Beautiful and tranquil with the swans and ducks and wildlife. Summertime can be busy but lovely as many furry friends come along
Great wee cafe (pations) staff are wonderful and the food it great and Magic Cycles for bike hire and repair and their hot chocolate is amazing. Three is also a new florist and the gift shop is great.

Lovely harbour. Only been refurbished in 2021 making it a straight through path from whatever direction you’re heading (Clydebank or Dumbarton). You access it by car, cycle, foot. Local train station only 1/4 mile away. There’s signs all over now telling you different parts of history. One wall takes you from 1763 when plans were being designed for the canal up to the refurbishment that finished in 2021. There’s a cafe for a wee bite to eat and the views from both ways on the Clyde are stunning.

Another hidden gem 💎
Located at the foot of Kilpatrick Hills which offer stunning views of Bowling Harbour, the River Clyde and beyond..
Really worth exploring this cracking walking/cycle route. Its a beautiful place to lose your self and enjoy mother nature some cute friendly wide life .
There is a cafe and cycling shop, bonus point, parking around is relatively easy and only 40 min from Glasgow central.
And its a Perfect place to start your journey north towards Loch Lomond.
D.
Scenic area. This is where the Fourth and Clyde canal meets the river Clyde and where the river opens up into the sea. Lots of sunken and unused boats about but even more used boats to be seen. There's a cafe here and a cycle shop. The Fourth and Clyde canal walkway/cycle path comes right upto and past here depending on which way you go. It's quite close to the pub in Bowling if that takes your fancy. Nice.
M. S.
Lovely place to visit and with the associated Bowline development and cycle/walkway improvements. Watch out though as it's locked up at 15:45 (presumably these are winter months hours).
S. S.

Lovely slow Scotland experience very peaceful yet just of main road to Highlands only 10 mins from Glaagows west end estates
B. B.
A cute little harbour, that has a “boat graveyard” to the side of it. To access the “graveyard” you are better accessing it via the train station- cross the stair and go though the fence, follow the grass path and you’ll pass a pier on the right. Be careful with your footing as there are lots of loose rocks. You can walk down the middle of the Clyde on this stone walkway. Make sure to check the tide times as if you arrive at the wrong time you will miss most of the sunken ships.
A. R.
Really nice spot for a walk, run or cycle. Good parking and overflow parking provided. Decent little cafe for a drink and a bite to eat.
J. B.
Very nice and unique place to visit , have a coffee or meal at Paton Place or even better get a coffee from Magic Cycles
H. M.
My ancestors had a ship yard here creating the first Puffer boats and I wanted to visit. It was beautiful, much more than expected, lovely cafe with funny lovely staff. Spent some time there and felt realy relaxed. Great place to stop if going up north. 🙏❤️🕊
J. M.
The marina area is very pleasant with well maintained grassed areas and it's interesting to see the moored boats. A small gift shop and a very nice cafe serving light lunches and snacks.
However, the beach area is very dirty and doesn't seem to be maintained at all. A real pity as it could be a pleasant picnic spot.
e. b.
Beautiful morning, stunning scenery and the waverly sailing down the Clyde
A. G.
Beautiful wee stop off on the way to Helensburgh. Love having a wee walk around the harbour. The shipwrecks are great... gutted the tide wasn't out though to get some better pictures.
C. W.
Glorious! April sunshine 🌞. People out on bikes and enjoying a walk and some sitting in boats. We picked up some lunch from the very friendly and efficient café and took our brown paper bag to a spot near the canal lock 40. Well cared for. Good vibes. Amazing views.
J. H. B.
Had a lovely day
A lot of historical facts worth a visit

C. B.
Nice views and great pit stop while cycling!

Bowling Harbour is at the junction of the Forth and Clyde Canal and the River Clyde. Approximately 9 miles from Glasgow city centre. Popular with cyclists and walkers. Tranquil and scenic.
K.
1st visit to UK canal boats and the locks at Bowling Harbour😊
W. W.
Sooo historic. I could just see the queen mary coming down the water on its launch day. Its immensely sad to see what was a fully working harbour that brought in so much to scotland just lie there and crumble I to the waters. The ghostly vessels beached in the harbour is a reminder of what was once a bustling thriving area. It is now a dangerous site accessible when you cross the railway bridge and enter through a wee white gate just left as you come down the stairs. Not accessible to anyone in a wheel chair. Just a short walk away from the harbour is a world war 2 lookout pillar box which was interesting to see. On this walking trail you can walk right up under the Erskine bridge. Pictures attached. Please like my reviews and like my photos. Thankyou
A. W.
Lovely place - quite a lot of money has been spent in it and it's now a very nice place to go for a walk.

Lovely area for cycling and walking. Situated on cycle path from Glasgow to Loch Lomond. Nice walks for dogs along the Saltings with good views of Erskine Bridge and Clyde. Have to be careful on the beach as it is littered with broken glass.

j. m.
Great place for easy walking and cycling. Coffee, hot and cold snacks available. Key for toilets available to borrow from shops.
B. F.
Brought my boat over from the east coast through the canal. Stayed at the kelpies, the Falkirk Wheel and bowling harbour. Bowling was by far the best location. After 5 the gates are locked and it's like being in your own private marina. I loved the place and was sorry to leave. The lock keepers were very friendly and did everything possible to look after you.
G. K. 0.
Really beautiful view of the distance here is a picture.
W. S.
Great walk along canal to the harbour, went on a sunny day so very busy. Views are beautiful and picturesque.

F. M.
Another great cycle out to Bowling Harbour, great for the views and theres also a cafe fir hot beverage and bite to eat.
I.
Small but very cute Harbour beside which is the entrance to the Bowline, a partially raised walkway and cycling path to Loch Lomond. It would've been nice to have some cafes nearby, still there are a few shops and, very importantly, public toilets.
A. M.
It's a nice place to stop on the bicycle track , it has a little role of shops built into the viaduct and one of them is a bicycle shop where you can food, they sell bikes and accessories and fix punctures, energy bottled water and high energy bars. It's a beautiful place to stop for a break 👍🏴
A. F.
A wee hidden gem right on the Clyde. Great cafe and cycle and gift shops right at the entrance.

What a great little spot to visit. A bit tucked away so you need to be looking for it ... but once you find it ..wow .. what a find. Beautiful sheltered harbour; wonderful views; bike hire; wonderful gift shop .... but don't take a picnic, the cafe is amazing - you'll definitely want to lunch there, then stay for afternoon tea!!
N. M.
Lovely wee collection of shops and cafes on the edge of the water.

S. S.
Lovely place for a walk or cycle with the kids.
N. T.
The regeneration going on here can be a little off putting but the progress being made makes me very excited for what next summer will be like. A lovely spot to go and sit by the water, grab a coffee and a slice of cake at Paton's Place and have a lovely time
J. M.
I live in walking distance to the harbour, its a lovely place to go for a walk, there is a coffee/cake shop, and a few others it's a beautiful place to sit and chill. The old railway line is now a lovely walk /cycle way and an improvement to the area,
J. E.
Went with my son and grandson. Been a lot of work done since the last time I was there. Wish I had taken photos. The experience was spoilt slightly by the presence of a crowd of young people swigging from beer cans and bottles of vodka. Granted it was hot and folks are entitled to enjoy themselves but as per usual the few spoil it for the rest by leaving rubbish behind
L. K.
Lovely peaceful place beautiful views
K. W. N.
One of my favourite places, lovely walks, very peaceful and nice wee cafe to grab a cuppa after!
p. c.
Nice place to chill after walking along the canal

A. G.
Patons cafe is amazing. Food and service are second to none.
S. M.
Coffee shop great value and Lovely ladies.
F. G.
Really surprised by this place. Tranquil and interesting. The forth and clyde canal ends here, merging into the river clyde through a final lock. Well worth a visit.
F. N.
Great walk, great views.
R. M.
Magic cycles are the best bike repair shop in the west of Scotland. Wouldn't take my bike anywhere else. Ian is super fair and doesn't mess you about, is just up front and honest. Will save you a fiver if he can. Paton's cafe is amazing, the club Sandwich is a favourite for sure, but the iced coffee has the perfect balance between being strong and refreshing on a hot day!
All in all Bowling harbour is definitely one of the up and coming spots to watch for the future!
J. M.
Great place for walking and riding
K. m.
It is beautiful here and so easy to get to walk along and see some of the abandoned ships. I walked from the station to the harbour and further and when I got back to the station I noticed a man taking his dog through a gate at back of the station at the balloch end and it takes you along to properly see the ships and down to the water. Great for passing some time and having a look around and if its a nice day you can sit and relax by the water. I couldn't believe how easy it was to actually get to these and see these. Great day out before heading towards loch lomond and highly recommended.
J. O.
Bike shop, coffee shop, toilets and great views!
J.
Great destination to cycle to if you don't want to go too far from Glasgow, but if you're planning on going further (to Loch Lomond perhaps) then it's a great pitstop! Small cafe and bike shop makes it feel very warm, I always stop here for a while before I continue!
A. G.
Love it, great walks 🚶♂️
T. B.
Great wee Dugs cafe for a cup-a. And to see the Waverley, great day
s. m.
Well kept and looking really nice since the last time I was down here, 15yrs ago... my sister and her partner had booked to stay in a boat for the evening and I decided to go and have a look before she drove down parking wasn't an issue I saw the boat and then had a wander around and then along the canal tow path it was well kept and relatively litter and dog mess free a pleasant walk was had and everyone we walked passed was friendly saying hello. Worth a visit for a nice easy walk.
G. M.
Lovely place to visit and walk round, though it's currently quite disrupted with all the work being carried out and they've removed so many lovely trees, but left all the destructive, strangling ivy to remain on the dead and dying trees.
One of the main issues here are cyclists. You have to constantly look behind you when walking, as they speed by so fast and hardly any alert you by bells. Myself and my family have all nearly been hit by cyclists over the years here. What bugs me is that as pedestrians we apparently need to watch out for them, rather than their taking responsibility.
There's a nice selection of small shops that are definitely worth your time to have a look at.
In summary: Worth a visit, but watch out for thoughtless cyclists.
R. M.
A lovely cycle ride from Balloch to Bowling, initially beside the River Leven. Bowling basin was bathed in sunshine, with stunning views up & down the Clyde. I enjoyed sitting & relaxing by the canal, watching the world go by. An added bonus is that the cafe there is now open for take-aways. A great place for a picnic.
A. D.
A lovely spot for a walk or cycle along the canal. A few shops and a cafe. Nice to just sit and enjoy the views down the Clyde

F. A.
Lovely little harbour, with beautiful canalside walk. We were lucky with the weather so had lunch al fresco at Paton's Place and then visited the lovely little gift shop Paton's Parcel, followed by a walk through Bowling into Old Kilpatrick.

Love Bowling Harbour. Beautiful views of the Clyde estuary and a lovely canal path to walk with plenty of wildlife. Saw a fox, swans, ducks and three herons today 😍

Love visiting here as there are many different types of boats parked up with some people actually living in them,I've knowen this place from when I was a lad as we used to visit someone living in an x torpedo boat who took newly built ships on a trial runs for the shipbuilders up & down the Clyde, used to take me & my mate sometimes, it was just excellent.
A. A.
Great place to chill out...
I. M.
The river and the boats look amazing and the coffee shop and cycle shop are very busy which is good for the area very popular with cycle lists and walkers so calm and peaceful great day out.
J. F.
Lovely walk. When there lots to see, lively views of hill and clyde , cafe for a cuppa and there's a few shops too .
G. J.
Had a delicious lunch with friends at Patons Place then had a browse around their lovely gift shop, Patons Parcels. Beautiful location and lots of great walks, highly recommended.
V. N.
Bowling basin is good but people live there in boats now and they lock you in after seven o'clock. Some old guy that thinks he is a security guard does not even notify you. Your car is locked in the harbour until you can get someone with a key to help you and they are very abrupt with you. They have signs on the gates that you can't see as they gates are open.they use security signs of a security company they says they have nothing to do with the area. They need to address their signage at bowling harbour apart from the live in boat people it is a nice place
S. K.
There is a nice little place to have a break have a coffee or tea 🍵
L. S.
Woooow we have been surprised by the place.... such a worth to cycle it or even go for a walk and enjoy all the nature, mixture of Colours between the mountains rivers and classy harbour along side also the Erskine view on the back is stunning
G. T.
Popped in for a coffee and scone mid ride. All excellent but the jam was a particular high point. Better than Fortnum & Masson!
J. L.
Great place to spend an hour or two not like a marina, small on site cafe with limited seating.
A. M.
An amazing little place. It has a couple of shops also a boat yard where I keep my boat in the summer months. Staff are really friendly too. Would recommend anyone to swing by

Great place to walk with the dogs. Urgently needs an affordable dog friendly cafe. Not great in the rain as there is nowhere to hide from it. Magic cycles give excellent service.

l. m.
Idyllic retreat from the city pollution, would be great for picnics, walkers & cyclists alike.Keep toddlers on tight rein for obvious reasons.Needs a place open for coffees & snacks on a regular basis but difficult to sustain with midweek low footfall.
S. M. D.
Enjoyed a Scottish breakfast at the cafe .
Had a bit of a stroll through the woods along the river bank .Worth a visit ,and some interesting maritime history about this area of Scotland
S. M.
Lovely area for walking & some

Lovely stop on cycle route
E.
Lovely place for a walk with good views of the River Clyde, and old kilpatrick hills, great facilities here smashing new cafe open, gift shop, cycle repair and dog grooming salon. Worth a visit
A. A.
I went for a pleasant bike ride along the canal tow path this morning, terminating at Bowling before heading back. It has been quite sometime since I last visited Bowling harbour, which makes the improvements all the more noticeable. It has gone from looking a bit down at heal, to quite dapper. All it needs is the harbour masters building to be converted into a gastro pub and perfection will have been achieved!
D. S.
a wee bit of reconstruction going on (July 2016) so some areas out of bounds, but a great place to have a picnic, locals are friendly too :)
Next time I'll start my journey at Falkirk and end up here
a. M.

Lovely local walk from old kilpatrick along canal way. Great cafe at harbour for refreshments with outdoor marquee
A. H.
Easy walking along the canal walk/cycle way . Good views down the Clyde at the canal end . Parking at present is quite limited due to construction works .
Varied aquatic birds along the canal creates interest along the way .
L. G.
Great walk along the canal and under the Erskine Bridge, makes you feel tiny. Look across the Clyde. Just missed dear in the community nature park. Takes you right into Glasgow or just walk round Bowling area. Takes an hourish. Nice evening stroll.
J. M.
Not a lot to do here. The area is being upgraded. Railway arches are being converted to retail premises (July 2017). There is a cycle hire shop. So you can cycle along the Forth & Clyde Canal. Or head to Loch Lomond. Not really suitable for fishing or bathing.
K. G.
This is a great little area if you disregard the rubbish and occasional neds drinking but if you get the area quiet it can be a great little bit to unwind and let the dogs run around

The year was 1971 Apollo 14, 3rd US manned Moon expedition lands, Frank Mauro Alan Shepard & Edward Mitchell (Apollo 14) walk on Moon for 4 hrs, But more to the point my Uncle Arthur (Arthur Hughes) from Old Kilpatrick had just welded the last section on the Erskine bridge, a masterpiece of British engineering and construction. This was also the year that my Dad took me fishing for the first time to bowling basin.
I was 9 years old and can still remember the excitement of that day, even the smell in the air and no, not the smell of oil and diesel but of the wild flowers growing at the side of the foot path and the wonderful sound of the birds chirping in the summer sun. Back then there were lots of fish in the canal, perch, roach pike E.T.C. You know it was amazing we started catching fish using chewing gum for bait one after the other was caught this way.
As I grew up and eventually got married and had my own children, (Daughter Helen and Son Gary) I would often take them on a summer’s night along to the Bowling basin for a picnic and to look at the old boats, The boats always fascinated me especially the half submerged skeleton ships in the harbor many a photographer could be seen snapping away creating a master piece as the sunset along the Clyde blanketing the silhouette of the old ships, yes the old days were the best wonderfully memories of my Father and kids growing up also the fact that although there have been a lot of changes at the Bowling basin the character and the old worldly magic are still there.
Well I am 53 now semi retired and have lived in Old Kilpatrick for the last 13 years, My kids are now grownups and live their own lives, but I can be seen most nights (rain or shine) walking my two Doberman’s (Hans and Kara) at the Bowling basin. I enjoy a chat with the Waterways staff and the many pleasant people I meet. Almost every person I see at the basin has a smile on their face it is a very special place indeed and when I die I want my ashes to be scattered there so I can rest in piece in a place of happiness and a place with a slower pace of life.

Bowling Harbour sits at the entrance to the Forth and Clyde Canal which is the oldest and longest canal in Scotland completed in 1790. It was an impressive feat of engineering at 38 miles long and provided a link between the River Clyde and the River Forth at Grangemouth. The main building in the photo is the Customs House built for the opening of the canal and for the collection of dues and custom charges for vessels entering and leaving the canal.
