Reviews of Auld Reekie Tours

Darren was a brilliant guide. He was super witty and gave us loads of really interesting information and stories about the vaults. He even offered to answer any questions we had after the tour finished. Value for money is amazing considering how personal it felt. One hour flew by, we wish we could have been there longer. We were so interested in the stories he told us we continued our research when we got home! We would highly recommend this tour to everyone, especially those who like the darker history of an old and (potentially) haunted city. We got our tickets at the tourist kiosk towards the top of the Royal Mile (outside the Bank of Scotland) the day before.

Really interesting tour this morning of the underground vaults (and the walk to it) with Josh as our tour guide. He kept us all informed, entertained and jumping out of our skin (ok maybe that was just me)! Highly recommended

The Vaults Tour is a must if you like to learn of the darker side to a city’s history. It was so fascinating to learn and see what was below the city and Stewart did a most fantastic job of conveying a very dark history in a funny and informative way. The vaults are not for the faint hearted and I love it all the more for this. If Stewart’s boss is reading this ~ Give the lad a raise

Had a tour today with Andrew and it was fantastic! A real eye opener to the underworld of old Edinburgh and of course his love of torture devices (no customers were harmed in the process lol). The tour was detailed and contained a lot of information and the access to the South Bridge vaults in such original condition was fascinating as was the walk from the tour starting spot to the vaults themselves as the guide will stop at a few locations and give you history about those too! Don’t hesitate to book this tour!

Adrian was our guide and he did a great job. We did the greyfriers graveyard and vaults tour. So 40 mins in each with a bit of walking inbetween. Interesting stories of history, ghosts and Harry Potter. I’d recommend it. Only slight issues were the traffic and hearing difficulties at times
J. W.
Absolutely loved the tour of the vaults. Our guide Frazer was great. Very humorous while conveying some great facts. My girlfriend has only remembered the fact about where the saying ‘hang over’ comes from. For anyone that has never been to Edinburgh before, I would strongly recommend this tour. We’re even considering doing it a second time before we leave. So creepy to think of all the things that have happened in the vaults. Pictures don’t do it justice.

Frazer was fantastic… he was very knowledgeable- the tour was a real eye opener to the dark history of medieval life and living conditions in Edinburgh … my husband walked through the stone circle and now his jokes are even worse! Frazer- your hair looked great and you were very friendly and funny 😄
A. M.
Diva was our tour guide and she was fab. Really knowledgeable, great fun and professional. We were lucky and had a small group so it all felt really personal and we all had a great time. I would recommend this tour so much, it's definitely an experience I won't forgot and will come back again for sure!
N. R.
Came on this tour expecting a laugh and a few spooky historical stories, didn’t expect to actually encounter the paranormal!
Andrew our tour guide was great fun. The only problem is that we were skeptics and now I’m convinced I saw a man who wasn’t there, and my partner caught a spooky apparition on camera so I probs won’t be sleeping well tonight…
J.
Anna was a great guide. We really enjoyed the tour and it was really spooky down there, even though it was early morning! Not sure if it was the power of suggestion but I definitely saw some movements in the shadows! It will be good to return when they open up a bit more. We were on the 10am tour and there was only 6 people! Definitely helped with the atmosphere.
K. T.
Enjoyed the underground vault tour with Darren aka ‘ken’. Really hilarious and informative though I feel that maybe he could allow us to ask questions after a few stops. Felt the tour was a tad bit rush. He could maybe scare us more as well for example a banshi scream in the completely dark vault. But I presume he was just letting us off easy.
K. J.
Great tour by Andrew, incredibly informative and engaging -!especially about the horrible histories of the landmarks and gruesome everyday practices of days gone by! The vaults are cool to see and the accompanying dramatics by Andrew added to the excitement of the tour!

My friends and I went on this tour, and it was absolutely amazing!! Our tour guide was so captivating with her knowledge on the spooky history of Edinburgh, and I loved hearing about everything she had to say. There was even a couple ghost stories that gave me the shivers, but it was nothing excessively scary.
The only thing I would say is that the vaults themselves were quite dark, so people might feel a little claustrophobic.
Overall, thank you so much for an amazing time!!
S. R.
Was an amazing tour in the vaults of Edinburgh. Frazer was our guide and he explained about the living conditions and about the dark history and stories in the vault in a good detail while keeping it light. We as a family enjoyed it a lot. Definitely worth the visit. We enjoyed thoroughly for the hour.
M. B.
The guide was knowledgeable and some good stories. Been on many similar tours on every visit to Edinburgh over the years including ones for small children. Still not sure if this was supposed to be scary or not. Website said "Not suitable for under 5s, guideline 12+" although flyer said 16+. Was about as scary as a basket full of puppies. If you want traditional jump scares, you'll be disappointed.
e. b.
Had a private tour with Fraser, who was an excellent guide, very funny and told us some great stories. We were suitably spooked 👍
Interesting walk around Greyfriars Kirkyard and saw different vaults to what I had with another company which was great!
Only downside was trying to keep up with Frasers walking pace 😂
And would’ve liked to have spent a little longer looking at the torture devices, yes I’m weird, lol

Andrew gave a great tour through the vaults in edinburgh. We enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back 😀 Thoroughly recommend Auld Reekie Tours
S. H.
We did the 9pm vaults tours. Our guide, Josh, was a fantastic story teller! It was scarier than we thought it would be, but also was as informational as it was entertaining. We had a great time - definitely recommend for getting into the dark history of Edinburgh!
L. L.
Fun and creepy. Loved our guide. My kids (11 and 13) enjoyed the tour too.
M. W.
Stewart was our guide and he was fab. He was very Knowledgeable and made it fun. I would recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh, to do this tour.
N. S.
Andrew was a fantastic guide, extremely helpful and so knowledgeable! We did the Vaults Tour, excellent history about the Royal Mile to begin with before you head into the vaults. A wee bit on the scary side though!
Be prepared for a high step on entrance, ideally a step stool is needed to assist those who struggle to step that high but there is a hand rail to help pull you up!
S. E.
Our tour guide was Andrew (I believe), and overall the tour was good. I've marked a star down for two reasons. 1. Another tour was operating at the same time so we had to skip over two parts of the graveyard portion, which was actually my favourite part. 2. The guide walked very fast through the streets and a number of people from the group couldn't keep up. Another member of the group hung back to make sure we knew where to go. Otherwise, Andrew was engaging, a story teller and overall, a good guide.
J. L.
Joshua was lots of fun, lots of information and the stories of the vaults was highly entertaining!! definitely recommend!! thanks for a fun afternoon Josh! xx
P. B.
Great way to see some of Edinburgh old town, with some very interesting information. Fraser our tour guide was a nice guy who made the whole experience good fun.
N. B.
Sophie was an amazing tour guide! She was very knowledgeable and made the tour fun. She would share her own thoughts on the experiences she was explaining and the romours about them. Any questions we had she was able to answer well. Would definitely recommend this tour!!
B. R.
Lots of fun, especially enjoyed the evening grayfriars graveyard tour, very macabre! Sophie our guide was great even though it was pouring down and freezing cold! I've only given a 4 star because the vaults tour let it down a little, without giving anything away I thought it would be a little more interesting and longer. But still good value for money and a way to keep yourself occupied for a couple of hours.
K.
Enjoyed a brilliant vaults tour with Josh last Monday. His knowledge was incredible, he knew the answer to any question and you could tell he has a real passion for the history of Edinburgh. Amazing value I highly recommend.
C.
We did the underground vaults tour and we thought it was amazing. Was great to walk down the Royal Mile and learn some gruesome facts about the way these people used to live. Seeing the torture devices was also extremely interesting. I definitely recommend this tour!
T. T.
Very fun, entertaining and interesting tour of the underground vaults! Our guide Stewart was brilliant and very funny, and regaled us with lots of fascinating tales of the city's dark and (very) gruesome past!
Stewart if you're reading this - the mysterious sign we asked about is apparently an eccentric Armenian restaurant (according to Reddit). Thanks again!
R. M.
Really interesting tour, we wished we'd booked the longer one. Our tour guide (I think she was called Sophie) was engaging, informative and fun! Would definitely recommend.
J. S.
Great tour, very well recommended. The guide Stewart, was a fantastic storyteller, building the atmosphere throughout 👍🏻
G. C.
Great tour! Megan was friendly, knowledgeable, and full of spirit. She's studied history, so was open to questions and enjoyed a bit of dark humour inside the Edinburgh vaults. Highly recommend!

We went with Josh on his underground Edinburgh tour this morning. Really knowledgeable and friendly. Fantastic tour- definitely recommend. Thanks Josh!
D. B.
What a brilliant start for our trip to Edinburgh. Frazer was our tour guide, he met us in a timely fashion and was making us laugh from the start. Fortunately it was only my partner and I on the tour so we had Frazers historical knowledge directed straight at us. Really enjoyed the caves and all the stories that came with it.
Ps don't stand in the circle you'll ruin your life.
L. M.
Took a bit of time to find the starting place. Nice walk threw the town. Guide was very good and full of interesting information.
O. W.
Out of all the Auld Reekie tours I chose this one because it read as the least scary. My gf is petrified of ghostly stuff so we were looking for more of a historical twist. I wasn't surprised that it veered off into trying to make you jump, but was like. It is creepy and you do get to see a few of the vaults but the stories feel tenuous at best.
However, the guy who did the tour was well rehearsed spoke clearly and with a sense of humour. He carried it off well and you did come away feeling you'd gotten some value for money. Not saying don't go but it seems the Auld Reekie Tours could put more effort into researching the history and bringing out more of the fact based stories rather than the speculative ones.
C. H.
Just finished our tour guide with Fraser, from start to finish, we were given so much history to the Greyfriars Kirkyard’s dark past as well as the vaults of Edinburgh. Could not rate highly enough. Fraser was very interactive with the group and definitely got a few jump scares. (Thank you for that) would definitely take the tour again and was the highlight of our day. Thank you for a great evening.
M. C.
The Underground Vault Tour was great experience led by a tour guide, but unfortunately can't remember his name. With the extensive history of the faults, the occasional jump scare and the gruesome details/history of the Royal Mile+Underground Vaults and everything in between, involving Edinburgh. Belief his name was Tom, but unfortunately I can't remember, specifically. I do recommend the tour for any adults on a visit to Edinburgh.
B. C.
We had Sophie as our spooky your guide! She was wonderful and full of energy and had lots of interesting facts and stories to tell! She even got a few screams out of me! The underground vaults delivered on the spooky vibes and listening to Sophie's stories of the goings-on in the vaults back in 16-17th century Edinburgh only added to this. Certainly felt hyper aware of my surroundings and like there was an eerie atmosphere and presence the whole time.
Would definitely recommend this tour to everyone!
Another massive shout-out to Sophie for being a wonderful guide!
P. S.
We did the Haunted Vaults Tour with my friend, Sophie was a marvelous storyteller, we wanted to be scared a bit but also feel safe in those vaults, so it was the perfect tour for us both !
Thanks again Sophie for your kindness and all those facts about Edinburgh’s underground !
J. C.
Brilliant tour. We last went on 19th September 2021with Beth as our tour guide. Beth kept us on our toes. Just sorry I didn't have any cash on me to give her a tip. Sixth time going into the vaults. It get spookier everytime
T. J.
This is a 100% must the most spooky jump scare tour of all we have been on in Edinburgh, our Guide Stewart was an Legend 🙌
D. C.
Toured the Kirkyard and vaults yesterday. Darren was a fantastic guide and really made the tour for our group (of 4 adults).
We would all highly recommend the tour as part of your Edinburgh stay.
D. D.
When on the haunted vaults and torture tour tonight with my 12 year son and we both loved it. Andrew was a brilliant guide, with just the amount of spookiness! (I am desperate to know what happens in the over 18s version though!?!) Highly recommend, but it really is for 12 and over!
We saw no ghosts but in the final vault I swear I heard a short, sharp whisper, right in my ear saying help. I turned and no one was there, we were right in the back corner of the room so there was no one behind us....
l. R.
Had a brilliant evening in the graveyard and the vaults! Fraser was a brilliant guide who was very knowledgeable with a passion for history, I wasn't brave enough to step into the circle!!! Definitely recommend 👌
P. T.
Really educational tour. Loads of historical information provided and some fun spooky supernatural elements. Fraser was a great tour guide, really funny and knowledgeable
L. C.
Great experience! We did the underground vault tour and came out very knowledgeable of Edinburgh. Our guide Diva was fantastic she made it great! Very interesting to see the underground history. Beware taking young children it was abit creepy and some adults were even scared haha!
D. B.
A brilliant experience, we booked a tour of the underground vaults, Joshua was our tour guide and he was fantastic, full of knowledge and made the tour as a whole an excellent experience! Really enjoyed seeing some of the history of Edinburgh!!
W. S.
A REALLY FUN HOUR!
Myself and my partner attending the vault tour. Our guide Sophie, was extremely knowledgeable and delivered the information in a fun and interesting way. The above ground part of the tour is exceptional, I had been walking past paces with historical significance during my holiday without realising what they are.
The underground part of the tour is extremely interesting and creepy at the same time. Sophie, informed us about all of the ghostly stories in the vaults. It was very good and theatrical. I recommend that anyone visiting Edinburgh should do this tour.
Just a warning, it might be extremely scary for children.
L. L.
We attended the graveyard and vaults tour with Frazier and it was fantastic. Very informative and bought the historic information to life! We will definitely do another tour if we come back to Edinburgh!
K. B.
Our guide Fraser was wonderful! Telling us the stories of the area and giving us a laugh here and there. Highly recommend for those who want to step into the parts of the city that are not as "touristy". Loved the cemetery, wish we could've stayed longer and enjoyed the time under in the vaults. Overall top notch!
S. F.
Myself and my hubby were on the vault tour today and from start to finish was just excellent 👌 Our tour guide was josh who was just excellent full of fun and loads of knowledge and scare a few of us along the way 🙌 totally recommended this tour with josh as your guide if your lucky enough 😊
V. W.
The tour was brilliant!
Really informative and also funny!
May have jumped a few times haha
Our guide Joshua was brilliant too, very friendly and funny.
A. L.
Josh made the whole experience dramatic and just enough scary for me. Would recommend this tour
P. N.
Sophie was an excellent guide. Her voice was loud and clear enough for me to hear easily. Her banter was entertaining and educational. Humorous and a little scary. Throughly recommend it
R. H.
Excellent tour of the vaults guided by Tuesday. She was very informative and had great craic. She made it very entertaining while also touching on the serious notes of vault’s past. The vaults themselves were actually a little bit spooky so very grateful for no-one popping up or scaring anyone as I can be such a baby!!
Overall, very interesting and I would recommend this to anyone who is would like to know more about the history of Edinburgh.
S. H.
Stewart was our guide on our tour and he was so funny and engaging, and a really good storyteller. Super spooky and fun, I'm still laughing at the American guy that screamed when Stewart made him jump! Definitely worth the money
D. C.
Our tour guide was Adrian, who was really knowledgeable of the area. He was wonderful telling us the history of each area we went to and was great at keeping the group together while walking from the kirkyard to the vaults. The tour really illustrated the dark history of the city. Adrian was humourous where moments allowed it and somber at moments that were appropriate.
Overall it was an amazing experience I'd recommend to anyone visiting the area.
G. R.
Went on the graveyard and vaults tour, our tour guide Andrew was funny and informative, really enjoyed learning about the gory history of Edinburgh, wouldn't hesitate going again.
L. S.
The vaults were fascinating! Nora was our tour guide and she was really friendly. She improvised part of the tour as we couldn't do some of it due to the road closure so the tour felt pretty disjointed but that was nobody's fault. We thought it was good that she changed the tour last minute.
We thought it was a bit expensive for what we saw inside the exhibit though. There's one room of torture items to view but it's a bit grimy and the displays are not informative and look dated. A good refresh of the exhibit would make a world of difference. And putting some info up to read would be good.
We loved visiting the vaults though. That's a must do! They're fascinating and we enjoyed listening to Nora talk about life in the vaults.
V. K.
We loved the ghost tour, it was so much fun. Our guide (Andrew) was brilliant, he was funny, informative and also made the tour intriguing and scary. We would definitely recommend the tour and, if we visit Edinburgh again, we'll be back.
J. J.
Just had a tour with Stewart. He made the tour for me, he was factual, friendly and hilarious! Thanks Stewart you've made our honeymoon and experience of Edinburigh one to remember! Cannot recommend you enough (hope your mum's proud haha!)
M. W.
Great tour with our guide Andrew who was very knowledgeable and made the experience interesting.
Highly recommended the vault tour if you like a good ghost story, we did the latest possible tour and feel it enhanced the experience. If I had one complaint, the group was a little too big especially for such a small area in the vault.
R. A.
My Mrs and I booked this tour, wasn't sure what to expect.
We met at the meeting point and our guide was Aimee. Immediately she made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. She was very knowledgeable, very loud and very funny.
We learnt things about Edinburgh that we had absolutely no idea about and were completely shocked and amazed!
Honestly we can't rate Aimee highly enough... her delivery and humour was absolutely perfect 👌🏽
The vaults were incredible and Aimee really delivered the feeling of what it would have been like to live down there perfectly. It left us with a cold chill!
As others have said.... There really is a sinister sense down there!
Massively recommend this tour and would definitely do it again!
Massive thank you to Aimee
P. W.
Really enjoyed tour. Joshua our host was great fun and gave us loads of info. Had no idea what is under Edinburgh!
C. D.
Had an 8pm tour of the graveyard and vaults for 1.5hours Darren our tour guide was absolutely brilliant the whole way round very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and provided an all round enjoyable experience that left us wanting more!
P. D.
An hour of fun if youre on holiday. Lots of stories about Scotland. Guides are friendly, really enjoyed our tour.
M. M.
We did a tour with Frazer - thoroughly enjoyable. He packed in an immense amount of info on history into a short space of time, informative and entertaining. The underground story about the witches and exorcism of course left many of us in doubt..my boyfriend did step into the forbidden stone circle. A cold inexplicable draft befell us in the night, and he woke up with a scratch mark on his back...we could not help but wonder whether a spirit from the vaults had followed us...
A. S.
Fantastic vaults tour with Fraser, he was relaxed and friendly and made everyone feel at ease...which quickly disappeared when we were inside the vaults! A fantastic tour to show you an insight into the Old Edinburgh, with the just right level of scary hauntedness 👻 (Fraser also recommended us a great bar, thank you!)
S. B.
Really interesting Graveyard and Vaults Tour. Adrian was very knowledgeable, with little puns inserted at various points, and kept us interested!! Be warned, there is a bit of walking on various flooring in the dark, including a fair few cobblestones, which I imagine would be quite slippery when wet. Also up and down lots of steps-again, pretty easy for the fit, but maybe a struggle if not reasonably fit. Overall, a great 90mins spent in the brisk, chilly Edinburgh nite!!
S.
Our tour guide was amazing. The information he gave us was very haunting and interesting. It is a walking tour so be prepared to walk. I loved seeing the old torture devices. When we went underground there was definitely an eerie feel. I would definitely recommend going on this tour.
B. G.
Very fun tour of the haunted areas both above and below. Our tour guide (I want to say Darren but I can't be sure) was very entertaining and charismatic with all of the stories. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh.
L.
Great tour with some (a little creepy 🙃) facts and figures about the Royal Mile and the southbridge vaults. Great atmosphere with a fun and knowledgeable guide.
A. h.
Loved it! Very interesting tour. Our guide Fraser was highly knowledgeable n had some great banter! Learned a lot!
S.
Very good tour. Very gruesome details but that's part of the fun. The tombs are very dark and dank and possibly haunted. All in all very good. Tour guide Anna was very good . Would recommend doing the haunted tour at night.
A. M.
The vaults tour was fascinating, Darren was an awesome guide, and made the whole experience really enjoyable, not to mention scary!
l. s.
Lovely walk, very interesting and fun. Dreadfull weather but didn’t matter as our tour guide Andrew more than made up for it! Thanks!
G. S.
We booked this tour within a couple of hours of arriving in Edinburgh and it was the best thing we did! Our guide, Anna, was fantastic - so enthusiastic and informative. She even talked us through all the historical bits on the way to the vaults - which we definitely would have missed - and really helped us to get our bearings. The vaults are extremely interesting but I imagine not for the faint-hearted! We absolutely loved it and would have also tried the spookier tour if there was more time on our trip!
A. M.
I loved every minute of it, Ewan is the best guide/host you could ask for, his humour and knowledge can't be beaten, he walks a bit fast though, we lost a couple from Peru on the way. I think they pulled out so as not to slow anyone else down, he was walking with a Cane. The tour took us to the Grey Friars cemetery, it was dark and awesome, I love being in places like that, if you do too, this is the tour for you. The underground tour was surreal, being in the places Thousands of poor sick people were ,where murders and the worst kind of assaults happened, sure brought it home just how bad they had it, I totally felt for those poor souls. One woman went into a room we were told to go into, with her husband, she screamed and came running out, the only person that felt something in the group. I highly recommended you do this tour, perfect host, and some gruesome but enthralling history to be heard, get in there. 😊
J. D.
Had an amazing tour with our tour guide Megan! She was extremely enthusiastic and very funny. The tour was fascinating and great value. Highly recommend !!
C. P.
Adrian took us on a tour of the graveyard and vaults. It was an amazing tour. He really knew his stuff and told us some amazing stories . He was really friendly funny and engaging.
B. C.
Really interesting tour. Our guide, Tuesday, was very informative and engaging. There was a bit more focus on the supernatural than I expected for the midday tour because the 10pm session was tagged as the "ghost tour". Having said that, we really enjoyed the whole experience which was brought to life by the awesome Tuesday (fantastic name by the way!).
A. G.
We had a wonderful tour with our guide from Denmark (can't remember his name, sorry!). His style was far more informative and less theatrical than some of the other groups we saw going around, which is exactly what we wanted. The tour we went on was inside the old South Bridge, which was quite the experience. The smell was dank, but everything was quite well preserved and maintained. He even sang a lovely song at the end, and I hope everybody gets the chance to tour with him!
J. S.
This is a must do trip. Stuart or tour guide was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and makes the learn fun. The vaults themselves are something special.
P. H.
We learnt about
the witches' curse,
I paid no heed,
now my knees hurt
K. R.
Absolutely brilliant. Stewart was a fantastic tour guide. We laughed we jumped n we learnt sooo much. Highly recommend
S. H.
frasier was a great guide, lots of laughs and jokes while still being very informative. Went in the stone circle but unfortunately didn't experience any poltergeist
M. C.
The vaults tour is worth it, the guide was super entertaining and the whole experience was creepy, insightful and fascinating. Must go!
A. d. V.
Our lovely host Andrew gave us a good laugh and also good scares! We enjoyed it very much!
R. B. (.
Fraser was our guide and he was brilliant. Funny, knowledgeable and friendly. The tour is fascinating and very informative.
a. s.
A really good trip .Our guide Sophie brought the vaults to life and made the scary atmosphere vivid but enjoyable . Brilliant
T. D.
The underground vaults tour was itself highly interesting, the guide was very engaging and the stories were fantastic. Have taken off two stars because the description on Get Your Guide did not mention the vaults had been a Wiccan/occult place of worship and I believe I should have been given the opportunity to decide for myself whether or not to enter those places.
H.
Was a lovely tour our guide was really informative and entertaining. Definitely recommend it
H. S.
Absolutely amazing experience that kept me and my partner talking about the whole thing for the rest of the day and made me do plenty of research of my own into the vaults of Edinburgh when I got home.
Our guide was a lovely lass named 'Tuesday' who was super enthusiastic and passionate about the history, as well as really knowledgeable whilst keeping a considerate and respectful tone of the tour. Tuesday is an absolute asset to the team and really made the experience interesting, especially as she gave us plenty of opportunity to ask questions about different aspects of the tour and the history.
Will definitely recommend this experience to anyone visiting Edinburgh! - Harry and Rachel (the goth couple, 04/07/2021)
V. S.
Absolute must when visiting Scotland! We had the beautiful Aimee as our guide. She was funny, loud and really knew her stuff! We knew Edinburgh had history but we learnt so much more! The vaults were amazing it was so fascinating to see how the poor once lived years and years ago! There really is a sinister sense down there!
Cannot recommend this tour company enough would do it again in a heart beat 10/10 thank you so much Auld Reekie Tours and Aimee !!!!
K. M.
Thoroughly enjoyed the tour! Darren's stories were captivating and effective in building suspense.
D. H.
Thank you to our guide Adrian aka Danial Radcliffes twin 😅
He was very entertaining, informative and most of all showed his passion so it made us all feel really happy and comfortable with him!
The time flew and the tour was something we would go on again even if the vaults don’t change as it was just so fun to learn.
Thanks Adrian 🙏🏼 you deserve a raise! from the east london couple
K. M.
Went on the vaults tour with Sophie and it was a great way to see a part of the city that we wouldn't normally have gotten to. Sophie was very energetic and animated which really enhanced the experience.
L. D.
Done the underground vaults tour today with a guide named Josh he was funny, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Well worth the money
A. S.
Really enjoyed it. Plenty of interesting, gruesome information, delivered in a amusing way. Andrew was an excellent guide and the vaults are well worth a visit
M. K.
Amazing experience inside the underground vaults!
Our gide Adrian has been amazing!
Highly recommend!
C. M.
Great tour, made by the guide 'Fraser'. Interesting history delivered with good humour 👌
K. F.
Fraser was fantastic! He did a great job weaving Edinburgh history into the vault tours. He was entertaining and funny! We would highly recommend his vault tour.
K. M.
absolutely brilliant tour! sophie is brilliant she is very descriptive about all the history and really gives you a feel of the awful ends of the ghostly goings on! highly recommended x
I. C.
Very interesting and funny tour try to get Stuart keeps you on your toes all the way through the tour 😂😂😂😂
A. R.
Megan is a bundle of energy .. very expressive and funny! She is a bright light in a dreary vault!
R. D.
Frasier the tour guide was funny, entertaining and informative, he told us alot about the local history, thoroughly enjoyable, highly recommended.
M. B.
An interesting step into the history of Edinburgh. Tour is only 1 hour duration so if its not to your liking you've not wasted lots of time of money.
W. C.
Great tour. Tells the darker side of the vaults. Really Great tour guide really informative and entertaining.

My friend and I took one of these tours over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it! Patrice was our tour guide and she was so kind, welcoming and very knowledgeable. She delivered the tour perfectly and was so nice considering we had my 11 month old baby with us who was sometimes a bit vocal! We learned a lot about the history of Edinburgh and the vaults underground. Would 100% recommend.
S. T.
This tour was great, a potted history of Edinburgh with some great ghost stories to boot. Fascinating journey into the vaults below ground, wear some stout shoes. Our tour guide Maggie was fab. A*
S. K.
Andrew was an excellent tour guide and kept the momentum of the story going until its climax
L. B.
Brilliant tour, with amazing stories shared. Would check out a different one of their tours next time in Edinburgh!
J. D.
Absolutely fabulous tour of vaults and greyfiars. Extremely informative presentations by Tuesday, who delivered a 1st class lesson on harrowing times in Scotland. Left me wanting to know much more. Really do recommend this trip.
S. C. S.
I'd recommend this tour, and also my guide, Tuesday. She was very knowledgeable and as an added bonus, she speaks gaelic. (The tour isn't in gaelic) This tour goes to the most famous part of the vault, the Demon Circle, so if that's the thing you want to see, this is the tour for you.
C. P.
Very interesting and atmospheric experience. My tour guide Anna was very amusing and engaging! Would recommend to others, and do the tour again myself.
C. C.
I thought Amy our tour guide was exceptional. Great character when relaying stories and really informative. Learned so much about things that you would walk right past without realising the history behind them.
J. G.
Amy was a super guide and it was a fascinating tour, packed with interesting information. Spooky and perhaps a little on the gory side, a real insight into the not so good old days of Edinburgh...
C.
Brilliant and spooky it was my second time in the tour with quite a few years in between but the vaults remained very atmospheric definitely something you need to do in Edinburgh. And quite cheap!
K. M.
Very informative tour, learned load about various parts of old Edinburgh and the plite of how they were forced to live. Now look very close at the pictures, and if your like me and my partner..youll see faces in the wall and a clear face on the black sheet.
S. C.
Amazing night on the vaults tour sophie our tour guide was great and had so much knowledge about the old town and the vaults highly recommended especially at night time
l. l.
Brilliant! Just finished now. Fraser was our guide & he was fab. Thank you!
G. R.
Fabulous tour with Sophie- she was a great narrator, enthusiastic, passionate and knowledgeable. We learnt so many fascinating facts. Highlight of our trip to Edinburgh
K.
It was incredibly interesting! Sophie was amazing and explained everything. Absolutely recommend! I did this with my 16 year old daughter and she loved it too.
10/10!
S. T.
Went on the ghost and torture tour yesterday, Anna our guide was friendly, informative and good fun. Really enjoyed the history of the tour and the vaults were amazing, I want to learn more. Unfortunately had to leave the tour early as my partner had a strange experience in the stone circle room and almost passed out, Anna led us out quickly and safely. Well worth going.
J.
Did the 8pm graveyard and vaults tour here, which became an unexpectedly entertaining and interesting experience by the most charismatic and enchanting person I've ever met. The whole thing felt like a work of artistic historical theatre with tour like touches. His storytelling and knowledge, even if possibly embellished, made the journey unique and unforgettable. Highly recommend this specific experience!
n. g.
Went on the tour on the 7th September The guide Stewart was brilliant and very entertaining.
A must for anyone spending some time in Edinburgh
C. R.
Great tour with Anna, incredible back story and history, really recommend a visit.
C. D.
We did the Vault and Graveyard tour and loved it! The guide was great and it was spooky without being cheesy or too scary.
Z. Z.
We went on the original vaults tour as a family and were massively impressed by what we learned during the tour! Our tour guide, Tuesday was perfect for the job with her knowledge about the place and it's history, as well as her clear voice and humour. What disappointed us a bit was the amount of time you actually spend in the vaults; a lot of the tour consists of getting there. Nevertheless it was an interesting (and shocking) tour on a dark and hidden piece of unique history!
L. S.
Good way to walk around Edinburgh. Good way to kill some hours. Sophie was a great tour guide and made the walk worth it. No ghosts though sadly...
L. W.
Would highly recommend this tour. Very informative, fun and scary! Darren our guide was exceptionally good. Will recommend to our friends and family
M. C.
Wish I had entered the stone circle. Great tour and def worth doing. Tour guide was great
L. C.
Went and did a tour at 12pm with our tour guide Ewan. Absolutely great personality and really made the tour for us. The vaults themselves were very eerie with a lot of history to learn about them as well as having a bit of a laugh. Would wholeheartedly recommend 👍
M. I.
We only saw the vaults. Strong on the paranormal side. This tour is entertaining, scary, mostly true (I think), and by far most importantly... an experience. Our tour guide, the Duchess, was full of information, stories, and made us smile the entire time...well, at least during those times we weren't closing our eyes in terror. Go for the experience!
k. l.
Our guide tonight Medusa was incredible. Very informative, engaging and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this tour and tour guide. One of the most genuine people I have met and unapologetically speaks his mind, in the best possible way. His wit and humour was second to none. Which made the tour even better. When we entered the corridor in the vaults, I seen the figure of a woman standing near the steps and a dark shadow figure at the opposite end of the corridor lurking in the corner. My partner also witnessed a man crouching in the corner as we entered the first room in the vaults. Through out the tour he heard children laughing and a dog barking. In the stone circle room, I saw the out line of a figure walking past the circle. Through out the tour we heard stones being thrown and whistling. The atmosphere and temperature changed dramatically from room to room. The stories told were heart wrenching and brutal. It was an experience we are not likely to forget. I want to say a huge thank you to Medusa for making my birthday a memorable one.

The staff are very entertaining on these tours an keep your imagination goin
T. S.
We did the daytime tour with Patrice, who was an engaging, entertaining and knowledgable guide. A great way to spend an hour, the tour starts on the Royal Mile with an interesting walk to the vaults, where the fun begins! Thoroughly recommend!
P. R.
Great tour the best we did whilst in Edinburgh we really thoroughly recommend it ,very good value for money and learnt so much history about the city. Tour guide was amazing very funny and kept out party engaged throughout. Although you might not be massive believer of ghosts and paranormal activity when your down in the 'vaults' underground and hear of the things that have happened in past times there you will soon change your mind !
P. B.
Did the vaults and graveyard tour with Darren yesterday and had so much fun!! It was super informative and really entertaining, the vaults are really spooky and Darren created such a great atmosphere and made us laugh but still kept the spooky theme by telling some really good spooky stories.
Would definitely recommend if you're in town!
C. T.
Very knowledgeable tours, would definitely recommend
E. M.
I did the underground vaults tour with my partner - our guide Darren was excellent. Fun and engaging, giving lots of details in a 60-minute tour. Some advice if you’re a bit of a germaphobe: don’t touch the walls or handrails 😃
C. W.
Had a fantastic time on the Graveyard and Vault Tour, tour guide managed to be very funny, but also bring the gravitas required for some of the stories he told. Couldn't help but laugh at his jokes, and I was immediately very angry on behalf of the women in those stories, which just proves what a great story teller he is. Would highly recommend to anyone who can put themselves aside for a bit and lean into the experience.
I. F.
Joshua our guide was brilliant he was informative and interesting
D. T.
Guide was Called Stuart first class tour very nice man great 2 hours would recommend it to every one give it a try told my friends one is coming next month
A. F.
Excellent tour with Fraser as a guide, informative, educational and funny at times.
J. G.
Fab tour. Our guide was Tuesday and she was very friendly and informative
A. B.
Had an amazing tour guide Ewan great knowledge made the tour exciting interesting very interactive, he was awesome very friendly hospital & just a great person to talk too. The tour was fascinating, learnt alot & had a great time.
Seen a black shadow plus a person walking past a doorway when we were the only ones in the vaults.
Definitely recommend the tour & Ewan.
From Northern Ireland South Africa guests...
Come my chicks xx
Awesome Ewan

Brilliant tour. Sophie our tour guide was very professional and very informative. Great for family's. Would highly recommend
L. X.
Brilliant tour. Our guide Sophie was very informative and explained everything clearly for us. Would definitely recommend 👌
N. T.
Went for the 6 o'clock torture tour which I was originally pessimistic about. Decided on these as we didn't want anything cheesy or someone who was dressed up as a zombie etc. like the rest of the tours around seemed to do. The tour guide we did have was really friendly and actually very good. She took us around some of the allies before eventually taking us into the vaults which I can't deny were incredibly freaky and eerie on there own! Definitely recommend.
K. N.
Excellent, wonderful guide made a good experience great in awful weather. Soaked but smiling.
M. S.
I love, very creepy and the staff were so so nice. I will be going back there for one of their other tours whenever I find myself in Edinburgh again. Would reccomend. Though be careful with small children, the story's are very violent and scary and might not be ok for a child that scares easy
E. M.
Ewan is a fabulous guide! Very witty, knowledgeable and entertaining!! (If you are a member of the PC Brigade, his tour is not for you).
The Underground City is worth visiting, and an a real opener. Our only reservation is that the tour seemed a bit short. I thought we'd see more. But still enjoyable nonetheless.
Thanks Ewan, love from Ireland :)
R. D.
Ewan was wonderful! He was warm, welcoming and really funny. He got to know our group and was joking with us as we stood in the vaults and I tried not to see a ghost/ run crying and screaming into the safety of the street. The circle room was really, really awful (in a ghost/ presence/ energy way) and I definitely felt a presence that affected me a lot. In saying that I'm so glad I went! It's part of Edinburghs history and I was fascinated in the stories. Ewan stayed after and answered my questions which i really appreciated. I'd highly recommend this tour! Thank you so much!
C. M.
Booked the 8pm tour ( Greyfriar's Kirkyard and Edinburgh Vaults). Fab experience. The guide, Ewan was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and he had an excellent rapport with people on tour (doesn't suffer fools and is very funny). Eerie atmosphere in the Vaults would highly recommend. I would love to do a late night tour of vaults.
m. g.
Been here a few times now and it is a very exciting experience. All staff are lovely and informative during the visit. Ewan was our tour guide and he was very enthusiastic and made the tour so much more enjoyable and fun. Would reccomend this to anyone looking for a historic tour in Edinburgh.
L. L.
The Vaults are very damp, dark and smelly, but really interesting. Our guide told us the history of the vaults, first as work shops and store rooms, then as slums for the poorest residents of Edinburgh, with a few ghost stories adding to the atmosphere. It is not suitable for people with walking difficulties.
B.
Diva was a great guide and scared me and my partner senseless
G. L.
Tuesday was very informative and respectful towards the people whos stories she told. It was professional and not presented as a gimic which I really enioyed 😊 I'd liked it to have been even longer!
M. B.
Highly recommended. The guise was outstanding. This was the best walking tour I took in Edinburgh.
T. S.
Went for the 9pm dungeon and vault tour for 1 hour with a small group. Was an insightful and interactive tour with a visit to dungeons under Princess walk. Knowledgeable and fun tour guide. Would have prefered if it was a bit longer if I was asked for any feedback.
O. A.
We did the children special tour, took around one hour. Our guide was excellent, told us many interesting stories in a kids friendly manner. The vaults are worth to be seen once in a lifetime.
f.
I went on a tour twice, once 11 years ago, and once 14 years ago. Both times were fun, and SCARY, with excellent and informarive guides! I did not experience any paranormal activity per se, but I am a believer, and the creepy atmosphere and excellent storytelling of the guides made the experience very worthwhile. Would do it again for sure, and I recommend it for any thrill seeker!
A. B.
We've taken guests to both tours numerous times and always had a good experience. The guides are funny & have a great range of stories about Edinburgh's darker history.
Auld Reekie are often listed on Groupon for a big saving on the cost of admission.
M. S.
I went to the auld reekie tours with a friend and a few family members and it was brilliant. I managed to get a few photos from the vaults
and there was a bright gold string like object. I asked the tour guide what it was and she confirmed it was an orb. Overall loved it and would definitely recommend.
G. M.
I took in a group of people for the vaults tour. Booking was really straightforward and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The guide takes you from the meeting point near St Giles and explains a bit about the history before you go in. Once inside it's really atmospheric and the guide gives you a tour with a few ghost stories.
K. G.
TLDR: it’s a painfully second rate tour company that gets you access to a novel historical quirk of city planning.
There’s nothing to do in this city past 6pm but drink so there I found myself on a half decent tour with the worst tour guide I have endured (Christine, her name is) she was sick, contradicted herself almost constantly and kept forgetting about the two sweet old ladies that struggled to keep up with her power walking around the city. Ultimately I went on the tour expecting it to be second rate and it was, it went because I wanted to see the enclosed vaults supporting South Bridge, a peculiar city planning feature a few centuries old and the ameteur historian in me enjoyed them.
A. A.
The tour was amazing, despite that our flight was late and therefore the tour was shortened, we enjoyed everything. Our Guide, led the way to a scary place with funny jokes and good sense of humour (huya huya). Being a sceptical person you can feel that the vaults have an odd nature and if you are alone there, for sure you won’t feel safe or comfy!
If I come again, I’ll do it to finish the complete tour! Enjoy the experience and watch out with the rock circle!!
C. R.
We were shown around tonight by Hugh, full of personality and definitely full of enthusiasm for the tour. We did this as a last minute plan and didn't know what tour company to choose as there was so many, however Hugh made us feel part of the group and was full of interesting information so glad we went with Auld Reekie tours. Would thoroughly recommend the over 18s tour - good fun and a fine way to spend an evening.
T. M.
Extremely enjoyable experience. Took the children and they really had a good time. The young dark haired Dutch lady was friendly and clearly enjoyed what she did. She told history with enthusiasm and just the right amount of mystery to keep the kids intrigued. Had a lovely time. Thank you
A. S.
It was ok. Our tour guide Anna was really good and told the stories really nice. But I expected something else. All you see is like 20m of the vaults. You see 4 of them and can go into 3 of the 4. So I just think 10 pounds is just too much.
S. V.
Went with my three kids age 11, 9 and 3 and Stewart did a great job keeping them entertained.
J. H.
Loved it our guide was excellent and such a character. Really enjoyable tour
L. M.
Sophie is an excellent tour guide! Extremely clear and knowledgeable as well as being brilliantly theatrical and entertaining. Thanks for a great experience Sophie.
M. S.
There was only our family of 4 female adults on this tour so it was great for us. Our Guide, Grace, was very knowledgeable and made the Vaults even more eerie. They are spooky and if the stories are true there is a lot of not nice history in there. These Vaults are not for children! They freaked me out coz of how dark they are and ghost sightings are possible! One point to mention is that there is a massive step to get up to the Vaults. Well worth a look!
k. R.
The tour was great. More than enough scare factor. I loved how funny and informative our tour guide was. He answered all our questions.. The vaults are haunted. I have no doubts.
B. B.
Megan was a fantastic guide very knowledgeable
E. M.
Thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the Vaults. They're very atmospheric, dark and damp - what a terrible ace to have lived. Tour guide maybe made slightly too much of the occult etc for my taste, would have rather had more history. But there was still plenty of history, and I did know what I'd signed up for.
B. P.
Amazing! Sven our guide was informative which made for a great historic tour. We all felt 'something' down there, from short of breath to something actually stroking the back of my girlfriends leg.
Highly recommend this tour!
D. S.
Had a great time. The guide, Ewan was funny and extremely knowledgeable. Did the Ghost & torture Tour. Very interesting and informative. One of the highlights of my trip! Def recommend!
K. J.
Highly recommend this tour!! Ewan was an amazing guide with lots of knowledge and a certain Je ne sais quoi! Perfect combination of historical information and a creepy setting and if you’re lucky, you just might experience some supernatural happenings!! Enjoy
A. D.
Great tour of the underground vaults. Very interesting history by Tuesday.
K. O.
A little tiny bit of misinformation, the Edinburgh local may notice some histrionic inaccuracies. But for the average tourist a very fun a good value afternoon activity. Also very intense ghostly activity. Have attached orb photos. Look at my friends hair and then the edge of the wall.
S. I.
Our host was really good and had a great knowledge of the history of the city. Our group was way too big; we had about 36 people. Often our guide would say “because the group is so big I can’t go into more detail” ... well then make smaller groups! It also made exploring the vaults unnecessarily crowded. We also were hoping for more stories about actual hauntings. Greyfriars is billed as being super haunted, but we didn’t here any stories about any ghostly activity. Overall; smaller group size and more focused narrative would make this trip better.
L. B.
Absolutely fascinating, spooky and laugh out loud in places tour with our guide Andrew today!
J. F.
We elected for the Terror tour. We found it to be a little bit heavy on the history and light on the fright. hardly any time was spent underground too. While the tour was bland, our tour guide, Esther, was amazing. she was engaging and talked to you personally on walks between the sites. she dressed elegantly and wasn't over the top on her outfit. The tour was a two, but Esther is a five star guide.
A. M. S.
Patrice was an excellent tour guide, very educational and entertaining, and really interesting to see the underground vaults. Would definitely recommend seeing :)
C. J.
Great visit thanks to Beth the guide. Had a few creepy experiences along the way.
O. S.
We opted for a terror tour, £16 each, and my oh my we were not dissapointed. Ewan, our tour guide was somehow blunt, hilarious, charismatic, rude and fabulous all at the same time! Self claimed as the bianca del rio of tours and he couldn't have been better if he tried! Perfection!
The tour itself, consisted of 5 rooms, each with its own atmosphere and story and it was great. I cannot sing it's praises enough, if you like a bit of gore and goosebumps before bed or just a giggle with the fabulous tour guide, this is the one for you. I cannot express how fabulous it was!
My idea of a perfect horror tour 😃
S. P.
Good experience, great story telling by Fraser.

Great tour of Edinburgh vaults. Fantastic guide called Tuesday. Historic facts and entertainment were brilliant. Would highly recommend. Thanks
P. J.
Entertaining and informative guide. The tour lasts about 1 hour. It is good value for money. We took the 9:00 p.m. tour and it ended around 10:15 to 10:30. Accepted credit cards.

Would like to thank EWAN for his delivery of a fantastic tour. The history, knowledge and most of all the humour he brought.Have been many times to auld reekie before but is has by far the best one yet.
K. T.
Really enjoyed our ghost tour the guide was excellent and very informative he knew his stuff. Would defo go back and recommend a visit. Very spooky place. 2 pm tour 3rd November from Manchester UK.

Entertaining and informative guide. The tour lasts about 1 hour. It is good value for money. We took the 9:00 p.m. tour and it ended around 10:15 to 10:30. Accepted credit cards.

Really good, guides know their history.
V. M.
Fantastic tour of the Greyfriars Kirkyard and the vaults. Sven, the guide, was very friendly, funny and informative. There are no jump scares or tricks like that, thankfully, just quality storytelling.
C. S.
Great history and details given during the tour. Our tour guide Ewen was a little too over the top with sexual comments but was also very engaging with his knowledge.
S. L. P.
Our guide was nice and made the tour as interesting as possible. It is definitely not what i had imagined it would be. Definitely not worth to spend an hour although the history is quite interesting.
B. S.
Very funny, very touching and in parts sobering. The darker side of Edinburgh's history brought to life. Special thanks to our amazing and very knowledgeable guide Ewan!
M. K.
The tour itself was fine. Though for a spooky tour all the joking and laughing from our guide was kinda misplaced. Also the group was slightly too large in my opinion.
P. W.
Brilliant tour of the vaults
Sophie was a great guide very informative
Highly recommended
L. J.
The bloke who took us on the tour was fantastic. Had a great sense of humour and made the tour twice as great. Highly recommend this tour. I have very fond memories of it even though it was well over a month ago.
D. E.
Tuesday was fantastic. Very spooky visit to the vaults. Definitely don't need or want to spend more than an hour down there!
D. A.
Our guide Andrea was lovely, very good at helping create the atmosphere. Spooky vaults and would definetly recommend. Will be back for a different walk!!
A. M. (.
For a cheap little walk around tour, I'd recommend getting a tour with our guide Ewan. He was shamelessly funny. If you're easily offended, get another guide but I'd 100% recommend him.
L. M.
Darren was fantastic! The tour was informative but didn't fail to make us jump but also laugh. Recommend.
D. S.
Fantastic experience, lovely to get a nice solid mix between history and little of the Paranormal. Incredibly interesting, would recommend to anyone.
J. K.
I would like to wholeheartedly recommend the tour. And a big thank to Ewan, our scale.
If you visit Edinburgh, do this tour with Ewan! We stayed excited.
F. J.
Awesome tour. Great (if you're into the morbid) vibe in the vaults and a wonderful storyteller in our tour guide, Tuesday.
M. B.
There was no theatrics or special effects, nor actors doing jump scares. It was history and anything that happened was legitimate. They did not build up your fear, merely told the stories of what happened in those rooms. It's really well done.
L. C.
The guide was very good at what she did. I was hoping for a little more history along with the ghost stories but if it's ghost stories you want I recommend
J. G.
Amazing tour guide, really cool and informative.
Highly recommended, thank you Tuesday!
S. S.
Quite interesting story told by a fantastic tour guide from Dennmark, he was very funny and well spoken. Tour was great.
L. V.

Great guided tour of the vaults. Thanks Anna
S. G.
Great tour! Energetic and very knowledgeable guide.
C. W.
Fantastic tour we really enjoyed the exsperience..Tales about the poor people that lived in the vaults was really interesting and the vaults have to be seen..Tour guide was really passionate about the vaults and thebpoor folk that lived thete and we learnt so much about the witches ..ghosts and the evil entity that resides there...Wish we had gone on the night time tour as i bet we would of had an even better exsperience...If your looking for an honest account of Edinburghs past then i recommend this tour...I will be back again in a few months for the nighttime exsperience myself...
S. D.
Spooky and entertaining, nice tourguide. Wold definitely recommend it. We had a good time.

Great tour guide! Must Visit!
M. J.
Vaults, i did not feel and thing on toward down there, we were asked as a group if anyone dare walk through the circle of stone, well i did and nothing wrong with me, story telling was good but a little boring after a while, i wish i could of wondered off on my own.
T. B.
Went on the Terror tour. The tour itself was fairly interesting and being in the faults was pretty eerie. I do feel it was maybe a little over priced for what it consisted of.
