M. R.Set a couple of hours aside for a peaceful enjoyable experience.
Every year the kids are excited when we visit Rainbow Ceramics because they enjoy painting new things for their rooms. The anticipation of waiting a week to get them back after being fired in the kiln is equally exciting. It’s amazing to see how vibrant the colours are when they’re glazed.
Don’t think Rainbow is just for kids - it’s not. A great place to make something bespoke for the home, many adults frequent the shop to build a collection.
It’s not cheap, but for what you get it’s well worth it. Just remember that you have to wait a week for the end product. Not staying in York? - they’ll post it for you (at your cost).

E. A.I've been going here regularly since I was a uni student and I'm 27 now! I adore anything creative and love pottery painting anyway but Rainbows has always been extra special to me.
I'm someone who struggles with anxiety, mental health issues and sensory issues and I've always found Rainbows to be so lovely and welcoming. It's always a place I've felt safe and comfortable and I never feel too overwhelmed. I feel like they are always supportive, accommodating and friendly and this atmosphere really makes the experience.
I forever love going here and always enjoy the range of things that they have on offer to paint. I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful place so close to me.
Also- there are always cute dogs chilling out (staff member's dogs) which is deffo a plus- please see the photo for proof!
S. C.We had my daughter’s birthday party here when we first moved to York and we were so pleased we did. The area of the party was a great space for a bunch of small ones. They had lots of fabulous painting to do and lovely snacks to eat. The staff were phenomenal and I mean phenomenal because they love doing what they do and they were fantastic with the kids.
You won’t regret going there either in a party, for a bit a time on your own or with just a friend. The experience I can guarantee will be brilliant.
M. S.Lovely little place, I came when my daughter was 4 months old and painted a mug with her footprint for father's Day, and then again when she was one to paint two plates for her grandparents. It's always a fun day out, I have a really good time and the price of the paint etc is all included in the price of the mug/bowl/plate or whatever you're painting which is fab as there's no hidden costs. It feels really honest and the staff are lovely. Will definitely come again!
Only thing feedback wise is I think it could be useful to have highchairs so you have somewhere to put your baby or toddler while you paint, if you're doing baby prints?
C. N.I’ve always had a super time at Rainbow Ceramics, whether I’m taking my children there to paint something for fun or I’m there on one of the adults only evenings working on something for myself. There’s always a brilliant selection of items to paint and the staff always go above and beyond to help make the visit a positive one. They really thought creatively during the pandemic and my family were so chuffed to pick up the take awake kits and paint at home. Brilliant customer service and their coffee isn’t bad either!

Our latest visit was before Christmas with our newborn baby to make gifts for family members - the staff were so attentive and even did the foot prints for us so that they stayed neat on the pots and I could hold the baby comfortably. Can't wait to take my daughter here when she is old enough to do her own painting 🎨💕

The staff are all so lovely and welcoming, they're around if you need them but don't fuss around.

J. G.Absolutely amazing, great choice, no pressure on time aloud while creating your master piece. Staff friendly and so helpful, they make a lovely cappuccino too. I saw the staff open and close doors for customers to help them gain entry to shop with prams etc. Cannot fault this little shop and the staff. I would 100% recommend a visit to this shop and create fantastic memory's. Very therapeutic and relaxing. I loved evet minute, actual hours I spent there.

C. V.This is one of the nicest places in York to visit. My personal experience has been amazing, I have been going with my little boy since he was 4 months old and he's now 5. They have a wide variety of things to do. They do baby first hand a feet prints, you can do Christmas baubles which is great with babies as the staff told me the automatically curl their hands qhen it touches the baubles. I have hand print cups for grand parents, a plate with both of our hands on, other christmas decorations and still much more to do.
The staff are so friendly and will help you if you need it but might be a little wait as they get busy.
I have also seen they do adult sessions where you and your friends can join in and create some pottery art work of your choosing. I couldn't recommend this place enough.

One afternoon my Wife and I sat down at Rainbows and lost ourselves in a relaxing way painting a commemorative vase to celebrate our wedding plus a flower pot for my new Mother in law.
Lovely staff and nice coffee too.
If you're thinking about having a go I would strongly recommend it.
We had our vase delivered home and it was packed with the utmost care so arrived safely.
F. H.Absolutely lovely pottery studio. So welcoming to babies and kids, as well as running great adult only evenings with a lovely calm atmosphere. They have a nice selection of drinks and little snacks too, which is always a bonus.
If you aren't comfortable going into places post pandemic, they also do paint at home options, which come with plenty of paint to allow you to complete your project.

Every year we paint a family bauble for our Christmas tree, our children have designed their own plates and cups, we have footprints from when they were both 5 weeks old and we even got a take home kit during lockdowns. They are fantastic for when you want to spend a few hours being creative on an adults night or if you want something beautiful as a memory for a little one. K. B.I had been to Rainbows for my birthday parties as a child, and after recently moving back to the area, wanted to get involved with their ‘paint from home’ service during this difficult time!
My family had a great experience! Although it would have been lovely to paint in the studio (which has now reopened and we are planning on doing just that!), everything we needed was provided for us - paints, palettes and brushes all packed up along with our items!
Before taking our items in to be fired, I asked the owner if it would be at all possible to bring along a few small items I had made myself to be fired, as I am a hobbiest potter. The owner very kindly agreed, which was fantastic and really appreciated, especially during these hard times which I understand must add additional stress to independent businesses!
This is a great place and we are all so pleased with all the pieces we got back!! I would recommend to anyone (and I do!!) and we will definitely be returning.

A fantastic time was had by both children, myself and my wife and we look forward to picking up the ceramics we decorated in a weeks time.
The set up here was amazing. Easy to understand and very extensive. The staff are also fantastic and extremely helpful. I over heard some of them talking about how much they loved it when it was as busy as it was today. Their enthusiasm was infectouse.
Also got a glimpse of the shop puppy!

V. T.Perfect Kids Party venue! I had my daughters 7th birthday party here. I can't recommend it highly enough. My daughters friends had a lovely time and the staff did a great job helping them to paint their chosen item. They painted unicorns, cats and dogs but there was lots of choice including many more animals, letters or cupcakes. The girls found it hard to choose because there were so many! They have a long party table at the back of the studio which had lots of little hooks where the kids can put their coats. You can buy drinks for the children or they are happy for you to bring your own squash. If you book a children's birthday party here you will not be disappointed.

L. R.Took my two children there today- to explain my daughter was off sick from school (was sent home on mon) so couldn't go back for 48 hours despite being fit and well today. When I walked in we were greeted by two lovely assistants and an older woman which I later found out was the owner. The owner was rude, questioning why my daughter wasnt at school and telling me to be careful around here and basically giving me dirty looks. How she has a successful business I dont know, it must be down to her staff. Overall my children enjoyed it but wont be going again except to pick up our pottery next week.

I am happy with the response from the owner and in hindsight understand why she was worried after she has explained. This was the only thing that scuppered our experience, I cant fault the rest of the staff, I just wish the owner had explained at the time what her concerns were. It is a lovely place in general to take children especially if you are at a loose end

F. C.First time visit to rainbows and loved it. Took my 9 week old baby, the staff were so friendly and helpful. Her foot prints came out great, the lady (Sorry didn't catch her name, but she had lots of cool tattoos) was so helpful, did her prints perfectly and sketched out the letters on the mugs for me to trace over as I am not very artistic. They sat us where we had lots of room with the pram and did not rush us at all. Will definatly go back again soon. There was loads of different pots and ceramics to choose from. Would be great for a kids party too. Was lovely and warm inside which nade jr very welcoming.

Templates, sponges, paints, brushes, design books for ideas and everything you would need to decorate your chosen item was available. Prices were reasonable. There was no pressure to hurry up or buy more. We were there for over 4 hours, but did a lot . I will be doing it again.

If you're feeling down or need to have some rest or just have the need to delve into your creativity, rainbows is your answer and the staff are so welcoming, helpful, invested in their customers and create such a positive atmosphere! Don't miss out!
