Reviews of Atariya Foods Swiss Cottage
H. L.
Great food!
Different sushi than before, probably because the chef changed, I can’t see the old ones anymore but very good quality still.
They are always friendly and helpful, the manager especially is doing an excellent job trying to keep everything under control, they must have less staff.
She is even doing sushi!
A. A. G.
Vegetable set box was good priced at £12
Seaweed salad £2.90

I was so close, so close! To giving this place 5 stars and I'll explain why I deducted one star.
Would recommend booking a head as this place is rather small and can get packed out during busy hours, so if you want to avoid waiting 30+ minutes then call and reserve a spot!
We ordered the Tori Karaage, Una-Ju, Aburi Wagyu Nigiri (x2), Sal Ikura Don, Tokujo Chirashi, Salmon Spicy Mayo, coke (x2) and Yuzu Ramune. Total £107.50. Soooo yeah, this by no means is a cheap place to eat. But damn, the food is amazing. Honestly. I would go as far as to say to save up and treat yourself here if you possibly can as the food is very good.
With that being said. I was a little disappointing by the chef making the sushi and food as at one point during survive, they whipped out their mobile phone and was on it for a few minutes before continuing their service.
They did wash their hands after but that kind of ruined the atmosphere for me slightly. There was also a long wait before we got the cheque before we could pay to leave. I know this seems picky but it was almost the most perfect service with food apart from that.
I have been here before and will come again in the future no doubt... After I save up a little money ;)
N. F.
Love the food here. If you bring back the black cod roll, I'll give it five stars ;)
W. L.
The waitress give a take out menu for eat in customers. The prices are different and they let the customers pay for their mistakes. 😒
A. S.
Reasonably priced good sushi restaurant. It's not worth a trip but if you're nearby, it's one of the best Japanese restaurants in the area.
C. T.
Reasonable prices for the excellent quality food!
C. B.
All dishes we had were really great. Need to improve the service a bit.
A. W.
Great place for authentic Japanese food. Their lunch set is value for money. I usually go to their Ealing common branch. This branch have the same high quality.
J. N.
Can't believe I haven't been here before, so excited to come across this local gem. We just ordered the most delicious, melt in your mouth salmon set, spicy tuna rolls and succulent gyoza to take away. All made fresh to order, with speedy service. Thank you, looking forward to coming back
C. T.
Reasonable prices for the excellent quality food!
a. c.
It was so good we enjoyed it. We now like the decresone.
k. w.
Good place for sushi as they have more variety than the high street chains.. But lacks the quality associated with better sushi restaurants . Although if you are craving for sushi then this will be good enough.
F. G.
Excellent fresh sushi, 'super fatty tuna' was like butter, quick service.
J. G.
This restaurant is unquestionably one of the tastiest place in the area. Every time I come to this place I am truly pleased. They keep their high level service and the topmost level of food they give. You will be always satisfied with this restaurant. Highly recommended.
M. L.
Friendly staff and service. Good food!
F. V.
I visit this place a lot since I work in the area. I love how their service is always awesome and they keep the place neat at all times. Prices are affordable and they serve sizeable portions.
M. C.
Amazing place and superb food!! Staff was so nice and polite, I highly recommend! Thank you for making our late Valentine’s dinner special! ❤️
F. D.
I like to go with friends to this place with my warmest recommendations. I go to this restaurant often. I get very good feedback from my friends. The the cooking is appetizing and the crew is attentive and cooperative. always when we go to this place we have a pleasant time. I recommend this place with pleasure.
B. J.
I arrive at this special place every couple of days since I enjoy the special air that is characterizes this restaurant. The personel is extremely friendly and skilfull. The service is impressively quick. Most important, the food they serve is great. I have been there often and I was always satisfied. The rate is reasobable. I recommend this place to to all.
B. L.
Excellent spot to buy some food when in a hurry. The customer service is prompt, rates are reasonable, awesome atmosphere. Keep up the good work
A. H.
Some of the best sushi in the area. Great selection of food both hot and cold, had a fantastic family dinner here. Really friendly staff.
K.
Great quality food, very fresh ingredients. Staff are great and service is wonderful. Our food arrived very fast. We enjoyed every mouthful. Highly recomend
C. C.
This place used to be very good.. now they've changed the menu, it has become quite expensive and the quality is also a bit worse
L. C.
Great food, good ambiance, reasonable prices.... take a friend who knows whats best to order!
A. O.
Great Sushi. Always very busy, which means service suffers a little but it's always good quality when it comes out. Highly recommended
S. N.
To me as a Japanese, Sushi in this restaurant was so great. I believe that this restaurant is run by Japanese. Fatty tuna was pretty amazing. I’ll definitely visit this again.
A. M.
Nice staff, nice food, decent portion. If you are in the area it's worth a visit.
m. L.
A authentic Japanese restaurant away from the busy streets
R. B.
Its a great place and you can eat really a lot of tasty stuff for reasonable price! The only shame is that its a bit small so it gets packed way to fast.. but if you reserve - you can spend a really fine evening:-)
C. T.
Great place. Chef was really nice and gifted us an extra piece of uni. A wonderful experience
C. C.
I celebrated my birthday today in this excellent restaurant. I am glad to say that it was a great evening and the venue was definitely one of the reasons for the fruitful celebration. The stuff contributed in a graceful manner, the cooking was tasty and my buddies were extremely pleased. We shall absolutely return for more events. thanks very much.
T. S.
Really really really good sushi, much better than any chain restaurant and for the price I'm convinced it the best there is available
S. S.
I came here because of the positive reviews, but I find myself sympathetic with the more recent comments on how management change has altered the taste and price. Marginally better than average sushi but overpriced. I won't be returning.
N. S.
Great food, service used to be a little slow but it has improved, so changing from 4 stars to 5 stars.
A. A.
The service is nice and polite. The sushi is good. But make sure you book and order enough.
T. R.
Good selection of sushi and drinks as well as helpful and attentive staff. The decor is very cool and the chefs prepare the food in full view which is excellent to watch.
T.
Overpriced for the service and quality of food that they offer. For this price range I would expect the chefs having finer skills, focus and attention to details when they prepare the raw fish at the counter. The staffs was not trying to be rude, but they were not very welcoming to our little toddler and pushed him a bit when they tried to squeeze through.
L. R.
Visited and revisited. Service was friendly and fast, food was delicious. But I recommend making a reservation before visiting because they are quite busy and might not always have a free table.
W. L.
Food was great as usual, just as fresh and delicious as its James Street shop. The service was quite slow and the staff were constantly chatting with each other.
M. C.
Love this place. The food is excellent. The staff are friendly. Never had a problem so far.
D. T.
Great food.... But... Service can be quite average.... Very slow sometimes.... Also they have 3/5 cleanliness with the food standards agency that they don't display in their window.
But the sushi is excellent and we try to go every week. So I do recommend this little gem.
Also people complaining on Google about a 1.5 hour limit need to be a little more considerate to the small restaurant. Eat more talk less. Don't be an arse.
N. P.
i have enjoyed the sushi but the service was a bit slow. However the place was clean and the staff friendly. i will come back
l. a.
Great staff, great sushi! Love this place. I was also very pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to order for my kid’a BD party, they were super helpful about it. Wish they delivered also.
L. M.
It used to be my favourite restaurant in the area but a change of menu combined with a big price hike had left me very disappointed. I've gone back recently and had a similar experience to what it was before the change. Prices have gone up a fair bit but the improvements to the menu means I will definitely go back again.
T. S.
Delicious sushi, fantastic quick service, great choice of sake in a modern pleasant atmosphere. Great
L. S.
We were taken here luckily on our last evening in London. Local sushi shop but fabulous ambience and brilliant sushi. About 10 plus stars
M. S.
From italy whit love ❤❤❤
I. W.
The service is consistently efficient, lovely atmosphere, super friendly employees. Will visit here again when I get here.
E. W.
Incredible sushi! The hours aren't always convenient, and there's usually a wait. But definitely worth it. Good value, too.
M. C.
Found it in the end, having first tried the place up the road which was closed! Truly great sashimi, but you'll find yourself either fashionably hungry or seriously empty-walleted when you leave.
J. S.
Unusually great quality sushi and other Japanese dishes - although the restaurant is usually very busy
M. B. I. a.
Excellent restaurant. Love the sushi... 😁🍣🍥🍢 Busy place.
M. S.
Lovely food, cosy atmosphere and decent prices. Definitely going again - best miso soup I've ever had!
F. K. (. M.
Always good value.
Fantastic staff.
Food is fresh and delicious every time 😋
Nice prices too g BONUS‼️
M. H.
An excellent Japanese restaurant with an affordable lunch time set menu (£9 - £14) and without the lunch time rush. The very friendly staff are a bonus!
I. A.
Delicious food and excellent service but the room is packed a little too tight for movement. Go but don't take kids or other fidgety people :-)
M. K.
Back to the old days. Great sushi at a reasonable price
N. S.
Great food, lovely personnel and fast service !
y.
Excellent authentic Japanese food in a local casual atmosphere.
A. C.
Amazing sushi, teriyaki everything! The fish quality is out of this world and the service great.
T. Y.
Best sushi and chicken teriyaki in the local area, not let down by it being further out of central London
M. (.
Just came back from Atari-ya!
Great food quality, quick service, such that even on peak dinner-time between 6-7 PM when I asked for the bill, I have waited for about 1 minute. Perfect.
The price is quite fair. I have only looked at food menu, not the drinks, but still, prices are very affordable.
Overall, very satisfied. Definitely will return and recommend. :)
K. B.
I would give the food 4 stars but the service 2-3. Not so much about the taking of orders and bringing of food but due to the way we were treated as the restaurant was closing. When we made a booking for 9:30pm we weren’t told that we would need to leave by 10:15pm. The waiter happily took our order, brought us our food and as we were still finishing our meal having not even reached coffee or dessert a bill was placed on our table. We ignored it. After all we were still eating. 3 minutes later the manager came over insisting we pay. We did. We still had our wine to finish and weren’t asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. There were other clients still around us. Chairs started to be put on tables around us. This was 10:15 please note having been given less that 45 minutes to eat and not being told that was the case. As my friend and I were still finishing our wine, we were told the restaurant was closing and asked to leave. We pointed out that we still had to finish our wine and this was not the way to treat paying customers. The reply was a shrug of the shoulders by the manager and that the restaurant must close at 10:30pm. To cut a long story short we were made to leave having not even been allowed to finish. I would advise people to choose other sushi restaurants. There is plenty of choice around and a restaurant displaying this behaviour should not be allowed to operate.
J. V.
Best value sushi in London! Amazing sushi at a very reasonable price, with friendly staff. Highly recommended
P. M.
Ok, not great sushi. Luckily they were quick
L. R.
Edible, nothing special
S. P.
Proper Japanese restaurant. A bit pricey compared to other Japanese restaurants but is very high quality and the staff is friendly and attentive.
Sashimi was very fresh and the tempura simply amazing.
The plates were replaced with each new course and when I dropped my chopsticks one of the staff got me a new one before I ask for it.
My sole complain is that they don't have Prawn Tempura sushi roll in the menu.
Just wish it was closer to where I live
A. N.
My favourite Japanese around. Good food & service.
S.
Food is amazing, must try the spider rolls. Very cozy atmosphere as well.
S. A.
VERY GOOD sushi! Melt in your mouth and fresh fresh fresh! Nice staff and a lovely date night for my husband and me. We will be back!
S. H.
Great sushi and Japanese dishes to take out or eat in. Everything was extremely fresh and the service delightful.
C. M.
Real authentic sushi. Great chefs, always the freshest fish and very friendly professional staff.
L. G.
I admire this venue very much. theres a friendly air. The kitcen is tasty. the service is effective and the stuff is professional. The pay is honest. very much recommend.
P. N. S.
Very good (and generous) sashimi, nigiris were also very good. Fast service, everything very fresh and nicely presented. Will certainly be back in the future (butnext time gonna book in advance).
J. G.
Maybe one of the best sushi place of London and for a very reasonable price
C. v.
been there many times, food is so good, and traditional, one of my favourite Japanese place in London.
vegetarian food and vegan food indicated on the menu.
C. I.
We went for lunch. Nice staff, and nice food.
N. S.
Great food always, though service is very slow lately
A. Z.
Excellent dishes at reasonable prices, good service.
C. L.
Another good sushi bar. Nothing fancy but hey...
S. L.
Amazing sushi. Other dishes are pretty good also.
M. T.
Best sushi-place in London! The quality of the food is definitely high and better than other well know/famous/posh sushi restaurant in London...a must have in London. Prices reflect the quality. Also take away available
K. G.
Delicious food and great set menu for lunch. Should book in advance as it gets very busy
n. a.
Great place for a quick tea break but the indoor seating is terrible. The shop has a table at the far end but that is normally covered with stock or a customer has taken up the whole space.
There is outdoor seating which isn't great ( 2-3 tables. The metal chairs can make you a little sore after a while).
The staff are friendly and the service is good.
A. K.
Splendid sushi as always, usualy just for take away, never tried dine in
U. B.
It's fair to say that there are more 'charming' or 'characterful' sushi restaurants but there are not many with better fish! For example, Toro turns up rarely on others' menus but it's a fairly safe bet here! Taken for its strengths, this place is hard to beat.
B.
Delicious sushi in an unassuming setting; the sashimi platter of the day leaves a sushi chef no where to hide but they don't need to - food if absolutely fabulous. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday they do happy hour, 5:30-7pm
E.
One of my favourite sushi places in London, and not too expensive. The starters are very nice, the beef tataki and spicy prawns being the stars of the show - cannot have too much of either dish! Well worth a visit
F. i. h. w.
Great and typical Japanese place. A bit pricey though.
J. H.
great food as always. lately, very slow service
N. H.
Excellent service - fast and friendly. Great food.
S. G.
The absolute best sushi I've had in London by quite a bit. You would never guess it from the outside--quite beaten up and in a random part of town--or from the inside for that matter (no decoration, tiny, tables squeezed close together). BUT. the food!! Amazing rolls, great specials, and wonderful sashimi. Such a hidden gem!
B. V.
This is the real deal. The best Sushi restaurant in London. I don't even want to write the review because the restaurant is already very popular with the people "in the know" and very difficult to get a table. Whilst the decor is nothing special and simply decorated, the sushi and sashimi are exceptional. Very very fresh and incredibly decent price. There are seriously so many overpriced Japanese restaurant in London and some of them offer really bad quality sushi so this is a real gem. Service is a bit chaotic (because they are so busy) and you must make sure the waitress understand your order but this is seriously my top ten. Please don't go :)
G. S.
One of my favourite restaurants in the world. Always a good experience.
C. L.
Best sushi quality in London - Just go for Sashimi it is amazing; Staff is also super friendly
P. M.
Stopped off for a quick lunch. Seemed nice. Fish fresh.
X. Y. T.
Holy amazing sushi and sashimi, Batman. Forget all other Japanese, including the Nobus and what not. If what you're truly after is good Japanese regardless of pretentious crap that more upscale places can be capable of, this is the place.
S. G.
Some of the best sushi I've had in London without the crazy high price tag I've paid for similar quality.
P. S.
Best sushi in London without the pretense of some of the Mayfair establishments or exclusivity of others.
T. O.
It's not just sushi here... Everything is fresh, authentic and reasonable!
Z. L.
Constantly good sushi. I would advise booking as it fills up.
B. P.
The menu is not particularly large but the food is good. It can get a bit expensive if you want to order deluxe plates.
B. M.
It's pretty good and good service. Slightly over priced.
A. R.
A bit expensive for the price, but at lunch times there a few deals. Service could be improved.
T. D.
One of the best medium fatty tuna sashimi in town. The chirashi bowls are delicious :)
G.
We're regulars at our local Atari-ya and the food is always excellent. Unfortunately having just returned from there tonight the thing that's prompted me to write a review is the disappointment I felt tonight.
The food was excellent as always, although recently (the past couple of months) it has been going ever so slightly downhill - they've been out of more and more menu items more frequently, and the rolled of sushi has been just a bit sloppy, extras like tobiko on an inside-out roll forgotten but left on the bill on occasion - but in the past it's been easily forgivable.
However, tonight I left with a bad taste in my mouth, despite the still good food. The service was particularly slow tonight, though they're always busy. It was during a lull in the rush when we (as usual) asked for a second look at the menu that things really went downhill - we bought a large carafe of sake to enjoy with the food, but after several attempts to wave down a waitress (despite there now being more empty tables and less of a rush with every passing minute), we ended up waiting over an hour for 2 rolls and had finished our sake by the time is arrived. I politely mentioned to a waitress that we'd waited such a long time, and were really hoping to enjoy the sake with the food, and asked if perhaps they could offer a complimentary small carafe or even glass (they're shot sized thimbles). She passed the message to the manageress who instead of offering a complimentary bottle, carafe, or even individual glass - we saw clearly looking over from a distance and deliberately waiting for us to eat the food in impatience anyway...which after over an hour we did. Then she came over, and simply explained they'd been very busy, didn't offer a real apology but paid passing lip service to one, and offered no indication of valuing us as regular customers at all. I didn't bother arguing but had clearly seen several people seated next to us after we'd placed our second order, who'd been served first, and had even paid the bill and left. I firmly believe we were treated this way because she'd started taking us for granted as regular customers, and simply won't bother going back if they don't value us.
D. H.
Atari-Ya is always a winner when you're in the mood for authentic and delicious Japanese food and the staff are so helpful. My local for over 15 years!
A. S.
Worth making the trip out (and close to the underground so not too hard). We had a set lunch for £13, which had an amuse bouche, tempura, salad, miso soup, sushi and fruit. We were very impressed by the quality of the fish (which speaks to the pedigree of the chain as a fishmonger). Will definitely be returning.
M. K.
Amazing sushi & sashimi. Now a weekly regular with the occasional take-away :)
G. S.
Was Exceptional, Now MUCH Less So. The quality of ingredients remains very high and the execution is generally - although not uniformly - very good; but service has fallen away dramatically. Speed of output from the kitchen appears to have slowed dramatically since Xmas / New Year and front of house has slipped. Not uncommon to ring for a takeaway during business hours and receive no response after multiple rings; takeaways are repeatedly late; and the staff's increasingly casual attitude appears to be slipping into sloppiness. A great shame. I'll still order from here when they bother to pick up the phone but it's now because there is nothing better in the vicinity rather than because I'm anxious to give them business.
A. G.
Excellent sushi - fresh and consistently good.
s. g.
Excellent restaurant with great food and atmosphere
A. F.
Food is ok but price is a little salty
K. R.
I love Japanese food, and when I saw this place busy in the middle of a work day in Swiss Cottage, I knew I had to try it. Food was great! Jasmine flower tea was sweet and fragrant, Tori karaage chicken cooked to perfection... a simple, delicious meal. A fresh seaweed and cucumber salad just topped it off. It's slightly on the pricey side for not being in the centre of London, but still well worth the visit. Will definitely be back!
S. V. d. B.
Gyoza are to die for. Really fast and welcoming service. Tasty traditional Japanese cuisine.
K. Y.
I may be biased as sushi where I live in this price range is an absolute disaster, and I couldn't afford the more expensive sushi joints in London (nor here at home), but I consider this one of the best sushis I ever ate.
Sure, it looks like a 90s cafeteria, the plastic trays look like they're from crap sushi delivery places and the "grass" they use as barriers between the rolls is just sad.
But show me a better place where I can stuff my face with top grade fresh sushi for 20 quid and maybe I'll lower my rating then.
T. R.
Good sushi and nice atmosphere
N. G.
Great value local Japanese spot that’s always packed.
A. B.
The sushi is excellent. The fish is full of flavor and fresh. Worth the ride from central London.
C. N.
Some of the best sushi in London. Try the Spider roll and the Eel and avocado.
J. C.
The best sushi in London. Hands down
C.
The sashimi is so fresh. The price is reasonable and go for black sesame ice cream dessert.
P. B.
“Best sushi in Camden.” That was my review years ago, which I am now dropping from 5 to 3 stars, as management changed a bit less than a year ago, and I’m afraid the magic is gone now. The departure of most of the Japanese staff was not a good sign. We are now charged more for less and the signs of cost cutting are obvious.
A. K.
Perfectly executed rice, divine fatty tuna, patience with our little terrors and even pleased a sushi-averse refugee with a tonkatsu. Thank you!
A. G.
Good quality sushi which is affordable
D. E. C.
I just love this place, it has a very authentic feel
M. L.
This place is the real deal - the kind of neighborhood sushi bar with Japanese chefs behind the counter, where the staff shout "irasshaimase" when you enter, and "arigato gozaimasu" when you leave. There are plenty of Japanese customers - and not to mention a version of the specials menu in Japanese.
The company that owns Atari-ya is also a fish importer - and this is reflected in the sushi. The fish was wonderfully fresh, and it was a pleasure to see medium-fat and fatty tuna on the menu - a rarity in London. Set sushi plates range from £17-£31, which feels a little pricey - but worth it, considering the quality of fish.
Decor is a little on the functional side - but absolutely worth looking past this and giving the food a try. Ask to be seated at the counter for a ring-side view of the chefs at work.
S. S.
Always good. Food is amazing
O. L.
Currently my favorite place for sushi
N. L.
Four stars for the food. Six stars for the value/quality ratio.
M. S. Z.
The best sushi ever
J. M.
The Combination Lunch A (sashimi) and B (sushi) are exceptionally good value. You get in the sushi version (B) the following in this order: 1) A small portion of leafy salad with very tasty Japanese dressing, some pickles and a small bowl of miso soup 2) Tempura (2 prawn, 2 veg) 3) the main board of sushi (3 nigiri: salmon, tuna, prawn, 3 tuna roll, 3 california roll) then finally 4) small fruit plate. The quality of taste and presentation is excellent for what you pay. With a pot of green tea and maybe an extra "fusion" roll to share on the side, it makes an excellent sushi/sashimi lunch for less than £20 per head. We would prefer it if the miso soup were served at the end instead of at the beginning (next time we will ask for that), especially on a cold winter's day. We really miss the Hendon branch of the shop, but this one near Finchley Rd/Swiss Cottage is very nice too.

Always good, service is generally quick, sushi, sashimi, rolls, chirashi, always consistently good and excellent. Good value for money, particularly their lunch time menu.
A shame we do not have an authentic japanese in Milton Keynes at all, so we end up at least once a month driving just to London to eat here. Worth the petrol and effort! The Hendon branch is also good, same prices, same menu but even more casual atmosphere, but same quality. Atari Ya, we love you!

Best chirashi don in town

One of the best Japanese in town

You can tell this restaurant is a dining outlet of a fish-trader. Spectacularly fresh sashimi, with an emphasis on seasonal fare (yes, fish does have seasons too!), plus a wider range of staples. Chirashi offers a slightly cheaper option for a mix of fish, but I'd highly recommend the mixed sashimi for pure pescatarian joy.

I absolutely love this sushi restaurant. I live in the neighborhood and order takeaway a couple times per month (much cheaper to call it in and pick up rather than Deliveroo). The fish is always delicious, I’m saddened to hear that others have thought it tasted frozen or metallic. I wouldn’t compare this place to any Michelin restaurants, it’s not that kind of place. It’s a simple, clean, homey place that also happens to supply delicious sushi-grade fish for many decent restaurants in London. The people who work there have been consistently nice on the phone and in person. They even have a little shop corner with extra Japanese food supplies you may need, everything from extra gari to frozen speciality meats (kalbi and yakiniku) and fresh fish collars and sake. The prices reflect the quality and area but also don’t break the bank. I couldn’t recommend them more.
