I went on a free tour of the library today .Lovely Pat was our very engaging guide who kept us all engaged and made us laugh along the way ! Highly recommend this secret gem .it’s a few minutes from the central station and you are welcome just to pop in . It is truly special . You can talk freely in most areas and you can buy a mug of tea or coffee too

Absolutely loved the Paul Ferris book review tonight. A classic love story entwined with football. The book may me smile, laugh and cry throughout. Already looking forward to his other book, not to mention his film from a non published novel.

A beautiful place containing probably hundreds of thousands of books from well in the past to the present on pretty much any subject you can think of. Staff were really friendly and gave us a brief history of the society and the building as we entered. Although we came on a visit to Newcastle and so couldn't stop for long, I would definitely come back here properly if I ever had the chance. A great place to bring a laptop, bury your head in a book or simply have a coffee/tea.

Wonderful place, friendly and supportive staff, who came up to me to help me as soon as they saw me walk in and be amazed by the place. I made a request for a bizarre book (even though I'm not a member), and they were kind enough to go get it for me and let me peruse it for an hour. Can't recommend this place enough.

This beautiful building and interior houses the most interesting collection of books ancient and new. It's a delightful experience just to browse, but there are myriads of in depth studies and reference catalogues. It feels like stepping back in time but also in relation to one's own history of libraries from childhood. It's spine tingling! And the staff are impeccable! Ever helpful thoughtful and knowledgeable. Thanks so much.

Have walked past this place so often thought that I really needed to get past the door. Incredible building with lovely atmosphere and old fashioned feel. Felt like I'd gone back in time! Alexander Armstrong is the president but was obviously busy doing Pointless cos no sign of him! Able to get refreshments but staff a little snooty- definitely sighed when i asked where milk was!

Another world with ancient (and new) books, oak tables, and iron curlicue railings off the middle of the town centre. You can drop in and browse without being a member, they don't bite (although some may speak at length...). Some interesting displays, lectures and clubs there too for the interested. And if you become a member you can enter the SILENCE ROOM on your own... Update: still going, albeit with some precautions. Ideal for some quiet!

Interesting this was the 1st time I had been inside the Literary and Philosophical society. (Or the Lit and Phil)as it is called in Newcastle. There was 1 quite funny moment as I was looking for the toilets. I could hear someone playing a piano not very well I hasten to add. I opened the door of a little side room and a man was sitting in front of the piano and I presume he was trying to fix it. Although I may be wrong. An interesting visit nonetheless, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The Lit and Phil is an excellent private library to tour. The institution has a long history and hosts public events on evenings.

Absolutely incredible library but the staff are so rude, even for librarians. Treat you like you're an irritation just for visiting. There seems to be a contempt for young people, which is ironic, because if it wasn't for people my age in a few years the library will be empty. I am a paying member but frequently have to deal with rude guests and staff acting like I'm a pain in their ass for being here.

I popped in on a visit to Newcastle. A wonderful historic atmosphere, smell of old books and quirky vibe. Clearly a huge range of old and new works but no public computers, which to keep the atmosphere I think is a good thing (although people bring their laptops). Obviously a place run by people who love it (it is a charity) so I would reccommend you visit and support this precious place!

Brilliant place to write, I'm working on my novel there. Amazing range of books (I got an original print by Joseph Stalin). Plenty of facilities- toilets, coffee shop, silent work rooms, performance rooms. If you want to do practically any research, check it out. If you want to do some work, you should definitely go!

The lit and Phil is a wonderful library, like setting foot into the library of a stately home. Its unspoilt interior has survived intact and is stunning. Its one of Newcastle's landmark buildings that is not to be missed. Had it not been for pioneers like the lit and Phil we would not have the library's that we have today.

What an amazing Regency Building and a hidden gem of a place to visit! I jest fell in love with the place as soon as I entered! If you love the feel of history, then this is definitely the place to be! The books aren’t too shabby either!
