Had the pleasure of visiting Unconventional Menagerie this weekend and had the best day out in a long time (whilst picking up some pet supplies!). There is a wide variety of animals to see and I was blown away by the conditions of enclosures and how clearly knowledgeable the staff are about them all. It was really refreshing to see how well the staff get on and the rapport they have, it made this socially anxious gal feel much easier asking questions, which were met well and answered! Before coming, I didn’t realise how much rescuing and rehabilitation the staff do for wild animals, that could normally be overlooked by more well known charities. After finding our the lengths staff go to, to help animals and the passion for ensuring they have the best of care, I will never go anywhere else for my pet needs! Genuine massive thank you to the staff members who educated me about every animal I asked about (and I asked about them all LOL) and informed me of the experiences they have on offer too! I will be back very soon for a owl pellet kit and a bird of prey experience!

Staff were brilliant, so knowledgeable and clearly very passionate about the animals. We purchased a pet which we have since phoned the shop for further advice around and they were more than happy to give it. Our children attended the Wild Time session which they LOVED!! Staff presenting the information were great, and truthful. It was so laid back and fun that they didn't feel like they were being educated... which is the best way to learn ☺

So I called in today to see a friend who works there as I have an issue with my hognose. And seeing the bad reviews I have to say please don't comment if you have no idea how to keep these kind of animals! Yes they have a smell as there are a lot! But this does not mean they are in a bad condition! I keep snakes and I'm used to there smell but my partner moans about it! These are not dogs cats or hamsters! Do not judge what you don't know is my opinion!

Took my little boy this afternoon for the half term activity and it was absolutely brilliant, £5 for 90 minutes of fun and education and hands down the best £5 I've spent in a while! My kids had a Pet Shop Experience day yesterday. They loved it and would recommend it. They got to handle the animals and fees them as well as learning lots about them. The staff were brilliant. Their passion and enthusiasm for what they do was clear.

Attended the half term kids club today with my 8 year old and her friend. Absolutely loved the teaching attitude of the staff and their interactions with the children. I think we all learnt something new today about tortoise 🐢 diets, geckos tails and vitamin deficiency in bearded dragons. Great place with unusual reptiles,/animals etc my three year old granddaughter loves it. The proprietor also will visit your club /scouts what ever with some animals and talk about the animals welfare etc. OF course there is a fee for this but well worth it.

I went here and I was surprised at how many of the animals are rescued as I did not know they did this . They had loads of animals I have never seen before even in a zoo like cobras and poisonous lizards which we loved . You can tell they really love the animals there and they knew loads . I asked them about getting a pet fox and they helped me know what that meant and think of a better pet for me . Im surprised at the rude reviews on here because I didn’t think anything bad of the place and it was clean and tidy and mrs Hinch would be proud . Thanks to the boys there for teaching my kids that respect not fear is good for animals. I will be back again to see the meercats .

Visited today with my son. He really enjoyed seeing the range of animals and stroking the tortoise. This place really is doing such a good thing to rescue animals that idiots buy and can't look after. The staff were knowledgeable and approachable. The animals seem content and well cared for. I was impressed with the bioactive set ups which are much more beneficial rather than the typical pet shop set ups. The prices were reasonable and half the price I usually pay at pets at home. Better quality too. Really pleased this place is on the doorstep and I will definitely become a regular customer.

This place is absolutely fantastic! Fun but educational for both adults and children. We visit here fairly often and every time we visit we learn something new. The children are able to get involved with the care of the animals and learn how important it is to care for and respect EVERY type of animal. We will continue to visit and we hope that these fantastic people and animals will be here for a very long time! Thank you for all of the brilliant experiences we have had so far. Went yesterday for one of the children's experiences. What a great afternoon they had. They saw so many different animals (some we have never heard of!) Was so informative for the children and the man running the session was great with all of the children, he really got down to their level which I'd great! I want to start by saying that this is a very hard review for me to write as I was so blown away by the amazing day I had I am struggling to put it into words. Yesterday I went for a venomous snake handling course after visiting the shop previously and learning about the service. The Unconventional Menagerie is an awesome place that rescues animals out of nothing but love in their hearts. They also aim to educate people about these incredible animals. Some of the animals they rescue were due to be destroyed or given up on, some were even considered 'impossible' to deal with but the UM took them in and not only have given them a new chance in life but an amazing quality of life in perfect setups. These animals are now lucky enough to be under the care of Christian and the UM staff who have more knowledge and experience about these species than anyone else I have ever known or seen (I have met a lot of rep keepers, shows, documentaries, books etc). They are truly passionate and dedicated to every individual under their care. ANYWAY THE SNAKE EXPERIENCE I arrived and met with Christian who explained to me the different safety procedures of keeping venomous reptiles from setups, the venom room and safety protocol. I own snakes but the feistiest thing I own is a hognose who is no comparison for who I would be meeting today. I have never used a snake hook before and it is safe to say I was a little nervous and excited. Christian very patiently taught me hook techniques and we practised on non-venomous snakes, I am not the quickest learner and my dexterity isn't great but I felt calm and learned very quickly under Christian's care. He is a fantastic teacher and I soon felt confident with my techniques whilst still having massive respect and caution around these snakes. I lost count of the snakes I met, they were all beautiful and amazing animals, I was told each one's history and what to expect, I was shown the ropes before handling each one. I met and interacted and held several rattlesnakes, spitting cobras, forest cobras, copperheads, sawscale vipers, true cobras, monocled, spectacled you name it. I met a gaboon viper and on some snakes, I was taught how to tube and pin them carefully. My dad and my partner were allowed to watch, take pictures (we even waited for a moment for a few to hood up so we good grab a good picture). I felt VERY safe and went from not having a clue to handling some feisty cobras within the course and with Christian's explanations and demonstrations I felt like I knew exactly what to do each step of the way. I also met a Caiman which I got to hold and saw a green mamba! The course is supposed to be 3 hours but Christian and the staff never made me feel rushed and we actually went over the time by at least an hour (It is hard to keep track of time when being surrounded by all these amazing animals). They even got out a few specific things I wanted to see that wasn't on the list and allowed me to go into the venom room and marvel at the animals before leaving (this was way past the course time I realised after I left). Yesterday beyond a doubt was one of THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE and the staff were so knowledgeable, friendly and patient I felt very safe and very happy. I am 100% going back and doing another course, the value for money is just insane when you think of all the time, money and knowledge not to mention the safety put in place for these sessions. Saying Christian and the staff went above and beyond is a true understatement and I can honestly not recommend this place enough. In a nutshell, if you want to do an experience, buy an animal or do anything with the UM don't think twice, Christian has been working with these animals since a kid as he was taught by family at a very young age and has been working with these animals since a very young age. The wealth of knowledge and experience Christian and the staff have can not be ignored, each animal and customer truly get the best care.

Now..... This IS an interesting store. A pet shop like you've never seen before, in a good way. It's like a cross between a zoo and pet store. They House rescue animals too and are an education centre. On the sales side they have reptiles, fish, birds, rabbits, a range of small furry's, spiders and more. Oh and Tank the big tortoise just roams the shop! Purchased our vivarium from here and also live food from time to time. It's always an interesting visit. Definately worth half an hour of your time.

What an absolutely fantastic place for children (and big kids!) We have been attending the kids club over the holidays and booked onto the fortnightly wildtime sessions and I cannot express how impressed we are with the knowledge of the staff and they experience they are providing for our kids. The kids love the place and after every session they beg me to book them onto the next one! We have all learnt a lot about the animal's they have through talks and interaction and also provide a lot of information regarding the rescue side of the shop that some people may not be aware of. The staff are amazing and have also helped me overcome my fear of snakes which will allow me to let my kids have a snake in the future. I cant thank them enough for the experience they are providing for our kids and it is certainly something you wont get at any other pet shop, sanctuary or zoo! Thank you

Love to visit this place, the work the team do is absolutely fabulous and they deserve a ton of credit. The team are lovely and so knowledgeable in what they do & go above & beyond to educate people, care for animals and rescue those that are in need. The premise is well set out, plenty of space to nosey around and all of the animals are well cared for and looked after. Continue with the fantastic work, can't wait to visit again in the future.

I gave this three stars because the store is great inside I enjoy looking around and seeing all the animals. Their are 2 problems if I may add I bought to bags of sandpaper for my budgie 2 bags costed £13.98 all together even though I didn't say that much when you don't look at the price. The receipt doesn't say the items I got which is ridiculous. The staff were all sitting together and the guy who spoke to me was quite moody. I am not looking to insult the workers as some of them are really kind. I hate the fact that kids run around and they leave animals out on show be cautious with these animals on show don't trip over them lol. I'm gonna be buys sandpaper from somewhere else from now on

EDIT: I thought the fox at the event was theirs, but it wasn't, so I have amended the review :) Saw these guys at the beautiful death exhibition last night and they had quite a few lovely animals with them. I had the pleasure of meeting Elsa the tanuki, Archie the owl and more. My first impressions were actually quite bad. The event was very loud and quite cramped and so the handlers and animals were quite packed in with people swarming the room. The tanuki Elsa was very restless and I was afraid that maybe she was showing stereotypic behaviours from being caged. Soon after I felt a lot better as she was taken out of her cage and had just been over-excited. She was very lovely and eager to meet everyone. PROS-- - The handlers seemed very knowledgeable on every animal and I wish I could have stood there and spoken to them all - There was a in/out system for people to come and look at the animals, without it I'm sure it would have been impossible to get in. - The handlers let people pet the animals and removed them once they had enough, bringing out a different animal. I feel the venue being small and cramped for the animals, but as it was only a few hours and these are advocate animals, I trust the handlers decision on this. It was absolutely lovely to see these beautiful animals and I'd love to visit the shop some day, or attend an event where they do a talk or something. My only complaint is that they didn't bring an opossum, though I might just have had to take it home, lol! - In response to the reply to this: Sorry for my wording, I didn't mean the animals themselves were cramped, just the room was due to the amount of people (which is something you can't have helped). However, there was certainly more than five people in the room at a time, but it might have been people trying to come back in from the next room. This was not intended at all to be a bad review, sorry if it came across as that, and thank you for the clarification on the animals. I guessed they were probably used to the noise and all, they all looked happy and healthy! Also I didn't hold any of the animals, so I think you may have gotten me confused with somebody.

Ok, I thought long and hard about my review...So, here goes.....On entering the shop the meerkats are to the right, before you enter the shop via another set of doors. Have to be honest, the strong ammonia smell was awful... But, they clearly are in the process of improving the shop...They have some amazing animals in there...The shop is huge....They clearly love animals and they are well looked after with printed info on each cage..They are extremely knowledgeable...But, as a 1st time visitor....I cant get the memory of smell of ammonia out my nostrils... This isn't a bad review, but more of a honest 1st time customer review... Knowing all the ins and outs of running a pet shop, I know it's a constant clean clean clean, feed, feed, feed, operation... Maybe they could look to have a ventilation system installed? If affordable.... As I say, my post is not criticising their love, knowledge, and care of these creatures....They are all well cared for.. And the huge shop is well set out... Sorry to say this tho.... Can you try to install some ventilation? I truly respect everything you do for these animals. Well Done..👏👏👏👏 Thankyou for your reply.... I wish you good luck

Amazing facility to visit, the animals are incredibly well looked after, the staff are friendly and super knowledgeable and the products sold are fairly priced/good quality - anything bought to feed my reptiles has been well gut fed and cared for, giving me great peace of mind! All animals kept in store look really well cared for and have beautiful enclosures, perfect for their needs. The staff I've spoken to have a great knowledge of all the animals, but especially the venomous snake, which you can go and see! I'm going to be booking a professional handling course from The Unconventional Menagerie for Christmas for myself, which is super exciting! The staff have been absolutely spectacular in offering advice and support when I have sought out their advice about my own pets, despite not being bought in store. Whilst I understand that is a bit of a cheeky ask, I find many professionals and online forums to be very elitist and cruel and this is definitely not the case with the staff here - I will be eternally grateful for their kindness! If you are looking for anything animal related or to find your new pet, I would whole heartedly suggest The Unconventional Menagerie! And I will be visiting again when I can to see the incredible collection of animals in store!!! :) Thank you TUM for everything - I'll shut up now!

I have not visited personally, but I do know they do a ton of hard work rescuing. Rescuing and caring for animals is not only time consuming, but it costs a lot of money and resources. Additionally, it is emotionally draining. They have a lot of success stories, but sadly not every animal dumped at their door has a happy ending. Do you know how heartbreaking it is to put everything into saving an animal and they don't make it? They care for all animals in need and do not "pick and choose" like some places will. These are people who love animals and do their best to promote responsible pet ownership and respect for all living creatures. The world needs more people with this kind of mentality. Plus, the staff somehow seems to keep a stellar sense of humor, which I very much appreciate.

Excellent emporium that's moved to Longton into a far more suitable spacious building next to the bus stop in Mkt St. So much more than the average bog standard pet shop. These guys actually rescue unusual breeds and educate children & adults in the responsibility we have in providing appropriate care and handling of & to animals! When you enter to your right is an enclosure with a pair of meerkats with their offspring, an absolute delight. Loads of birds, including the most fabulously eye popping pheasant I have ever seen! The caiman enclosure and the delightfully active miniature foxes will be crowd pullers. Large collection of reptiles. Live foods etc. Lots of fish for sale in the fish room behind the till on the left as you come in. Including the incredibly archaic albino Senegal polypterus bichir aka dragonfin eel. (Only the 2nd time I have come across these amazing creatures! But you need at least a 4ft aquarium for them as they can get a mahoosive 2-3ft in length). Don't fall over Tank the free roaming mahoosive tortoise! The staff are very welcoming, friendly, helpful and informative.

My daughter had a 'pet shop keeper experience' in 2018 for her birthday and absolutely loved it! She was busy all day, and enjoyed everything. Highly recommended to anyone considering- and a bargain at the price. They have a huge range of animals, and she was actively involved all day in handling them, feeding them and showing the customers around. She particularly enjoyed feeding the crocodile.

The best place EVER! most amazing animals, genuine lovely people who will go to the end of the earth to save and protect animals. Breed all animals ethically and give the best advice. What Christian doesn't know about animals isnt worth knowing. He has the patience of a saint especially with kids who he so wonderfully teaches and shares his knowledge very passionately.

I haven’t personally seen the place. I know this place from an IG page and I can say that the staff are good at what they do. Set aside the time and energy it consumes to rescue animals, they have great knowledge about them too. I would be very happy to visit the place one day.

Have not personally been, but I bought my dasypeltis from them and so far so good! Owner seems knowledgeable and accomodating, shipping was good, and if all goes well, would love to get more snakes/exotics from them in the future!

Highly knowledgeable staff members who go out of their way to ensure customers know 100% what they’re getting into when purchasing any animal (temperament, cost of keeping and setup etc) They’re always honest and don’t fob you off to buy more things than you actually need and better prices compared to most other pet retailers aswell. If you ever have a problem or need advice give them a ring or message!!! If people don’t realise as well they do wild animals rescue, rehabilitation and release. Wild animals that are kept on site are animal that can no longer survive in the wild due to illness or injury. So they care for the animal for the rest of its life instead of having it put to sleep which most other rescues would do. Thanks for all your help with my animals and also for educating and inspiring future animal keepers too. Keep up the hard work guys, you’re amazing ☺️

Great service, very knowledgeable staff. I went in to ask about plastic clips for my beardie's viv to hold the lights in place, the shop owner could of sold me the rubbish plastic clips but instead told me where I can get some better quality metal ones. They really care about the animals and not just about turning a profit like Pets at home. Would definitely shop there again!

My daughter and her friend had a 9th birthday party on Saturday. I would like to say how fabulous it was. The guy (sorry didn’t get his name) was brilliant, very knowledgeable and importantly held the children’s (and some adults) attention for over an hour. He gave them chance to either hold or stroke the animals where appropriate and did not pressure anyone into holding or touching anything they didn’t want. I would highly recommend them for a party. Brilliant team, and an amazing shop always willing to help animals in need or if in need of advice always willing to give. I bought a everglades rat snake a few months ago and I thought something was wrong with the snake took it Into the shop to ask for help and advice they checked everything over and it was all fine. Brilliant place, excellent service. Having used pretty much every pet shop in stoke at some point, this one has the largest enclosures in stoke. Not sure why people are saying it's grubby or dirty because other than the mess all animals always make it's not. Every time I have been the staff have been busy cleaning out animals, feeding and watering so definitely not a dirty place by any stretch of the imagination.

The Unconventional Menagerie do such amazing work. Their commitment to animals in need is phenomenal, often rescuing animals the “big name charities” refuse to help. The education side of their business is also amazing. I got my axolotl from these guys and he’s been awesome! Do not hesitate to check them out.

Fantastic pet shop, with staff being extremely knowledgeable. Scrap that first sentence, it's much more than a pet shop - the staff are genuinely passionate about animals and also take in, rescue and look after injured and abandoned animals. Due to rescues, don't expect a shop smelling of roses, as naturally foxes etc do not do unicorn farts smelling of pot Puri! Go into the shop with an open mind, enjoy speaking to the knowledgeable staff, take a look at the many different and unique animals they have, find out about the animals stories, but more importantly have respect for the amazing work that the staff do!!! If you want to simply burn money in a bright shop with colourful posters, clinical enclosures and don't really care about the history of your future pet, this isn't the place for you! If you want a pet that has been handled and cared for with staff that will provide you with good advice at the time of purchase and in the future, the Unconventional Menagerie is the shop for you. Many thanks for the life skills that you have taught my children about looking after and caring for a wide variety of animals.

Yes the smell is strong when you walk in but due to the animals in there what do people expect? i visited for frozen reptile food but had a quick nosy while i was there and there was a lovely big lizard roaming round and lots of other animals. will definitely be back

Absolutely love visiting this shop to see all the exotic/unusual animals. My niece and nephew had Chris (sorry if I've got your name wrong) come along to their party where he brought along about 15 different animals including millipedes, snakes, tortoise, snakes and my favourites the meerkat and tanuki. All the kids and parents enjoyed stroking or holding the animals along with the extensive knowledge that was given about them. If someone was looking for an unusual party experience I would highly recommend these guys. Keep up the good work.

I had a party for my twins yesterday and just enquired if this amazing place did anything for parties which they do....the lovely knowledgeable man came out with 15 different animals, the kids loved its they could hold most of them but were able to touch all but 1 which was amazing, all through the talk the man(who i cant remember his name sorry 🙈) put the welfare of the animals before entertaining the kids. Every animal looked healthy and well looked after and not 1 was nasty noone get injured noone was forced to hold anything it was an amazing party the kids and the adults enjoyed it. I take my kids to the shop quite often as they love looking at all the animals, yes the shop does smell but theres a sign on the door and and after the party and been able to hold a tanuki they do smell but they are very clean and well kept (it was very cuddly and I wanted to take her homeas she was so cute 😍) I have never seen any of the animals looking sad or not kept well and all the staff are very polite too, the kids are already asking to go back to the shop to go and see the animals again. Thank you very much for the party and for the information that you gave all the kids about the animals. I would highly recommend if you want a great party that will be talked about for along time then book these amazing people. Xx

This shop is brilliant. All the enclosures are spacious enough for the animals. All the pets are in view and you can get them out and cuddle with them. The staff are well educated and very friendly. Also the place is very cheap. its a very clean place with lots of animals to snuggle up with.

I came into the store yesterday just after opening and the staff were busy tending to the animals i wanted to see the rodents and the room was closed for cleaning but christian said it was ok to go ahead and go in. All the animals were super friendly i stroked a few rabbits and some mice also some ferrets. All of the amimals had enrichmemt in their enclosures and i like the way the focus on selling animals not just trying to sell everything when shops sell too many cages toys and things it often leads to impulse purchases. Christain talked to me at great length to see if i understood the requirements of the pet i went to view and we had a great chat (i held him up from his cleaning) for about an hour he was very helpful and is going to email me when the right pet for me comes into store. You can tell by talking to him he is dedicated to his animals and to the wildlife call outs he is asked to do. Ive only seen the negative reviews today coning here to leave my review if you have concerns i would always suggest you talk to any shop selling livestock as reviews are not monitored and if your genuine concern is for the welfare of the animals then the best and most effective way to resolve it is to say there and then only met christian yesterday but im sure he is approachable enough to talk through any concerns people may have. So all in all not your normal pet shop if your after something a little more unusual then definitely go take a look the foxes are beautiful the massive tortoise and the meerkats make it well worth a visit. A breath of fresh air that they educate customers too. Well done guys. 😀

They really care about animals and don't just sell them. They rescue, they educate and interact with them. What I will say to anyone after reading the reviews... Friendly, approachable and informative staff who deliver a service to children's clubs and schools educating children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to meet exotic creatures. When you enter the shop you are greeted by an enclosure of meerkats which are incredibly enchanting and my young grandson was captivated by them for a good 20 minutes before we got deeper in. Foxes, tanuki, giant tortoise, turtles, mahoosive snakes and other reptiles, amphibians, rodents, birds and fish. Many of the shop's inhabitants that are not for sale have been rescued and brought back to health. The animals are well cared for and all the enclosures are clean. The only odours are those of the animals themselves and this is to be expected and is not unpleasant. We were very impressed and enjoyed our experience here. Well worth a visit! They also run a hotel for your unconventional pets too. However, this excludes your average dogs and cats. A short walk away from Hanley Bus Station.
