Plenty of items for sale and locally grown veg. Reasonably priced.

Alligator is a fab shop - we have been shopping there weekly for over 10 years. They have an amazing range, particularly if you have any specific dietary needs or a love of foods from different countries, we have fallen in love with products from Alligator which we simply wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. The staff are very friendly, kind, helpful and knowledgeable. They are also very willing to order in specific products for you and offer discounts for bulk buying products. A huge range of products are available without packaging, making them more environmentally friendly and cheaper. If you haven't been there, I urge you to give it a try!

What a superb shop! We're really appreciating all the fresh organic produce, and now an assortment of beans and lentils that we measure out ourselves and bring home in a paper bag ...no plastic. This is great addition to the nuts, seeds, rice etc that can also be bought loose.

This is a lovely local independent shop with friendly staff and a great selection of products, including many ethical and organic; for your needs. I have been many times and they even have a loyalty stamp system which I use. Do pay a visit.

We have been Alligator customers for years and get deliveries every week. Its a brilliant shop and a real York institution, lots of organic and unsprayed produce from local suppliers and an amazing chocolate range. Fairtrade, less plastic, low prices, and organic has been their approach since the 70s. I come out in a better mood than when I go in which is my test of a great atmospere and staff.

Lovely shop! Excellent for all of your zero-waste aspirations, though extortionate prices. Be prepared however for stock shortage, rude staff and the owner's bitter attitude... and breath!

Love this place for loose dried goods (porridge, pasta, rice, muesli , coffee beans etc), organic veg, fresh bread, locally produced natural yoghurt in glass jars and refills of laundry liquid, softener, washing up liquid etc. Only negative is that some products are still sold in plastic packaging, which I would buy if they weren't.

Aligator is a gift to this community given every day by the devotion of the whole team of workers including Steve who works, runs and owns - recently extending their range to include a deli style counter of carefully selected vegetarian cheeses; a visit to aligators is a joy and an education as well as enabling us all to eat and live well - locally sourced produce as far as possible policy includes wondeful flowers, samosas and brownies, intersting balms and organic fresh veg - my favourite shop!!!
