I'm a novice when it comes to buying outdoor equipment and Yusuf used the information I provided on future hikes I planned to do and my budget to narrow down the options to two really good boots. Went in to look at and try on backpacks for a hiking trip and was dissuaded from buying anything too big or expensive by the very helpful owner. He also stopped me spending an unnecessary £25 on a hydration system - "If you've got a 1l water bottle that'll do you" he informed me after hearing that I wasn't going to be hiking in the sahara.
So, top advice, a good selection of gear and I left with a good bag at a good price.

I came across this shop and it has everything you could need and more. Plus it’s all really good quality, carefully selected stuff with prices ranging for the “every now and then” camper to the more serious campers out there. W.Just bought a pair of walking boots today and I was asked whether I was a serious buyer when I came in which was fair enough because too many people (including one of my sons) try on clothes in shops first before buying them online, so he charges £10 for advice if customers tell him they are just looking. I think this is a fair deal. He answered my questions honestly and in detail, some of which I knew already because I had done my research. I also witnessed how he dealt with another customer's list of equipment needed for his son's Duke of Edinburgh outing, telling him how one piece might be more suitable than another, even if it was cheaper. So no problems, I felt I got good service with a fair and reasonable deal. Maybe, CF, it had something to do with your approach.

P. G.I visited Outdoor Emporium looking for a replacement pair of trail shoes and found not only shoes but friendly and knowledgeable service and a decent price. The shop is right next to Camden Road overground station and a five minute walk from Camden Town underground station and has a good selection of outdoor clothing and equipment packed into a relatively small space. Having searched for a particular pair of Salomon shoes in the right size for about a year, I've finally found a store that stocks half sizes - something that the larger chains seem incapable of doing. I could have ordered them online but I prefer to try shoes on before buying. I had a browse through the other stuff on sale and noted that the prices were certainly competitive with larger stores and so will definitely visit next time I want to pick up any more gear in the future. Also worth noting is that Outdoor Emporium do have an online store and the prices are marginally lower than in the shop (not factoring in postage).

S. B.Although I do a lot of my outdoor shopping online, there are some things which simply can't be bought without the valued advice of an independent outdoor shop. I wanted to buy a pair of boots and hiking jacket from Alpenstock in Stockport but was disappointed to find out that the owners had retired. As I work in London, I Googled to find that only one independent outdoor shop exists in the city. I visited and couldn't believe how helpful Yusef was in trying on new boots and a new coat. I simply wouldn't be able to get this kind of personal service if I shopped online and I have often found that the cheaper chains are staffed by shop assistants with little or no experience of the merchandise they are selling. If you are looking to carefully choose a piece of apparel you really can't go far wrong here. These shops are dying out and it really is worth paying a little more for something that will last and be a great investment. I got a great insight into the industry from Yusef and it is really sad to see that there are fewer of these shops now. My last pair of boots lasted me over 5 years and that was because of the expert advice I received and I expect this pair to to last me as long. In the long run, it really does work out cheaper than buying on the internet. I hope the Outdoor Emporium continues to thrive and that the outdoor community values its knowledge and experience.

N. B.The chains cannot compete with this hidden gem. Don't be fooled by the modest exterior or slightly off the beaten track location. The guy who runs the shop knows his trade, all the best gear and a wealth of experience. Honestly come here first, save yourself the trouble of schlepping round town comparing the chains, they're OK and will offer discounts but this is excellent and also has a good range of discounted items. I guess the thing I've valued most over the 15 or so years I've been using this shop is the benefit I've gained every time I've followed the shop guys advice. Highly recommended.

They stock a wider selection of very good quality gear at reasonable prices and remind you of your rights regarding warranty on those goods. They are really helpful when you are unsure of what you are looking for but are mindful when you are sticking to a budget and often give an extra discount. This is a small independent business that has stood the test of time and I expect will continue to do so.

Yusuf was incredibly helpful and patient with us, allowing us to try different makes and sizes and giving us time to make our decision. Also, I have to mention that I have small feet and my experience at many stores has been that they tell me they can't help because they don't carry my size. Yusuf, on the other hand, took a chance and gave me a pair that ran small even though it wasn't the same size I usually wear. It worked! The shop is easy walking distance from Camden Town tube and is a clean, well laid out and deceptively spacious shop but the icing on the cake for me was the excellent customer service. This could not have been accentuated more than when very recently, one of the walking boots, of a pair I had purchased exactly a year ago, came apart at the sole, resulting in a very wet foot, as I was out walking when it happened. The store and its owner are absolute gems. Superb and extensive knowledge & fair advice, all delivered with a charming, friendly and helpful approach. Very good prices as well. Moreover you wil find some niche quality products in store that are generally only on sale on the internet, like the superb Zamberlan boots I was looking for.
While no independent can match the occasional loss-leading promotions the big chains use to squeeze out small competition, they can't match the knowledge and experience an independent like this can provide. You can't rely on brand names anymore, since many have been bought by large concerns and just use famous names to rebadge their inferior products. Even some names who haven't gone down this path reduce quality to save costs and maintain profit.
This store knows the business inside out and will be able to tell you what is and isn't good quality these days. If you are making an expensive one-off purchase, or need quality gear for a specialised purpose and don't have the time or the inclination to spend days researching on the web it is well worth visiting.
Make this retailer your first port of call - it would be a tragedy if a store like this was crushed by the impersonal retail chains.
D. J.I had a pleasant experience when I visited this shop recently looking to replace a super pair of Zamberlan boots I have had for years and that I have used on treks all over the world. I wouldn't buy anything else. According to the internet, this is the only Zamberlan stockist in the London area. The gentleman who dealt with me was friendly, knowledgeably and patient and they had what I was looking for. What more can one ask for. This shop is a nice find and highly recommended.

I went along to Outdoor Emporium today. Yusuf, the bloke in the shop, was so helpful; i knew i wanted a pair of Zamberlans and I liked the Tofanes and i thought knew my size and Yusuf let me try them, then he spent half an hour making me try on different sizes in different boot styles to make sure i was making the right choice for my foot size and width. His knowledge and attention to detail was superb and in the end I got the Tofanes. Great boots, amazing service. I walked out of the shop in a brand new pair of Zamberlan boots and I'm sitting at home, writing this, and wearing them like slippers. Highly recommended.
If anyone knows where I can get a pair of Diemme Tibets re-soled with vibram Motagne then let me know, as id love to keep them as a spare pair.

Yusuf, the manager of the shop, is friendly, patient and he has a superb knowledge of outdoor gear. He always listens carefully to what I actually need, explains what products are available on the market with their pros and cons and then recommends the most suitable brands and products depending on my needs and budget. I have not once regretted any of my purchases from Outdoor Emporium and I am still using several of the items purchased years ago.
The shop is a bit of a Tardis – stocks a good selection of competitively priced products and brands for camping and hiking. Yusuf also ordered stuff for me several times when I was looking for something they do not normally stock.
I took a friend to Outdoor Emporium a while back as she usually struggles with buying walking shoes. We spent hours – literally – in the shop. I was losing the will to live, but Yusuf remained patient throughout the entire time, did not pressurise my friend at all and recommended her to sleep on the decision and come back another day to make sure that she was happy with her choice.
I would highly recommend Outdoor Emporium in Camden. The shop is next to Camden Road overground station and only a few minute walk from Camden Town underground station. It is a family owned small independent shop. You are guaranteed to get personal service and a completely different shopping experience from what you get in the big chains. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed :)
