staff. One of the oldest, if not the oldest in London. We treated our daughter to a year's subscription and she gets sent a book each month based on the information she gave them about her likes. Brilliant!!
m. s.
Wonderful bookshop. Messaged a friend who was so jealous as its one of his favourite places in the world!
G. W.
One of the best bookstores in the area. There's nothing you won't be able to find here. The only thing I found disappointing about my visit was that the store is, rather than being truly independent, a subsidiary of Waterstones. The latter seems to have appropriated a number of historical bookstores in Britain and Ireland; I have reviewed a similar such store in Dublin. All the same, you won't find a better bookstore on Piccadilly.
G. J.
A great historical place to buy books.
Several floors offering a great choice.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Not as big as Waterstones down the road but great none the less.
You get a sense of the age of the store when inside.
Have been there many times and will continue to return.
Highly recommended.
P. C.
A wonderful old school bookstore. The staff have been there for years, know their books, and a delight to talk to. The stock is heavy on classics, so you may need to go down the road to Waterstones if that's not you, but don't deny yourself at least an hour in Hatchards.
P.
Great library, I first came as a tourist but I stayed more time than expected. :-)
D. N.
A must see book shop when in London! This is the oldest bookshop in the UK, it’s been there since 1797 so they know a thing or two about selling books! The customer service is always great, the book curation & recommendations are very well informed & it still maintains the original feel & interior of an old world book shop.
G. T.
Huge bookstore, long history. Helpful and patient staff. Excellent selection!
C. L.
The best bookstore in London. The staff is always welcoming, and the selection is hard to beat. Great place to shop if you are tired of the big box retailer type bookstores that have the same of everything. A unique assortment here.
M. J. B.
In my view, the best English-language bookstore in the world. Great taste. Great style. The unexpected and the essential. Buy a book, go next door to Fortnum's, order a pot of tea and read with your cuppa. Bliss.
S. H.
My favourite bookshop among all I have visited around the world - full of tantalising diversity. My purchasing is limited only by budget and airline check-in allowance. Most often I come away with a first edition signed by its (British only) author. Some older first editions also offered - at a price.
J. B.
Full disclosure, it's a Waterstones. But it's still worth a visit. It really feels like a very old bookstore. Narrow hallways lead into wider spaces with a variety of books. The staircase to the upper level helps to give it a really old world atmosphere. The staff is fantastic and were great to chat with. I got a great book here that I can't find back in Canada. If you are into books, check this location out.
J. H.
Great bookstore. Tons of books, multiple floors. I always stop in whenever in London (usually right after I leave Fortnum and Mason which is next door). If you like books, don’t miss it (the bookstore also has a very nice stamp of approval......).
W. L.
London's oldest bookshop, and it is still going strong. With a fine selection of books with both older classics and brand new ones, helpful staff and the most gorgeous interior, the store is worth visiting just for the experience
C. N.
Beautiful bookstore with a huge and well organized selection of books (four floors, I think) -- the only place in London I've been able to find two books I've been looking for over the past couple months. There's also an incredible selection on art on the highest level and children / teen books -- so something for everyone!
A. J. K.
Historical bookshop
Was very quiet and peaceful
Highly recommend to the travelers who love books
L. P.
What a amazing bookshop in the centre of London. Real gem of beautiful past for everyone who still know how to open a book 📚
L. R.
Amazing book store! Great variety and the staff is very helpful and has lots of great recommendations. Charming inside. The moment you walk in you want to explore everything and sit down and start reading...
S. D.
We absolutely love the place, books everywhere!
O.
A little pricey but an excellent bookshop
We go when we are due a treat!
F. W.
One of the world's best book stores. One could get completely lost browsing through their layered collections and not be found for months! Truly a bibliophile's best delight and the staff are also formidable and very helpful!
S. J.
Pretty big bookstore! I was told this is the oldest bookstore in London. All the employees are very knowledgeable and give great recommendations depending on your interest! Has an older architecture and they maintained it really well.
FYI, Waterstone bookstore is 2min walk from there and is the biggest bookstore in Europe. It is a bit more modern looking. I personally like Hatchards better because it has a more homey, book reading promoting vibe
B. C.
I could have spent all day in this bookstore. The store is HUGE and has a great collection of books you don't see every day. (Take that with a grain of salt... I'm an American, so I might be wrong. All British book stores might be like this, but I doubt it)
My favorite discoveries in this store:
1. The cool architecture of the building
2. The Eland book collection in the basement. I even bought a few, and I'll buy more.
3. The complete works of P.G. Wodehouse and the complete works of Agatha Christie on side-by-side shelves. What more could an American tourist want?!
K. K.
I call this place heaven. Books everywhere! Really cool collection, we were so happy to end up here having just moved to Poland and not being able to find english books anywhere. We definitely stocked up and the workers there were so engaging!
P. a. S. L. “.
always a pleasure, how staff have an encyclopedia of book titles in their heads I dont know. I found your always pointed in the right direction and if they don't know of a book you're looking for then they're most helpful to better your chances of getting that book. I bought the "INDIA Cookbook" which was actually cheaper than buying it online. I've also bought "teach yourself French", both products are great, not that they made them but they're in perfect condition and the service is also great as I said earlier.
G. H.
Brilliant range of books of all kinds and genres across multiple floors. Well-lit, very well cared-for, and also well-decorated with soft carpets and multiple chairs and sofas for browsing and reading in. My only criticism is that some sections seemed fairly limited - particularly the manga and graphic novel sections could be expanded.
M. N.
If you love books your are going to fall in love with this bookshop from the second you walk in. Incredibly large selection to peruse through whilst marveling at quotes and quips by authors on each island. The perfect place to just get lost in literature and forget that it's on one of London's busiest thoroughfares.
S. S.
Steeped in tradition, it's a heaven for book buffs. The pervading scent of fresh bookprint is a wonderful feature. A little crammed on account of the location and need to store inventory. Very knowledgeable staff too.
Love the fact it hasn't followed the ghastly trend of other booksellers that have mutated into cafes and grocery/toy/souvenir stores.
L. A.
Awesome selection of books just a shame I couldn't buy more than one as lacked room in my suitcase. Will definitely visit again next time I'm in London.
P. H.
Huge selection of books, and I came back buying more than expected. The biggest collection of Jeeves and Wooster I’ve seen in years! Also, good crime section!
Wonderful bookshop, and lovely staff
B. T.
Excellent book shop, which retains some of the attributes of the ancient shop which it replaced. A very relaxed environment to browse for your book, seek advice from staff, and enjoy coffee on the 5th floor. Love it!
m. b.
One of the best book stores in London
A. G.
My favourite bookshop. Huge selection and very helpful service
D. S.
This is an absolute must for book-lovers! There are four floors of books in nearly every subject once could imagine. The staff is very knowledgeable regarding their inventory and there are many places throughout the store where you can plop down with a book and while away the hours. It's a kindred spirit of Blackwell's in Oxford.
B. K.
This is the oldest and the best bookstore in Britain. The staff here are so friendly especially the American fella and the blonde girl. I thoroughly enjoy walking up and down the stairs in this shop. I find it impossible to walk by and not say hello to the amazing staff in this store.
C. T.
Cannot praise it enough even though it was refurbished back in the 1990s and bought by Waterstones. Still has some unique book choices in a compact shop in alphabetical order (I like it) and is one of the last remaining old bookstores L-O-N-D-O-N
p. g.
Must for any London visit.
Amazing bookshop to wander around.
H. M.
Best book store in London
N.
A huge bookstore thriving in the middle of the city. Helpful staff. Excellent collection of books and author signed books. It is impressive to say the least. Would take 2 hours to cover all sections.
N. P.
In this day and age of e-books and e-readers, this is an 18th century bookstore that's still around selling actual books. I would visit this place just for the history. Large store on multiple floors with thousands of titles. Well organised with great selection.
R. S.
An old fashioned bookstore with all the current as well as old classics are in hand here. If you are looking for the history of London they have excellent books on the city.
J. F.
Imagine an old library, with all those shelves inviting you to explore them. That's how I felt when I entered Hatchards for the first time. A beautiful place. With Waterstones just a few meters away, you have a unique opportunity to see two different styles of book stores, both with thousands of books that you want to read
B. G.
Truly scrumptious bookshop. Just want to live there.
j. M.
I never fail to visit Hatchards on Piccadilly when I am in London. If I have the time I make more than one visit. Hatchards is one of my favorite bookstores in the world (with City Lights in San Francisco and Compagnie in Paris). This London institution has personality and the atmosphere of a real bookstore for people who love books, not a supermarket. When you enter the store, you are faced with the staff's selection of recent books (some of the copies signed by the authors. I always leave the store with a few of them. It is easy to spend a couple of hours between the different sections, more difficult to discard the books that I am less interested in. I never left empty handed. Usually, I come determined not to buy more books than I can read and leave the store with all the books I can carry.
G. S.
I haven't been here before but it is a very interesting collection of books in store. Many books caught my eye that I haven't seen in other bookshops. I will return.
J. H.
It is a very cosy medium sized bookshop on several floors on Piccadilly with a good variety of recently published books. It is also a good place to find signed editions and copies of older significant works.
L. M.
Great place with the books placed to give plenty of interest while maintaining a pleasant pace of walking around. Fantastic books, will definitely go back, next time I'll give myself more time.
H. G.
Bought my first British novel “the restaurant of the end of the Universe” over here, very old style bookstore which is fantastic, only pity is the front desk dude was saying”u picked a really nice one” to everyone checked out except me!! I’m worry about my taste now.
L. S.
This place has so rich selection of books, I really enjoyed it! A perfect place to choose any book you like!
T. C.
One of kind bookstore still has a feel of an independent. Wonderful to just wonders round the huge selection of book. Staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
S. M.
Favourite bookshop in London! You’ll find many signed copies which make an excellent gift.
J. L.
Old century bookstore vibe. Has a lot and great selection of books.
A. R.
One of my favorite bookstores with a great selection of books. I often get my limited edition and signed copies from this historic bookstore.
Highly recommended.
L. M.
Sadly Hatchards is now owned by Waterstones but it has still managed to retain some of its uniqueness. It's the place to go for signed books and it has a section of second hand books (mainly first editions) now on the ground floor. Stocks Legendre and a good selection of Jewellery books - this reflects our interests only, there is much much more over all the floors!
M. M.
Too many books too little time, an institution on piccadilly
L. O.
A delightful little bookstore. Originally founded in 1797, this was one of London's first bookshops. The staff are wonderfully polite, and there's real a sense of the old world charm about this store. If you're looking for a new book, do check out Hatchard's in Piccadilly.
N. H.
I love bookstores and could spend hours in one. This one was great!
S. M.
Floor after floor of fantastic books. This shop is owned by Waterstones and if you are familiar with the Waterstones style you will recognise it here. However as holders of the Royal Warrant, many writer choose to launch here and there is an excellent selection of signed and rare copies which you would not find elsewhere. Polite and knowledgable staff are also on hand to assist with choices or make suggestions.
M. C.
Small book shop on Picadilly that dates back to the 1800s. Tends to be quite busy on the weekends. In reality, the feel of this bookshop is no different from the Waterstones down the road. As a bookshop, this place is fine- but there is nothing really unique about it.
金.
Great bookshop with history, staffs are helpful if you want to find any book. Might be crowded at the cashier, but inside its a good quiet place for books
M. T.
If you love books, you will love this place. I can spend hours here exploring from the new to very old limited editions books. This bookshop has something for everyone.
S. A.
Thìs is London's oldest bookshop. It was often frequented by Charles Dickens! It has a beautiful interior and a good selection of books. The staff are knowledgeable and always ready to help. I highly reccomend Hatchards!
T. M.
One of the most beautiful bookshops in the world. A wide range of choice that covers new borns to the elderly. The setting is special and the service is always prompt and respectful.
S. W.
Wonderful bookstore! Excellent ambiance, amazing selection, unique editions of beloved books. Could spend all day here!
S. F.
My favourite bookstore in the world such unique collections, and what a true old style book store should feel like. A must visit on every trip to London!
S. E.
A diamond in the rough! A peaceful get away from the busy streets of London, with a vast variety of book for all walks of life.
Everytime I'm in London I spend hours in this bookstore.

S. P.

L. N.
Beautiful store, with many stories of books!
A. M.
I bought the book from this place and i returned it after 6 days.
I finished the all book and I did return it because I want to buy another one and I will keep changing if I need a new book so I do not have to pay for the new one .
If the knowledge is better than money then it should be free.
I will used the 14 days return policy .
Thanks
K. S.
Amazing from the moment you walk in to when you walk out. It is a place out of a J K Rowling novel - full of history and elegance. When you walk in you’re met by a staircase that leads to one floor down, but many floors up. Each floor I request that you peruse at your own leisure, as that is something you need time for.
Hatchards, the oldest bookshop in the UK, has an impressive three royal warrants. The maximum one can hold. The bookshop is next to Fortnum & Mason, which holds two royal warrants; one from Her Majesty the Queen and one from HRH the Prince of Wales. One may pop in after their grocery shopping to purchase a nice cookbook to inspire them.
Hatchards provides signed copies of books, those signed have a small elegant symbol to signal it being signed. The price of the signed copy? The same as if it was not signed, the RRP or the book. That is something I was impressed by.
Hatchards offer a book wrapping service, which I must say with the ribbon makes a gift look beautiful and thoughtful.
The floor at the top is full of amazing books. Some books on the floor are not as portable as one would expect. But I’m sure the members of staff would have a unique experience wrapping a book of that size.
L. M.
The seating outside and the offer of s free coffee when you buy s book lured me in. Once I was in that's it say bye bye to any plans. The books, gift cards and amazing stock of souvineirs and stationary will take up your time now. I spent at least half an hour within 3 metres of the door perusing the amazing books, adult colouring books, diaries, listographs, wrapping paper and much more. It's s great place well worth having a look into - there is domething to appeal to everyone in here. I went to the one in Euston station!

Friendly staff , fantastic atmosphere.
D. O.
Quiet and a great range of books not available elsewhere.
G. S.
Incredible collection of books...you could probably find most books you're looking for. Very friendly and helpful staff. Got some good reads!
O. W.
Huge selection of books, and at regular prices. Unique architecture inside too, nice authentic bookshop atmosphere!
J. L.
Great book shop, my only quibble is why do book shops always put children's books on the upper floors... Doesn't make sense to me.
W. B.
Much bigger than it seems, has all sorts of books for all ages.
A. R.
An extensive collection of books but some of staff can be offhand.
J. G.
An incredible bookstore. Over 4 levels of books with everythi g you can think of. Staff were most helpful with our inquiry. Highly recommend!
S. S.
Every bibliophile needs to make a pilgrimage to London's book shop. If you love books, you might need to reserve 3 hours of your schedule to visit Hatchard's. Come in with zero expectations, and explore this multi-story building. You're falling straight in to the rabbit hole here, you won't know what you're going to find.
M. K.
One of my favorite book shops to visit as they have a wide selection of books and some great gifts for all occasions. Such a nice place to visit and explore.
B. D.
Fantastic book shop, amazing experience, informative and helpful assistants, highly recommended, be prepared to spend a lot of time in this book shop and come out with many books.
J. M.
Gorgeous bookshop with beautiful prints. Great selection of art and fashion books among other things. I can spend hours there!
H. A.
One of the most beautiful and well-stocked bookshops I have seen in a while. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful, too.
M. G.
They seem to be able to find the books that the larger Waterstones down the road can't. Waterstones have several times now sent us down to Hatchards because they couldn't find their stock and the computer said Hatchards had it too.
W. H.
One of the best bookshops around! So many amazing books, beautifully stocked and all set in the heart of Picadilly.
E.
One of the best book shops in London. Knowledgeable staff. Fantastic selection. Can never come here and not buy something.

There are some places that make me happy I live in London. This is one of them. Finest staff I've had the pleasure of bothering about books. Would recommend for those that like books and patient staff
S. P.
Looove this book shop. Very big non fiction collection- we don't get much non fiction back where we're from so it's like heaven!! Staff are very very very knowledgeable too.

Quite a characterful bookshop in the heart of London.
The book wrapping service, which is free, gives you professional looking presents.
G. M.
Beautiful historical library, each visit is an experience.
H. G.
Bought my first British novel “the restaurant of the end of the Universe” over here, very old style bookstore which is fantastic, only pity is the front desk dude was saying”u picked a really nice one” to everyone checked out except me!! I’m worry about my taste now.
D. P.
Great place if you're a book lover or a bibliophile
H. K.
Old school bookstore. I find it the go to bookstore for serious books. Helpful staff.
P. K.
Quite a characterful bookshop in the heart of London.
The book wrapping service, which is free, gives you professional looking presents.
J. F.
Imagine an old library, with all those shelves inviting you to explore them. That's how I felt when I entered Hatchards for the first time. A beautiful place. With Waterstones just a few meters away, you have a unique opportunity to see two different styles of book stores, both with thousands of books that you want to read
D. L. (.
Great book shop. Also it has a big part dedicated to photography!
J. L.

Bookshops are increasingly rare sight on the streets of London, but even when the town was teeming with them, Hatchard's (incorporating Mowbray's Religious Booksellers) stood a breed apart. It is not just a bookshop, it is the bookshop: three Royal Warrant's, five floors and three-hundred-odd years worth of book selling excellence.
Such is its pedigree, authors rush to stack their signed copies on Hatchard's shelves. You might not find three for one deals and fifty percent reductions here, but you will find first editions inscribed by the likes of Stephen Fry, Michael Palin, Tony Blair, Boris Johnson, and the Duchess of Devonshire.
The staff are amiable as they are knowledgeable, and while the service may not be quite as personal as some shops in St James's, Hatchard's is one of the last places in London where one can stagger to the till, weighed down by prospective purchases and leave with a cheerful, "Could you put these on my account?"
All this, and you can even, whisper it now, collect points on your Waterstones card...
M. B.
Wonderful, charming, enormous old bookshop, with polite and extremely helpful staff. Recommended.
J. D.
An absolutely splendid bookshop. What more could anyone ever want?
Н. П.
Fantastic book shop!! Historical building and all the interiors and huge amount of books.
i. r.
Hatchard's Piccadilly is one of London's oldest bookshops, and although it is now part of the same group as the much larger and more comfortable Waterstones just down the street (they share the same databases) Hatchards is the place to be if you want to browse a particular topic or to purchase a signed copy.
D. L. (.
Great book shop. Also it has a big part dedicated to photography!
M. A.
This bookstore is awesome. There should be definitely more people visiting this place :)
E.
Oldest bookshop in the UK. Looks and feels a lot like a posh Waterstones inside sadly, but the customer service is excellent
E. H.
Booksellers founded in the 18th century hosting regular literary events and book signings.
M. S.
Great atmosphere lovely shop. Lots of books signed by the author and something for everyone.

Brilliant book shop. Excellent wide selection of books I've not seen in other bookshops.
F. D.
Great bookstore. Lots of choice. Signed copies of that's what you are after.
D. H.
You can feel the history in the bookshop, but it's got all the modern needs (elevator, for instance). Look for the limited run printings they do.
V. R.
There is no other bookstore with the charm and coziness of Hatchard's. Though it is now owned by Waterstone's the charm has not diminished.
R. C.
The art section is like chocolate on a silver spoon wonderful. I have bought many art books here great selection
R. W.
Lovely book store. Really hood displays and has a traditional feel. You could lose yourself in here for houts
T. A.
Best bookshop in London, my favourite. So cosy, traditional, good selection of books.
C. R.
Friendly and cosy bookstore with a much bigger selection thank you'd think, given the size of the frontage.
T. B.
The legendary Hatchard's is the oldest bookshop in the United Kingdom, and has been trading at its current Piccadilly premises since it was founded in 1797. It holds a royal warrant, and attracts the highest profile authors for signings. However, since it was bought by Waterstones in the late 1990s, its individuality has been lost. It has a good range of books available, but there's nothing about Hatchard's other than the name over the door which would make you think it was anything other than another branch of Waterstones.
D. S.
If you love books then you will love Hatchards. One of Britain's oldest bookshops. A must for all book lovers.
M. M.

London's oldest bookshop, Hatchards has been trading on Piccadilly since 1797. You walk in and are transported back to an earlier time. It's filled with nooks, crannys and old bookcases, groaning with everything from the latest thriller to obscure Latin texts. No bibliophile should miss it.
