Reviews of DC Tours - Belfast Walking Tours
Amazing walking tour given by Gabriel! He was extremely knowledgeable, engaging and friendly. This is absolutely a must-do tour if you are visiting Belfast. DC Tours made it super easy to book as well - everything went off with out a hitch. Thanks so much to Gabriel and the rest of DC tours!
Highly knowledgeable and passionate tour guide Steve Malone was engaging, fascinating and I could’ve listened for hours more! Recommended 10/10 if you’re ever in Belfast and want to learn about its rich political history. Different points of view exposed and putting events in context make this an immersive experience even for people without much knowledge of Northern Ireland or the Troubles.
Superb walking tour that gives a very detailed and very balanced history. Our guide Steve was absolutely wonderful - extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and hospitable. This is a must-do, highly suggest doing it at the start of your stay in Belfast.
A very informative walking tour of Belfast with James. He shared the history of the Troubles adding in his personal experiences while being completely unbiased and totally respectful. A worthwhile and educational tour.
At the history of Belfast tour today presented by Steve Malone .
Well I'm a history buff and even I learnt a few things and its not often I can say that.
Steve is a must for a visitor to Belfast to learn of past and recent history.
Brilliant! An amazing and detail oriented tour. Steve, our guide, walked us through the history of the troubles from a profound and empathetic perspective. Totally recommendable.
Interesting, informative, and a great introduction to the city center. Mark was a great guide with personal knowledge and years of insight. Would recommend this highly to anyone coming through.
Did the History of Terror tour with Paul as our guide. Despite the rainy Belfast day, it was an amazing and eye-opening tour of the spots in Belfast that is intertwined with its history because of the Troubles. Especially his experience as a mediator for both sides added perspective on the real issues and peoples still experiencing the lasting effects of the Troubles. Highly recommended!!!!
Very informative walking tour around Belfast! Would highly recommend it, especially if you want a good history of Belfast.
Just had a great 2 hour with Kerena. Very informative, educational and enjoyable. Seeing Belfast and the history of Ireland with new eyes.
Insightful tour and very engaging guide! Brings the history to life in a respectful but challenging way! Good way to get your bearings of the city too.
Steve Malone was an amazing tour guide, full of interesting details on the history of Ireland and the troubles. I would highly recommend taking a tour with him
Steve was our guide and he was captivating He knew his subject so well and gave a clear unbiased account of the troubles in Belfast Highly recommended
Great tour that was very understandable for members of my group that were not deeply versed in Northern Irish politics and history. Highly recommended.
I did the History of Terror tour with a group of friends on Saturday and do not have enough good things to say about it! Our guide, James, was fantastic - extremely knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the subject matter. Having lived all my life in Northern Ireland I was surprised at how much I learned about the history of Belfast and it’s troubled past. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone, whether you’re a visitor to our lovely country or a cynical native like me!
Fantastic walking tour. Extremely informative and factual. Would recommend to anyone interested in the history of Northern Ireland.
Amazing tour - super informative, and non biased. Steve explained everything really well - great sound system also - so was easy to hear even amongst noisy traffic.
Great The Troubles Tour with James. James has an obvious passion for both politics and history as well as a love for Belfast that comes across in his tour. This is a solid 3 hours of information so come prepared to focus, the tour itself can be quite confusing as it follows the geography meaning you are jumping back and forth in time and trying to track the events and the many participants takes a lot of concentration.
Gave a really good feel to what happened in the early 70s and the impact on the local population. An unbiased tour filled with facts letting you draw your own conclusions and certainly a lot more to learn beyond the city centre and after 1975.
I would say an essential for anyone new to the area.
Our tour guide Gabe was fantastic and the tour itself very well structured and thought out! Being local, we perhaps had more knowledge of the events discussed, however, this did not prevent us from learning new incidents of our history or gaining a broader perspective of the causes of these events. Delivered from a completely impartial standpoint, Gabe is an excellent narrator and I look forward to returning for the other tours on offer. Thank you!
I took the virtual 'tour' and really enjoyed it. The guides covered an enormous amount of history clearly, succinctly, and with a compassionate eye to the experiences of the individuals involved. I learned a lot and was so impressed by how well the tour was constructed, especially given that it was an online-only event. I hope to visit Northern Ireland again one day and take the tour in person, and would recommend this to anyone interested in Irish history or planning a trip there.
Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Belfast, even just for a day. There were just 2 of us in our group but our guide did a wonderful job of giving us a personal tour and making it conversational. He was very knowledgeable and gave great insight on the Troubles.
This was a brilliant tour - so much info and really made the conflict a reality with so many individual stories and events. Very emotional. Would definitely recommend for people visiting Belfast to get some history and context as to how they go to where things are today.
James was an amazing guide sharing his knowledge about Belfast and the Troubles. Strongly recommended to understand more about nowadays Belfast and its past.
Gabe was a fabulously knowledgeable for guide. He was welcoming and made everyone feel at ease. He appeared to have a genuine passion for his job. Would definitely recommend.
Absolutely fantastic tour. Our guide (Mark) was a great speaker and he did a really good job diving into the history of Belfast and the Troubles. It’s definitely an intense experience but was probably my favorite part of my trip. Loved that the tour also talked about a lot of coalition-building and regeneration efforts and it’s really impactful to get this kind of account from someone who lived it. Would recommend to everyone with an interest in learning about what happened.
An informative, balanced and thorough explanation of the issues and forces at play, taking the listener from origins of the troubles to the affects still felt in the present day. Our tour guide was extremely articulate and kept the audience fascinated for the full 2.30 hours. Strong, strong recommendation to start your journey of Belfast discovery here. Thanks again!
This was a fantastic tour and I'm really glad that I made the booking. . The tour lasts for about 2 and a half hours but it definitely doesn't feel as long that.
Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and made for a very interesting and informative tour. He led us around Belfast's city centre and pointed out various points where Northern Ireland's historic conflict had erupted into violence. This was by no means a cursory description or box-ticking exercise but real in-depth history from someone with good knowledge of the conflict and first hand experience.
I feel like I was left with a much better sense of what The Troubles were and the legacy that they continue to leave - in particular I was struck by the young age of so many of the participants . I would recommend this tour to anyone who plans to visit Belfast.
Skip the Guiness and beer tours if you’re in Ireland. This is the best spent money of our trip. A true unbiased and supremely informative tour around the city that gets to the heart of conflict and humanity. Thanks very much to our guide! Even on a rainy day you made it worthwhile.
Highly highly recommend. I wanted to take a history tour and there are many options. I saw this mentioned in the New York Times and it was very high quality. The tour met at 10:30 and lasted 2.5 hours. Mark was our guide. He had deep personal knowledge of the Troubles and his experience growing up in Belfast. He gave a neutral narrative, which helped us get a broader perspective of what happened and how it shaped the city. The walk was easy, he uses ear pieces so everybody can hear, and you get to see alot of city centre.
Highly recommend. Our tour guide Mark gave us a very informative tour in which the total history of the political conflict was discussed. Mark, who studied anthropology, is an excellent and enthusiastic speaker and answered questions thoroughly. In contrary to other tour guides we had in Ireland, not too many prepared jokes which is good.
The best part is that the tour tries to give a neutral view of the conflict. The background of the guide was revealed in the end (maybe should not be revealed at all?).
Brilliant guide (Mark) took us on a tour of Belfast's troubled past, beginning at City Hall, into the commercial area via Royal Avenue and over to the Cathedral Quarter, then finishing on the banks of the Lagan, stopping at seemingly innocuous locations that turned out to be drenched in the history of the place, as well as some relevant examples of street art. You don't go in anywhere, there are no memorials to view (and the reason for that is explained). However this is not a criticism: apart from a few well-chosen photographic props, the tour's success rests solely on the impressive expertise and experience of the guide, who, it should be said, strives for neutrality in this account of 'The Troubles'. The story is told from the point of view of us ordinary civilians – with a bit of healthy humorous cynicism thrown in for good measure. Highly recommended.
Brilliant, informative, balanced and comprehensively researched tour. An excellent insight into the city's recent past, telling the most important perspective: the human story. I learnt a lot, and I've lived here all my life. Highly recommended.
This is an astonishingly good tour. It provided a comprehensive (and impartial) background to the Troubles. It explored the roots, consequences and contemporary lessons of the conflict and the guide used anecdotes/photos to give a deeper insight into the day-to-day reality of life in the Troubles. I could not recommend it more. If I could give 6 stars, I would!
I was also really impressed at the lengths the guide went to in order to make this Covid-secure. He wore a mask, offered sanitiser and maintained social distancing at all times.
An absolute must for anyone visiting Belfast. Thoroughly interesting and engaging, Paul was a great tour guide with a wealth of knowledge and first hand experience of the troubles in Belfast. Highly recommended!
Informative, factual and very knowledgeable tour guides. By far and away the best tour in Belfast. Cant recommend it highly enough.
I'm so glad I booked this tour. Mark was excellent and I learnt so much about not only The Troubles, but about Irish History.
Well worth it! 👌🏾
Professional guiding. Very skilled guide, who gave us a wonderful insight into the history of Belfast. Definitely recommend.
It was a very informative tour james was a very good guide 👍
For anyone looking for an informed, clear, and passionate tour through this turbulent period, DC Tours is absolutely on the money. Absolutely worth it!
As a Belfast native who grew up during the Troubles, I was keen to see what a balanced Troubles’ walking tour would cover. Dead Centre was recommended by a friend as a non-partisan organisation who provide an account of the city's recent past.
Starting at City Hall, our guide Mark gave us a brief historical overview of the last 800 years in order to provide some context to the events of the late 1960s and 70s. Given the sheer number of attacks and atrocities Belfast witnessed over the years, there is always the risk of information overload. However, Mark focused on a small number of attacks carried out by Loyalists and Republicans that demonstrated how the cycle of violence was perpetuated and how the last atrocity often triggered the next. Mark was happy to take questions throughout the tour and as we made our way down Castle Lane into Cornmarket he provided fascinating detail about the various incidents and showed photographs of the events he described.
We had an interesting discussion outside the Harp Bar on Hill Street, home to Belfast’s vibrant punk scene in the late 1970s- a scene that was non-sectarian, but which existed against the backdrop of a low-intensity civil war. This part of the tour triggered a lot of memories for me of growing up, working and hanging out in Belfast 30 years ago.
The tour finished at Oxford Street where we had a discussion on the legacy of the Troubles and how much the city has changed since the peace process and the Good Friday Agreement.
DC Tours’ emphasis on highlighting the plight of all the innocent victims of the period made them my first option. If you’re a first-time visitor to Belfast, in terms of content and delivery, I can’t recommend this tour enough.
Don't miss this tour. Our guide (Paul) was obviously much more than a guide. He has deep professional experience in addressing the trauma of terror, including work with participants, released prisoners, on both sides of the conflict. He is himself a product of the history of terror that he introduced us to... an impressive, inspiring expression of a traumatized community working to heal itself. For me, Paul himself was the most compelling element of the tour.
I wholeheartedly reccomend the DC History of Terror tour in Belfast. Our tour guide Mark was extremely knowledgeable, giving us unbiased insight into The Troubles. He provided us with facts, first-hand accounts, and put an emphasis on stories from the innocent community members/victims on both sides.
DC Tours customer service was also top notch. After my bus broke down and it looked like I wasn't going to make the tour on time, Mark was extremely quick to reply and accommodated my needs by switching my booking to a different tour date.
Brilliant tour guides. Loved every minute. Very knowledgeable and fun.
Visitors AND locals need this tour! And it's far from bleak - plenty of heart and lots of knowledge.
Very informative, highly recommended
Sensational tour - had Adam who was very informative and clear!
Fantastic, informative, enjoyable. Well worth doing if you're in Belfast.
