Reviews of Fred Aldous Ltd
J. C.
I have mobility issues and so have a problem with the stairs and so can no longer go to the main level, which is the lower floor, Manchester branch. However I mentioned this to the staff on the ground floor level and asked if someone could get what I wanted for me. They were only to happy to help, so I gave the staff my list and the one who was helping went off downstairs, got everything I asked for and brought them up for me to buy.
I would have preferred to do it myself but it is just not practical for them to put in a lift despite the increase in space with the ground floor shop front. However the service I have received whenever I have gone in, no matter how small the list, has always been good as not once was I refused help.

I am not a regular customer but popped in to get a few things, including a large piece of card. As it was raining outside, a very kind member of staff put the card in a plastic cover and even fashioned a handle for me using tape, meaning that the card arrived home in pristine condition. A great example of excellent customer service, I absolutely did not expect her to go to such lengths but the extra effort made a real difference to me. Great shop!
L.
The kind of place you could walk into and easily lose an hour just browsing. They’re obv perfect for art supplies but I personally love them for indie-artist-made cards, or small gifts for people that’re a nightmare to buy for. Staff are always lovely!
H. R.
Fantastic shop, original gifts. Love the artwork that flows out into the street. A crafters and artists delight
a. s.
Really great craft shop with everything from speciality papers to craft kits, definitely on the more expensive side but the products are very high quality and shop very well presented so you find just whaat you needed
I. F.
Was after some balsa blocks for a craft activity with kids. Online store was easy to navigate, found just what I wanted, and order was completed in minutes. Items were promptly despatched and delivered much quicker than expected! Highly recommended!!
B. H.
Absolutely charming place! 3 floors of magic! ground floor is Gifts, home wear, stationary etc, the basement is full of things for every art form you can imagine. In the corner of the basement, you have some stairs that will take you to a lower floor with paper, canvas etc in. A DREAM!
E. R.
Just a great shop for makers, artists, thinkers, writers, quirky gifts and beautiful small design objects. The best in notebook's and sketchbooks and plenty of stock from plaster and paint to canvas and cane.

Fred Aldous is massive and an absolute dream for artists, stationery lovers and gift buyers. There's 3 floors of items and lots of helpful staff. Despite two of the floors being underground, there's loads of light and it's not cramped at all. Highly recommend checking out if you're visiting. Personally a huge fan of the sale section on the lowest floor, as often it holds very reasonably priced homewares from brands such as HAY and Norman.
h. a.
I love visiting their downstairs place 😍 so many options for DIY and arts and crafts! Perfect gifts can be found for the artists ☺
D. B.
I am an artist who struggles to find supplies locally. I usually work with materials that are hard to find online. YET, I found the oil pastels I use at the store! I managed to find everything I need from Fred’s. I don’t know why but this place inspires me every time I step in. The outdoor decorations are amazing! You definitely should stop by. Even if you just have a hobby, at this place you’ll discover more and you’ll learn more (note: they got great how-to books too, and yeeep! Good luck and stay inspired!)
N. K.
The place to go to for art and craft stuff. Sad to hear the current climate has forced a decrease in some items in their range but it is still a one-stop shop for most creative people and a great place to get the ideas flowing.
n. N.
Ordered online and received within two days. So so happy. Better than I expected. Packaged well. I'll be back for some more soon
K. A.
I am honestly overwhelmed every time I come here by the amount of art supplies they offer. Sure the ground floor is cute and has some quirky gift ideas, but the basement is the real gem! No matter what you are looking for, watercolour, oil, clay, sewing, textile work, books or any other art supplies you will most certainly find it here! The prices could be better, but you are after all supporting an independent business which is always great. Love it! The staff are okay, some better than others. But overall, I would always come back.
I. I.
Great for hobby craft just need more molds for candle making apart from that great shop and helpful staff
D. P.
Really great selection of arts and crafts materials. Got my daughter Copic markers from here. Nice helpful staff too.
K. M.
One of my all time favourite shops, I could spend hours here looking through all the beautiful stationery and books and the staff are always so helpful.
K. G.
Oh this place is heaven! Amazing and cute stationery, craft supplies, gifts... anything that comes to mind. It s just so lovely. Staff is lovely. Students get discounts. I'd honestly be there every day if it was possible.
M. M.
Love love love this place ❤
They have everything from crafts to paint and much much more.
Whether you are an at - home crafter, trying something new out or a professional artist this place have it.
A lovely atmosphere and the staff are always really helpful and knowledgeable.
One of my favourite places
J. G.
What a fabulous art shop. Has a very large variety of crafting materials.
b.
Perfect art shop. Worth a visit. 100x better than CassArt. I was astonished once I got here. Based on three floors, this unique art store has VIRTUALLY everything (which is quite a rare for any store in the UK) and really modern stationery/cards and items. I have to say I was impressed. The only problem is the ridiculous pricing - they do offer a 10% student discount but it is still a bit more pricy than CassArt on most items.
K. F.
Alladins cave of art stuff🤩...good prices, great staff, browse at your leisure, no hassle❤
J. D.
Love this craft store, they have everything you need from HAY notebooks to arts supplies. If you go downstairs you will find all the craft supplies, upstairs the more cool stuff like pins and plants.
J. C.
I could spend hours in here- everything you could need for art, crafts and plenty of good gift ideas too.
G. L.
A truly magical creative Alladin's cave. Venture downstairs and you'll find the best selection of art and craft supplies anywhere I've ever found. It's a veritable supermarket of drawing and painting materials, yarns, wools, kits for kids and beginners, books, and a thousand other products that might end up sparking a new project. I genuinely love this shop and have done for many years. Long may it continue.
R. A.
Brilliant place for your arts and craft materials
T. S.
Pricey but brilliant, and Aladdin's cave of art supplies.
C. V.
This is one of my favourite shops ever. If you are into drawing, painting or anything crafty you need to visit this shop, they have everything! Also pretty good shop for nice little gifts, there's plenty to wander around on the ground floor.
s. g.
Last time was years ago. But if you're at all crafty. This is an interesting place to be.
C. W.
Incredible colourful centre for arts and crafts ingredients. Eye poppingly lovely!
S. c.
An amazing selection of stationery and craft supplies, and their shop is something else! Their excellent website still keeps me well-supplied during lockdown.
D. F.
Always have just what I need to make my unique craft items. Check out my cutlery buckets made from resources bought from Fred Aldous Ltd!
C. C.
Not my usual kind if store but my Mrs who does Calligraphy etc absolutely loves this store. We visited twice in two days. Theres 3 floors (the third is like a drop down really) but they have so much!! If you're after notebooks, stationary or painting stuff take a look here.
K. S.
Amazing arts and craft shop. The place is immense. Just when I thought I'd seen the whole place, there was more. Has just about everything you could need. Paper, glue, paint, kits, ribbons, and tons of things to give you ideas. Staff very friendly and helpful. Best arts and crafts shop I've been in.
H. C.
Great place, everything you need for arts & craft. The staff are very helpful and friendly I got just what I needed
A. A.
Great for finding craft supplies you didn't think you'd need. Staff very helpful & informative if you have a query on a product or techniques. Prices are reasonable & competative therefore no need to shop on Amazon etc. As you can get help & advice when you buy & also as everything is on show, you get instant ideas & you don't have to wait in for a delivery driver!
G. W.
Really good art shop, pretty much everything you will need for whatever creative hobby you have. Lots of crafty gifts upstairs and art supplies downstairs. Price wise it's pretty much the same as anywhere else in the area. Unfortunately on the day the two things I saw on the website were not in stock, just empty spaces on the shelf. My fault for not ringing first but still like the idea of actual browsing and shopping rather than online all the time.
S. M.
Genuinely the best arts and crafts shop I've ever visited. Lots and lots of supplies for different types of project. There's even spaces you can hire out I think if you need it. 100% one of my favourite craft shops.
W. g. o. a. a.
A gorgeous shop with the most visually appealing displays full of colour and quirk.
E. H.
An Aladdins cave of well stocked art materials!
D. W.
My first purchase online of a couple of Seawhite sketch pads. Best price by far and fast, cheap delivery. Very impressed
v. d.
One the best places for art and craft supplies in Manchester.
J. Y.
I do not live anywhere near this shop, so my order was posted, and arrived in good time, so pleased with the service.
To the person who was refused entry because you didnt have a mask, I am glad this shop had the strength to refuse you entry into the shop. Nobody like wearing these things, but to keep our shops open and everybody a little safer, its a small price to pay
P. S.
Tried the click and collect service in Manchester. I managed to mess up my order. The very friendly guys there were able to sort it out for me in no time and get me exactly what I needed. Without any tills open or customer access to the shop. Many Thanks! Great shop and great customer service.
M. J.
Is good. My daughter wanted to buy some resin. The woman who helped us had obviously used resin and gave us good advice, something you can't get online.
L. M.
Lovely local craft shop over three floors with loooooads of materials etc to choose from. The staff can sometimes be a bit unhelpful (I say sometimes because I’m sure they’re not all unhelpful but all the intersections I’ve had they have been) and you might find better prices elsewhere but there’s more choice here than most places. I’ve easily spent a few hours here at a time before, it’s a good shop to find inspiration and new ideas in
Â. C. F.
I absolutely love this shop, it's amazing if you are doing arts and crafts, or just art. It's cheap for its quality. And there is a big range of items and gadgets.
C. M.
Love this place! A grand old building with a huge array of art and craft supplies. I am only a beginner and always found the staff really helpful :)
A. A.
Great place to get your art and or papercraft supplies. Well laid out shop, materials are easy to find. They also have a selection of haberdashery and knitting wool. The staff are very knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
M. L.
Amazing staff, brilliant selection of crafts, good price and just a great place to visit with lots of space.
B. H.
This place is awesome. Whether or not you're an artist or just want something that looks like art, this is the place.
My favourite is that they stock Leuchtturm 1917 notebooks. Beyond that there is so much other stuff. Great for gifts.
If you're a more serious artist, wander downstairs to get all the supplies you could ask for.
Great service too.
A. S.
There's always a great selection of quirky gifts and cards here, plus plenty of art materials on the lower floors. Staff are friendly and helpful too and the photo booths are brilliant (though sometimes not working because they're pretty old).
F.
This place is lovely! It has everything a creative soul needs to get started on a project. It has loads of interesting gift ideas, and everything is quite well priced.
The staff were helpful and friendly.
Simply, a crafters paradise. 🔮
A. L.
Reasonably priced excellent quality art and craft supplies, and with a huge range of stock - if you need something, they'll almost certainly have it.
Staff are friendly and can always help you out if you need advice or suggestions and, to top it all off, it's just a great looking shop.
Genuinely can't fault it.
N. B.
A great shop for art supplies and creative gifts. Plenty of ideas for all ages.
S. L.
I have always loved this place. Since before they acquired their upstairs section. Now it is even more awesome than ever, providing folks with all sorts of artsy bits and pieces, from the novice crafter to the serious artist.
Upstairs is more gifty, notebook type products with plenty of options and displayed with flair and fancy. Downstairs you will find the specifics - paintbrushes, specialist papers, tools for all sorts of art mediums and the books to go with it. Going a little deeper, you will also find studios that are available to hire with specialist machines and tools in them.
Such a place of possibility, and a joy to visit.
A. X.
A large craft store which is easily located within the city. Although I could not find one of the items I went in there for, it seems to be a treasure chest for anyone who enjoys arts and crafts. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
j. J.
Expensive but everything you need as an artist or creative; lovely staff
C. C.
THE place for your art, design, craft and making needs! I have never left empty handed. Staff are always super friendly and helpful. Great spot for unique greetings cards and gifts. Love that there is now a guillotine service and workshops too.
H. R.
A simply amazing shop for artists and crafters. There are three floors (ground and two basements) so make sure to see it all. Absolutely fantastic ranges of cards, notebooks, gifts, art supplies, books, ... just about everything
B. J. H.
Great shop with a relaxed atmosphere and huge range of products. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Love coming here as the products are tasteful, good quality and beautiful. Yes they are a bit pricier for stationary than your high street shops like WH Smith but you pay for quality.
Art and craft supplies are abundant with wide range (eg. Knitting, clay, painting etc) and are of decent price compared to other art suppliers.
A. R.
A truly amazing range of products for every type of creative hobby imaginable. From candle making to picture framing, knitting, photography and painting. This shop has a tremendous range and is definitely worth a visit. I cannot recommend this store enough, go and visit, you'll love it 😁
A. C.
I always feel inspired after a visit to Fred's. They've always got new arts and crafts items in stock. They seem to always manage to source quirky things from various places. I love how they have such a large range of materials over three floors (ground, lower ground and basement). They even have a laser cutting machine and photographic studio for hire. Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely window displays too!
L. W.
Great variety of products at reasonable prices. Lots of specialist and unique art and craft items with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Nice spot for gift shopping. Clean and bright interior with eye catching displays.
M. P.
Fantastic arts and craft store that has been around forever. It’s Manchester’s best!
Have been using this store for many many moons and can’t rate the store and its staff highly enough. It’s an Aladdin’s cave for arts and crafts supplies and their prices are fair.
R. L. H. I.
This isnt Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Joanns or some other craft store. The employees clearly care about art and creativity. They are eager to interact with customers and the mood here is pleasant. I didnt find exactly what I was looking for but I am searching for a rare craft and found a few related items. I will gladly order from them online to ship to the U.S. in the future.
S. S.
It's quite possible that one can find anything and everything related to arts and craft and DIYs and knitting and stitching and it all here!!!! It is like a trip to your favourite toy store for a kid... I was completely taken aback!!! Got their lovely tote bag in.... shocking pink... Quite right for the time of the year and the state of my mind!!!
n. p.
Great shop, fantastic merchandise 👍
c. s.
Very good click and collect delivery, decent prices and create range of craft, art and stationary material
W. L.
Great art shop if you are an art student in Manchester, only a short walk from Piccadilly and generally has most of the art supplies you need. It can be on the pricier side but overall quality and selection of products is great. I’d say it’s better than hobby craft if you are a a-level or uni art student this is where you should go.
D. B.
Please give me a like if helpful👍
A large craft store within a short walking distance from Piccadilly gardens in Manchester. Expanded over the years to cover three large showroom floors. They have a really comprehensive collection of crafting items covering most arts and artisan crafts together with some gift items too. They also have a laser cutting service in store where you can realise your own designs. A quirky touch are three vintage photo booths which are fully working and which are I believe available for hire at events.
Very impressed.
R. B.
Sells everything crafty and could easily spend hours here!
K. S.
Really helpful and knowledgeable staff and huge options and diverse products. Upstairs is more gifts and fun things while downstairs is equipment and materials. Yes maybe you could find things cheaper online but thats only easy when you know what you are looking for. Good to be able to see, touch and get advice before buying.
K. C.
Helpful staff and lots of good craft supplies
V. J.
Fantastic go to place for nearly all things arts and craft. There are on site facilities for access to things like laser cutter and access to I believe macs as well as plenty of little gift options.
It can be a bit overwhelming at times with all the options though the staff are knowledgeable. I did think some of the areas could do with a bit more stock (the fabric paints were all messed up last I went) and the spray paint could do with a pantone style book to look up against rather than stare at the wall behind the counter.
N. N.
The biggest selection of arts supplies in Manchester . You can tell the love and care that has gone into making this place what it is, wonderful home made decor and a great open layout. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and give great advice. The room on ground level is only about 10% of the area of the whole store, which is mostly underground
K.
Great selection and massive store
J.
Fred Aldous is an amazing art store, there is a basement with the art supplies in. Upstairs is more books, notepads, greetings cards. The art supply selection is second to none there is at least about 3 different products of the same thing you want, be it a paintbrush, a paint, a canvas, a sketchbook etc. The selection is simply amazing. A must visit if you are creative.
P. D.
A must-visit place for artists or accessories lovers. This massive shop has 3 floors full of stuff, mostly accessories for making handcrafted objects like materials, books, etc but also it is full of other cute things. It is recommendable if your are desperate to find a present.
C. W.
Really like this shop. Went in for a notepad but could have ended up buying loads. Really friendly staff too. Imagine they'd be helpful if you had a question but as I needed a notepad didn't really need any advice.
Quite inspiring. Not cheap but that's because products are quality
J. J.
Aladdin's craft cave; a little expensive compared to online prices, but great to see the stuff, & they have a large choice across huge range of crafts. Plus, they run workshops, have noticeboards for arty things, and sell posh stationery gifts.
J.
As a person who loves stationery and art supplies, this is a great shop. It has arts and crafts supplies for everything you might need and the selection is good. Also lots of cool ideas for gifts and DIY kits. Recommended.
H. F.
Possibly one of the best art supply shops in Manchester, don't allow yourself to be put off by the top of the shop the basement is where it is at with every craft supply you might ever need. Plus they will hire out the workshops below too at a very reasonable price, gosh I sound like I work there... There facilities are great plus they have some other organisations who run things like quilting workshops etc. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, so all in all worth a visit.
H. G.
I've walked past this place so many times thinking it would be a fancy unaffordable place with overpriced paper and artist pencils. However I was pleasantly surprised to find a great range of products. Similar to paperchase but better selection of products, wider variety and good prices. Great for the odd gift or two, gift wrap, and the occasional unique designer stationary item.
J. S.
One of the best art/craft stores I have ever been in! Books, party stuff, paints, gifts and lots of stuff. Go downstairs and they even have Airfix model kits that I built as a boy!
S. A.
Vast range of stock for almost all craft needs. Prices can sometimes be a little higher than I expect but I don't really know what a normal price should be. However the convenience of everything in one place off sets this. Recommended.
A.
A big range of art stuff to buy and will most definitely have what you're looking for. Bit pricy but there's a lot of funny items there too. The first floor has a bunch of different things and the downstairs floor is full of art supplies
A. C.
this is a great art and crafts shop for professionals and amateurs. The refurbished top floor houses lots of quirky stationary and gifts, middle floor is paints and fabrics, bottom floor is paper and studio space. Staff are really knowledgeable and friendly.
L. H.
If you can't find what you want in Fred Aldous then it probably doesn't exist. An amazing shop that stocks everything arty, crafty and everything inbetween. Have a trip downstairs which is huge and downstairs again which is even bigger. Make sure you leave yourself enough time to look around and find you way back outside
J. R. R.
Always an amazing selection of craft and art supplies for creatives. A little expensive for hobbyists but for professionals this is the best place to find quality materials. I only wish it was wheelchair accessible.
T.
This place is awesome. Whenever I visit I'm filled with the nostalgia of my college days & searching for art supplies. Ask anyone in Manchester where to buy arts and crafts stuff and you're pretty much guaranteed to be sent here. The staff are always so helpful, if you can't find what you're looking for just ask them and they'll point you in the right direction.
B. R.
I have been shopping around to find my two littles ones Blockitecture Big City as a joint present for Christmas (joint because it is expensive) - having found the present at a much lower price than elsewhere I thought there must be a compromise - but no - great price, great website, free postage & tracking (unlike some competitors), and arrived quickly and in perfect condition - not shopped with Fred Aldous Ltd before but will be doing so again - really good service.
E.
Such a fantastic range. A place you can spend hours. Very well laid out. Helpful staff.
J. P.
An expert art supplies shop with additional range of quirky stationary and home accessories. Always expert and honest advice from the staff. Probably the oldest art shop Manchester?
A. G.
Prepare to spend time in this Aladdin's cave for artists and crafts people. If you're short of inspiration, they have a great stock of books too. I was too absorbed to think of taking photos but will do next time.
T. M.
Really impressed with their click and collect service during lockdown. Now I don't have to wait a week for zips off ebay.
S. S.
Black wing pencils and so much more
missed these sort of art and craft material shops where the range is not just the usual suspects.
C. N.
I could spend a full day in here and spend way more money than I should. The PERFECT art supplier.
G. L.
Fred Aldous is an awesome shop for arts and crafts. I bought a new sketchbook which was great value for money. The staff were very friendly and the shop was very well layed out so I could easily locate products. I would highly reccomend this shop to anyone wanting to buy high quality art materials.
A.
Love this company! They email me when an item is back in stock and their delivery time is amazing. Never known any other company to deliver this quickly and it's so useful when you're running a business and need stock in a hurry. Will definitely be using them even more in the future.
C.
First visit here in ages. Have to say that I was very disappointed in the yarn selection. Far more limited than I expected.
H. R.
Amazing selection of arts and crafts materials. Shop is over three floors but products are easy to browse (different sections are clearly marked). Reasonably priced.
T. F. A. G. &. O. S.
We always visit when we are in Manchester and find it a lovely place to find art supplies and craft materials not always available in Northern Ireland. Great place to browse and very helpful staff. Can guarantee on your first visit you won't have seen it all and will be keen to go again very soon.
L. H.
Excellent range of art and craft materials.
M. F.
Amazing place just crammed with everything and anything crafty. Serious supplier of everything you might ever need to do anything arty. Just a place to browse and gaze and be amazed at what can be done.
Knowledgeable staff and a whole host of services offered, plus two genuine old photo booths for those passport pictures of a certain style.
Two hidden floors below ground just packed with artistic delights.
P. B.
If you like art or crafts and are in Manchester then you need to visit Fred Aldous. They have a wide range of stuff for a wide range of arts. They may not be the cheapest but it's worth supporting local businesses that offer a great variety of goods and services.
S. D.
My first visit to this place and it can only be described as a Treasure Cave for anyone creative. No matter what you are into Fred Aldous will no doubt have it.
A massive selection of arts and crafts materials spread across 3 floors, you could easily lose hours and spend a fortune. Will definitely be venturing back.
J. S.
Great place to buy arts and crafts, literally everything that you need is there somewhere and the team can help you find stuff if you are unsure where certain items are. Only downside is it is with spray paints are hard to look at for the right colour properly without asking someone to get it from behind the desk and can make you feel awkward if you can't find the colour you need.
L. W.
The place you go where you know they'll have the art supplies you need, no matter what it is. Very knowledgeable staff who all seem to have an interest in art and crafts. Sometimes more expensive than other places but very convenient.
A. L.
If you love arts and crafts, you'll love Fred Aldous. It has everything. And even if you just want to check somewhere new out - go and visit. Great for card and papers etc. Staff helpful. There is a downstairs too!
A. W.
I love Fred Aldous - don't panic boyfriend he's not a new beau. He's an amazing craft shop full of stuff I want to buy.
I make lots of stuff, or at least I get crafts in the hope that one bored Sunday I will make lots of stuff. Sewing, drawing, upholstery, weaving I'm a fan of it all.
This shop is full of gift ideas, all your craft needs and it has good courses too.
This place is an emporium of inspiration. Loved the old photo booths too.
M. C.
Great, we got exactly what we wanted.
M. C.
I've been going to Fred Aldous for years to buy art materials, (I'm an artist) there's a wealth of specialist products and the staff are always really knowledgeable and helpful, they also have laser cutting facilities, craft workshops, risograph machine and gift items.
T. D.
Lots of art supplies, however they seem a little disorganized
D. N. E.
10 year ago I used to fancy myself as a bit of an artist, I would spend ages every week mesmerised at everything they had to offer. I would always treat myself to a new fineliner or pencil or a new sketchbook. I recently returned for a visit and once again got lost in there. Absolutely amazing little place, even left with a new sketchbook, pencil and fineliner... For old times sake.
E. V.
One of my favourite shops in Manchester. Absolutely huge selection of art and craft supplies. Plus cute homewares, stationary, books and trinkets.
J. B.
An artists toy shop. Interesting stuff and tempting to buy but I procrastinate one project to another and it costs me money. I wish they had the mini rectangle canvases, size approx of A7 as made my mascot but 'she' is falling apart.
L. S.
Really fantastic place for photos, cards, cup cake wraps and more! Attended another amazing Google event here but for something who would say that they 'weren't that creative' suddenly seemed to find themselves here! Recommend, so big and great for a browse.
E. D.
Whenever I am stuck for inspiration or looking for a project to keep me busy Fred Aldous is brimming with ideas. I always walk away with so much more than what I want and my mind is always brimming with ideas. The store is a magical mystery tour of amazing arts and crafts which is split over three levels. Don't be surprised to loose several hours browsing in here, it's a great craft shop.
M. C.
A really nice place, sell a lot of handcraft and art related materials with a variety of choices. A very professional place. People who like to do handcraft or looking for some materials or tools in art, will definitely love this place!
J. K.
The best place for craft materials
S. F.
Great selection of arts and craft supply. Sometimes a little pricey on some items but everything is together! The staff knows where everything is as well if you needed help
M. H.
First visit. Excellent selection of just about everything anything connected with arts & crafts. Prices compare favourably with the internet.

I would like to call myself an artist and Fred Aldous definitely inspires my wallet into thinking that too!
If you do any type of arts and crafts, this store is definitely somewhere you need to take a trip to! The main floor is full of stationary, cards and niknaks, similar to that of Paperchase, but downstairs is where you really want to go! Rows upon rows of pens, pencils, paints, fabrics, bits and bobs... Literally anything for your arting needs!
When I go in here, I limit myself to how much I can spend or else I'm in danger of spending far too much!
C. C.
Went here for the first time last night for a Local Google event. What an amazing place! So many things all under one roof. It's an artists dream. I felt like I was in wonderland most of the evening. Highly recommended to any arts and crafts . They've also got a great little photo studio in-house that you can hire and some awesome retro photo booths in store. What a little gem!
L. D.
I've been a fan of Fred work is since the 90s and their very 90s mail order service. This site was fab! It's 3 floors of craft p*rn the upper floor appears like a craft book store but go down a floor an it's a whole warehouse of crafting goodness! The lowest floor is a bunker of paper/ flat arts and crafter workshops. If I'd had more time the laser cutting would have been a definite lurking spot! All very well organized and sectioned although as a resin crafter it would have been nice to see more pigments but I can always use their web shop. Def worth a look and the fabric arts section was amazing! Also more types of glitter than I have ever seen!!!
A. C.
Super shop! This place it a true treasure trove with almost anything crafty or arty you could want! Reasonable prices and well layed out as well as inspiring for new projects too!
J. J.
The Tardis of Arts & Crafts! I was really surprised by the sheer size of the place its split over three levels and has a huge selection. As you stroll around the store it just keeps going and going and going.
The business has been going strong since 1886 and it’s clear to see why. They have everything you need for all sizes of arts and craft projects, in fact they have over 25,000 different products. This really is the one stop shop in Manchester for arts and crafts.
P. N.
Shops great, roomy and well stocked but, the staff are a bit lacking in knowledge regarding what they do stock. I went in intending to spend about £50 on materials and left with nothing 👎
P. B.
I've always had great experiences in Fred Aldous, including my recent visit. All customers were wearing face masks and respect social distancing.
D. T.
This place is like the Tardis, it looks small from the outside, then you go in and realise that 90% of the shop is below. They sell every possible art supply you can imagine. Who needs Amazon!?
R. M.
Great shop for gifts / crafts / trinkets to brighten up your house!
A. W.
Lovely store, it looks small from the outside but its huge downstairs. It has everything you could possibly need in terms of crafting supplies and the staff are so helpful!
B. “. M.
Wide selections of materials and tools needed for vertically any type of craft/Hobby/Artwork you may need to tackle.
Friendly staff, large well laid out store....my only negative point that relates to the shop, is that items seem to overpriced
C. S.
Provides pretty much every piece of art and craft equipment/material you will need!
They also offer a student discount, which is great, especially when you are an art student wanting to grab cheap and quality art supplies.
L. 1.
Hipster styling and a huge choice of craft goods/books/quirky gifts. Only two brands of yarn stocked but there was so much other good stuff I could have spent a fortune!
B. R.
Good selection of craft supplies for a wide range of arts
j.
My best supplier. I make candles and buy almost everything from Fred Aldous. Love them even more : I recently placed an order and usually I get my supply in a day or two but this time almost a week had gone and when I checked my order, I had accidentally clicked on collect instead of delivery. (Guess it was sitting waiting for me to collect). I sent out an email and explained my error. I was even more surprised the very next morning to receive my parcel. How great was that? Even more magical was it when I got an email to say I need not pay for postage!!! Thank you ever so much. You the best.
M. H.
One of my favourite shops!! It's never let me down for anything I have needed to find arts and crafts wise or gifts!
I. B.
I told my graphic designer friend I was off to an event being held here and her response was "I love Fred Aldous! It is the only place you ever need to go to for creative stuff". And to be fair to her, she was right.
As someone who isn't the most creative (I claim to have "a good eye for design") I wanted to fill baskets with paint, canvases and other supplies. Very inspirational place.
K. G.
A treasure trove for anyone who has a creative bone in their body. At least three floors of arty goodness to explore, plus multiple photobooths for some retro photo fun. I hear they contribute supplies to the street artists who work on the space outside too - which is ace. Generally a really great vibe. Buy stuff already!
T. H.
Every year the family gets a photo done at the black and white photo booth , a great experience, extensive selection of art and craft supplies, we keep coming back for the hama beads and the groovy stationery.
M. H.
Friendly atmosphere, helpful staff. Fantastic range of art materials from plastecine, clay, paints, canvases to unusual books and artistic ornamentation. Established in Manchester for over 140 years. A much needed source for those who have an artistic flair.Numerous types of paper and other raw craft materials.
A. C.
Great shop with so much choice! Staff very helpful and friendly too! Great for stuff from craft work, needlepoint to gift sets and oil paints! Huge choice
J. G.
Love this place! They sell anything and everything to do with art and craft, along with really gorgeous gifts, cards and stationery. Wish we had one in the Midlands!
A. P.
An amazing place. Any craft that one is interested in is catered for. The staff are brilliant, very patient, friendly and most helpful.
H. P.
My newest find in Manchester, can't believe its taken me this long!
3 Floors of arty inspiration. This shop sells everything you could ever need for making a masterpiece and MORE
It also has classrooms on the lower floor for workshops,
The photo booths are the main floor are brilliant for creating retro images.
h. w.
Good shop, lots of crafting materials as well as some nice gift ideas on first floor. Main issue is the prices but with the range they have it's often worth a look
S. W.
Huge selection of arts and crafts materials across two floors. You can order online to collect in store. There are also some retro photo booths inside.
J. A.
Awesome art store. Very unique with a huge range of products. Such a cool place to browse and buy interesting prints, stationary and supplies.
S. J.
Three floors of art and craft at reasonable prices
K. L.
This place is an emporium of everything you'd ever need to express your creativity, it's my definitely my favourite shop in Manchester. I remember going in here ever since I was in school doing GCSE Art, since then it has grown to 3 floors of craft magic. The first floor is all your make your own kits, diaries, easels and the likes. The 2nd floor is all your paints, pens, paper, sewing, knitting, the list in endless. Then on the 3rd floor is where they hold all the classes, a photo studio, sketch pad and canvases. The prices are reasonable and they even offer student discount. Basically if you are ever in need of any creative tools, Fred Aldous should be your first and only stop.
B. H.
Lovely little hidden gem of a shop that we stumbled across by accident. As a fan of retro cameras and associated paraphernalia it's a real treasure trove. A great place to grab a gift or the latest camera from Lomography.
M.
Only recently became aware of Fred Aldous on Stephen Mason Square, Manchester, after a tip off from an artist friend . Will definitely gave what you are looking for.
M. P.
A decent art and craft shop, apart from the stairs going downstairs, which aren't wide enough for 2 people at a time, the store is easy to get around. The staff are friendly making shopping a pleasant experience
K. R.
The selection of products is great, and it feels like an aladins cave! Whilst not as cheap as other art shops, the long running business makes and customer service makes attending worth it!
H. M.
Amazing shop on 3 floors beautifully set out with an old fashioned feel. If you love all kinds of creative hobbies you have to go here.
P. W.
This place is a treasure trove of artistic creation. It has changed a lot since I was last here, it is quirky and fires up the imagination as soon as you step through the doors! Everything from calligraphy to needle art to screen printing, it is the gem of Manchester, I imagine most are still yet to find it, so spread the word!!
j. p.
From what I saw its very well stocked, but very poorly stocked with what I needed. It's a huge place, friendly staff. Just let down with resin craft accessories.
M. G.
Absolutely wonderful shop for those wanting arts and craft supplies. Even if you don't, it's still worth a look as there's great ornaments and knick-knacks.
A.
Absolutely incredible selection of products. If I won billions in the lottery; I'd definitely consider Fred Aldous to be one of my first shopping hauls.
C. W.
I love this store, I have many happy memories of visiting as a child with my grandma and now I love going there myself. Wide range of art materials and gifts.
G. M.
Has most things you need for any kind of DIY paper/card/candle/soap/woodwork art you'd want to do.. shop upstairs has some nifty ideas as gifts..
1.
For me this was a hidden life saver, in Manchester looking for Fimo polymer clay and Google maps took me straight to it hidden up Lever St. Fred Aldous has loads of different crafts, a good amount of stock and very welcoming, the staff that helped me give me all the advice I needed on the polymer clay I was wanting.
Thank you defiantly be back.
s. h.
Great range from toys and sticking fillers to decent art supplies, 3 floors of temptation. School of craft also runs great sewing courses in the basement.
M. T.
Absolutely amazing in here. For all your art and craft needs. I'm so glad I've found this place. The staff are really friendly and welcoming too.
D. H.
Fabulous shop over 3 floors for artists materials, cards, wrapping paper and notebooks. Staff can be a bit aloof. You can also get passport photos here.
D. O.
This is a place where you can easily get most of your art materials or equipments. A very big stores, among their stores items are : different sizes of paper and cards, artists media.
C. B.
Upstairs has really cute items for all crafty hipsters. Downstairs is more of a supplies section. Price is what you'd expect... Not cheap
P. W.
This is probably the best shop in Manchester for anything relating to arts and crafts. They always have plenty of great gift ideas and it is difficult to resist buying something for myself as well.
R. H.
Fred Aldous is home to the biggest range of art, crafts and stationary supplies available in the city centre.
On the ground floor you've got a selection of quirky and craft inspired gifts, notebooks and cards. The downstairs then has the answer to anyone's creative needs. Selling everything from textiles to paints, papers, jewellery making materials and much much more!
This shop also has a couple old school photobooths - great for doing with friends.
J. P.
So wonderfully filled with amazing creative gifts, equipment and artistic gadgets. The shop was like a hive of everything amazing.
M. W.
An Aladdin's cave of art n craft supplies. Full on mcr institution. Also do printing, laser cutting, screen printing and photography - all sorts of niche stuff. Great gift selection up stairs too. If you like making things go check it out. If you're bored, go find a new hobby.
T. B.
Fred Aldous is the one stop shop for art materials in the Manchester area - all the materials you could need and excellent service from all staff who are friendly but also have excellent knowledge of the materials themselves. I regularly shop in store and on the website and am yet to be disappointed!
k. l.
Brilliant place for crafting materials, two floors of crafting madness and such a choice to make you go in for one thing and walk out with a couple of bags because you've thought of other imaginings, makes you think of Mr magorians wonder imporium but for craft. Loved it
S. P.
4 star - The array of products you can buy there is amazing, you could spend ages in here. The photobooths are supercool too.
- 1 star - A large portion of the staff seem to be really socially awward in the sense they come across as you are beneath them, so spend as much of your time away from the till.
C. P.
It seems they have everything for crafts from knitting to oil painting to books on how to set up a small craft business. The floors are absolutely huge!
P. B.
A life saver of an art material shop. With a massive range there are some things they don't have but what they do have is an education in itself. One of the few places I can stock up on black wing pencils
B. I.
A number of floors with assorted craft related items and stationary - ground floor has typical gift items and stationary similar in vein to a Paperchase and the basement is full of craft products and consumables like Hobbycraft.
J. F.
Great branch of Fred Aldous, they have everything a creative could ever want and need, no matter what medium. Staff are friendly and helpful, I could spend hours in here.
Don't forget to checkout the two lower floors in the basement!
R. P.
Such a good store. Definitely worth exploring all three floors, they have everything you could ever need for anything creative!
C. B.
Other than a place for art supplies, this is a fantastic shop, full of craft curiosities to satisfy the creative minds - and ideal for finding odd funny gifts.
R. S.
Really quirky place with lots of retro stuff plus good for arts and crafts. Well worth a visit. Not cheap but has quality goods.
D. S.
The range of products available is incredible, and the staff are super friendly and willing to help you find the perfect tools for whatever project you are working on!
P.
Great for all your arts and crafts needs. If you can't find it here then you're in the wrong place.
G. R.
This is the BEST stationery stop in the city. You can get everything there, and it's always so aesthetically pleasing.
K. p. g.
This place is a treasure trove for arts and crafty people like me, anything you can think of Fred Aldous sells, staff are really nice and helpful.
C. B.
Loads of range in supplies love it there!!

Pretty overpriced, but they do have everything. Good deals on bulk sculpting supplies like modrock and plaster of paris, and a huge selection of paper, sketchpads, and canvass.
C. D.
Git me sprayz frm ere * great selection - enjoyable shop every time !
J. L.
Could have spent the whole day in there just browsing their broad range of arts and crafts materials. Definitely recommend!!
A. W.
I bought a light box from Fred Aldous yesterday lunchtime; by 10 am today it had arrived, just as described and perfect for my needs. I'm a very satisfied customer and will certainly be happy to buy from the company again.
A. J.
I ordered from Fred Aldous for the first time on 2nd October 2012, ordering 200ASA 35mm colour slide film that my mother hasn't been able to find anywhere locally for some time. So the first plus was that I'd found a stockist - the second plus was that my order must have been processed just about immediately because the films arrived the day after.
The final plus is that (having emailed them to thank them for such good service) they replied immediately, and I was assured that they would continue to stock the films my mum can't do without!
First class. Very happy, will most definitely use them again.
C. S.
It's not the cheapest but they have a brilliant selection of art and craft supplies, plus some nice gift-y type stuff. Great history behind the business too and they run workshops in the back.
M. A. S.
Great place to get any arts and craft iten you would want. Also great for birthday presents, cards and decoration. They also do craft classes.

C. S.
As ever, they have an amazing stock of arts and craft material but they've added a great selection of well designed gift items.
P. P.
Working on an art project or looking to follow your passion? Fred Aldous has everything you'd need to get started. The selection is great and the staff really know their stuff, although price is quite high due to being one of the only places in Manchester to provide this service.
c. w.
Best art shop in Manchester! They have literally everything, and you always get great offers in the clearance.
R. H.
An Aladdin's cave of art and craft materials. If you are planning a painting or sculpture or textiles project this should be your first stop. Could spend hours browsing in this place!

Easily the best art / craft store I know of. Huge shop, wonderful things, some a bit expensive but nothing unexpectedly so.
Z. E. B.
Iconic craft supplies emporium in the heart of Manchester's fashionable Northern Quarter.
Retro photo booths upstairs and workshops in the basement for creative courses like screen-printing.
J. R.
Lots of lovely stuff, but they only seem to stock the most expensive brands, and the yarn selection is a bit weak
M. N.
If you are a creative, its like visiting a candy shop. A great selection of craft materials
n. m.
For all you craft needs.

d. m.
Upstairs gifts and novelty; downstairs comprehensive art and craft supplies. Great shop
A. S.
THE place in Manchester to pick up absolutely anything related to arts and crafts - coloured card, paint, fake fur, stained glass kits, stencils etc etc etc. Over the years it has expanded slowly and the lower basement area now has several workshop areas for photography, screen printing etc. I love the retro photobooths upstairs with the orange and blue curtains that take me back to getting photos for my school buspass.
