Reviews of Braveheart Fencing and Archery

I visited Braveheart Fencing and Archery as a Birthday surprise and could not have enjoyed it more. Four hours of fencing and archery was fantastic. The instructor was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Would reccomend to anyone who wants a fun day out or to just try something new.

My son and I had brilliant time here. The staff, Laura and Bjarne, were friendly, professional and also made it lots of fun. Highly recommend them!

Fantastic day of archery & fencing with great staff! I booked 3 hours of archery & fencing for beginners with head coach Laura who I dealt with through email who was a delight. Bjarn took the lesson on the day, and he was so pleasant - with just the right mix of keeping us all safe and guiding us to improve, but allowing for a ton of fun! Both the archery and fencing were activities none of us had done before, and we all had a blast. The hall itself is quite hidden but easy to get to with Google Maps. As a bonus there was the most beautiful and friendly dog I've ever seen there, too, who was good for cuddles in between ;) Great value and a fantastic day out!

Bjarne's passion for archery was clear while he was instructing us. The session was very personalised and responsive to what we wanted to learn. We did a two hour session and it went by so fast! We have already booked a second session and are hoping to make this a regular visit.

Great archery range, up to 25m. Affordable hourly prices, with the option to rent out equipment. Also, there are fencing classes for those interested. Ran by welcoming people with a big fluffy dog. What more can you ask for?

I can't praise this place enough. Booked myself and my 10 year old son in for introduction sessions and had an awesome time.
Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Bjarne is a fantastic mentor and teacher for all levels of archery.
we will be back!

An eye-opening year at Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow
By Adam Gazalet, Glasgow 2016
I started training at Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow about a year ago (January 2016). In this very year, I’ve seen more progress in my fencing technique and understanding of fencing than in the past 4 years (9 years of fencing before coming to Glasgow).
This can be explained not only by the fact that Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow is open every day of the week, but also by the quality of the fencing coaching I received from Épéemaster Bjarne Höglund (Head Coach at Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow). The lessons while being very challenging, are tailored to the fencer to improve his strong points while minimising his weaknesses. As a 1.64m male (on the shorter end of the spectrum), this was very beneficial to me as more often than not, fencing coaches try and teach each of their fencers to fight like them. That doesn’t really work when there’s a big physical difference such as height in this case. This was definitely not the scenario we are looking at with Bjarne. Since I started training at Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow I’ve learnt of ways to deal with the disadvantages of being short and have changed the way I fence to cope with it.
If you happen to do anything wrong during the lesson (trust me, you will) Bjarne will not hesitate to point it out and provide you with a very precise explanation of what you didn’t quite get and how to fix it. This ease to pass on fencing knowledge is something I never truly got to experience from previous fencing coaches that I’ve had.
His ability to analyse a fencer was made very clear to me after I received some piste side coaching during one of my matches at my first Scottish fencing competition, advice which drastically changed the outcome of the fencing bout. This was actually what got me to start training at Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow. I’m sure that if I had received the same quality of fencing coaching for the past 9 years I would be on a much higher level than what I am today.
Another thing that was new to me when joining Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow was the concept of group blade work, where two fencing students are given an exercise and must perform it, one of them taking on the role of the fencing coach and the other of the fencing student. Not only is this very effective way to manage time when running a very crowded fencing class, but it also allows the pupil who is “coaching” to understand the importance of his presentation of target and how to set up the conditions to trigger the reaction he wants.
As I’ve said previously it’s only been a year and I’ve seen a huge spike in my fencing performance. A clear indicator of that are my recent fencing results. My fencing ranking in the UK has gone from 336th to 54th only within a year. In addition to that I’ve managed to reach third place (Bronze Medal) in the Scottish Open Fencing Tournament whereas a year before I did not pass the top 16 and last but not least, I was able to win the Merseyside Open Fencing Tournament when I only managed the top 8 the previous year. I’m very eager to see what I will achieve in the remaining three years I have at Braveheart Fencing and Archery in Maryhill, Glasgow.
The archery is also good fun!

A visit by 4 adults and 4 children, excellent and professional instruction in a friendly manner, everyone loved it and the dog too. Toilet was clean but the hand washing arrangements were pretty poor with a very dirty hand towel which I think no one touched. With this issue dealt with it would certainly warrant a 5 star rating.
Just read your response to my comments and pleased to hear what you plans are. Good luck in the future and no doubt we will be back at some point. Alan

Bjorn is a fantastic coach and thanks to him three beginners have now left with a great understanding of archery after having a load of fun! Highly recommend for anyone looking to learn something a bit different that's out-with your comfort zone. 🏹

We booked as a group of 6 and had THE best time! Bjarne is a brilliant instructor whom was very engaging and explained things very well!
The two hours we booked was well worth the price and we would highly recommend that anyone who wants to give archery a try to come here as Bjarne made the whole experience fun in a very relaxed environment.
Also, the dog there was the cutest, fluffiest amd friendliest thing we have seen! Worth paying the money if only to see this dog!

Absolute great fun. Bjarne was great, very professional, thorough safety briefing and plenty time provided to shoot. Good value for money.
Will definitely be returning to shoot some more arrows!

My girlfriend booked the two of us for the induction session for my birthday, and it was utterly amazing 👌we were taught all the proper safety and techniques before and during our time shooting, bjarne really helped to make this the best experience possible as he helped to improve our shooting and even gave us some of the history of archery and about some info about Olympic archery! I would really recommend it. 🎯😊

Fantastic wee spot. Only managed to go a few times after lockdown, but whenever I'm back from uni it's going to be my regular range.
Bjarne and Laura are fantastic, and the dog is always happy to see you :D

The instructor is ideal
Great value for money
Interesting yet enjoyable - good fun
Definitely returnable
Don't be fooled at first glance, it may not be Olympic facilities but everything else with it punches above its weight 👍

Tried out archery at the Wallace Monument in Stirling when the team from Braveheart Fencing and Archery were there. After a few minutes of shooting under Bjarne’s instruction, my boyfriend and I decided to go into Glasgow for the full two hour introductory lesson. It was awesome! We not only got a lot of time to shoot, but we learned about different shooting techniques and some of the history of archery. Bjarne is an excellent instructor. I’d highly recommend this if you’re interested in giving archery a go.
