Reviews of Britannia Leisure Centre
O. L.
Brand new 4-storey building with a big cafe facing the park. Everything is nice and clean. One sad thing is that the car park is gone, so it's not as convenient as it used to be for people who live outside central London.
P. L.
Booked a family fun session in there and it was awesome! Such a good fun for kids and adults. I loved every second. It's a shame though that we are not allowed to take pictures (not even from our own kid alone). Would be great to have registration of these moments :(
D. J.
Amazing swimming area staff. Dean and Jess are real gems. Great for children and top notch facilities throughout. I come here every single Saturday for swimming with my son. Love it.
T. O.
Outstanding! Never been to such a gym before. Actually not only a gym but a communal space where I felt very welcomed and comfortable. The staff is lovely, the gym itself is sparkling clean, facilities are stunning. The range of machines in the gym is great, all super modern (think Netflix and working out).
Overall 100% recommended, well worth the price.
V. v. B.
1- if you want first day refund is so hard they say £40 is so small money for refund but after we found other phone line and they help to get money.
2-why reason to leave its about swimming pool is just 4 hairdryer for all people.
Only one bench for 5 people in one room.
So many tap with sink which one nobody used.
3- no parking but outside so many place where you can do parking( why you not build?)
4 Gym about boxing bags why you instal together so close is hard training two persons ( there is possible fit other side bag)
5 so long is not work steam and sauna room.
When I first time coming it's look nice place but after 1 week I found so many discomfort.
I hope you will fix this problem and I will back you.
R. H.
Staff were great, facilities spacious and very clean, in fact were being cleaned throughout our visit on rotation. Didn't get to try the cafe due to our schedule but it looked good.
Family pool is fab, huge enclosed water slide was a lot of fun and well supervised. Shallow pool and slide for toddlers and babies. A deeper pool is available for older kids in the same room.
Lane swimming is in a separate pool housed in a completely different room.
They have soft play, rooftop courts and pitches too. Earlier reviews mention showers and a bad smell but when we used the facilities (2.30pm on a Tuesday during school holidays so pretty busy), showers were working, hot and good pressure. We didn't notice any smells other than the chlorine.
Not sure what general expectations are at a public swimming pool (which this is) but I've always found that crowds are unavoidable unless you're using the pool at a private member's gym. If you want a tour with staff it might be best to book in advance, not once did I see staff unoccupied so might be difficult to find someone available ad-hoc.
K. R.
Amazing facility, the play pool is so much fun and has activity for all ages. We loved it and will definitely be back.
M. F. (.
A wonderful, brand new venue, with a huge gym, swimming pools and other facilities. Very reasonably priced, and includes classes.
The venue and changing rooms are kept very clean and staff are helpful.
You have to book your gym and pool sessions, but once you get used to it, it's pretty easy.
I gave it 3 stars because thing keep breaking (first the ventilation in changing rooms and now the hot water, blocked shower drains, door to roof stuck open, etc) and communication is poor.
C. M.
They are ridiculously strict about entrance, won't even let you in 5 mins before your booked a slot to change. The staff is not very friendly and very matter of fact about anything they tell you, which is not a very friendly gym experience. The facilities are nice, but the staff leave a lot to be desired.
M. H.
Good, new leisure centre. As you’d expect facilities are up scratch.
I tend to only use the gym which is almost always busy which can lead to wait times for certain apparatus.
It doesn’t help that there’s an odd equipment imbalance; not enough cable machines, but plenty of leg machines which are barely used. There’s also a bunch of machines near the entrance to the gym which don’t get used impeding on the warm up/down area which is too small.
They’ve also missed a trick with the mirror placement around the free weight section, as it isn’t full length meaning you’re unable to check form unless you’re standing up e.g. if you’re squatting you won’t be able to see your stance.
From my perspective the busyness can be off putting and I think if the opening times were earlier it might make a difference to the peak times.
But overall the gym is fairly good value for money if you use other facilities alongside it. It’s light and airy which views of Shoreditch park below which is nice and it’s well lit when you leave the building if you do so in the evening.
S.
Wow what an excellent Centre. Enjoyed the tour of the Centre and the member of staff was very helpful. I had a good workout in the gym and will be attending a yoga class next week. The General Manager was very helpful and I can't wait to return again.
R.
This review also contains a few tips for newcomers.
Firstly, remember to take a £1 for the lockers. Overall, great facilities. Staff were friendly and helpful when it was my first visit where I was clueless about how entry/membership worked. I didn't want to take a star off for this next point as it wasn't a deal breaker but the showers are cold! Please try and fix this, as the rest of the amenities in the changing rooms are great and it's such a shame that this one aspect makes getting ready afterwards makes the experience worse.
This isn't to do with the centre itself but I just wanted to warn people signing up: If you have not signed up yet, my advice is: get the "Better" app first before getting a membership. It's very hard to link your membership to your "Better" app account, so you'd be wise to get an account and then purchase the membership through the app. The UX for app needs a bit of work, I had to sit there for a while trying to figure some of it out as there is the main app UI and then there is a separate design for certain parts of the online infrastructure. Overall I'd have a clear "how to" on linking memberships and accounts.

Great modern fascilities, amazing cafe and food on offer, the cleaning team deserve a special note of appreciation because they work tirelessly and actually do clean the premises (pool changing area, toilets, showers, windows, revolving doors are constantly being cleaned!). So much space for your things, lockers in every corner, nice changing rooms and fantastic gym area with everything you may need.
The not so good:
1. Staff: total hit and miss. Some staff are helpful and informed, others are totally clueless and have no interest or pride in the job they do.
2. Classes often start late and end late. Thur Group Cycle is often 15 mins late, which means I cannot complete it and have to leave early.
3. Staff have to shout in classes - not sure why Better can't invest in portable microphones so that people can actually do their job and not have to shout over loud music (group cycle, dance fitness, aqua aerobics).
4. Cold showers: seem to be fixed for now, but you must check the water temperature before undressing.
5. Letting people in exactly 5 mins before the class - for most activities, this is enough time but not for all, e.g. if you need to fully change you need to be there more than 5 mins before the class but cannot enter.
P.
I'm yet to try other facilities, but the gym is super well-equipped, clean and staff are incredibly nice. I had some issues with my membership not working, but the guys at the desk sorted it out really quickly. Great value for money too!
J. R.
Amazing development, noble idea. Five stars there. The mixed changing area, however, earns the award of 1.5 stars. The mixed-use design is a terrible idea; uncomfortable. The physical design itself is a shambles: small, with a single narrow entrance hall, shoes regularly left on past the ‘shoes off’ sign, etc. Somewhat unsanitary (the toilets are located on the other side of said ‘shoes off’ sign) and a plain horrible experience between 5 and 7pm (ugh, too many kids and families!!! Not to mention cleaners ramming wet mops into your feet). It seems Hackney Council overpaid on the architecture and design front (public sector, quel surprise). Also, the fitness pool is a bit chaotic - the staff are too timid to enforce simple rules of etiquette (e.g. choose correct lane relative to swim speed, etc). I do also wish it were 50m in length, but it is conveniently located and you can’t have everything I suppose… Oh, and the gym is just fabulous.
L. W.
Love this new space! Love the emphasis on active travel and public transport, lots of bike racks here and open spaces for pedestrians and people. Love that they took away the car park, we don’t need more cars in central London, the roads are horrific as they are (smog, pollution, accidents and not enough space for pedestrians).
V. S.
Lovely gym with a wide selection of classes and activities. Sauna hardly ever in use ☹
v. o.
Very modern outside, love the outdoor seating and plants. Nice reception and cafe looks onto Shoreditch Park and the indoor pool.
a. H.
I've recently used the main hall. It didn't seem to have any ventilation. I'm hoping it will be resolved. they changing rooms are a massive improvement. for sports, there are mens and womens changing rooms and a large number of individuals changing rooms with their own toilet and showers.
S. S.
We took our kids to the family swim session. There is timed entry, you get 10 mins to change and only 50 mins in the pool which was not long enough. The splash pad was great fun for a 3 year old and my 7+8 year old kids loved the slide. The pool area however is really small, it's hard not to bump into other people. There were some 10 year old boys there trying to chase each other around playing but they kept being told off my the lifeguard as there's only enough room for everyone to bob on the spot, I felt sorry for them as there's just not the space to play in the water never mind attempt to swim. The newly designed building is huge and spacious, it seems bizarre that they decided a pool the size of half a tennis court was suitable.
M. L.
Great leisure centre, with many activities. The gym is quite well equipped. Is going to close soon as they are building a new one next door, so don‘t take it as an option for swimming till the new one is open in july 2021. customer service via email(is not even from the specific centre but from Better)is quite poor however the personal in the place are super helpful.
r. t.
Absolutely amazing!! Great facilities, clean showers, amazing classes , all under one roof!! staff very helpful and nice cafe , Great for the local community . What more can you ask ! love it!!!
H. S.
Nice new opened gym, clean and nice facilities. Although very busy ( lots of kids and teens) and I wasn't happy with mix village changing rooms... bad idea if you don't want to walk around with your swimming costume around some strange guys... not much space for fixing yourself after swim ( no mirrors etc) .
J. B.
Sadly the TENNIS COURTS are almost unusable. The surface is uneven and is getting worse by the week, the ball barely bounces. It's ok for very casual muck about tennis and the view at the roof is pretty cool. Needs immediate repair and resurfacing though.
m. v.
Swimming pool, sauna, hammam, tennis court, it’s really cheap for London.
Staff are friendly, I really recommend this place for subscription it’s worth it
F. S.
Amazing facilities, I just hope they are well maintained. There could be more classes at times outside of working hours, but overall very good for the price
D. W.
Lovely building nice neutral tones and decor, good facilities, lovely staff unrushed helpful and friendly service.
Would recommend, have recommended already and will be going again.
Great job 👏
M. S.
New and clean, only problem is how far in advance you need to book - but I guess thats popularity...
E. B.
I’ve been using Britannia for 6/7 years or so now as it’s my local Council gym.
It’s got great sports options, badminton, squash, swimming, gym and exercise classes. The centre serves the area well.
I use the gym, it’s clean, and it’s kept clean throughout the day, as the staff are always around cleaning the machines and restocking the anti bacterial cleaning spray and tissues.
The dressing areas and toilets are always kept clean during the day and evening when I’ve attended there’s always an operative around.
It’s not ‘clickie’ like some gyms. In fact being a regular you get to see other regular gym users and we’ve got a gym friendship! The staff are extremely friendly and always there for advice.
M. B.
I love Britannia, I've been going here since I was young and never had a problem, they're currently upgrading and there are loads of building works so NO PARKING!! My 3 year old daughter does gymnastics here and she is buzzing over her class every week. The pool is amazing for babies and young children, with a fade in pool, your youngster has full control over their water play. There's a wave machine that everyone goes mad for and it really is a cute simulation of the beach.
M. S.
A great building, and interior. Top facilities too. Used the gym and had a private studio for table tennis. 10/10
V. F.
Very nice please ,For a family
F. T.
Fab place to hold a swim party!
J. T.
Do the staff really think that “all i want for xmas “ gets you lifting ?
B. A.
Great place, new building soon
U. I.
Great service! Especially from the young lady who works at the reception I think her name was priya? Will be coming back for sure.
L. D.
Britannia is currently undergoing some renovations so there is no car park atm which is a bit of a problem as everywhere is permit only apart from a small road onto a housing estate which is always jam packed so finding sonnet somewhere to leave yourcar if you drive may be difficult. Inside the leisure centre is also having work done but progress seems to be slow atm and some of these areas look just left to gather dust. Hopefully they will be sorted soon. The pool and changing room areas are ok in terms of cleanliness but I felt there could be staff cleaning more regularly as there was lots of water sitting in the locker/changing areas that could have been easily mopped away to avoid slipping and bacteria spreading. Also the blue shoe protectors were empty and no staff seemed to be checking them out the area to make sure it was maintained. The pool itself was great, clean and as expected. Everyone seemed to be having fun and enjoying themselves.
D. H.
The real problem with this place is it's location. Unless you live nearby the public transport options are very limited. I always seem to have to catch at least two buses. Usually I walk along the canal as it's quicker. Parking is possible but it's pay and display. Vending machines work but cost about £1.50 for any drink. Toilets are clean. The gymn equipment is okay. The staff at reception always seem to be busy.
D. C.
Staff incredibly rude and unhelpful, I was literally talked to like dirt because their stupid scanning machine is faulty.
Filthy gym, often very smelly, air con not very powerful, loud Radio 1 music, sometimes I can't even hear my own music. Can't believe I pay £30 a month for this torture!!
Very good selection of equipment and considerate gym goers.
F. T.
Amazing facilities with a great view over the park.
R.
Loved that leisure centre today. Much better than Kings Halls. Looking new facilities, nice staff... My little girl loved the pool with the waves and the tube slide. Just not happy with the locker taking my 20p and not locking... Will repeat for sure
N. T.
It's a nice place, it's cheap and close to my home, but the actual gym isn't extremely large and i would like to have more machines and dumbbells, also i've never seen trainers inside the gym, there should be one trainer always inside of the gym to check if people are using the machines the correct way etc and not with an extra cost.
And something that's mostly aesthetic is the old trees around the centre, why did they cut them down to their roots?
They can't regenerate and London needs trees.
Beside these things the stuff is friendly and the areas could be worst.
C. G.
Greatest idea and development, specially for families its affordable and have good facilities.
M. L.
The reception staff and work ethics are abysmal and rude, they are rarely seen doing anything. Not even their own staff can get through on the phone. I literally stood infront of the desk ringing their phone for a good 15mins observing her doing nothing yet ignoring the flipping phone. I had to travel down with kids in tow to get the information that I can't access the center a drag upset kids home again. She wasn't even sorry, she just shrugged mockingly. Livid is not the word.
However the gym and teaching and swiiming staff are amazing and the insides are refurbished enough.
c. d. s.
It's a very nice place to go,top atmosphere
S. D.
This place is amazing and the best leisure centre I have ever went to. The staff are so professional and effective. The place is always clean and if it's not the staff are quickly onto it. I would definitely recommend going here then anywhere else!
T. O. (.
The pool could be cleaner. Not long enough, deep enough and no lane swimming. Catered more towards children rather than adults. There's only one water work out class a week at 9.30am when most people are at work. Britannia is on my doorstep but I have to go to the Clissold Center for a variety of classes.
A.
Great little local gym, generally not too busy, easy to park and people who come here are really friendly - no big egos. Decent selection of free weights, a squat rack, Smith machine, 4 benches, random area where you can do monkey bars / punchbag / etc, two types of leg press machines, a pull down etc. Oh, and loads of cardio machines, if that’s your thing (but if it is, try lifting weights, it’s much more fun...)
A. M.
Squash facilities are good. Changing rooms etc fine. My main issue and reason for 'OK' rating is that booking is all online and the front of house staff limited in helpfulness sorting out bookings. This is another example of global customer service decline as functions are being outsourced/stuck online to detriment of customer experience
M. D.
This local leisure facility is not bad at all. With a range of classes, including some martial arts taught by external instructors, and a small pool, it's a great neighbourhood asset.
Sadly, the Council is planning to sell off the car park that makes it possible for some of the disabled visitors - including me - to visit and use the space, and the on-street parking is inadequate without it. In addition, the only wheelchair accessible access is down the steep car-park entrance and exit ramps. Which is fine if you have a power chair but pretty tough if you're self propelled or reliant on a carer to push.
Such a shame.
H. E.
My kids have had swimming lessons here a few years and I’ve found the teachers to be friendly and helpful - some are more that others obviously but we’ve always had a positive experience at the centre- special mention goes out to Dean who’s a great teacher and the kids love him!
K.
Good location and equipment.
However I didn't like the changing rooms. They could be more separated.
Other then that goid size swimming pool.
There's even slide so kids cam have fun.
Staff friendly.
G. S.
Great local gym with fantastic facilities. Everything you would expect from a large community gym. Very reasonable membership price and can also utilise facilities as a non member. Highly recommended
W. A.
I went back to the Gym for the first time since the pandemic But I didn't feel comfortable in the Gym Like Before I still Feel a bit scared. But am in a Lot of pain so i Have to try and see what I can do to Ease the pain.
D. W. (.
Britannia is a key part of growing up in hackney with one of the best pools in North/East London. The centre is very family friendly and even hosts birthday party’s by the pool. Whilst the outside of the centre now looks outdated the inside has had a lot of modernisation over the years, especially the new state of the art gym. There is a wide array of fitness classes on offer, which are great for people of all abilities. If your visiting Hackney or a local who has yet to visit, a trip to Britannia is a must!
T. W.
What a difference a year makes. I took a year away from this place and I'm highly impressed. After an apparent much needed injection of funding, the Hackney Leisure Centre has expanded in side and upgraded is equipment, making it a serious contender in the affordable gym market. Furthermore, the centre is set to expand further in coming years. Watch this space.
S. S.
Checked website for swimming pool times. Arrived to swim only to find that we had 40 mins. Website pool times for the kids summer holidays not updated. The pool was absolutely freezing and the water was murky with a lot of debris floating around, clearly had been sometime since the water had been filtered. Came out of the pool feeling filthy.
C. W.
Good, well fitted gym. Though the men's showers are gross. The shower heads are faulty and there's a lack of appliances in there such as hair dryer. The floor was filthy and the room smelled.
h. k.
Great value for the price paid. I attend fitness classes which is an amazing deal as i get to attend activities from circuits, step, yoga and so much more.. trainers are experienced and atmosphere is so friendly... All in all its fantastic..
D. S.
Some of the equipment has been upgraded, which is a welcome improvement. The gym is often a pigsty though; mostly because of disgusting patrons who throw litter on the floor and don't replace their weights, but staff seem indifferent and never put things back either. The so-called 'Health Suite' is reminiscent of the Upside Down from Stranger Things. They can tear the whole building down but the Health Suite will always return.
D. B.
The guy at the front desk us the best 👍
A. M.
Mainly use it for badminton and squash. The floor in a bit slippery on the badminton courts and the lights can get in your eyes when playing high overhead clears. During the summer it get very hot and generally management do not open the doors and there is no air con!
The squash courts were refurbished in 2015 and are clean they are traditional courts with a see through door, they are not fully glass backed.
The lights on the courts operate on a token system so when your time is up the light automatically go out.
I. G.
My little one loves it. It is nice and warm. There is a wave machine but it is not always on, there is also a slide though also this is not always open. But still gets 5 stars from my little one which is the only opinion that really counts.
C. C.
Been playing ball her for almost 10 years.
It's not the nicest gym in town but it has cozy feel.
And the pool is pretty nice, great slide for the kids.
D. W.
Good for the gym and classes when the systems or not down if u need to book. there customer service is so bad so dont look for a smile sauna and steam rooms or not all that and gets very busy be prepared
F. T.
Fab place to hold a swim party!
R. W.
Located innocuously off a roundabout, behind Hoxton Market and beside Shoreditch Park, this is one of the venues I regularly use my GLL/GYM London membership card in. There are a wealth of activities available, including swimming, sauna, five-a-side football, gym.
Perhaps one criticism I can make is that the gym (the main reason I usually visit) sometimes the equipment (weights/bars) can go missing. Changing areas are limited and classes get busy quickly.
Staff are nice and the place is always clean. Its cheap but worth it
Z. S.
The atmosphere was amazing, the kids loved it, the wave's were fun the Custormer service was great the team were really nice And the life guards were always very watchful and observant. Will recommend to others and become s full time member as I am a hackney resident...
E. R.
Britannia Leisure Centre is a lovely place, my three years old loves coming here for his swimming lesson. The staff is welcoming, the teachers are competent and the building has a lot of character.
N. Y. Ö.
Well equipped center with great staff !
J. O.
It's ok here and it is up for regeneration. The gym seems to be stocked ok, but can get very crowded and they also hold spin classes in there so can get very, very loud. This place wouldn't be my first choice to go.
o. L.
I go swimming here with my friends and went with my school in year4,5,6 it was really good but there was some instructor called charmane or something and she was so rude to the pupils and shouted at them if they couldn't swim!
S. R.
Always loved going there for swimming, but waiting time for the showers are too long. Also they're isn't any private cubicle showers available... Can't have a PROPER shower if there are kids about!
D. E.
Yeah, this place is good but the receptionist wastes your time sometimes. And also the swimming changing rooms are a bit dirty. However, there is a wide range of things to do. Like Kendo or Badminton.
A. B.
Currently under construction so some things have been moved around however it is still fully functioning and the staff are helpful. I have seen cleaner leisure centres so that’s why I have only given 4 stars.
A. S.
Very friendly attentive staff. Small but functional gym. Clean, and not too busy.
Much better than the rude and incompetent staff at Clissold Leisure centre.
D. T. D.
Went with my son of 9 to the basketball session. Nice place, clean, lots of activities, large parking space, bike racks outside. Green space around.
J. U.
Big and well equipped gym, however the changing room/showers are disgusting, run down, dim lit and dirty. For the price you pay, you expect better.
E. A.
Leisure Centre with two full sized sports halls (for basketball, indoor football, badminton, volleyball and a climbing wall) and a nice-looking swimming pool complete w/ slide; there may well be other stuff, but that's all I saw during this particular visit.
a. “. s. t. r. m.
The pool gradually gets deeper, which is brilliant for small children. The staff really let's this place down. Huge car park out front.
V. F.
Very nice please ,For a family
C. L.
great community sports and leisure venue, well run, and despite the building showing signs of its age, it is an excellent service for the local area, the Squash club on Thursday nights is great
P. E. Y.
Britannia is great for kids. Their dressing rooms are awkward and uncomfortable, and its stifling hot, but the kids love the pool and it is a super fun activity to do with them.
J. M.
It's alright. Sports hall is kinda small. Changing rooms too. Motorcycling parking is not free although it is free everywhere else in the borough so I found that very annoying!
A. O.
Nice children’s pool with a wave machine. Has separate small training pool for lessons and great swimming teachers.
L. S.
Newly opened centre. Quite good facilities.
K. O.
Brilliant new building, generally friendly atmosphere.
B. A.
Great place, new building soon
S. I.
Looks brilliant, let's hope the facilities are as great
R. D.
The pool is ok, the slide is fine. Problem is a bit dated, and slide only opens a few minutes every hour. Cheap for sure
F.
The best swimming facility I've seen in whole of Hackney. I've passed by the gym and yoga room as well and looks equipped as well as exciting
M. G.
One of the cleanest pool in London
J. W.
Very friendly attentive staff. Small but functional gym. Clean, and not too busy.
J. S.
The place has wonderful user friendly staff and facilities. The water is always very cold and needs to be a bit warmer.
J. B.
Good facilities for local people to use and keep fit etc swimming pool with waves and tube to go down.
T. C.
Swimming changing area needs to be updated, water pressure in main showers inadequate. But the place might be pulled down soon. A great shame!
M. A. R.
This is great place for physical fitness.
Good location near shoreditch park.
Perfect for swimming.
L. S. E.
Great facilities changing rooms clean and pool is ideal for kids and adults alike.
A. B.
A fairly basic gym, has an abundance of cardio machines but could perhaps use a few duplicate weights and strength machines
L. C.
Great gym/ Staff are friendly/ Clean and tidy facilities
k. r.
Loved it there really good if you want to have some fun in the swimming pool or if you want to learn to swim
C. B.
Haven't been here in years and gymnastics class is brilliant for the little ones
J.
Went for pool as it has waves and slide. Both not working and no discount. Pool itself nice.
J. J.
I use the free weight gym here. Could do with more equipment but it’s cheap and a good compromise
H. F.
