Reviews of Waterstones

Waterstones on Broad Street in Reading is a lovely store. The architecture of the exterior and especially the interior is really cool and gives a sense of nostalgia. It’s a big book store and packed with lots of books and some other quirky products. This is book worm paradise for sure. I always try to visit when I’m in town as it just inspires me to read more and I’m always curious to see the latest books on the shelves to the left of the main entrance door. The staff reviews of the books is a nice touch. The store (the building) does have some history and there is a glass case near the checkout that has a stone and plaque that describes a little about the history of the building. I tend to stand in the store staring at all the books and day dreaming. Also, why do books smell so good 🤷🏻♂️….

This place is my favourite place in the earth.
It is a bookshop, mainly filled with all new books genres. The shop looks like an old, antique house, built in the 1600s and overlooks broad street with big roof windows. The whole shop smells of must, paper and ink. It is over two floors and is full of tiny rooms and crevices stacked with books. Books are everywhere, shelves cover every surface. Books are stacked in piles on the floor, the stairs, EVERYWHERE. If you have come to find a particular book this is the place to be.

Great bookshop with lots of space at the heart of central Reading. If you enjoy spending hours browsing, staring at bookshelves and looking for that book that will grab your attention... This is your place! A wide selection of books of all kinds are available at this branch of the always interesting Waterstones. The spacious building is an attraction on itself. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Always on top of what's new, the classics and what you might like. The kids section is big and very interesting with lots of options placed by age groups! I highly recommend paying a visit!

Exhilarated is very less a word to describe every visit to Waterstones..especially the one in Broad Street, Reading. It's a wonder world inside this seemingly normal but traditional look of the entry. Would love to be there for as long as possible, but alas it closes by 5 PM (just like 95% of the other businesses here) on Sundays. The staff are well-informed, extremely helpful and sustain the Soul of the place. Will go back there 1000s of times! :)

One of the best bookstores I've seen 👏 Huge range of books in different categories. They also have some gift options. The Reading one is big and neatly kept. Love to visit again 🤩
P. H.
Vast selection of books over two floors. If they don't have something the staff are very helpful at tracking it down and ordering it in.

Great place to wander and browse.
I love a Waterstones but this one was extra special due to its history ... fascinating looking at the artefacts and information on its original purpose.
Staff helpful even though they didn't have what I wanted...Worth a visit

I love this place to bits! Such a good choice of books, and it's a real pleasure to wander upstairs, take a sit on one of the comfortable couch. Take the time to browse.
You also can find children's books, toys, etc
There is a good choice of gifts ideas if you want, calendars, mugs, etc
The staff is friendly and helpful.

Very wide book collection they have. It is a nice place where you can buy any type of book you're looking for and it is well organised. The staff is friendly and because of the space you will not have trouble looking around.
Another good aspect of this place is that it looks beautiful and they also have a couple of seats where you can sit down and read for a little bit. However, it would be great if they add some more seats for the people as I consider that reading a book should be free for everyone. Recommended place 👌

I was in England - in that book shop. It's amazing book shop, it has two floors and has so much rooms and parts with books (it also has one part with games and board games, and of course part for kids). It has different parts: fictional, manga, biography, novels, YA books, kids, and many moree. And this book shop have part with just Harry Potter things and books!!! I love this book shop so much, i would recomend it to everyone!
S. A.
Great architecture and a really good selection of books to choose from
C. K.

J. B.
I love Waterstones, its one of my favourite shops and I could spend hours mooching around. The building is beautiful and the selection of books are amazing, staff are helpful. The queuing system for the tills is a little confusing, but the great British Public just love to queue.
e.
Lovely stained glass. Very nice building. Visited just for that to be honest!!
N. D.
Amazing place for book lovers ...lovely and helpful staff..... I could have spent the whole day at this place !!!
F.
This is my favourite bookstore in Reading. The building is beautiful and makes the experience very rewarding. There is a large selection of books. I love browsing and finding new things. It never feels too crowded. Books can be on the expensive side, so I choose very carefully if I want to buy something.
There are also games and puzzles, although I tend not to pay attention to them much.
D. T.
Excellent. Hugely helpful in finding a book for me
O. C.
I enjoyed buying Battleship and I enjoy looking at the other board games and the books that tickle my fantasy. There are literally books for both children and adults and the board games have endless fun for when your friends and family come around and it's a very useful place to go if you love reading.
J. R. M.
Helpful staff and great stock. So important to support bookshops.
J. V.
Never done much reading, but now my son is starting to read more I again start to appreciate bookstores. Lovely to have a browse and have my son pick his own book. No way we can do that online. The couple of pounds extra for a shop bought book is well worth it in my opinion.
C. H.
Great architecture being an old church. Plenty of comfy chairs for browsing.
G. P.
Good well stocked bookshop with helpful staff
S. B.
Very friendly and well resourced book store!
J. I.
I hadn't been into a book shop in years. I get all my books online but I had some giftcards that needed using up. The staff are really helpful! I couldn't find what book I needed, so they looked at their computer and told me exactly where it would be, how many they had and if I would like to order in the sequel. Definitely would recommend
H. K.
Lovely place with a variety of books arranged in different sections
S. C. (.
Good selection of books in store. Friendly staff
C. W.
It's a pleasure to browse here during the week. The staff are only too happy to help if they're not otheraiss busy at the till. The building itself retains some of its character.
A. B.
It is good for looking for books to read the people were helpful and friendly
S. R.
The best Waterstones I visited in the country and lucky to be my local. The building is amazing and perfect for books and stories. The staff always very friendly. I could have found my 2 books cheaper online but supporting this shop and paying only few more coins is worth it.
J. F.
Currently doing on-line only but when open for in store shopping very very good. A wide selection of book genres with very helpful staff and easy to browse presentation makes for an interesting and productive shopping experience. I usually end up.buying more than I intended to.
G. S.
Friendly staff!!! Stocked with books, gifts and comics! Absolutely one of the better Waterstones I have been too. Thank you for keeping books alive!
M. H.
Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. Great selection and nice decor
S. B.
Love this book shop. Sat down and had a read which was really relaxing. Really enjoyed my visit there.
J. W.
It's got a nice atmosphere, really really helpful staff but the sections are all quite small, especially the young adult.
J. D.
Definitely the prettiest bookstore in reading, if not the prettiest I’ve ever been to. 99% of the time staff are very friendly, and recommendations given have been decent too
A. M.
Best bookstore in Reading! If you think, you'll be a returning customer, make a membership card. You'll get some nice discounts. The place is clean and quiet with lots of reading spots. You can find several gift edition books as well.
V. W.
Love this place. I could spend hours in here. I'm a real book lover, forget kindle give me a real book to hold read and smell. This store is a book lovers paradise. Easy comfy chairs to sit and relax in a great loyalty scheme and the staff . They are fantastic. They really know their stuff . You can chat to them for ages about the latest books and their recommendations are good. They have great book signings for every genre.
Check Waterstones out. Trust me you won't be disappointed.
H. K.
Excellent selection of books for all ages and knowledgeable staff
S.
Great store vital very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Definitely worth getting your books from here
B. B.
Lots of books and helpful if you can't find what you're looking for.
A. A. C.
As a Kindle user it's always reassuring to go through real books and buy onen occasionally. Lots of choice and good value.
S. F.
I went there during Christmas rush, still the place was organised and clean - which was impressive to see
K. T.
My daughter loved it in here choosing her books the staff were so helpful and lovely and it was nice to find a place that took cash
D. J. v. S.
Great selection of books on any topic. If they run out of one, you can order online and it's going to be delivered to your home address or can be picked up from the store. Great and happy staff! You can sit down on a second floor in a comfy armchair and have a rest, and possibly read something. I love this place!
B. P.
Visiting Waterstones is like being a member of an exclusive club. Lots of books to browse and no pressure to buy... though I usually do!
M. N.
I will not spoil your adventure but I'll tell you this waterstones is the best book store in the world if not better ever since I stept in this world of wonder I new it was ideal for me.
My name is Mattia
I'm 10 years old and am a great fan of waterstones, I have read 5 books from waterstones (please do not guge me I'm a slow reader).
M. H.
The shop is gorgeous. The many doorways feel mystical as you manoeuvre through the building. It made me feel as though the hook I eventually got my hands on was a secret treasure.
It must have been a long day as the staff definitely seemed exhausted.
R. E.
Brilliant selection of books. If you cannot find a book to enjoy here then I doubt if you will ever find a book!!
C. B.
Lovely bookshop with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. It is split over several levels, with a lift at the back for wheelchair/buggy access, and the unusual layout of the main floor gives it a charming 'library' feel.
If you enjoy shopping in stores like this, please do keep doing so, as online sellers don't offer the same service and are rapidly pushing these shops off our high streets!
A. W.
My family loooves books. So naturally we love bookshops. Waterstones in reading is a quality bookshop.
They have knowledgeable and friendly staff, a wide selection of books including a healthy kids and teens section and lots of other bits and bobs like toys, games and stationary.
We have also enjoyed a couple of meet the author / book.signing events which are a nice touch and a little different.
Finally, get a loyalty card; £10 back for every £100 spent is too good to pass up
C. W.
Everyone who works in the Reading Waterstones clearly loves books and always have an opinion or a suggestion if you are not sure what you are looking for. They are also very happy to point out an offer you have missed or to reassure the customer that they can return something if they are not happy with it. There is often a bit of a queue but this is because they offer a personalised service unlike many shops who cannot get you out of the building quickly enough. Nothing is too much trouble and I can't recommend them enough!
Z. Z.
One of my favourite shops. Love books and this building is absolutely stunning. One of the few places that I love to sit and read and feel v comfy doing so. Superb staff too. Cheryl is a star!! 😁
A. F.
I love this Waterstones store, the building is beautiful and sensitivity restored, it has a very peaceful and calm atmosphere, the children's section in particular is well laid out, stocked and welcoming, and the staff have always been lovely and very helpful.
Y. E.
Great selection of books, and helpful staff
T.
A proper book shop, everything you would expect, with a few places to tuck yourself away and have a little read. Best of all the people who work in the shop share their passion for books and are great at helping us customers find whatever we are looking for, even when I can't quite remember the name of the book I'm after.
l. g.
I could spend hours in here, huge range of books, the shop flows really well from one section to another & it looks amazing.
P. R.
One of the last few great bookshops
R. P.
Let's face it, we rarely go to a store to buy a specific book anymore. We go for when we need inspiration, recommendations, and the atmosphere you only get in such places.
Most Waterstones are located in unique/historic buildings and this is no exception. The layout of the building leads to less densely packed store with more space between aisles. Don't take that to mean there isn't a lot of choice: there's still plenty, with a wide range in all genres, with various recommendations detailed across each of the shelves. The kids section in the ground floor, in its own area (so not disturbing others) looks particularly well stocked (though I didn't check in detail).
There are lots of comfortable seats/chairs dotted around giving you a nice space to sit and flick through a choice of books before you commit.
Would definitely come again, spend a few hours, and leave with another half dozen for my bookshelf.
E. M.
More books than you'll find in an average library and loads of knowledgeable staff who will help you find just what you're looking for. They host meet and greets and talks by authors and these are fabulous as well. The whole building is wheelchair accessible and the staff go out of their way to help.
Z.
One of the best bookshops to escape into and explore. Cosy and inviting, you're bound to find something for you amongst the two wonderful floors – thousands of books which include new releases, bestsellers and some more unheard of titles which can turn out to be a pleasant surprise. Love strolling in here on a busy afternoon if only just to flick through the book selection at the front of the shop and gaze at the beautiful stationery on sale.
P. W.
I love Waterstones. A huge range of fiction and nonfiction with tons of books on any subject you are interested in and if you can't find a book... Waterstones will order it for you. With a points card system you can collect enough to get ten pounds off a new book roughly every one hundred you spend which soon adds up if you are a bookaholic like me. Visits from famous authors happen here quite often and you can have a photo with them. Spend some time at Waterstones to relax and enjoy the children's section as well. Kids will love it.
R. I.
I love book shops, and usually really like Waterstones. However, as an acid reader of science fiction this was a surely disappointing visit. Not a single sci-fi series in stock that I hadn't read before. Bits of a couple, but not all of any. Depressing.
L. B.
Lovely book shop but the queue to pay was insane. Maybe we got unlucky with the timing but....
M. P.
Shop is very well laid out, easy to both directly find a specific item or to browse through sections for ideas. Staff at till very proactive; as soon as a queue started to build up, further staff attended, opening more tills. Pleasant shopping experience.
L. M.
Never have the books I'm looking for but I always find something which interests. Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. I hope Amazon doesn't kill off bookshops
C. P.
Lovely bookshop. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the selection is excellent.
The books do tend to be a bit on the expensive side, and it's usually just cheaper to order on Amazon, unless you prefer the authentic shopping experience, which Waterstones provides.
e. p.
Beautiful old building, great choice of books (obviously!). Staff are always extremely friendly and helpful - offering advice and recommendations on books/gifts etc.
R. R.
Nice Bookshop with a good range of stock. I was able to check out a few titles and ended up buying 3 books that I might have got cheaper on Amazon. But I like the idea of decent bricks and mortar bookshops so it was worth it.
A.
A beautiful building filled with all sorts of genres as well as great staff at the desk helping me find a book!
T. P.
Love Waterstones. Always something of interest. Great book selection plus some well chosen gift ideas, wrapping paper etc. Like the loyalty scheme. Staff are always jolly and efficient.
B. H.
Waterstones in Reading has a good selection of popular fiction and non-fiction books. However, because as a chain it tries to cover all the bases, some non-fiction topics are rather thinly served. Still, it has quite a relaxed atmosphere, with a few comfortable chairs if you want to browse.
V. T.
With the best will in the world I can only give this branch 3 stars. Access is frequently blocked by displays and obstacles. It has great ambience, but anywhere that has whole sections which are accessed by steps cannot get my wheeled support. Saying that, if you want books on crafts, arts, and cookery you are better off visiting Reading Library whose collection is far better.
N. G.
I think Waterstones in Reading is a bit of a gem, it's big enough to have a great selection of books with lots of specialist section, but small enough to feel cosy and inviting. They have great staff who will help you find what you need or suggest suitable alternatives.
L. c.
Gorgeous store. Great staff everything ur ever want from a Waterstones
P. W.
Love this shop, such a great choice of books in a gorgeous old chapel but there are so few staff, the last 2 times I have walked out as the queues so long. Come on, we need book shops to stand up to the A word online!
D. B.
Beautiful building, helpful staff and *so many books!
H. W.
A really large shop, wonderful selection of books. A huge kids section with lots of space for kids to move around.
C. A.
Fantastic children's section, as well as books there are toys and activity sets. Area for drawing and comfy chairs for reading stories. Great staff.
I. M.
Great building. Knowledgeable staff. Reasonably good selection of books including a local section for Reading. People in wheelchairs won't get around upstairs. There is a display about the history of the building when it used to be an Independent Chapel. This was the 100th Waterstone's Bookshop. The childrens section is built over a cemetery.
S. T.
Nice place, needs more information on its interesting history. Shame bookstore not using it for marketing etc.
c. p.
Beautiful library, amazing choice
D. M.
We wanted the travel selection on UK places. We are going to Yorkshire and found a good book to cover Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire moors. There are more on line, but flicking through the pages in your hand is better. And you don't have the aggro to return, but they are cheaper than in store. Having said that, you could order on line and get it cheaper than in store and do click and collect at a nominated store. Saves delivery charge, if you don't want it then ok. But staff are very helpful and are willing to assist, that's why you go to a shop. And you can brouse your heart out befor you buy.
R. G.
Like so many, I just love bookshops, but this Waterstones is very special, the way they have retained the character of the old United Reform ed Church is just wonderful.
T. W.
Due to being a "bilingual illiterate" I don't normally inhabit libraries or bookshops, but the staff in Water stones make it a real pleasure to go in and browse. If I can't find the volume I want, a certain young lady knows exactly where it is ( and will willing fetch it for me ). Many, many thanks for all your help over the past months
G. M. (.
Large building with variety of books, however the more you specialize the less choices you have (IE programming is mixed with mostly basic items such HTML or Windows/iPhone guides). Overall its not bad and any other books I could order online.
w.
Nice store. Can be difficult to find a free member of staff at times. But once found they have a lot of knowledge. Would be good if the website allowed you to search for a book then tell you exactly where in store you could find it.
C. H. T.
good shop
R. K.
This book store is amazing
M. S.
Lovely store, beautiful building. It is kept very tidy and is very peaceful. Huge collection of books available. They can order in any book that isn't in store in a couple days as well.
M. S. Z.
Cold. That shop is always so cold. Still not happy that Kindle, Kobo and Amazon are eroding their business they keep cold temperature in the shop. Nice bookstore but could be better and warner
a. p.
Great bookshop! Fascinating building with multi levels. Helpful and friendly staff who are always ready to assist you with your search for the right book.
C. S.
A magnificent bookshop and awesome space. Friendly and helpful staff. A Broad Street haven.
J. H.
A great store. Nice layout and very big. Staff are super friendly and helpful. They have great signings and talks planned all the time so be sure to ask in-store about what they're up to.
L. S.
PROS:
- quite the location (middle of Broad St),
- good selection of books covering almost everything one might be interested in (they also have a web store),
- big store (ground floor and first floor - nicely divided into different genres),
- children's area,
- helpful staff,
- sometimes they have promos (2 for £x; or you can collect their stamps and get a certain amount off in the end),
- nice selection of toys and some stationery items,
- welcoming; you can sit there and read if you'd like.
CONS:
- expensive books (understandable given the location, but still),
- opens a bit late (could open earlier and close sooner in my opinion).
F. M.
Uber friendly staff. Usual fantastic range of books. Felt very safe (on a busy pre Christmas Sunday afternoon)
N. M.
Really enjoyed visiting this book shop. Its very large, spacious and well staffed. This is what bookshops should be like. Support this rather than booking online. A pleasure to viait
G. W.
Waterstones have a great selection of books, it is a well set up shop.
A. M.
Great bookshop, it has also a very nice and large section of children's books. Surely worthy to pay a visit from time to time!
S. H.
Massive selection of books in a beautiful building, almost like a historic Victorian library. Well laid out and organised.
S. l.
Large Waterstone's, great selection of products. Staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. I have ordered online and picked up from the store within two hours! Excellent customer service.
K. B.
First place I visited when all the non-essential shops opened up. Love this place, it's not the same buying books online.
P. K.
The best bookstore chain ever!
P.
An excellent bookshop in a lovely building. Great staff, always helpful. An expansive range of books to choose from. I could spend hours browsing here.
A. B.
Favourite bookshop with original features from previous use as a chapel. Helpful staff and large selection of books in stock.
Z. X.
Staff were helpful and store has good selection of book
S. H.
This bookshop is in a beautiful building which is worth the visit alone. Great for reference books, but I've always found the layout of the fiction section very confusing, whatever happened to the fiction chart ?
A.
Great selection of books
M. S. (.
Lovely environment with friendly staff. Great selection of books and it has chairs to sit down on the upper floor.

J. S.
Staff very helpful and found a book right away for me
This is a really lovely shop and a pleasure to visit
M. M.
Great selection of books and will get in what you need if not in store.Only problem with the store is navigating round the tables of books in a wheelchair is almost impossible , there is just not enough space.
P. F.
A very beautiful bookshop housed in an old methodist chapel. I go there as much for the building as the books
G. H.
A visit to Waterstones is always a nice experience.
The only way it could improve is if you could sit down while there or even have a coffee while you browse.
M. T.
What can I say... It's a bookshop... I love books. Use the online click and collect, as the discounts might not be in store... However I always check before paying
A. R.
Proper sized Waterstones store with good selection on various themes. Has events from time to time for various types of audience. Staff is friendly and helpful when asked.
K. R. B.
Heaven for book lovers! Also really friendly staff! :)
S. B.
Good selection of books authough they didn't have a large amount of options the more you specialised, design for example had interior design, graphic design, acitecture and typography with very few of each
P. A.
Staff found me the five books on my lists that I wanted. She was very careful to ensure any (possible) contamination was suitably minimised
S. T.
historic building, it's a nice place to visit; yes there is the internet but Waterstones has a real atmosphere and an amazing staircase !
