Reviews of Turkish Food Supermarket
O. P.
I write my reviews from the perspective of a wheelchair user. I am very appreciative that this shop exists. I went there primarily looking for dates, but I was very excited to see a lot more. Their Turkish green peppers are the best I have ever had, absolutely delicious--Far more flavourful than their counterpart, Romano peppers!
*Their bread selection was a nice treat I didn't expect to find. I love so far their (what I call) "Lavash". This is a bread I have not seen in any other shop here in the UK, and I was pleased to find it! They had both the yeast version, and the version without yeast.
* Their spices are good prices, but only wish there were larger packages of some of them.
*I was surprised to see some products there from Eastern Europe, which unless I go online to a specialty Eastern European supermarket, would never find.
*Other discoveries: Great, delicious smelling Turkish coffee! Nice size selection of Turkish delight, of course! And there were all sorts of products including coconut milk, puddings, canned beans, snacks, biscuits, crackers, drinks. etc. which were also convenient to buy there.
* I was especially excited to find coarse cornmeal, which in the UK, is nearly impossible to find in an actual shop in person, and also difficult to find at fair prices online, but I bought a 1kg bag for a negligible amount of money. They also had the finer corn meal/flour, which in case you don't know, is different from corn starch, which they also have. As someone who bakes with these, good to find, also gram flour aka Chickpea flour, yet another thing I rarely see in shops, and is great for the unleavened bread I personally like to make.
*What I was really looking for, the dates, I found, and not just one variety, nope, they had so many for excellent prices! Unbeatable prices in fact. They had 1. Iranian fresh Mazafati dates in at least two brands, which are succulent and delicious!! For 550 gram boxes at all around 3 quid each, it is a huge bargain! 2. What I call Deglet Nour aka Branch Dates from Tunisia, nice sweet flavour, a date we all know well in the west, but usually have to pay a lot more for. A 500 gram box was only 2.50. 3. A budget date from Saudi Arabia, but good for what I need it for, Jumbo dates called "Khurdi", in a nice box, 880 grams for just under a fiver, even though they aren't Medjool, still, this is an excellent price. 4. The most fascinating dates were the Piarom variety, that had travelled all over the world, originating in India, to then be here in this shop. So yes, I did indeed get plenty of dates at a very good price.
*Even though a lot of society would prefer to go to a shiny supermarket, I am not like this, and this is even the case with my wheelchair-- of course it would be easier for me to access a supermarket, although a lot of the major chains do still have their issues, but for me personally, I would rather peruse and buy from this place any day. Was it a little bit difficult to get around? Yes, I am going to be completely honest, it was. Most small shops are. I got stuck on every corner, but I was helped by the staff to move things--"little obstacles" out of my way, so I could continue to shop. They don't even do that in mega supermarkets, nope. They leave the barriers up, and if I can't move them myself, they don't care, and I have to go around the shop again until I find an aisle where I can then get access to the one I needed in the first place.
*I have to say that for a small shop, clearly not set up for wheelchair users, it was not that bad. Yes, in any shop there is the issue of reaching products, but because this shop is run by nice and friendly people who are observant, they were happy to help. As much as I hate to have to be a burden on them, sometimes I cannot reach things on the top shelf, so it was nice to not have to go hunt someone down in order to get to a product. It was a relief actually! A rare one!
*People like me, get told to stay in and order online. Why should we? So, it's great to find a place that has great customer service! Thank you!
*Try this shop!
