Reviews of Woolwich Ferry
O. D.
It's very slow. They have two new boats but only one works. They been on strike for years.
A. B.
Haven't been on this in years so wasn't sure exactly what I'm meant to do but it's literally drive up to entrance barrier, wait for the ferry to dock and for your lane to be opened to drive on, park up where told, a few minutes later you are docked at the other side and directed to drive off.
Really simple, smooth and when I went there wasn't really any traffic so drove straight to the barrier with just one vehicle in front of me (around 8:45am on a Tuesday morning).
J.
Used it many times normally there are 2 boats lately only 1 working. However much better than Blackwall Tunnel there are normally queues to get to it motorcycles are allowed priority as they go at the front without taking a car space
I. C.
Friendly staff only one boat service today but. No problem.
Y. O.
Good experience being on the ferry since Covid's lockdown. A masterpiece and a point of attraction especially for tourists.
J. C.
This is one of my favourite ferry routes. Catching this ferry is free and it affords excellent views of canary wharf and other skyscrapers. I would recommend this ferry to anyone especially those who have a phobia of tunnels as they may find the Blackwall tunnel triggering.
T. W.
I love using the ferry as it's a break from the routine. Not normally a long wait for foot passengers but do be advised that during bad weather the ferry service can be disrupted. If that happens there is always the Woolwich foot tunnel which has an entrance near the North side of the Thames.
M. B.
Great way of transport between two river banks of Thames River of east London (recently refurbished). The flow on weekdays is quicker as two ferries operate. Weekend only one ferry in service. Nevertheless it's free, so if you are not in hurry definitely go for it. When sunny view is good too!
T. R.
Much improved service and capacity with the latest ferries built in Poland. A great way to see the Thames Barrier and experience London life on the River. Most of all it's a free service with no cost to drivers or foot passengers.
m. n.
There has been a ferry service here for nearly 130 years and it currently serves around 7000 customers daily. It is a unique way to cross the Thames with your vehicle and it is free (pedestrians and cyclists welcome too). Although the crossing only takes a matter of minutes there can be more than a half hour wait during peak periods in the morning and early evening. Feels a bit like you’re going on holiday every time you drive up or down the ramp to and from the car deck
M. W.
Such a great way to cut across the Thames. It's normally a quick service but can often have long hold ups if there is only a one boats service
J. B.
My satnav decided that we needed a change from the usual bridge or tunnel and took us to the ferry. Only 1 in use so there was a bit of a wait, no toilets onboard, but once we were loaded the trip was quick and smooth.
A.
If you are in rush do not bother... Better stay in the queue at Blackwall tunnel. But... If not in rush use the ferry is a nice and pleasant and free crossing at the Thames😀
K. A.
Novel way to get across the river, preferable to the Bkackwall tunnel on a sunny day if you're not in a hurry... but far too often the service is reduced to just one ferry, which means queuing for 20+ minutes before you can even get onto it
D. B.
My first crossing on the new ferry, it's very busy, seem to be a lot slower than the old ferry probably due to the docking.
S. “. S.
Surprisingly Quick. Very efficient, both vessels, pick you up. dance you across the Thames in a majestic display of well coordinated water ballet and drop you off on the other side. Great Job. No fuss, no cost. Brilliant.
B. H.
Two boat service, saved time not having to go through the Blackwall Tunnel. Great job.
J. N.
I took my 2&1/2 year old grandson who was disappointed there was no duty free, but he was glad the journey was so smooth. 🙂👍
A.
Different way of crossing The River Thames....with your vehicles
Z. M.
Excellent service, has been for years. The open air views are spectacular, joining the south to the east. Clean and well maintained. Fast and efficient. Its takes time due to queues to go on board, but once ur on. Its quicker then going through the tunnel. Highly recommend and staff communication was helpful and advised us that it will take longer then usual as only one ferry is currently in service.
N. N.
Great service when it works. The two new boats are very nice and quick. Always check the service is good before you travel though.
D.
Love the ferry. Happy childhood memories from many years ago....
And my son enjoyed the experience too.
Watching the gantries lower and then drive onto the deck.
BUT...... be prepared to wait. For quite some time if only 1 ferry is in use.
E. P.
Very quick, only if there are two boats running. I wish they regularly used two boats. When they only used one boat, the long wait was a nightmare.
T. 7.
Great service and free too. Not so good on the return journey - 1 boat service so 40 minute wait
D. T.
In many of the cases faster option to cross the river. Of course and it's free!
A. C.
Easy & fast crossing with a view. Hit and miss with how busy it gets, most of the time it's no faster than the blackwall or QEII bridge.
A.
It's kind of a funny experience and a very queek way to get to the other side of the river. Sometimes queues can be long, but it's not too bad.
D. K.
It is a fun way to cross although you need to take your time.. fun but long. For business days I prefer the tunnel.
J. A.
Service was not bad at all. All went very smoothly through the crossing. Thanks to the operators.
O. M.
MUST see mode of transport.
Try not to come driving, best bike or walk.
The views are startling, but the whole experience is out of this normal London style. So grim and slow! So metal and screeching! So transporting!
If you hit the closed barrier, and ferry is off — hit the scary pedestrian subway under the Thames instead.
Either way crossing the river by either Ferry or Woolwich tunnel earns you a badge. It changes you a little bit. NOW YOU KNOW. Go into the world and use this knowledge for good.
J. P.
It was about 30 years ago I was down there last nice g to see it still going today and still free to use and they have got 2 new ferries there
D. C.
A lovely way to cross the Thames. Nice and easy 👌
D. S.
It's free and it's fun!
k.
Only 1 ferry was in use! But always a joy with the water & wind!!!
T. H.
Quick way to get from South to North London without going bk through Dartford Tunnel........
D. B.
1st time I have been on it and I loved it.
m. t.
It's about time they bought the ferry people off and built a bridge.
It's always nice using the ferry if your not in a rush
P. J.
Didn't know it even existed .. was a diversion from the Dartford tunnel and sat nav took me right there en route to Cambridge- took ages as just missed the 1st crossing - free trip so can't complain 👍
Y. L.
Couldn't fit cargo bike through pedestrian side of ferry so I was allowed to back it up and ride on with all the cars
S. C.
Only one ferry service today. Pretty slow. The technology is good but a bridge could have been better.
S. R. (.
A free ferry service taking us across the river, thank you and thank you very much....
We can board on foot, by bike or by motor vehicle.
Speed once on the ferry seems slow but you'll be on the other side of the Thames river in no time (3-5 minutes once it sets off).
There may be a short wait to get on the actuall ferry however, from my experience around 15 maybe 20 minutes ish if you just miss the outgoing ferry.
There are seating and safe standing areas on board and motor vehicles are sectioned off from people.
Its a very nice and scenic crossing.
T. S.
Very good costumer service! Professional team!
A. S.
Not much to say, waited till the ferry came back kids loved it, try and get to the front for a better experience. 8cars per row, 4 rows in total.
D. S.
Only one ferry running and a bit of a delay. Once on board crossing was quick though.
T. W.
Very proud helpful staff. Love the bit with Dane Vera Lynn on the vip
D. C.
You have to go on Woolwich ferry at least once in your life. The queues are not too long if in car, and always plenty of room if on bike or foot. It is also free of charge.
S. A.
Nice service but most likely wait to long
J.
Brilliant way to cross the River Thames when it has a working service. Kids love it and so do I.
R. S.
Only one ferry on. Seems this happens fairly regularly.
B. B.
Very well organized. Still a bit of a wait.
P. H.
Go on a boat trip (5 minutes) across the Thames and its free. Busy times you'll have to wait a whil. Modern flat single deck ferry
C. G. R.
It's OK but a little random as it seems like you get in lane then drive unto the ferry when you feel like it. Needs to be a little more crowd control and proper order of first come first serve. Not whoever takes the initiative. Saw it getting a little bit heated and I can see why. Also people need to be instructed to stay in their cars when on the ferry. Nonetheless thank you to all the hard workers who drive the ferry and keep the traffic moving.
d.
Why is there still only one ferry operating? These replacement ferries are brand new in comparison to the workhorses that were in operation before. Yet they seem to have been more reliable.
V. P.
Free to go there, but sometimes needs wait
L. O.
Behold! Alluring sight of the Thames river from a Woolwich ferry during a crossing. Rather take a stretch of trekking in the tunnel by choice. A glowing #londonsight.
T. H.
It's quite nice. Not fast enough to get you to your appointments in time and you should check that the ferry is working before launching yourself on your way to the good ol' ferry. I will be using the ferry only when I have nowhere urgent to go to and definitely to come back home from the other side of the river with no rush. If you are rushing and on foot, just use the tunnel it's far quicker than waiting for the ferry when it's not even half way to your side!
M. M.
Very fast and efficient way of travelling. Great way to pass all the traffic before getting to Woolwich Arsenal.
J. I.
I'm always quietly amazed that there is still a free ferry service across the Thames. It still feels special getting a boat across the river :-)
P. P.
A much improved service with a larger ferry capacity. The waiting times have improved slightly, and getting onto the ferry is quicker.
The new ferries are quite beautiful, with smooth and faster crossings, well laid out floor markings on the ferry; and highly visible efficient staff. A great improvement from the previous service.
C. L.
I like the journey and convenience but it's not the quickest option for a motorcycle. Big plus is you can go straight to the front of the queue. 30 min wait if one goes out of service. Helpful, nice staff.
J. S.
First off. There are big problems with queueing. You can expect to wait well over an hour for the ferry on busy days. They very rarely use the overflow area on the south side. There is quite a bump as you drive onto and off the ferry, so i don't recommend for low cars. There is space for motorbikes. The crossing is quite calm, you don't sway and its not bumpy docking. If you are a pedestrian or cyclist or are disabled. I suggest you take the foot tunnel a 2min walk east. It has a lift on both sides and is much more reliable.
j. k.
Free to use, only one boat today so it was a long wait, most of the time there would be two boats operating
P. N.
An excellent service. Really quick and convenient. Great views of the Thames Barrier too
G. S.
I've used this ferry many times and is a good alternative to the foot tunnel, especially in the summer. The last year I've found that the boats themselves haven't been kept as clean as normal (seagull droppings) but that could be down to the fact that the boats are to be replaced with brand new boats soon.
As I type this review the ferry is closed, as they rebuild the jetty for the new boats. You can see the new boats from the top of a passing bus.
Hopefully the ferry will reopen in the next month or so.
d. b.
Providers a great free service, but would be so much quicker if 2 boats were in use, would move traffic so much faster
S. S.
Quick, short ferry service. Staffs seemed nice. Didn't' charge for the service. The only issue I had was heat. Had to wait almost half an hour under the beaming sun inside a car, but it was not their fault; It is summer!(and longest one in many years)
L. B.
Replacement for old ferry, is very nice. Some,(as usual delays) but new boat is quieter, and as I am concerned, more effective. Hope, they will keep up with the demand of the service.
J. P.
We went from Southside to north side.on a sunday at 4pm
love the Ferry,nice & easy,pleasant staff.
M. K.
Quick service when running 2 boot services and not travelling due rush hour. Signage not always up to date around the ferry, hence I have driven to the ferry at North Woolwich and got to the ferry only to see the barriers up. Yet signature leading to the ferry says open as normal. Need a bridge. Also doesn't run when the weather is foggy.
T. S.
A great service for cyclists.
The ferry service has recently been updated - there's both new ferries and a new docking mechanism.
There are a couple of changes that affects cyclists. On the southbound journey the left-hand path is for cyclists only and on the northbound journey the right hand path is for cyclists only. When you get down on to the deck you will also find that you are separated from the vehicles, which will please nervous cyclists who didn't enjoy setting off level with lorries previously.
P. F.
Best way to take in some view of the river. Free crossing takes about 5 mins
C. P.
A beautiful view. Watched Dame lady Lynn gracefully leave the ter.inak.
A. H.
1 boat service again so slow
C. A.
Calming and relaxing. 2 boat service's excellent reduce waiting time. Some staff members need to smile.
M. N.
Ok when two boats are running and they're not on strike otherwise use the tunnels.
B. P.
create and free of charge
K. K.
Love the free ferry ride with great views
S. F.
New ferries, always friendly staff, cannot fault the ferry on days when there is a good service.
Free to all.
Pedestrians, motorcyclists, motorists etc.
Great way to get over to South East London!
s. y.
Great service just so slow when only one boat is working
M. R.
Had been on my bucket list for years and nearly made it last year but they shut it all down to bring in new ferries. Been there and done that now - as a tourist rather than as traveller or commuter. Interesting area but hard to follow signage on North side as a pedestrian. Had forgotten there's a foot tunnel here - maybe I'll manage that while I still can.
J. G.
Definitely the driest way to cross the river in your car. Some people dress in sailors outfits when they make this crossing but I think that's going too far. I wore an eye patch and kept bumping into things but I don't think anyone got the joke. A sad reflection on history teaching in our schools.
T. (. B.
Excellent idea, stopped me getting my car wet while I tried crossing the Thames.
Couldn't find any Cabaret acts or Cordon Bleu Restaurants or in fact didn't get asked to dine at the Captains Table.
But lovely Cruise none the less!
S. T.
It's easy and quick service, usually have to queue up in bussy hours on both sides or else its not much of a wait. Most of the time got two ferry which is a free ride accross the river. No consistency though on a waiting time and two ferry in use . Always got one ferry though. Got a foot tunnel which is open 24/7 though if you in a rush can park up and use the tunnel. Closes at 8pm check the open and closing timing. Got to be 15 min before close. Cheers . :)
E. H. C.
I didn’t know this solution the navigation bring here. The waiting time was 20 minutes but I didn’t mind because I never had been here before.
S. K.
I'm sure they are trying as much as they can. I really think authorities should consider more closely of having a crossing east of blackwall tunnel. So one doesn't have to go all the way to Dartford crossing(which is not free).
Regarding number of Ferries, not much communicated why it's down to one now. Although one is better then none.
J. “. B.
As long as you don't get caught in the rush-hour and both ferries are running, this is a very zen picturesque route compared to the Blackwall tunnel.
A. S.
Good service can be very busy. Can be bit of a scramble on Woolwich side. Tried new ferry at start 2019 not very good. Can't seem to dock the ferries lots of teething problems even now months later. Service seems to been stuffed up. Sorry that's how it is.
J. P.
Only one ferry so there was a bit of a wait, I'd wait days if it meant not going through tunnels.
G. J.
It's a few months since I used the service so it may have improved. Effective and punctual service but very run down and tatty, with few comforts, like the 1970s railways when they used to be nationalised.
M. E. W. H. W.
Had a quick breakfast 🍳 and a brew while waiting, no worries 👍👍
A. V.
Good service, free of charge, sometimes the queue is quite big, but it s a good mile saver if you don t want to go around blackwall tunnel or dartford crossing.
2.
Great experience, and it's FREE. I have never floated across a river in my car before ! Staff are helpful though access to toilets could be provided. Can be a long queue back onto the main road at weekends or at times when only one ferry is running. Check Google maps before you go ! Still quite a novelty to have part of the main inner circular road around one of the great world cities serviced by a boat that does 5mph. Enjoy it for the sheer novelty value before some mad man decides to build a bridge.
S. A.
Always a great service for me and the work force
C. P.
Nice ride
l. g.
Love the ferry service but due to just one ferry working recently there is a lot of wait.
J. S. 1.
To the point, if you are in a hurry this transport option is not for you. On the other hand, if you like to have 20 - 30 min waiting and use the time to talk and enjoy the view, then it is a nice experience for free.
P. M.
Very unpredictable. You don't know when it'll have a one boat service due to works etc. If you get the ferry when it's off-peak times, it's a breeze.. If not, then prepared to wait for at least 30 minutes.
J. G.
Great fun and completely free if you are a foot passenger
m. r.
Good but take very long time cross the river
F. L.
Makes your journey quick as you also enjoy the free crossing
A. R.
It's pretty enjoyable but the waiting times are simply too long to be efficient enough for you to prefer this over the Blackwall Tunnel.
J. I.
Good alternative to Dartford crossing , but be careful if your car is low, as you may scrape or destroy your front bumper
A. M.
Definitely advise a trip on this. Takes soo much time off your travel.
The plus part is, the ferry ⛴ is FREE...
I call that value for money.
I. M.
Very nice way to cross the river.
The only downside is that the boats are not very reliable, and break down often.
R. V.
It's fair enough. It's free so shouldn't complain about queues and delays. It's very good as alternative when blackwall tunnel is blocked by morons who aren't paying attention on the road and crash inside of it. Another bridge or tunnel would be better. It's no one's fault there's a river crossing the city.
B. “. B.
The Woolwich ferry provides an valuable service. Allowing the crossing of the Thames between the the Blackwall and Rotherhithe tunnels. Due to its popularity there is always a 30 minutes plus wait. I deliberately used it on thus occasion just to experience the new ferries. Clean, tidy and manoeuvres well. Giving a soother crossing and touch on arriving. In the past crossing by ferry provided a nice break to the journey allowing one the chance to feel the cool breeze of the Thames. Almost giving the sense of being at sea. All in all if your route takes you near Barking and you have the time, Woolwich ferry is a must.
A. I.
It takes longer than the tunnel on average it seems but its the scenic route I guess..
D.
New boats with more vehicle capacity, boats move very quickly across the Thames but sadly they have not got the docking right yet, a little slow but I am sure once the guys have sorted the clitches it will be a great service again
W. W.
Long wait at peak times but if you get down early enough you can skip the delays and get straight on, once you are on the move its nice and quick. South to North tends to be the quicker of the two routes due to the Woolwich roundabout which blocks traffic, especially in the evenings. Very convenient if you want to avoid the Blackwall Tunnel
S. L.
Like The Ferry Good Service Can Wait A While When Only One Ferry in Service
S. B.
Nice to travel through ferry short distance yes have to wait may longer for ur turn but it’s better then black wall tunnel traffic. Best it’s free but heard they will be paid soon. That’s not good.
k. p.
Very pleased with the service. No delays. Nice way to travel.
C. C.
I loved it. But then again, I have always loved the Woolwich Ferry - which has been around forever. I used to even take the trip over to catch the DLR before the last link to Woolwich was completed. No matter whether you are crossing with a vehicle or on foot, it's a pleasant way to go - no traffic hassles, it's a lot shorter and no tunnel nightmares. The operator does a pretty decent job too despite the recent glitches with the ferry boat replacements. However, when they get that sorted it will be a huge improvement for both vehicles and foot passengers on modern vessels.
Highly recommended whether you need to cross with a vehicle or just want to have a relaxing time taking the ferry across the Thames.
F.
What a service, It saves so much time which would be otherwise spent getting to Blackwell tunnel. Negatives are sometimes there is only one boat which causes a very long queue and extreamly long wait, once you are in the queue it is hard to turn around. Very quick when there are two boats as it is one on one off service. Staff are proffessional and organised although can be somewhat grumpy too.
S. L.
Fantastic free service keep it that way
K. h. L.
I drive hgv and it's so covenant than driving the long way round plus i enjoy the ferry ⛴ trip
C. C.
Easy. Free. Good service.
K.
It's free but some times can be long waits!
Then some times the drivers don't have a clue as they leave massive gaps (over 2m) and wait to close the gap when the stewards tell them!
J. H.
Convenient service to utilise especially when the traffic is very heavy. Depending on the time of day the lines to board the boat can be a little long, however it's a good alternative option to crossover the River Thames.
b.
Always some issues, massive Q don't know what's wrong with the ferries they use I do understand mechanical issues happen but shouldn't they have a spare ferry for breakdowns? Often I prefer to Q for Blackwell tunnel instead because the waiting time there is so long. Also they shut around september- October time this year till 31/12/18... ever since there is an additional chaos on the roads around that area!
S. D.
The Ferry is a bit of the old Thames trying to function in a modern South East London. It's great for pedestrians or cyclists, and if it's not particularly busy, good for motorists trying to get North of the city.
But woe betide there should be an issue at Blackwall tunnel as the queues for the ferry will cause tailback galore and there is barely any hope of getting on if you're a driver. It just cant handle the amount of traffic.
2 Ferrys run at the best of times and there is a waiting area for motorists queuing to go over but this can get full very quickly.
Avoid the Ferry during the rush hour its carnage!
A. I. H.
Very good experience to board the ferry you will enjoy the ride
L. A.
My husband and I accidentally found ourselves driving onto the Woolwich ferry through the use of our sat nav, whilst trying to get to Costco. The journey felt a bit slow but the experience was definitely worth it.
K. S.
The free ferry has been threatened with axeing a few times but thankfully it's still here. It may be a bit slower than the Blackwall Tunnel on a good day, but beats getting stuck in traffic jams! It also cuts out going further West if you are going somewhere further East on the other side. Takes vehicles of all shapes and sizes. A calming experience when roads are stressful!
B. T.
Limited opening hours, limited service. Bridge or tunnel would be much better!
Can be useful to shave a few kilometres off a journey of your are traveling at the right time though.
L. C.
When both boats are running its a great service very well run but when it's only a one boat service it takes quit along time
R. Z.
Fully directed decent way to cross old father Thames. You may wait a while (time dependant), but u could always queue at the dreadful French run Dartford tunnel or the free for all fight a minute blackwall tunnel.
You pays your money u makes your choice. Enjoy
T. S.
We had my mum with us and she can not go through tunnels do we went on the ferry which was very easy and quick very happy
M. M.
Yes good, enjoyable, fascinating to watch boats floating up and down the thames water, but it is marvellous crossing the river side to another along with cars in a splendid view.
T. L.
Superb service. Didn't show any signs of sinking. Always a plus in a water borne craft.
I have withheld a point for the lack of duty free facilities.
S. C.
These wonderful bunch of people ❤
Who operate and run this ferry ! In all kinds of weather 🥶🥵
Are absolutelyBrilliant👍🏻
They provide us a fantastic service. ❤❤👍🏻👍🏻
and best of all 🤔🤫
its "Free" ❤❤
Keep it up guys 👏👏👏
D. L.
Pity only one ferry was working
B. 4.
It's free! Worth using just for that fact. Did you know, the 3 current ferries (which are being replaced next year) were built in 1963 and named, John Burns, Ernest Bevan and James Newman and together carry 20,000 vehicles and 50,000 passengers weekly! For free! Yes, FREE. Chin chin.
O. A.
Very poor service sometimes. To me, a brigde or another tunnel will be economical and fair to the environment.
m. m.
Nice ferry clean newer models happy with service gearbox repair service call me.
C. W. C.
Dont know what more can be done but the queues for cars are soul crossing long and slow. Not the ferry's fault but must be mentioned. Ferry itself is great.
D. A.
The Woolwich Ferry is still as good as ever; BUT since it's been passed to private operators, they don't appear to have much concerns for the impact & effects of the Ferry Approach traffic on the neighbouring roads: South Circular, and other roads in & out of Woolwich Town Centre.
Can TfL please instruct their contractor / operator to use the Ferry Car Parking Storage Area daily / as frequently as necessary; to keep Ferry Roundabout clear of the daily lock-jam traffic we experience daily !!! 😕
D. M.
One of the road link bridges on the Woolwich side is currently not working which is causing massive delays. Would be nice to know when this will be back in service so normal service will be resumed.
Prior to this, I have had a good experience
D. L.
Was a pleasant crossing first time I have used it with HGV beats sitting in traffic
S. P.
Great free ferry service joining up north and south Woolwich 4 foot pedestrians and vehicles are like not sure the weight restrictions for very good but I'm sure I've seen 15 ton lorries on there usually a two boat service sometimes restricted to one depending on circumstances
D. L.
Not the fastest route over the Thames, but free, with cycles and pedestrians segregated.
L. K.
Only one ferry was working so it took about 40mins to cross still better than going into the black wall tunnel
J. H.
Handy crossing to use in a pinch, But don't rely on it. The website might say good service but that could be a single boat service and you could easy join a long que on the main ferry approach road and a long wait listening to aggressive vehicle horns blasting intermittently. If a big football match is playing or maybe a Friday afternoon is upon you, It would be best to assume it's a one ferry service at best!
But on the plus side, In the summer you can generally find an icecream man on site, Staff are fair and helpfull. And the crossing breaks up the journey just great.

Free to use, waiting time is normally 30 minutes when i have used it, best way to get from south to north when the lorry is to high for Blackwall tunnel.
B. L.
The queue wasn't super long and the crossing was really quick (<10mins), it's a fun way to cross the river if you're in the area, and compared to crossing at Dartford- it's also free.
m. r.
Found the new boat slower to dock and load than the old one , a lot quieter than the old one though , passengers don't have to go downstairs anymore but narrow and only using one side and one gantry ,I miss the old boats
K. M.
Not the ideal way to get north of the Thames but when your lorry is too big for the Blackwall tunnel it's the only viable alternative in the immediate area. Always busy but staff are very efficient.
C. W.
It is so easy to get across the Thames there should be more ferries along the Thames. It is an enjoyable experience and worth waiting for. Please think about expanding this service, you know it makes sense.
M.
Excellent service very smooth and saved me the Blackwell tunnel queues. Loading and unloading was seemless and orderly though this was on a Sunday evening.
N. K.
Very Good service, we use it every weekend to cross the river for our weekly shopping..
G. E.
Not like it use to be when I was a kid, played on here for ages. Unreliable, nice new boats but can't trust they will run!, very sad
S. N. M.
The Woolwich ferry is an excellent service over the Thames River if you are in central London I need to get to Essex then this beats the Dartford crossing by far also you can sit on the ferry and enjoy the beautiful views of the financial district of London and the Thames flood barrier
P. H.
It does an adequate job but it is slow, especially on the weekend when only one ferry operates. It's better than nothing, but East London is in dire need of another bridge that sits somewhere between Blackwall and Dartford.
A. k.
Very slow on Sunday other then that it's decent, but i will recommend to use the Blackwell tunnel. You Sot have to wait that long in the tunnel but the ferry is long wait.
n. o.
Absolute godsend. My car started overheating when trundling slowly for too long so couldnt go north over the Blackwall or Dartford - enter the Woolwich ferry. Roads on the old docks on the north side are never busy so its an easy drive. And as for the free drive on ferry ride over the thames - why not??
R. A.
In the past, it was obvious the length of the que for the ferry, now, you think the que is reasonable, suddenly you are directed to turn left into a car park with potentially six rows of waiting cars.
G.
Wonderful lovely day better than sitting in rush hour traffic, 1 boat service, no complaints here
s. d.
Love using the Woolwich Ferry as it really makes a difference to our journey, it means we miss so much traffic.
It's so much more relaxing, will continue using when I need to travel across the Thames.
g. t.
Very good and fast!
J. D.
Service is all right but lately every strikes are on so often
L.
This is great and all, but like in the long run, isn't it cheaper to build a bridge?
E. A.
Good experience
J. W.
This is better now they have new boats and their teething issues have been resolved. Be even better once they have resolved the issues that are causing them to be on strike at the moment.
v. p.
It still amazes me that we don't have to pay for such a service. Great way to cross the river if you have the time. I love it. Great views from the River as well.
D. C.
Easy, quick, fun and free, though i expect not during peak hours ,no worse than black wall tunnel I've been lucky with both
K. H.
Staff put barrier down just as I was about to take pushchair in ferry ramp. Had to wait 20+ minutes for next 1 as only 1 bit service that day. Done deliberately. Staff laughed. Not impressed!
N. D.
It is good way to cross the River Thames from one end to other which does save time. The average crossing time I have encountered is more than 20 - 30 mins.
A. G.
Lovely, hard to predict on the sat nav but if you have a bit of time to spare its a lovely stress free way of crossing the river for free!
j. w.
Great fun if the most nonsensical piece of transport infrastructure in the UK
B. M. _. (.
Hit and miss when 2 ferries are operating it's very fast, this morning they one ferries operating it's very slow, waiting 40 minute to board 16/11/2020
I. A.
👍
S. T.
I don't know why August has a reduced service as the queues are so long but once on board is really quick
T. O.
1 boat was working n this caused a 30 - 60 minutes delay for a normal 30 minutes journey. Wish there were 3 boats after the new refurbishment
P. T.
One ferry service so a bit of a wait but saved a long trip to Dartford and back
M. D.
I like ferry it's very handy but there always have some problems and all are suspended or waiting time are 1 or 2 h and working just one ferry .
A. M. E. /. አ. መ.
Amazing it doesn't feel you're on ferry at all. A good shortcut to avoid the traffic on tunnel.
s.
Not a bad service but since they updated the boats it seems to take longer to get across the water
K. E.
When 1 boat operates it just takes at least 25-30 mins... Otherwise is really good 👍
E. A.
It can take a very long time to get on and off but it does get you across the river for less fuel. It is worth experiencing though.
B. B.
A very good free service and reduces my travel by 5 miles.
T. C.
Love the Woolwich Ferry. It's like a gift to yourself.
Time out ! ?. Love the staff.
And an opening or opportunity to visit your imagination
Z. M.
The transfer takes 5mins but waiting to get on a ferry takes from 20mins upto 1 hour.
N. G.
Only 1 boat running but better than driving round
L. c.
It was ok a bit of wait they had only one very working Part from that all good
A.
They need increase the number of boats or try speed things up. Always a massive wait near the roundabout; blocking traffic towards Plumstead/Eltham.
B. H.
Woolwich Ferry Service is a free public transport link between North and South London, avoiding having to go via central London bridges. The service is rapid and runs nonstop all day. It is a very good service!
B. M.
As long as there is a 2 boat service this is a good way to cross the Thames. But is very busy sometimes and it can take a long time
R. O.
Efficient and quick. The renovations were spot on. Polite team. Good experience
P. B.
The new woolwich ferry look like aircraft carriers ,
I don't think there as stable as the old yellow ones , and not as regale as the even older paddle ferry boats , I remember now all three hahaha
M. S.
Great bit of the Big Smoke
C. M.
Nice spacious new ferrys that dont breakdown everyday 4 then take months 2 fix
B. O.
The river view, quick ferry over to the other side so I can cover miles. Highly recommended.
A.
Free. Well maintained. Very fast. Kids can be educated what ferry is.
R. S.
Brilliant new boats that have been kept clean and tidy so far, as well as a smooth ride from start to finish.
K. B.
Old ferries were better and the crossing was faster as well and from what I remember the old boats held more vehicles as well.
M. B.
I have used the ferry hundreds of times over the past 40 odd years, lovely experience. The best part is it is still free.
N. A.
Even the doves use this nature friendly means to cross the Thames. By the way, the river can be crossed: a) by the ferry; b) by foot or bike, using the underriver passage or by the DLR from Stratford. Busses have their stops nearby.
N. A.
Ferry isn't so bad as a way of getting across the river. Not much slower than the nearby Blackwall, and when there's traffic, it's actually quicker!
J. S.
Fast quick and easy
K. B.
A nice experience, first time for me too. Genuinely surprised it was free too! For the first time ever.... Thank you London.
S. A.
brilliant and quick services to get us through Woolich and linked up to the other side of the river London City Airport- Well coordinated services.
well done crew guys!
J. G.
Picture is of old ferry with bridge across whole car deck, new ferry has side bridge and views from vehicles are restricted. Service has become less reliable.
A. S.
Nice but queue is too long especially when just one ferry is working.
J. F.
Efficient free service, as long as its not too busy queuing back onto the roundabout. If so, recommend trying another route across the river.
E. M.
Good to have, but tunnel would be more successful way to cross.
New ferries dead slow and just a way to spend tax money unwisely.
A. F.
It is an underestimation to say Woolwich Ferry Service is the best of any public funded 'free to use' service. It is probably the only social goods that is useful to all, environmental sensible and administratively super efficient.
D. D.
It takes a while but much nicer to sit and wait for the boat than crawl in traffic to get to the Blackwell tunnel.
N. B.
This ferry is a really good one, whether you are going by car or by foot. There is a seating area on the bottom or you can stay on top with the cars and see the view.
I. C.
On a single boat service there is a bit of a long que,but overall, saves you lots of time
J. B.
Better to get there early in the morning so you can miss the queue or lunchtime... saves a lot of time driving around.
K. C.
Would be 10 stars if both boats were in operation!
A. P.
Used the Ferry after 5 years,it has improved a lot. The crossing was very quick.
M. N.
A very convenient way to cross the river. I'm still hoping there will be a bridge for a quicker transit
L. F.
It saved 20 minutes from my journey to East london. Enjoy the trip over the water. Really nice
D. A.
The wait on the queue has gotten better over the years. Two ferries operating now compare to just one which make the the journey quicker
M. F.
Only one boat so 40 minutes wait. Better than sitting on M25 at Dartford crossing....
C. &. C. G.
A must to at least go on the woolwhich ferry once. Travels across the Thames river, very quick ride. We use the ferry everytime we hire a car from London City Airport.
A. G.
A lot quicker then using the Blackwell tunel
T. B.
The majority of the time it is busy but once on the boat not an issue.
c. “. j.
Great way to get across the river
Can be hit and miss if they only run one ferry!
L. O.
que from East is non existent but que in Woolwich is always there..
depending on wot time of day it is...and weather it's a 1 boat service or not It can move pretty quick
..
but great alternative to the tunnel (blackwall)
M. B.
One boat service lately on a reduced capacity ferry as opposed to the old now scrapped ferries.
r.
Great when there congestion on black all tunnel also if you are with family your kids will love to go for a short free boat ride
g. j.
North side ok but south side long wait but this should change once they reopen in jan 2019 after refurbishment of ramps and brand new boats are installed
L. V.
This ferry service has been going for years. Sometimes it's good, sometimes slow and causes congestion in Woolwich. Hurry up and build a bridge, preferably in belvedere
J. C.
wonderful service, especially when using my motorbike.
good service when using the car too.
good staff!
keep up the great work
T. B.
It's never sunk while I've used it.
z. a.
Fun to drive a car on boat. Good service but waiting can be too long sometimes. Intact too long in heavy traffic
T. B.
As a 70 year old, I remember as a schoolboy living in Plumstead often going back and forth until I was eventually thrown off, hopefully on the south bank! In those days I thought the smell of the polluted River Thames stired up by the paddle steamer, was the smell of the sea!
R. H.
Although it does get rather busy at times, this has to be one of the better ways of crossing the Thames. If you have the time.
G. W.
Could be a lot better service
Staff good and professional
K. W.
All good except long 30 min waiting time.
I gues rush hour
L. d. N.
Love it. It's like taking a really small mini-weekend break away, but with no passport control. Sadly, no onboard shopping, but a really quick crossing.
J. C.
Good service but a little slow of course, as you wait for the loading and unloading
J. R.
As from the 5 th of October
The old ferry will be taken and in there place will be two new ferrys so it will be shut for three month s
So every body has to go via black wall tunnel
So traffic traffic will be bad for three months
M. Z. M.
Journey was great but the waiting time was long !
d. g.
New boats make this free river crossing a pleasure. Duty free shop is also very good.
V. D.
Nice if both ferry works at the same time. Otherwise you need to wait for long
r. k.
What to say? It's a ferry that takes people/cars across the Thames. Takes time queuing but staff very efficient.
R. N.
Great as long as you catch it at the right time. If not you may be waiting some time.
J. K.
Surprisingly efficient given the volume of traffic it moves. Certainly faster than driving round if you catch it right.
M. A.
Excellent services
I. T.
Woolwich ferry is great
Hasn't changed much since I used to go on it with my grandma to meet grandad at work
3. L.
If you have time a great route instead of the blackwall tunnel, I use this service frequantly to get too my Dads
S. V.
Very happy 2 boat service come back !
a. a.
Good today two boat service no waiting.
N. V.
I always try to get on the ferry, even if there is quite a bit of waiting time. Its so relaxing, especially when you had a busy day driving.
F.
Always a long queue to get into the ferry with the car but at least it saves about 5 miles instead of using the Blackwall tunnel.
A bridge is long overdue, pls
L. M.
Less known but still stunning views of docklands and the Thames barrier
F. O.
I ride on these ferry for years so sad it's now closed I wish they open it back. Lovely especially summer time.
T. J.
Great service and free 👏
B. W.
Awesome experience
A. W.
The best way to cross the river.
Nice view on the Bank towers and at evening a good 1 Minute with sunshine and relaxing.
A. S.
That is always amazing to cross Thames by ferry. The cool breeze from the river gives the real freshness.....
A. M.
Great way to skip some traffic but on weekends only 1 ferry is running leading to huge delays. avoid if you are in a rush
A. S.
Handy for crossing the river, wouldn’t recommend queuing up to go on the ferry, unless you need to travel across the Thames.
N.
The ferry is free and makes a change from the Blackwall tunnel. It will be closed from 6th October until late December
I. C.
Long wait but it's very good.
a. b.
When its working its a great way of missing out the traffic at Blackwall tunnel.
A. T.
Short, stable and comfortable ride across the river. South to East
M. W.
Great service when it is in operation, even better when both are working however this is the exception rather than the norm
A. M.
Only 1 boat at moment so there's a wait
C. L.
Perfect fast service across the river and also free of charge couldn't ask for more.
L. P.
For lorries it's great alternative - even if you take longer then by road you save fuel. Can't complain it's free😉
S. O.
There is long wait at all times, but it is more pleasant than using the Blackwall turnnel.
S.
Cool when it's working which is only about 40% of the time yet another disaster for the Mayor of London.
M. R.
Nice historic crossing by ferry. Nice short cut to get other side of the river. Good place to visit with family.
M. N.
Only one ferry, but it didn't take that long
L. T.
Shorter distance when travelling from Newham to Woolwich. Less stress and saving money on fuel than travelling via Blackwall tunnel.
B. S.
I use the ferry a few time and it is very quick to cross the river. Especially during midday hours
L. J.
The only Free ferry in Europe!
Queues for vehicles will vary depending on the time of day but foot passengers do not need to wait.
G. S.
The new boats look nice but I think the service is worse
At least it's still free
H. G. K.
Great of there's no queue. If the lines big and your in a car better off at blackwall.
M. M.
20 to 30 minute weight, quick and pleasant trip fast exit, it's free
M. W. J.
It really helped to reduce the traffic. No traffic jam 👌
A. S.
Very quick to cross the Thames to the other side. Howbeit, waiting times can be long.
8.
When I visited there was only one ferry in operation. Was way too slow! And I think defeats the object of the ferry crossing. Not pleased!
m. g.
Sorry, have not been to the centre, but use the Ferry a lot, a very professional service that's FREE, and superb if both the Ferries are working.
S. A.
Good free service for crossing the Thames, wether on foot ar road vehicle
C. M.
Great & interesting way to cross the Thames. Love the starlings that ride the boat over as well..
C. M.
Only one ferry working.
N. J.
Always use on my motorbike so straight to the front of the que for me and always allowed off first...perfect👍👍👍
B.
Whats the real working time? I went in Sunday around 16:30 and they sayed we close...no more cars...so back to the tunnel...
m. c.
When its not busy good short cut to east of the river
F. U.
A precious and unique way of commuting from East to West in London. Polite staff and comfortable space.
K. L.
Fun for a one time thing, would hate to use it as part of a commute
J. D.
A great free service - if a little leasurly...
A. A.
Free to cross 30mins wait if busy. It's shortcut if you want to avoid Blackwall tunnel
L. C.
It's just a really nice ferry since they have spruced it up
D.
Straight on, easy to use, very polite staff members, easy way to cross the river!
A. G.
Quickest rout to take to Woolwich when 2 boat service.
B.
An excellent service, when both boats are running, to avoid the Blackwall Tunnel.
m.
No long waiting to get in the ferry easy in easy out
M. H.
So much better than the old ferrys a lot quicker too
P. V. G.
If I have time then I enjoy taking the ferry.
J. P.
I did not know this place existed till few days ago when I crossed, is not busy and it works great, Blackawall Tunel was packed like always and I decided to go this way.
E. B.
Very slow on weekend but a lovely place
T. B.
The service on ferry was very good and perfect.
R. P.
Good service if you don't want to queue to use the tunnels
H. H.
Service is FREE can you believe that. Cued up for quite a while but can't moan as it's a FREE service
D. C.
Occasionally unreliable, not due to the workers, but equipment. Workers are always lovely
P. P.
Quick service at the time I went so excellent
w. v. d. b.
So quick to go offer the river. It's FREE!!! amazing. And love the view when you go over.
J. W.
Free public transport and fairly useful services too.
g. h.
Luckily no queue so quicker than going through the Dartford tunnel.
G. P.
its a gold free service. however at times you do wonder if it would have ben faster to swim across
V. E.
Good, but ferry was very slow today
s. h.
Long wait for ferry and the road by the roundabout is badly placed. Traffic builds up if you have one inconsiderate driver trying to cross lanes at the wrong place.
J. M.
Funky way to cross the river by foot (and by car) saves time during the week. Busy at weekends.
A. O.
Very slow, 1 boat in service
J. S.
It's free! You get a free boat ride across the Thames! What's not to like!
S. B.
Very good service, people very friendly and helpful.
B. D.
New ferries are a huge improvement on the old ones - simple, clean and efficient
c. 4.
Great option for people who dont like crossing tunnels
V. D.
A good way to get across the Thames especially at times when the alternative routes are busy.
D. K.
Staff are super friendly and welcoming...quick journey across the Thames and freeee
Z.
Only one boat at the moment. Still a good service
H. D.
Great Service and It's Free , even good Parking Facilities if busy you can use free Parking outside ferry really good
R. B.
Just love this transport service. Takes me back to my childhood and trips to visit great aunts...
D. J.
Great service. Reasonably priced and a good alternative to the dreaded Blackwall Tunnel.
Z. B.
I really enjoy everytime crossing via Woolwich Ferry, beautiful view and ferry staff's are very helpful.
J. &. G. H.
Fun, although can bevety busy with lobg waiting times to cross
M. B.
Good service, and free!!! Some times a bit of a wait but it beats going through the blackwall tunnel
J. B.
Not bad for a free service.
If someones not happy then please pay and cross dartford bridge.
L. M. S. d. T.
What is there to say.. practical, free, quick .. you don't even feel you are moving
P. C.
Quickest and easiest way to cross the river. Never a problem and it's free.
S. H.
Great if there's no queue
A. C.
Quick 5/10 minute ferry ride! Kids loved it
D. M.
Passage was good delay due to only one ferry
