Reviews of The Source Bulk Foods Battersea
k.
i come here once a week for a few snacks and always eat them within a day, try as i might to save them for later. the quality of everything here is brilliant and tastes amazing (the pistachio turkish delight, chocolate covered coffee beans and smoked almonds are stand-outs but everything ive tried has been lovely!). everything is clearly labelled which makes it helpful when im trying to find vegan products and the staff are very friendly too. i look forward to every single one of my visits here

The Source Bulk Foods is on my daily walk and next to the coffee shop where I have my mid-walk break. I had judged it just another don’t-need-it, healthy-foody posh shop. I passed many times before entering, of curiosity perhaps, but to be honest, I was looking for trouble. A tiny place so it was just a minute to take it in and make my way to the back where my attention was drawn to huge vats of olive oil. An associate approached and asked if she could help. (I learned later her name is Ellie and she deserves her own review). Whatever my question was, it led to being offered a taste of olive oil. Their Duvichus EVO tasted good and, somewhat more objectively, had the almost unbearable peppery aftertaste that shows polyphenols. Price caught my attention: one third the high-end EVO from Ocado. I think the Ocado EVO is better, but not by much and not worth 3x the price. No way was I buying a glass bottle to take home some olive oil, so declined, but of politeness bought £2 pounds of dried figs to have with my coffee. The figs may have been the most delicious food I have ever eaten—probably not and just my fleeting impression. Or Ellie put a spell on them. I came back the next day with a plastic water bottle and filled up on olive oil, paid £5 pounds… and that was the start of my journey.
I self-categorise as a high-quality/good-value shopper. I’ll gladly part with £5 for 18 grams of sublime coffee beans (Sea Island Coffee--South Kensington) but I do respect value. For me, The Source is about high-quality and good value. I will boldly assert that every item is 30% better value than anywhere else I find, online, Whole Foods, Waitrose… anywhere. Sometimes the same price but 30% better quality, sometimes the same quality but 30% cheaper. Then breakouts like the EVO at 2x better value. Not apparent is how much stuff is in that store, until you realise that every product is in one single bin or jar and not on several shelf-meters dedicated to packaged versions of different brands of the same thing. So that little store goes on and on and on. An exception to my quality/value measure: butter beans are the same price I get online in bulk and to me same quality. Up to you if shopping online is a net convenience, and a whole other topic is that the online 1000 grams of beans comes with 200 grams of packaging and the ICE was running in the van while waiting for you to answer the doorbell.
Tasting is allowed, just ask and then take (a lot of) care about hygiene. Dried vanilla. Nori flakes. Macadamia nuts are painfully expensive, but cheap enough that I don’t feel I should be counting them as I eat. Dorset sea salt (unbelievable—I snack on it licking my finger and dipping it in a bowl of salt then pretending I am at a salt lick on an African savanna and not a Zoom call. Shockingly expensive, utterly worth it). Herbal teas, try ginger and turmeric golden glow, then make iced tea. Country of origin is labelled on each bin. Preservatives or sulphites (such as in some dried fruit) they are shown in bold on the label on the bin. They do have dried fruit with no preservations at all—ask for the roadkill organic apricots. Added sugar is clearly labelled, dried blueberries and cranberries. Super foods are affordable. I may never ever know if they do any good, but I can afford to use a tablespoon instead of a half teaspoon–since more must be better, dial up the placebo power and heap it on. Psyllium is expensive but has no insecticide residue I can detect. Coffee is just ok, and so far the only item that I judge a missed target.
Knowledge and commitment of the staff is hard to convey—like nurses in a top hospital. Behind the scenes I sense the guiding force of half-mad totalitarian quality genius like a Steve Jobs of bulk seeds and beans (who may not be a coffee drinker). Visit The Source before Whole Foods buys them. And ask for Ellie. And good luck! Their What3Words is (are?) agenda.brass.remind

Very cool place. So many things you can literally kit out your entire pantry if you have enough jars/containers. Great for the environment and also well priced do you don't feel like you're paying for the novelty. The staff were also really friendly. Will be getting some jars and heading back with a long list to stock up with! Even have washing powders, hair oils etc so not just food

Love this store - has everything we need for a eco conscious living and prices are good. Amanda is always so wonderful and welcoming, we feel like we are popping into a local neighbourhood store, not a shop in a big city.

The staff are all super friendly and helpful. I love the layout of the shop and generally the vibe is joyful and welcoming :) excellent products and I feel good refilling to reduce waste!

The best bulk no waste shop in London. Amazing range. Very friendly and helpful staff. I cannot recommend this enough for any environmentally minded or vegan person in the area.
T. B.
Helpful staff and a great range - including cleaning vinegar, different cooking oils and plenty of hand wash options. The choice of chocolate coated nuts and other sweets is worth admission alone.
Once you get the hang of the weighing and packing process it is actually quite efficient - plus you choose exactly how much you want. Little jars for spices are also cheap at £1.20.

Great place to pick up plastic free goods and bulk buy. They could do with more scales to way your containers for when it's busy.
F. S.
The shop is really great and it is actually way easier to shop non-plastic/less packaging thank I thought. I
It would definitely have 5 stars I only wish that it offered also a "cheap" option of what it has in store. I try to shop here to reduce my pollution footprint so I am not interested in the vegan/organic.
I get that it is hard to offer competitive prices, but if things had one cheaper alternative it would definitely help people on my budget to shop more zero-packaging and help the planet!
A. T.
I’ve been here few time. It’s great to be able to buy without packaging. They have oil, soap, shampoo that you can get with your own container or from the store. They sell jars, so nothing to worry about. They have paper bags for grains, pasta, etc if you do not have a container, so nothing to worry about!
I love they seashell pasta!
A. K.
My absolute favourite place to shop for zero-waste products. Lovely staff too!
K. J.
All round amazing. I have received the best customer service and the products are fantastic. I live in Northern Ireland where there isn't a physical store but Pat and the team have gone out of their way to circumvent website limitations and ensure I am able to order online seamlessly, with promises to look into expanding the website capabilities. Communication has always been wonderful with immediate and cheerful responses. I can't recommend them highly enough.
A. P.
Best bulk shop in Clapham area, staff is super friendly and they have so many options. Let's all be more ecofriendly :)
R. M.
Brilliant waste free grocer. Prices are fair and reasonable and the products are ethical and sustainable. Take your own bag or grab something recyclable in the shop. They do a great loyalty scheme which pays back as a discount on each subsequent shop. Great way to get your dried, pantry and basic beauty products.
R. H.
Lovely staff and an excellent selection of plastic-free groceries. Had so much more than I was expecting. I'll be coming back just for the delicious chocolate covered macadamia nuts 🤤
M. H.
Great selection, super friendly and Knowledgeable staff.
A. T.
Phenomenal big store with almost all the basics and some more you may need in a house. Loads of foods and cleaning products, and even some kombucha on tap. A heaven place for vegan snacks and also excellent selection of tools, jars, bamboo utensils - great for you and as gifts. The staff is super knowledgeable and fun, I wish I have always purchased in this store! Looking forward to more plastic free places everywhere!
A. E.
The organic products are really well-priced in comparison to supermarkets, and sourced to minimise impact on people and planet (staff are generally pretty clued up when asked where things were grown etc).
The new click and collect service has been really helpful and efficient during lockdown.
My only complaint would be that nobody stops me buying large bags of chocolate buttons every time I visit the shop, which is wreaking havoc with my waistline.
T. K.
A model bulk foods shop. Squeaky clean. Nicely spaced with logical layout. The wide range of products are displayed and labelled clearly. I was well impressed by the atmosphere as well. I was new and they could tell, but the staff were all kind and patient. Have a list for my return!
W. D.
Full of everything you can think of in bulk bins. No plastic bags in sight. Loved the range. Pices are alright.. but slightly no ore expensive because most stuff is an organic version. Wish there was just a shop like this without everything having to be organic.
M. C.
It’s like they’ve read my mind and have all the things I want in bulk. Super helpful staff, great selection including tons of organics. Absolutely LOVE this store. I’m surprised by some of the comments on price - I found it really reasonable. I got a huge bag of organic granola for £4 - grocery was similar and not organic or as yummy. I also think people don’t realize that this is what quality food costs when it’s not coming from big corporations or supported by government subsidies - and helping the environment to boot! But, I’m happy to pay £3-5 more a week (the cost of a latte) for a bag of groceries that help the planet and my body.

I'm so happy I found this place. A great selection of nuts, pastas, rices, grains, cereals, dried fruits, fresh olive oils, teas and more. No annoying and unnecessary plastic packaging, no plastic bags. You can either use paper bags or use your own jars. Products are ethically sourced and a lot of it's organic. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Get a loyalty membership and if you spend over £10 you get money off your next shop. Highly recommend.
Z. Z.
Super friendly staff and great choice of products. It's great to be able to buy zero waste! Will definitely be coming back.
V. W.
I stumbled across SBF in Australia, and was so glad they're now in the UK. Concept is easy - you fill jars or paper bags with the items you want and they're weighed at the till. Any jars you bring have to be pre-weighed. Really big selection and a lot of organics at really amazing prices. Very boutique feel. Great of you're going plastic free. They even do protein powder (tiramisu flavour!), dried egg noodles, and homemade granolas. Plus they have Kombucha on tap and a nut butter grinder. Just wow.
D. Z.
Amazing shop, they selections is fabulous, with organic, gluten free or not options of pretty much everything.
Lots of cheeky healthy snacks (banana chips, chocolate/yogurt raisins or nuts....)
The staff is really friendly and helpful.
They are very reasonably priced.
I wish it was one of them on every high street, that would be the way forward to help us all reduce our plastic👍🏼👍🏼
Please bring the next one in brixton🙏🏻🙏🏻
Keep up the good work for our 🌎

Great spot to try to reduce your use of plastic. You can buy as little or as much as you like, bring your container or use the paper bags provided. It's not cheap, but the stuff is good. And it makes you feel good! The staff is all super lovely and helpful. And I love the gigant salted corn and the chocolate coated freeze dried strawberries!
J. R.
Disappointing treatment from staff. I opened the door to ask if they still had flour left to save waiting if they didn't. A member of staff shouted down the store very rudely "No, you have to wait outside until someone comes out".
It was not a pleasant experience and having shopped here many times in the past, I will not be back. Such a shame as I would rather shop locally but don't appreciate being spoken to like that. I only wanted to ask a question.
M. M.
What a great bulk shop! They have everything from dry pastas to chocolate (yum!) Definitely coming back. Everyone who works there are super lovely and attentive. Can’t wait to come back to get more goodies for my pantry. Please open a shop in North West London!! X
B. S.
Amazing place to get all you need free from plastic! Love almond butter ❤️❤️❤️ as well I was very surprised as organic product cost is only 10p more than regular ones, so clearly filled my bag with loads of organic goodies this time 🙏
D.
OK. This place is great. Good selection of products with incredibly attentive staff. The space itself is large and layed out well. Given its claim of being a bulk seller combined with the fact that you provide your own packaging I'm forced to dock a star over the prices. Comparable products in local supermarkets are significantly cheaper.
R. A.
I absolutely love this shop. They have such a good selection of foods. I always take my glass jars with me and fill them up. Ni unnecessary packaging and waste.
O. H.
Great shop if you are trying to reduce single use plastics in your life. Good selection, helpful staff.
N. I.
Delicious peanut butter, no additive. I like the concept of no plastic as well.
j. h.
Small but interesting. They seem to stock slightly unusual items, so it's pretty good if you don't typically buy the usual Corn Flakes & Coca Cola guff that most supermarkets stuff their shelves with.
N. B.
Ethical shopping at it's best. Guilt free shopping experience, knowing you are doing something good for the planet. Great range of products, super friendly staff, always love shopping here.
E. C.
Like adult pick 'n' mix! A wide selection of packaging free products to purchase by weight. Such a good range
A. A.
Great place, so many options! I felt like a kid in a candy store, but instead of candy there was healthy foods and snack! It will soon become my favourite shop! Great selection!
D. H.
Be careful can be expensive but good and nice ethos ethics to the shop.
C. B.
This shop is an upmarket version of a shop that I used to go to called weigh and save, you weigh what you want, then pay at the counter. There should be more shops like this around, it just makes so much sense.
R. G. C.
Love this place!! A wide variety of items and of great quality, very reasonable prices, super friendly and helpful staff... and "the source tribe VIP" rewards!!! Basically, there is nothing negative to say about this place... a must if you pass by Clapham or nearby!!!
R. S.

It was my first time shopping here and will defiantly go back. Everything is loose so you only buy what you need. Staff are very friendly, helpful and polite.

I love this store! This is the only package free shop in London I could find with so many alternatives and snacks! Staff is lovely and helpful too!
